$K$-theoretic Catalan functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the $K$-$k$-Schur functions are part of a family of inhomogenous symmetric functions whose top homogeneous components are Catalan functions, the Euler characteristics of certain vector bundles on the flag variety. Lam-Schilling-Shimozono identified the $K$-$k$-Schur functions as Schubert representatives for $K$-homology of the affine Grassmannian for SL$_{k+1}$. Our perspective reveals that the $K$-$k$-Schur functions satisfy a shift invariance property, and we deduce positivity of their branching coefficients from a positivity result of Baldwin and Kumar. We further show that a slight adjustment of our formulation for $K$-$k$-Schur functions produces a second shift-invariant basis which conjecturally has both positive branching and a rectangle factorization property. Building on work of Ikeda-Iwao-Maeno, we conjecture that this second basis gives the images of the Lenart-Maeno quantum Grothendieck polynomials under a $K$-theoretic analog of the Peterson isomorphism.
Isocanted alcoved polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Through tropical normal idempotent matrices, we introduce isocanted alcoved polytopes, computing their $f$--vectors and checking the validity of the following five conjectures: Bárány, unimodality, $3^d$, flag and cubical lower bound (CLBC). Isocanted alcoved polytopes are centrally symmetric, almost simple cubical polytopes. They are zonotopes. We show that, for each dimension, there is a unique combinatorial type. In dimension $d$, an isocanted alcoved polytope has $2^{d+1}-2$ vertices, its face lattice is the lattice of proper subsets of $[d+1]$ and its diameter is $d+1$. They are realizations of $d$--elementary cubical polytopes. The $f$--vector of a $d$--dimensional isocanted alcoved polytope attains its maximum at the integer $\lfloor d/3\rfloor$.

Pipe dreams for Schubert polynomials of the classical groups
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 107 (2023) 103613 • View Publication • BIB
Schubert polynomials for the classical groups were defined by S.Billey and M.Haiman in 1995; they are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in a full flag variety of a classical group. We provide a combinatorial description for these polynomials, as well as their double versions, by introducing analogues of pipe dreams, or RC-graphs, for the Weyl groups of the classical types.
Geometric properties of the Kazhdan-Lusztig Schubert basis
Published in Alg. Number Th. 17 (2023) 169-198 • View Publication • BIB
We study classes determined by the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of the Hecke algebra in the $K$-theory and hyperbolic cohomology theory of flag varieties. We first show that, in $K$-theory, the two different choices of Kazhdan-Lusztig bases produce dual bases, one of which can be interpreted as characteristic classes of the intersection homology mixed Hodge modules. In equivariant hyperbolic cohomology, we show that if the Schubert variety is smooth, then the class it determines coincides with the class of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis; this was known as the Smoothness Conjecture. For Grassmannians, we prove that the classes of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis coincide with the classes determined by Zelevinsky's small resolutions. These properties of the so-called KL-Schubert basis show that it is the closest existing analogue to the Schubert basis for hyperbolic cohomology; the latter is a very useful testbed for more general elliptic cohomologies.

Friends and Strangers Walking on Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given graphs $X$ and $Y$ with vertex sets $V(X)$ and $V(Y)$ of the same cardinality, we define a graph $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ whose vertex set consists of all bijections $σ:V(X)\to V(Y)$, where two bijections $σ$ and $σ'$ are adjacent if they agree everywhere except for two adjacent vertices $a,b \in V(X)$ such that $σ(a)$ and $σ(b)$ are adjacent in $Y$. This setup, which has a natural interpretation in terms of friends and strangers walking on graphs, provides a common generalization of Cayley graphs of symmetric groups generated by transpositions, the famous $15$-puzzle, generalizations of the $15$-puzzle as studied by Wilson, and work of Stanley related to flag $h$-vectors. We derive several general results about the graphs $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ before focusing our attention on some specific choices of $X$. When $X$ is a path graph, we show that the connected components of $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ correspond to the acyclic orientations of the complement of $Y$. When $X$ is a cycle, we obtain a full description of the connected components of $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ in terms of toric acyclic orientations of the complement of $Y$. We then derive various necessary and/or sufficient conditions on the graphs $X$ and $Y$ that guarantee the connectedness of $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$. Finally, we raise several promising further questions.

