Balanced squeezed Complexes
Given any order ideal $U$ consisting of color-squarefree monomials involving variables with $d$ colors, we associate to it a balanced $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)$ that we call a balanced squeezed complex. In fact, these complexes have properties similar to squeezed balls as introduced by Kalai and the more general squeezed complexes, introduced by the authors. We show that any balanced squeezed complex is vertex-decomposable and that its flag $h$-vector can be read off from the underlying order ideal. Moreover, we describe explicitly its Stanley-Reisner ideal $I_{Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)}$. If $U$ is also shifted, we determine the multigraded generic initial ideal of $I_{Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)}$ and establish that the balanced squeezed complex $Δ_{\mathrm{bal}}(U)$ has the same graded Betti numbers as the complex obtained from color-shifting it. We also introduce a class of color-squarefree monomial ideals that may be viewed as a generalization of the classical squarefree stable monomial ideals and show that their graded Betti numbers can be read off from their minimal generators. Moreover, we develop some tools for computing graded Betti numbers.

Rationality of Equivariant Hilbert Series and Asymptotic Properties
Published • View Publication • BIB
An FI- or an OI-module $\mathbf{M}$ over a corresponding noetherian polynomial algebra $\mathbf{P}$ may be thought of as a sequence of compatible modules $\mathbf{M}_n$ over a polynomial ring $\mathbf{P}_n$ whose number of variables depends linearly on $n$. In order to study invariants of the modules $\mathbf{M}_n$ in dependence of $n$, an equivariant Hilbert series is introduced if $\mathbf{M}$ is graded. If $\mathbf{M}$ is also finitely generated, it is shown that this series is a rational function. Moreover, if this function is written in reduced form rather precise information about the irreducible factors of the denominator is obtained. This is key for applications. It follows that the Krull dimension of the modules $\mathbf{M}_n$ grows eventually linearly in $n$, whereas the multiplicity of $\mathbf{M}_n$ grows eventually exponentially in $n$. Moreover, for any fixed degree $j$, the vector space dimensions of the degree $j$ components of $\mathbf{M}_n$ grow eventually polynomially in $n$. As a consequence, any graded Betti number of $\mathbf{M}_n$ in a fixed homological degree and a fixed internal degree grows eventually polynomially in $n$. Furthermore, evidence is obtained to support a conjecture that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the projective dimension of $\mathbf{M}_n$ both grow eventually linearly in $n$. It is also shown that modules $\mathbf{M}$ whose width $n$ components $\mathbf{M}_n$ are eventually Artinian can be characterized by their equivariant Hilbert series. Using regular languages and finite automata, an algorithm for computing equivariant Hilbert series is presented.

A Survey of $q$-Whittaker polynomials
Exploiting the fact that the $q$-Whittaker polynomials arise as a specialization of the (modified) Macdonald polynomials, we derive some of their basic properties, and explore interesting identities that they satisfy. We also show how they arise as graded Frobenius characteristics of $§_n$-modules, and give a combinatorial approach to associated Pieri formulas.
Number of generators of ideals in Jordan cells of the family of graded Artinian algebras of height two
Published • View Publication • BIB
We let $A=R/I$ be a standard graded Artinian algebra quotient of $R={\sf k}[x,y]$, the polynomial ring in two variables over a field ${\sf k}$ by an ideal $I$, and let $n$ be its vector space dimension. The Jordan type $P_\ell$ of a linear form $\ell\in A_1$ is the partition of $n$ determining the Jordan block decomposition of the multiplication on $A$ by $\ell$ -- which is nilpotent. The first three authors previously determined which partitions of $n=\dim_{\sf k}A$ may occur as the Jordan type for some linear form $\ell$ on a graded complete intersection Artinian quotient $A=R/(f,g)$ of $R$, and they counted the number of such partitions for each complete intersection Hilbert function $T$ arXiv:1810.00716.\par We here consider the family $\mathrm{G}_T$ of graded Artinian quotients $A=R/I$ of $R={\sf k}[x,y]$, having arbitrary Hilbert function $H(A)=T$. The Jordan cell $\mathbb V(E_P)$ corresponding to a partition $P$ having diagonal lengths $T$ is comprised of all ideals $I$ in $R$ whose initial ideal is the monomial ideal $E_P$ determined by $P$. These cells give a decomposition of the variety $\mathrm{G}_T$ into affine spaces. We determine the generic number $κ(P)$ of generators for the ideals in each cell $\mathbb V(E_P)$, generalizing a result of arXiv:1810.00716. In particular, we determine those partitions for which $κ(P)=κ(T)$, the generic number of generators for an ideal defining an algebra $A$ in $\mathrm{G}_T$. We also count the number of partitions $P$ of diagonal lengths $T$ having a given $κ(P)$. A main tool is a combinatorial and geometric result allowing us to split $T$ and any partition $P$ of diagonal lengths $T$ into simpler $T_i$ and partitions $P_i$, such that $\mathbb V(E_P)$ is the product of the cells $\mathbb V(E_{P_i})$, and $T_i$ is single-block: $\mathrm{G}_{T_i}$ is a Grassmannian.

