Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on $[n]$ and $I(G) \subset S$ the edge ideal of $G$, where $S = K[x_{1}, \ldots, x_{n}]$ is the polynomial ring over a field $K$. Let $m(G)$ denote the maximum size of matchings of $G$ and $im(G)$ that of induced matchings of $G$. It is known that $im(G) \leq \text{reg}(S/I(G)) \leq m(G)$, where $\text{reg}(S/I(G))$ is the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $S/I(G)$. Cameron and Walker succeeded in classifying the finite connected simple graphs $G$ with $im(G) = m(G)$. We say that a finite connected simple graph $G$ is a Cameron-Walker graph if $im(G) = m(G)$ and if $G$ is neither a star nor a star triangle. In the present paper, we study Cameron-Walker graphs from a viewpoint of commutative algebra. First, we prove that a Cameron-Walker graph $G$ is unmixed if and only if $G$ is Cohen-Macaulay and classify all Cohen-Macaulay Cameron-Walker graphs. Second, we prove that there is no Gorenstein Cameron-Walker graph. Finally, we prove that every Cameron--Walker graph is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay.

It is proved that the broken circuit complex of an ordered matroid is Gorenstein if and only if it is a complete intersection. Several characterizations for a matroid that admits such an order are then given, with particular interest in the $h$-vector of broken circuit complexes of the matroid. As an application, we prove that the Orlik--Terao algebra of a hyperplane arrangement is Gorenstein if and only if it is a complete intersection. Interestingly, our result shows that the complete intersection property (and hence the Gorensteinness as well) of the Orlik--Terao algebra can be determined from the last two nonzero entries of its $h$-vector.
Classifying terminal weighted projective space
We present a classification of all weighted projective spaces with at worst terminal or canonical singularities in dimension four. As a corollary we also classify all four-dimensional one-point lattice simplices up to equivalence. Finally, we classify the terminal Gorenstein weighted projective spaces up to dimension ten.

A Gorenstein polytope of index r is a lattice polytope whose r-th dilate is a reflexive polytope. These objects are of interest in combinatorial commutative algebra and enumerative combinatorics, and play a crucial role in Batyrev's and Borisov's computation of Hodge numbers of mirror-symmetric generic Calabi-Yau complete intersections. In this paper, we report on what is known about smooth Gorenstein polytopes, i.e., Gorenstein polytopes whose normal fan is unimodular. We classify d-dimensional smooth Gorenstein polytopes with index larger than (d+3)/3. Moreover, we use a modification of Oebro's algorithm to achieve classification results for smooth Gorenstein polytopes in low dimensions. The first application of these results is a database of all toric Fano d-folds whose anticanonical divisor is divisible by an integer r larger than d-8. As a second application we verify that there are only finitely many families of Calabi-Yau complete intersections of fixed dimension that are associated to a smooth Gorenstein polytope via the Batyrev-Borisov construction.

We study the problem of whether an arbitrary codimension three graded artinian Gorenstein algebra has the Weak Lefschetz Property. We reduce this problem to checking whether it holds for all compressed Gorenstein algebras of odd socle degree. In the first open case, namely Hilbert function (1,3,6,6,3,1), we give a complete answer in every characteristic by translating the problem to one of studying geometric aspects of certain morphisms from $\mathbb P^2$ to $\mathbb P^3$, and Hesse configurations in $\mathbb P^2$.

An integral convex polytope ${\mathcal P}$ is said to be Gorenstein if its toric ring $K[{\mathcal P}]$ is normal and Gorenstein. In this paper, Gorenstein cut polytopes of graphs are characterized explicitly. First, we prove that Gorenstein cut polytopes are compressed (i.e., all of whose reverse lexicographic triangulations are unimodular). Second, by applying Athanasiadis's theory for Gorenstein compressed polytopes, we show that a cut polytope of a graph $G$ is Gorenstein if and only if $G$ has no $K_5$-minor and $G$ is either a bipartite graph without induced cycles of length $\geq 6$ or a bridgeless chordal graph.

We give a bound for the Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a stellar subdivision of a Gorenstein* simplicial complex by applying unprojection theory. From this we derive a bound for the Betti numbers of iterated stellar subdivisions of the boundary complex of a simplex. The bound depends only on the number of subdivisions, and we construct examples which prove that it is sharp.

In this note we investigate the convex hull of those $n \times n$-permutation matrices that correspond to symmetries of a regular $n$-gon. We give the complete facet description. As an application, we show that this yields a Gorenstein polytope, and we determine the Ehrhart $h^*$-vector.
s-Lecture Hall Partitions, Self-Reciprocal Polynomials, and Gorenstein Cones

In 1997, Bousquet-Melou and Eriksson initiated the study of lecture hall partitions, a fascinating family of partitions that yield a finite version of Euler's celebrated odd/distinct partition theorem. In subsequent work on s-lecture hall partitions, they considered the self-reciprocal property for various associated generating functions, with the goal of characterizing those sequences s that give rise to generating functions of the form $((1-q^{e_1})(1-q^{e_2})...(1-q^{e_n}))^{-1}$.
We continue this line of investigation, connecting their work to the more general context of Gorenstein cones. We focus on the Gorenstein condition for s-lecture hall cones when s is a positive integer sequence generated by a second-order homogeneous linear recurrence with initial values 0 and 1. Among such sequences s, we prove that the n-dimensional s-lecture hall cone is Gorenstein for all n greater than or equal to 1 if and only if s is an l-sequence. One consequence is that among such sequences s, unless s is an l-sequence, the generating function for the s-lecture hall partitions can have the form $((1-q^{e_1})(1-q^{e_2})...(1-q^{e_n}))^{-1}$ for at most finitely many n.
We also apply the results to establish several conjectures by Pensyl and Savage regarding the symmetry of h*-vectors for s-lecture hall polytopes. We end with open questions and directions for further research.
Hilbert series of certain jet schemes of determinantal varieties