Tight Chiral Polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A chiral polytope with Schläfli symbol $\{p_1, \ldots, p_{n-1}\}$ has at least $2p_1 \cdots p_{n-1}$ flags, and it is called \emph{tight} if the number of flags meets this lower bound. The Schläfli symbols of tight chiral polyhedra were classified in an earlier paper, and another paper proved that there are no tight chiral $n$-polytopes with $n \geq 6$. Here we prove that there are no tight chiral $5$-polytopes, describe 11 families of tight chiral $4$-polytopes, and show that every tight chiral $4$-polytope covers a polytope from one of those families.
Standard monomial theory and toric degenerations of Richardson varieties inside Grassmannians and flag varieties
We study toric degenerations of opposite Schubert and Richardson varieties inside degenerations of Grassmannians and flag varieties. These degenerations are parametrized by matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels and Zelevinsky. We construct so-called restricted matching field ideals whose generating sets are understood combinatorially through tableaux. We determine when these ideals are toric and coincide with Gröbner degenerations of Richardson varieties using the well established standard monomial theory for Grassmannians and flag varieties.

Standard monomial theory and toric degenerations of Schubert varieties from matching field tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study Gröbner degenerations of Schubert varieties inside flag varieties. We consider toric degenerations of flag varieties induced by matching fields and semi-standard Young tableaux. We describe an analogue of matching field ideals for Schubert varieties inside the flag variety and give a complete characterization of toric ideals among them. We use a combinatorial approach to standard monomial theory to show that block diagonal matching fields give rise to toric degenerations. Our methods and results use the combinatorics of permutations associated to Schubert varieties, matching fields and their corresponding tableaux.

Orbit embedding for double flag varieties and Steinberg map
Published in Contemporary Mathematics, 2021 • View Publication • BIB
In the first half of this article, we review the Steinberg theory for double flag varieties for symmetric pairs. For a special case of the symmetric space of type AIII, we will consider $ X = GL_{2n}/P_{(n,n)} \times GL_n / B_n^+ \times GL_n / B_n^- $ on which $ K = GL_n \times GL_n $ acts diagonally. We give a classification of $ K $-orbits in $ X $, and explicit combinatorial description of the Steinberg maps. In the latter half, we develop the theory of embedding of a double flag variety into a larger one. This embedding is a powerful tool to study different types of double flag varieties in terms of the known ones. We prove an embedding theorem of orbits in full generality and give an example of type CI which is embedded into type AIII.

An affine approach to Peterson comparison
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Peterson comparison formula proved by Woodward relates the three-pointed Gromov-Witten invariants for the quantum cohomology of partial flag varieties to those for the complete flag. Another such comparison can be obtained by composing a combinatorial version of the Peterson isomorphism with a result of Lapointe and Morse relating quantum Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for the Grassmannian to k-Schur analogs in the homology of the affine Grassmannian obtained by adding rim hooks. We show that these comparisons on quantum cohomology are equivalent, up to Postnikov's strange duality isomorphism.

Semitoric degenerations of Hibi varieties and flag varieties
We construct a family of flat semitoric degenerations for the Hibi variety of every finite distributive lattice. The irreducible components of each degeneration are the toric varieties associated with polytopes forming a regular subdivision of the order polytope of the underlying poset. These components are themselves Hibi varieties. For each degeneration in our family we also define the corresponding weight polytope and embed the degeneration into the associated toric variety as the union of orbit closures given by a set of faces. Every such weight polytope projects onto the order polytope with the chosen faces projecting into the parts of the corresponding regular subdivision. We apply these constructions to obtain a family of flat semitoric degenerations for every type A Grassmannian and complete flag variety.