Iterated sumsets and Hilbert functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let A be a finite subset of an abelian group (G, +). Let h $\ge$ 2 be an integer. If |A| $\ge$ 2 and the cardinality |hA| of the h-fold iterated sumset hA = A + $\times$ $\times$ $\times$ + A is known, what can one say about |(h -- 1)A| and |(h + 1)A|? It is known that |(h -- 1)A| $\ge$ |hA| (h--1)/h , a consequence of Pl{ü}nnecke's inequality. Here we improve this bound with a new approach. Namely, we model the sequence |hA| h$\ge$0 with the Hilbert function of a standard graded algebra. We then apply Macaulay's 1927 theorem on the growth of Hilbert functions, and more specifically a recent condensed version of it. Our bound implies |(h -- 1)A| $\ge$ $θ$(x, h) |hA| (h--1)/h for some factor $θ$(x, h) > 1, where x is a real number closely linked to |hA|. Moreover, we show that $θ$(x, h) asymptotically tends to e $\approx$ 2.718 as |A| grows and h lies in a suitable range varying with |A|.

A symmetric Bloch-Okounkov theorem
Published in Res. Math. Sci. 8, 19 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
The algebra of so-called shifted symmetric functions on partitions has the property that for all elements a certain generating series, called the $q$-bracket, is a quasimodular form. More generally, if a graded algebra $A$ of functions on partitions has the property that the $q$-bracket of every element is a quasimodular form of the same weight, we call $A$ a quasimodular algebra. We introduce a new quasimodular algebra consisting of symmetric polynomials in the part sizes and multiplicities.

Stanley's conjectures on the Stern poset
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Stern poset $\mathcal{S}$ is a graded infinite poset naturally associated to Stern's triangle, which was defined by Stanley analogously to Pascal's triangle. Let $P_n$ denote the interval of $\mathcal{S}$ from the unique element of row $0$ of Stern's triangle to the $n$-th element of row $r$ for sufficiently large $r$. For $n\geq 1$ let \begin{align*} L_n(q)&=2\cdot\left(\sum_{k=1}^{2^n-1}A_{P_k}(q)\right)+A_{P_{2^n}}(q), \end{align*} where $A_{P}(q)$ represents the corresponding $P$-Eulerian polynomial. For any $n\geq 1$ Stanley conjectured that $L_n(q)$ has only real zeros and $L_{4n+1}(q)$ is divisible by $L_{2n}(q)$. In this paper we obtain a simple recurrence relation satisfied by $L_n(q)$ and affirmatively solve Stanley's conjectures. We also establish the asymptotic normality of the coefficients of $L_n(q)$.

