Apartments preserving transformations of Grassmannians of infinite-dimensional vector spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define the Grassmannians of an infinite-dimensional vector space $V$ as the orbits of the action of the general linear group ${\rm GL}(V)$ on the set of all subspaces. Let ${\mathcal G}$ be one of these Grassmannians. An apartment in ${\mathcal G}$ is the set of all elements of ${\mathcal G}$ spanned by subsets of a certain basis of $V$. We show that every bijective transformation $f$ of ${\mathcal G}$ such that $f$ and $f^{-1}$ send apartments to apartments is induced by a semilinear automorphism of $V$. In the case when ${\mathcal G}$ consists of subspaces whose dimension and codimension both are infinite, a such kind result will be proved also for the connected components of the associated Grassmann graph.

A representation-theoretic interpretation of positroid classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A positroid is the matroid of a real matrix with nonnegative maximal minors, a positroid variety is the closure of the locus of points in a complex Grassmannian whose matroid is a fixed positroid, and a positroid class is the cohomology class Poincaré dual to a positroid variety. We define a family of representations of general linear groups whose characters are symmetric polynomials representing positroid classes. These representations are certain diagram Schur modules in the sense of James and Peel. This gives a new algebraic interpretation of the Schubert structure constants for the product of a Schubert polynomial and Schur polynomial, and of the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants for Grassmannians, proving a conjecture of Postnikov. As a byproduct, we obtain an effective algorithm for decomposing positroid classes into Schubert classes.

Commuting involution graphs of linear groups
In this paper, we determine the diameter of the commuting involution graphs of special and general linear groups over an arbitrary field. It turns out that our results also determine the diameter for certain projective special linear groups over finite fields. Moreover, we find the diameter of the commuting graphs of general linear groups on the set of all involutions over a field of characteristic 2, which completes the diameter of general linear groups on the set of all involutions. As an application, we classify the structure of the four-dimensional linear groups over finite fields according to the distance from a fixed involution.

Factorial characters of some classical Lie groups
A definition is offered of the factorial characters of the general linear group, the symplectic group and the orthogonal group in an odd dimensional space. It is shown that these characters satisfy certain flagged Jacobi-Trudi identities. These identities are then used to give combinatorial expressions for the factorial characters: first in terms of a lattice path model and then in terms of the well known tableaux associated with the classical groups. Factorial Q-functions are then defined in terms of three sets of primed shifted tableaux, and shown to satisfy Tokuyama type identities in each case.

Fourier Coefficients for Degenerate Eisenstein Series and the Descending Decomposition
Published in Manuscripta Math., 156 (2018), pp. 469-501 • View Publication • BIB
We determine the unipotent orbits attached to degenerate Eisenstein series on general linear groups. This confirms a conjecture of David Ginzburg. This also shows that any unipotent orbit of general linear groups does occur as the unipotent orbit attached to a specific automorphic representation. The key ingredient is a root-theoretic result. To prove it, we introduce the notion of the descending decomposition, which expresses every Weyl group element as a product of simple reflections in a certain way. It is suitable for induction and allows us to translate the question into a combinatorial statement.

Infinite rank spinor and oscillator representations
Published in J. Comb. Algebra 1 (2017), no. 2, 145-183 • View Publication • BIB
We develop a functorial theory of spinor and oscillator representations parallel to the theory of Schur functors for general linear groups. This continues our work on developing orthogonal and symplectic analogues of Schur functors. As such, there are a few main points in common. We define a category of representations of what might be thought of as the infinite rank pin and metaplectic groups, and give three models of this category in terms of: multilinear algebra, diagram categories, and twisted Lie algebras. We also define specialization functors to the finite rank groups and calculate the derived functors.

Base sizes of imprimitive linear groups and orbits of general linear groups on spanning tuples
Published in Arch. Math. 106 (2016) 305-314 • View Publication • BIB
For a subgroup $L$ of the symmetric group $S_\ell$, we determine the minimal base size of $GL_d(q)\wr L$ acting on $V_d(q)^\ell$ as an imprimitive linear group. This is achieved by computing the number of orbits of $GL_d(q)$ on spanning $m$-tuples, which turns out to be the number of $d$-dimensional subspaces of $V_m(q)$. We then use these results to prove that for certain families of subgroups $L$, the affine groups whose stabilisers are large subgroups of $GL_d(q)\wr L$ satisfy a conjecture of Pyber concerning bases.