Left Demazure-Lusztig operators on equivariant (quantum) cohomology and K theory
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2022, Issue 16, August 2022, Pages 12096-12147 • View Publication • BIB
We study the Demazure-Lusztig operators induced by the left multiplication on partial flag manifolds $G/P$. We prove that they generate the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells (in equivariant cohomology), respectively their motivic Chern classes (in equivariant K theory), in any partial flag manifold. Along the way we advertise many properties of the left and right divided difference operators in cohomology and K theory, and their actions on Schubert classes. We apply this to construct left divided difference operators in equivariant quantum cohomology, and equivariant quantum K theory, generating Schubert classes, and satisfying a Leibniz rule compatible with the quantum product.
Inverse $K$-Chevalley formulas for semi-infinite flag manifolds, I: minuscule weights in ADE type
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove an explicit inverse Chevalley formula in the equivariant $K$-theory of semi-infinite flag manifolds of simply-laced type. By an inverse Chevalley formula, we mean a formula for the product of an equivariant scalar with a Schubert class, expressed as a $\mathbb{Z}[q^{\pm 1}]$-linear combination of Schubert classes twisted by equivariant line bundles. Our formula applies to arbitrary Schubert classes in semi-infinite flag manifolds of simply-laced type and equivariant scalars $e^λ$, where $λ$ is an arbitrary minuscule weight. By a result of Stembridge, our formula completely determines the inverse Chevalley formula for arbitrary weights in simply-laced type, except for type $E_8$. The combinatorics of our formula is governed by the quantum Bruhat graph, and the proof is based on a limit from the double affine Hecke algebra. As such, our formula also provides an explicit determination of all nonsymmetric $q$-Toda operators for minuscule weights in ADE type.

Schubert calculus from polyhedral parametrizations of Demazure crystals
Published • View Publication • BIB
One approach to Schubert calculus is to realize Schubert classes as concrete combinatorial objects such as Schubert polynomials. Through an identification of the cohomology ring of the type A full flag variety with the polytope ring of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin realized each Schubert class as a sum of reduced (dual) Kogan faces. In this paper, we explicitly describe string parametrizations of opposite Demazure crystals, which give a natural generalization of reduced dual Kogan faces. We also relate reduced Kogan faces with Demazure crystals using the theory of mitosis operators, and apply these observations to develop the theory of Schubert calculus on symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes.

Signed Mahonian on Parabolic Quotients of Colored Permutation Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the generating polynomial of the flag major index with each one-dimensional character, called signed Mahonian polynomial, over the colored permutation group, the wreath product of a cyclic group with the symmetric group. Using the insertion lemma of Han and Haglund-Loehr-Remmel and a signed extension established by Eu et al., we derive the signed Mahonian polynomial over the quotients of parabolic subgroups of the colored permutation group, for a variety of systems of coset representatives in terms of subsequence restrictions. This generalizes the related work over parabolic quotients of the symmetric group due to Caselli as well as to Eu et al. As a byproduct, we derive a product formula that generalizes Biagioli's result about the signed Mahonian on the even signed permutation groups.

The Universal Valuation of Coxeter Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Coxeter matroids generalize matroids just as flag varieties of Lie groups generalize Grassmannians. Valuations of Coxeter matroids are functions that behave well with respect to subdivisions of a Coxeter matroid into smaller ones. We compute the universal valuative invariant of Coxeter matroids. A key ingredient is the family of Coxeter Schubert matroids, which correspond to the Bruhat cells of flag varieties. In the process, we compute the universal valuation of generalized Coxeter permutohedra, a larger family of polyhedra that model Coxeter analogues of combinatorial objects such as matroids, clusters, and posets.