Geometric vertex decomposition and liaison
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 9 (2021) e70 • View Publication • BIB
Geometric vertex decomposition and liaison are two frameworks that have been used to produce similar results about similar families of algebraic varieties. In this paper, we establish an explicit connection between these approaches. In particular, we show that each geometrically vertex decomposable ideal is linked by a sequence of elementary G-biliaisons of height 1 to an ideal of indeterminates and, conversely, that every G-biliaison of a certain type gives rise to a geometric vertex decomposition. As a consequence, we can immediately conclude that several well-known families of ideals are glicci, including Schubert determinantal ideals, defining ideals of varieties of complexes, and defining ideals of graded lower bound cluster algebras.

Standard pairs for monomial ideals in semigroup rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
We extend the notion of standard pairs to the context of monomial ideals in semigroup rings. Standard pairs can be used as a data structure to encode such monomial ideals, providing an alternative to generating sets that is well suited to computing intersections, decompositions, and multiplicities. We give algorithms to compute standard pairs from generating sets and vice versa and make all of our results effective. We assume that the underlying semigroup ring is positively graded, but not necessarily normal. The lack of normality is at the root of most challenges, subtleties, and innovations in this work.

$B$-rigidity of ideal almost Pogorelov polytopes
Toric topology assigns to each $n$-dimensional combinatorial simple convex polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $(m+n)$-dimensional moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ with an action of a compact torus $T^m$ such that $\mathcal{Z}_P/T^m$ is a convex polytope of combinatorial type $P$. A simple $n$-polytope is called $B$-rigid, if any isomorphism of graded rings $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)= H^*(\mathcal{Z}_Q,\mathbb Z)$ for a simple $n$-polytope $Q$ implies that $P$ and $Q$ are combinatorially equivalent. An ideal almost Pogorelov polytope is a combinatorial $3$-polytope obtained by cutting off all the ideal vertices of an ideal right-angled polytope in the Lobachevsky (hyperbolic) space $\mathbb L^3$. These polytopes are exactly the polytopes obtained from any, not necessarily simple, convex $3$-polytopes by cutting off all the vertices followed by cutting off all the "old" edges. The boundary of the dual polytope is the barycentric subdivision of the boundary of the old polytope (and also of its dual polytope). We prove that any ideal almost Pogorelov polytope is $B$-rigid. This produces three cohomologically rigid families of manifolds over ideal almost Pogorelov manifolds: moment-angle manifolds, canonical $6$-dimensional quasitoric manifolds and canonical $3$-dimensional small covers, which are "pullbacks from the linear model".

Eulerian representations for real reflection groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Eulerian idempotents, first introduced for the symmetric group and later extended to all reflection groups, generate a family of representations called the Eulerian representations that decompose the regular representation. In Type $A$, the Eulerian representations have many elegant but mysterious connections to rings naturally associated with the braid arrangement. In this paper, we unify these results and show that they hold for any reflection group of coincidental type -- that is, $S_{n}$, $B_{n}$, $H_{3}$ or the dihedral group $I_{2}(m)$ -- by giving six characterizations of the Eulerian representations, including as components of the associated graded of the Varchenko-Gelfand ring $\mathcal{V}$. As a consequence, we show that Solomon's descent algebra contains a commutative subalgebra generated by sums of elements with the same number of descents if and only if $W$ is coincidental. More generally, when $W$ is any finite real reflection group, we give a case-free construction of a family of Eulerian representations described by a flat-decomposition of the ring $\mathcal{V}$.

Classification of P-oligomorphic groups, conjectures of Cameron and Macpherson
Let G be a group of permutations of a denumerable set E. The profile of G is the function phi which counts, for each n, the number phi(n) of orbits of G acting on the n-subsets of E. Counting functions arising this way, and their associated generating series, form a rich yet apparently strongly constrained class. In particular, Cameron conjectured in the late seventies that, whenever the profile phi(n) is bounded by a polynomial -- we say that G is P-oligomorphic --, it is asymptotically equivalent to a polynomial. In 1985, Macpherson further asked whether the orbit algebra of G -- a graded commutative algebra invented by Cameron and whose Hilbert function is phi -- is finitely generated. In this paper we establish a classification of (closed) P-oligomorphic permutation groups in terms of finite permutation groups with decorated blocks. It follows from the classification that the orbit algebra of any P-oligomorphic group is isomorphic to (a straightforward quotient of) the invariant ring of some finite permutation group. This answers positively both Cameron's conjecture and Macpherson's question. The orbit algebra is in fact Cohen-Macaulay; therefore the generating series of phi is a rational fraction whose numerator has positive coefficients, while the denominator admits a combinatorial description. In addition, the classification provides a finite data structure for encoding closed P-oligomorphic groups. This paves the way for computing with them and enumerating them as well as for proofs by structural induction. Finally, the relative simplicity of the classification gives hopes to extend the study to, e.g., the class of (closed) permutations groups with sub-exponential profile. The proof exploits classical notions from group theory -- notably block systems and their lattice properties --, commutative algebra, and invariant theory.