We consider the affine variety ${\mathcal{Z}_{2,2}^{m,n}}$ (or just "$Y$") of first order jets over ${\mathcal{Z}_{2}^{m,n}}$ (or just "$X$"), where $X$ is the classical determinantal variety given by the vanishing of all $2\times 2$ minors of a generic $m\times n$ matrix. When $2 < m \le n$, this jet scheme $Y$ has two irreducible components: a trivial component, isomorphic to an affine space, and a nontrivial component that is the closure of the jets supported over the smooth locus of $X$. This second component is referred to as the principal component of $Y$; it is, in fact, a cone and can also be regarded as a projective subvariety of $\mathbf{P}^{2mn-1}$. We prove that the degree of the principal component of $Y$ is the square of the degree of $X$ and more generally, the Hilbert series of the principal component of $Y$ is the square of the Hilbert series of $X$. As an application, we compute the $a$-invariant of the principal component of $Y$ and show that the principal component of $Y$ is Gorenstein if and only if $m=n$.

We characterize f-vectors of sufficiently large three-dimensional flag Gorenstein* complexes, essentially confirming a conjecture of Gal [Discrete Comput. Geom., 34 (2), 269--284, 2005]. In particular, this characterizes f-vectors of large flag triangulations of the 3-sphere. Actually, our main result is more general and describes the structure of closed flag 3-manifolds which have many edges.
Looking at the 1-skeleta of these manifolds we reduce the problem to a certain question in extremal graph theory. We then resolve this question by employing the Supersaturation Theorem of Erdos and Simonovits.

In the present paper, we consider the problem when the toric ring arising from an integral cyclic polytope is Cohen-Macaulay by discussing Serre's condition and we give a complete characterization when that is Gorenstein. Moreover, we study the normality of the other semigroup ring arising from an integral cyclic polytope but generated only with its vertices.

Boij-Söderberg theory shows that the Betti table of a graded module can be written as a liner combination of pure diagrams with integer coefficients. Using Ferrers hypergraphs and simplicial polytopes, we provide interpretations of these coefficients for ideals with a d-linear resolution, their quotient rings, and for Gorenstein rings whose resolution has essentially at most two linear strands. We also establish a structural result on the decomposition in the case of quasi-Gorenstein modules.
Conifold degenerations of Fano 3-folds as hypersurfaces in toric varieties

There exist exactly 166 4-dimensional reflexive polytopes such that the corresponding 4-dimensional Gorenstein toric Fano varieties have at worst terminal singularities in codimension 3 and their anticanonical divisor is divisible by 2. For every such a polytope, one naturally obtains a family of Fano hypersurfaces X with at worst conifold singularities. A generic 3-dimensional Fano hypersurface X can be interpreted as a flat conifold degeneration of some smooth Fano 3-folds Y whose classification up to deformation was obtained by Iskovskikh, Mori and Mukai. In this case, both Fano varieties X and Y have the same Picard number r. Using toric mirror symmetry, we define a r-dimensional generalized hypergeometric power series associated to the dual reflexive polytope. We show that if r =1 then this series is a normalized regular solution of a modular D3-equation that appears in the Golyshev correspondence. We expect that the multidimensional power series can be used to compute the small quantum cohomology ring of all Fano 3-folds Y with the Picard number r >1 if Y admit a conifold degeneration X.

In this paper, we study several properties of the second power $I_Δ^2$ of a Stanley-Reisner ideal $I_Δ$ of any dimension. As the main result, we prove that $S/I_Δ$ is Gorenstein whenever $S/I_Δ^2$ is Cohen-Macaulay over any field $K$. Moreover, we give a criterion for the second symbolic power of $I_Δ$ to satisfy $(S_2)$ and to coincide with the ordinary power, respectively. Finally, we provide new examples of Stanley-Reisner ideals whose second powers are Cohen-Macaulay.

The Abelian Sandpile Model (ASM) is a game played on a graph realizing the dynamics implicit in the discrete Laplacian matrix of the graph. The purpose of this primer is to apply the theory of lattice ideals from algebraic geometry to the Laplacian matrix, drawing out connections with the ASM. An extended summary of the ASM and of the required algebraic geometry is provided. New results include a characterization of graphs whose Laplacian lattice ideals are complete intersection ideals; a new construction of arithmetically Gorenstein ideals; a generalization to directed multigraphs of a duality theorem between elements of the sandpile group of a graph and the graph's superstable configurations (parking functions); and a characterization of the top Betti number of the minimal free resolution of the Laplacian lattice ideal as the number of elements of the sandpile group of least degree. A characterization of all the Betti numbers is conjectured.
Roots of Ehrhart polynomials and symmetric $δ$-vectors
The conjecture on roots of Ehrhart polynomials, stated by Matsui et al. \cite[Conjecture 4.10]{MHNOH}, says that all roots $α$ of the Ehrhart polynomial of a Gorenstein Fano polytope of dimension $d$ satisfy $-\frac{d}{2} \leq \Re(α) \leq \frac{d}{2} -1$. In this paper, we observe the behaviors of roots of SSNN polynomials which are a wider class of the polynomials containing all the Ehrhart polynomials of Gorenstein Fano polytopes. As a result, we verify that this conjecture is true when the roots are real numbers or when $d \leq 5$.

We characterize the cd-indices of Gorenstein* posets of rank 5, equivalently the flag f-vectors of Gorenstein* order complexes of dimension 3. As a corollary, we characterize the f-vectors of Gorenstein* order complexes in dimensions 3 and 4. This characterization rise a speculated intimate connection between the f-vectors of flag homology spheres and the f-vectors of Gorenstein* order complexes.