Planar Matrices and Arrays of Feynman Diagrams: Poles for Higher $k$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Planar arrays of tree diagrams were introduced as a generalization of Feynman diagrams that enables the computation biadjoint amplitudes $m^{(k)}_n$ for $k>2$ . In this follow-up work we investigate the poles of $m^{(k)}_n$ from the perspective of such arrays. For general $k$ we characterize the underlying polytope as a Flag Complex and propose a computation of the amplitude based solely on the knowledge of poles, which number is drastically less than the number of full arrays. As an example we first provide all the poles for the cases $(k,n)=(3,7),(3,8),(4,8)$ and $(4,9)$ in terms of their generalized Feynman diagrams. We then implement a simple compatibility criteria together with an addition operation between arrays, and recover the full collections/arrays recently presented for such cases. Along the way we implement hard and soft kinematical limits, which provide a map between poles in kinematic space and their combinatoric arrays. We use the operation to give a proof of a previously conjectured combinatorial duality for arrays in $(k,n)$ and $(n-k,n)$. We also outline the relation to boundary maps of the hypersimplex $Δ_{k,n}$ and rays in the tropical Grassmannian $\textrm{Tr}(k,n)$.

Characteristic dependence of syzygies of random monomial ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
When do syzygies depend on the characteristic of the field? Even for well-studied families of examples, very little is known. For a family of random monomial ideals, namely the Stanley--Reisner ideals of random flag complexes, we prove that the Betti numbers asymptotically almost always depend on the characteristic. Using this result, we also develop a heuristic for characteristic dependence of asymptotic syzygies of algebraic varieties.

A Birkhoff-Bruhat Atlas for partial flag varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
A partial flag variety ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ of a Kac-Moody group $G$ has a natural stratification into projected Richardson varieties. When $G$ is a connected reductive group, a Bruhat atlas for ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ was constructed by He, Knutson and Lu: ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ is locally modeled with Schubert varieties in some Kac-Moody flag variety as stratified spaces. The existence of Bruaht atlases implies some nice combinatorial and geometric properties on the partial flag varieties and the decomposition into projected Richardson varieties. A Bruhat atlas does not exist for partial flag varieties of an arbitrary Kac-Moody group due to combinatorial and geometric reasons. To overcome obstructions, we introduce the notion of Birkhoff-Bruhat atlas. Instead of the Schubert varieties used in a Bruhat atlas, we use the $J$-Schubert varieties for a Birkhoff-Bruhat atlas. The notion of the $J$-Schubert varieties interpolates Birkhoff decomposition and Bruhat decomposition of the full flag variety (of a larger Kac-Moody group). The main result of this paper is the construction of a Birkhoff-Bruhat atlas for any partial flag variety ${\mathcal {P}}_K$ of a Kac-Moody group. We also construct a combinatorial atlas for the index set $Q_K$ of the projected Richardson varieties in ${\mathcal {P}}_K$. As a consequence, we show that $Q_K$ has some nice combinatorial properties. This gives a new proof and generalizes the work of Williams in the case where the group $G$ is a connected reductive group.

Coxeter combinatorics and spherical Schubert geometry
Published in Journal of Lie Theory 32 (2022), No. 2, 447--474 • View Publication • BIB
For a finite Coxeter system and a subset of its diagram nodes, we define spherical elements (a generalization of Coxeter elements). Conjecturally, for Weyl groups, spherical elements index Schubert varieties in a flag manifold G/B that are spherical for the action of a Levi subgroup. We evidence the conjecture, employing the combinatorics of Demazure modules, and work of R. Avdeev-A. Petukhov, M. Can-R. Hodges, R. Hodges-V. Lakshmibai, P. Karuppuchamy, P. Magyar-J. Weyman-A. Zelevinsky, N. Perrin, J. Stembridge, and B. Tenner. In type A, we establish connections with the key polynomials of A. Lascoux- M.-P. Schützenberger, multiplicity-freeness, and split-symmetry in algebraic combinatorics. Thereby, we invoke theorems of A. Kohnert, V. Reiner-M. Shimozono, and C. Ross-A. Yong.