Chip firing on Dynkin diagrams and McKay quivers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Two classes of avalanche-finite matrices and their critical groups (integer cokernels) are studied from the viewpoint of chip-firing/sandpile dynamics, namely, the Cartan matrices of finite root systems and the McKay-Cartan matrices for finite subgroups G of general linear groups. In the root system case, the recurrent and superstable configurations are identified explicitly and are related to minuscule dominant weights. In the McKay-Cartan case for finite subgroups of the special linear group, the cokernel is related to the abelianization of the subgroup G. In the special case of the classical McKay correspondence, the critical group and the abelianization are shown to be isomorphic.

Projective modules over polyhedral semirings
Published • View Publication • BIB
I classify projective modules over idempotent semirings that are free on a monoid. The analysis extends to the case of the semiring of convex, piecewise-affine functions on a polyhedron, for which projective modules correspond to convex families of weight polyhedra for the general linear group.

Kostka multiplicity one for multipartitions
If $[λ(j)]$ is a multipartition of the positive integer $n$ (a sequence of partitions with total size $n$), and $μ$ is a partition of $n$, we study the number $K_{[λ(j)]μ}$ of sequences of semistandard Young tableaux of shape $[λ(j)]$ and total weight $μ$. We show that the numbers $K_{[λ(j)] μ}$ occur naturally as the multiplicities in certain permutation representations of wreath products. The main result is a set of conditions on $[λ(j)]$ and $μ$ which are equivalent to $K_{[λ(j)] μ} = 1$, generalizing a theorem of Berenshteĭn and Zelevinskiĭ. We also show that the questions of whether $K_{[λ(j)] μ} > 0$ or $K_{[λ(j)] μ} = 1$ can be answered in polynomial time, expanding on a result of Narayanan. Finally, we give an application to multiplicities in the degenerate Gel'fand-Graev representations of the finite general linear group, and we show that the problem of determining whether a given irreducible representation of the finite general linear group appears with nonzero multiplicity in a given degenerate Gel'fand-Graev representation, with their partition parameters as input, is $NP$-complete.

Absolute order in general linear groups
Published in J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 95 (2017), no. 1, 223--247 • View Publication • BIB
This paper studies a partial order on the general linear group GL(V) called the absolute order, derived from viewing GL(V) as a group generated by reflections, that is, elements whose fixed space has codimension one. The absolute order on GL(V) is shown to have two equivalent descriptions, one via additivity of length for factorizations into reflections, the other via additivity of fixed space codimensions. Other general properties of the order are derived, including self-duality of its intervals. Working over a finite field F_q, it is shown via a complex character computation that the poset interval from the identity to a Singer cycle (or any regular elliptic element) in GL_n(F_q) has a strikingly simple formula for the number of chains passing through a prescribed set of ranks.

Stability Properties Of The Plethysm: A Combinatorial Approach
Published • View Publication • BIB
An important family of structural constants in the theory of symmetric functions and in the representation theory of symmetric groups and general linear groups are the plethysm coefficients. In 1950, Foulkes observed that they have some stability properties: certain sequences of plethysm coefficients are eventually constant. Such stability properties were proven by Brion with geometric techniques, and by Thibon and Carré by means of vertex operators. In this paper we present a new approach to prove such stability properties. Our proofs are purely combinatorial and follow the same scheme. We decompose plethysm coefficients in terms of other plethysm coefficients related to the complete homogeneous basis of symmetric functions. We show that these other plethysm coefficients count integer points in polytopes and we prove stability for them by exhibiting bijections between the corresponding sets of integer points of each polytope.

The combinatorics of $\mathrm{GL}_n$ generalized Gelfand--Graev characters
Published • View Publication • BIB
Introduced by Kawanaka in order to find the unipotent representations of finite groups of Lie type, generalized Gelfand--Graev characters have remained somewhat mysterious. Even in the case of the finite general linear groups, the combinatorics of their decompositions has not been worked out. This paper re-interprets Kawanaka's definition in type $A$ in a way that gives far more flexibility in computations. We use these alternate constructions to show how to obtain generalized Gelfand--Graev representations directly from the maximal unipotent subgroups. We also explicitly decompose the corresponding generalized Gelfand--Graev characters in terms of unipotent representations, thereby recovering the Kostka--Foulkes polynomials as multiplicities.

Quantum permanents and Hafnians via Pfaffians
Published in Lett. Math. Phys. 106 (2016), 1451-1464 • View Publication • BIB
Quantum determinants and Pfaffians or permanents and Hafnians are introduced on the two parameter quantum general linear group. Fundamental identities among quantum Pf, Hf, and det are proved in the general setting. We show that there are two special quantum algebras among the quantum groups, where the quantum Pfaffians have integral Laurent polynomials as coefficients. As a consequence, the quantum Hafnian is computed by a closely related quantum permanent and identical to the quantum Pfaffian on this special quantum algebra.