Calabi-Yau Products: Graded Quivers for General Toric Calabi-Yaus
Published • View Publication • BIB
The open string sector of the topological B-model on CY $(m+2)$-folds is described by $m$-graded quivers with superpotentials. This correspondence generalizes the connection between CY $(m+2)$-folds and gauge theories on the worldvolume of D$(5-2m)$-branes for $m=0,\ldots,3$ to arbitrary $m$. In this paper we introduce the Calabi-Yau product, a new algorithm that starting from the known quiver theories for a pair of toric CY$_{m+2}$ and CY$_{n+2}$ produces the quiver theory for a related CY$_{m+n+3}$. This method significantly supersedes existing ones, enabling the simple determination of quiver theories for geometries that were previously out of practical reach.

The modular Weyl-Kac character formula
Published • View Publication • BIB
We classify and explicitly construct the irreducible graded representations of anti-spherical Hecke categories which are concentrated in one degree. Each of these homogeneous representations is one-dimensional and can be cohomologically constructed via a BGG resolution involving every (infinite dimensional) standard representation of the category. We hence determine the complete first row of the inverse parabolic $p$-Kazhdan--Lusztig matrix for an arbitrary Coxeter group and an arbitrary parabolic subgroup. This generalises the Weyl--Kac character formula to all Coxeter systems (and their parabolics) and proves that this generalised formula is rigid with respect to base change to an arbitrary field.

Duality of graded graphs through operads
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 2021 • View Publication • BIB
Pairs of graded graphs, together with the Fomin property of graded graph duality, are rich combinatorial structures providing among other a framework for enumeration. The prototypical example is the one of the Young graded graph of integer partitions, allowing us to connect number of standard Young tableaux and numbers of permutations. Here, we use operads, that algebraic devices abstracting the notion of composition of combinatorial objects, to build pairs of graded graphs. For this, we first construct a pair of graded graphs where vertices are syntax trees, the elements of free nonsymmetric operads. This pair of graphs is dual for a new notion of duality called $φ$-diagonal duality, similar to the ones introduced by Fomin. We also provide a general way to build pairs of graded graphs from operads, wherein underlying posets are analogous to the Young lattice. Some examples of operads leading to new pairs of graded graphs involving integer compositions, Motzkin paths, and $m$-trees are considered.

Graded Algebras, Algebraic Functions, Planar Trees, and Elliptic Integrals
Published • View Publication • BIB
This article surveys results on graded algebras and their Hilbert series. We give simple constructions of finitely generated graded associative algebras $R$ with Hilbert series $H(R,t)$ very close to an arbitrary power series $a(t)$ with exponentially bounded nonnegative integer coefficients. Then we summarize some related facts on algebras with polynomial identity. Further we discuss the problem how to find series $a(t)$ which are rational/algebraic/transcendental over ${\mathbb Q}(t)$. Applying a classical result of Fatou we conclude that if a finitely generated graded algebra has a finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, then its Hilbert series is either rational or transcendental. In particular the same dichotomy holds for the Hilbert series of a finitely generated algebra with polynomial identity. We show how to use planar rooted trees to produce algebraic power series. Finally we survey some results on noncommutative invariant theory which show that we can obtain as Hilbert series various algebraic functions and even elliptic integrals.