The irreducible unipotent modules of the finite general linear groups via tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct the irreducible unipotent modules of the finite general linear groups using tableaux. Our construction is analogous to that of James (1976) for the symmetric groups, answering an open question as to whether such a construction exists. Our modules are defined over any field containing a nontrivial $p^\text{th}$ root of unity (where $p$ is the defining characteristic of the group). We show that our modules are isomorphic to those constructed by James (1984), although the two constructions utilize quite different approaches. Finally we look closer at the complex irreducible unipotent modules, providing motivation for our construction.

Symmetric bilinear forms over finite fields with applications to coding theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $q$ be an odd prime power and let $X(m,q)$ be the set of symmetric bilinear forms on an $m$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$. The partition of $X(m,q)$ induced by the action of the general linear group gives rise to a commutative translation association scheme. We give explicit expressions for the eigenvalues of this scheme in terms of linear combinations of generalised Krawtchouk polynomials. We then study $d$-codes in this scheme, namely subsets $Y$ of $X(m,q)$ with the property that, for all distinct $A,B\in Y$, the rank of $A-B$ is at least $d$. We prove bounds on the size of a $d$-code and show that, under certain conditions, the inner distribution of a $d$-code is determined by its parameters. Constructions of $d$-codes are given, which are optimal among the $d$-codes that are subgroups of $X(m,q)$. Finally, with every subset $Y$ of $X(m,q)$, we associate two classical codes over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and show that their Hamming distance enumerators can be expressed in terms of the inner distribution of $Y$. As an example, we obtain the distance enumerators of certain cyclic codes, for which many special cases have been previously obtained using long ad hoc calculations.

A generating function approach to counting theorems for square-free polynomials and maximal tori
Published • View Publication • BIB
A recent paper of Church, Ellenberg, and Farb uses topology and representation theory of the symmetric group to prove enumerative results about square-free polynomials and F-stable maximal tori of the general linear group over the algebraic closure of F_q. In this note, we use generating functions to give elementary proofs of some of their results, and some extensions.

Hopf Algebras in Combinatorics
These notes -- originating from a one-semester class by their second author at the University of Minnesota -- survey some of the most important Hopf algebras appearing in combinatorics. After introducing coalgebras, bialgebras and Hopf algebras in general, we study the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, including Zelevinsky's axiomatic characterization of it as a "positive self-adjoint Hopf algebra" and its application to the representation theory of symmetric and (briefly) finite general linear groups. The notes then continue with the quasisymmetric and the noncommutative symmetric functions, some Hopf algebras formed from graphs, posets and matroids, and the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. Among the results surveyed are the Littlewood-Richardson rule and other symmetric function identities, Zelevinsky's structure theorem for PSHs, the antipode formula for P-partition enumerators, the Aguiar-Bergeron-Sottile universal property of QSym, the theory of Lyndon words, the Gessel-Reutenauer bijection, and Hazewinkel's polynomial freeness of QSym. The notes are written with a graduate student reader in mind, being mostly self-contained but requiring a good familiarity with multilinear algebra and -- for the representation-theory applications -- basic group representation theory.

Chains in Weak Order Posets Associated to Involutions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The W-set of an element of a weak order poset is useful in the cohomological study of the closures of spherical subgroups in generalized flag varieties. We explicitly describe in a purely combinatorial manner the W-sets of the weak order posets of three different sets of involutions in the symmetric group, namely, the set of all involutions, the set of all fixed point free involutions, and the set of all involutions with signed fixed points (or "clans"). These distinguished sets of involutions parameterize Borel orbits in the classical symmetric spaces associated to the general linear group. In particular, we give a complete characterization of the maximal chains of an arbitrary lower order ideal in any of these three posets.
Wreath determinants for group-subgroup pairs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The aim of the present paper is to generalize the notion of the group determinants for finite groups. For a finite group $G$ of order $kn$ and its subgroup $H$ of order $n$, one may define an $n$ by $kn$ matrix $X=(x_{hg^{-1}})_{h\in H,g\in G}$, where $x_g$ ($g\in G$) are indeterminates indexed by the elements in $G$. Then, we define an invariant $Θ(G,H)$ for a given pair $(G,H)$ by the $k$-wreath determinant of the matrix $X$, where $k$ is the index of $H$ in $G$. The $k$-wreath determinant of $n$ by $kn$ matrix is a relative invariant of the left action by the general linear group of order $k$ and right action by the wreath product of two symmetric groups of order $k$ and $n$. Since the definition of $Θ(G,H)$ is ordering-sensitive, representation theory of symmetric groups are naturally involved. In this paper, we treat abelian groups with a special choice of indeterminates and give various examples of non-abelian group-subgroup pairs.