$B$-rigidity of the property to be an almost Pogorelov polytope
Published • View Publication • BIB
Toric topology assigns to each $n$-dimensional combinatorial simple convex polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $(m+n)$-dimensional moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ with an action of a compact torus $T^m$ such that $\mathcal{Z}_P/T^m$ is a convex polytope of combinatorial type $P$. We study the notion of $B$-rigidity. A property of a polytope $P$ is called $B$-rigid, if any isomorphism of graded rings $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)= H^*(\mathcal{Z}_Q,\mathbb Z)$ for a simple $n$-polytope $Q$ implies that it also has this property. We study families of $3$-dimensional polytopes defined by their cyclic $k$-edge-connectivity. These families include flag polytopes and Pogorelov polytopes, that is polytopes realizable as bounded right-angled polytopes in Lobachevsky space $\mathbb L^3$. Pogorelov polytopes include fullerenes -- simple polytopes with only pentagonal and hexagonal faces. It is known that the properties to be flag and Pogorelov polytope are $B$-rigid. We focus on almost Pogorelov polytopes, which are strongly cyclically $4$-edge-connected polytopes. They correspond to right-angled polytopes of finite volume in $\mathbb L^3$. There is a subfamily of ideal almost Pogorelov polytopes corresponding to ideal right-angled polytopes. We prove that the properties to be an almost Pogorelov polytope and an ideal almost Pogorelov polytope are $B$-rigid. As a corollary we obtain that $3$-dimensional associahedron $As^3$ and permutohedron $Pe^3$ are $B$-rigid. We generalize methods known for Pogorelov polytopes. We obtain results on $B$-rigidity of subsets in $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)$ and prove an analog of the so-called separable circuit condition (SCC). As an example we consider the ring $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_{As^3},\mathbb Z)$.

Ordered set partitions, Garsia-Procesi modules, and rank varieties
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 374 (2021), pp. 2609-2660 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a family of ideals $I_{n,λ,s}$ in $\mathbb{Q}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ for $λ$ a partition of $k\leq n$ and an integer $s \geq \ell(λ)$. This family contains both the Tanisaki ideals $I_λ$ and the ideals $I_{n,k}$ of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono as special cases. We study the corresponding quotient rings $R_{n,λ,s}$ as symmetric group modules. When $n=k$ and $s$ is arbitrary, we recover the Garsia-Procesi modules, and when $λ=(1^k)$ and $s=k$, we recover the generalized coinvariant algebras of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono. We give a monomial basis for $R_{n,λ,s}$, unifying the monomial bases studied by Garsia-Procesi and Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono, and realize the $S_n$-module structure of $R_{n,λ,s}$ in terms of an action on $(n,λ,s)$-ordered set partitions. We also prove formulas for the Hilbert series and graded Frobenius characteristic of $R_{n,λ,s}$. We then connect our work with Eisenbud-Saltman rank varieties using results of Weyman. As an application of our work, we give a monomial basis, Hilbert series formula, and graded Frobenius characteristic formula for the coordinate ring of the scheme-theoretic intersection of a rank variety with diagonal matrices.

Lefschetz theory for exterior algebras and fermionic diagonal coinvariants
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $W$ be an irreducible complex reflection group acting on its reflection representation $V$. We consider the doubly graded action of $W$ on the exterior algebra $\wedge (V \oplus V^*)$ as well as its quotient $DR_W := \wedge (V \oplus V^*)/ \langle \wedge (V \oplus V^*)^{W}_+ \rangle$ by the ideal generated by its homogeneous $W$-invariants with vanishing constant term. We describe the bigraded isomorphism type of $DR_W$; when $W = \mathfrak{S}_n$ is the symmetric group, the answer is a difference of Kronecker products of hook-shaped $\mathfrak{S}_n$-modules. We relate the Hilbert series of $DR_W$ to the (type A) Catalan and Narayana numbers and describe a standard monomial basis of $DR_W$ using a variant of Motzkin paths. Our methods are type-uniform and involve a Lefschetz-like theory which applies to the exterior algebra $\wedge (V \oplus V^*)$.
