Inequalities for $f^*$-vectors of Lattice Polytopes
Published in Advances in Geometry 24 (2024), no. 2, 141-150 • View Publication • BIB
The Ehrhart polynomial $\text{ehr}_P(n)$ of a lattice polytope $P$ counts the number of integer points in the $n$-th integral dilate of $P$. The $f^*$-vector of $P$, introduced by Felix Breuer in 2012, is the vector of coefficients of $\text{ehr}_P(n)$ with respect to the binomial coefficient basis $ \left\{\binom{n-1}{0},\binom{n-1}{1},...,\binom{n-1}{d}\right\}$, where $d = \dim P$. Similarly to $h/h^*$-vectors, the $f^*$-vector of $P$ coincides with the $f$-vector of its unimodular triangulations (if they exist). We present several inequalities that hold among the coefficients of $f^*$-vectors of polytopes. These inequalities resemble striking similarities with existing inequalities for the coefficients of $f$-vectors of simplicial polytopes; e.g., the first half of the $f^*$-coefficients increases and the last quarter decreases. Even though $f^*$-vectors of polytopes are not always unimodal, there are several families of polytopes that carry the unimodality property. We also show that for any polytope with a given Ehrhart $h^*$-vector, there is a polytope with the same $h^*$-vector whose $f^*$-vector is unimodal.
Beyond positivity in Ehrhart Theory
We study semigroup algebras arising from lattice polytopes, compute their volume polynomials (particularizing work of Hochster), and establish strong Lefschetz properties (generalizing work of the first three authors). This resolves several conjectures concerning unimodality properties of the $h^\ast$-polynomial of lattice polytopes arising within Ehrhart theory.

An Ehrhart Theory For Tautological Intersection Numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We discover that tautological intersection numbers on $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g, n}$, the moduli space of stable genus $g$ curves with $n$ marked points, are evaluations of Ehrhart polynomials of partial polytopal complexes. In order to prove this, we realize the Virasoro constraints for tautological intersection numbers as a recursion for integer-valued polynomials. Then we apply a theorem of Breuer that classifies Ehrhart polynomials of partial polytopal complexes by the nonnegativity of their $f^*$-vector. In dimensions 1 and 2, we show that the polytopal complexes that arise are \emph{inside-out polytopes} i.e. polytopes that are dissected by a hyperplane arrangement.

The equivariant Ehrhart theory of polytopes with order-two symmetries
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the equivariant Ehrhart theory of families of polytopes that are invariant under a non-trivial action of the group with order two. We study families of polytopes whose equivariant $H^*$-polynomial both succeed and fail to be effective, in particular, the symmetric edge polytopes of cycles and the rational cross-polytope. The latter provides a counterexample to the effectiveness conjecture if the requirement that the vertices of the polytope have integral coordinates is loosened to allow rational coordinates. Moreover, we exhibit such a counterexample whose Ehrhart function has period one and coincides with the Ehrhart function of a lattice polytope.

Valuative invariants for large classes of matroids
Published in Journal of the London Mathematical Society, Vol. 110(3), Sep. 2024, e12984 • View Publication • BIB
We study an operation in matroid theory that allows one to transition a given matroid into another with more bases via relaxing a \emph{stressed subset}. This framework provides a new combinatorial characterization of the class of split matroids. Moreover, it permits to describe an explicit matroid subdivision of a hypersimplex, which in turn can be used to write down concrete formulas for the evaluations of any valuative invariant on these matroids. This shows that evaluations on split matroids depend solely on the behavior of the invariant on tractable subclass of Schubert matroids. We address systematically the consequences of our approach for several invariants. They include the volume and Ehrhart polynomial of base polytopes, the Tutte polynomial, Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, the Whitney numbers of the first and second kind, spectrum polynomials and a generalization of these by Denham, chain polynomials and Speyer's $g$-polynomials, as well as Chow rings of matroids and their Hilbert--Poincaré series. The flexibility of this setting allows us to give a unified explanation for several recent results regarding the listed invariants; furthermore, we emphasize it as a powerful computational tool to produce explicit data and concrete examples.

Perfectly Matchable Set Polynomials and $h^*$-polynomials for Stable Set Polytopes of Complements of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A subset $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is called a perfectly matchable set of $G$ if the subgraph induced by $S$ contains a perfect matching. The perfectly matchable set polynomial of $G$, first made explicit by Ohsugi and Tsuchiya, is the (ordinary) generating function $p(G; z)$ for the number of perfectly matchable sets of $G$. In this work, we provide explicit recurrences for computing $p(G; z)$ for an arbitrary (simple) graph and use these to compute the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials for certain lattice polytopes. Namely, we show that $p(G; z)$ is the $h^*$-polynomial for certain classes of stable set polytopes, whose vertices correspond to stable sets of $G$.
Thin polytopes: Lattice polytopes with vanishing local $h^*$-polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the novel notion of thin polytopes: lattice polytopes whose local $h^*$-polynomials vanish. The local $h^*$-polynomial is an important invariant in modern Ehrhart theory. Its definition goes back to Stanley with fundamental results achieved by Karu, Borisov & Mavlyutov, Schepers, and Katz & Stapledon. The study of thin simplices was originally proposed by Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky, where in this case the local $h^*$-polynomial simply equals its so-called box polynomial. Our main results are the complete classification of thin polytopes up to dimension 3 and the characterization of thinness for Gorenstein polytopes. The paper also includes an introduction to the local $h^*$-polynomial with a survey of previous results.

Properties of Ehrhart Polynomials whose Roots Lie on the Critical Line
We study a class of polynomials that has all of its roots on the critical line and shares many properties with Ehrhart polynomials. Braun showed that the roots of Ehrhart polynomials are bounded quadratically and Higashitani provided examples for polytopes whose Ehrhart polynomial roots come close to this bound. In the case of polytopes which have their roots on the critical line, we present an improved bound. As a side effect this confirms a special case of a conjecture of Braun.

Grassmannians in the Lattice points of Dilations of the Standard Simplex
A remarkable connection between the cohomology ring ${\rm H^{\ast}(Gr}(d, d+r),\Z)$ of the Grasssmannian ${\rm Gr}(d,d+r)$ and the lattice points of the dilation $rΔ_{d}$ of the standard d-simplex is investigated. The natural grading on the cohomology induces different gradings of the lattice points of $rΔ_{d}$. This leads to different refinements of the Ehrhart polynomial $L_{Δ_{d}}(r)$ of the standard $d$-simplex. We study two of these refinements which are defined by the weights $(1,1,\dots,1)$ and $(1,2,\dots, d)$. One of the refinements interprets the Poincaré polynomial ${\rm P(Gr}(d,d+r),z)$ as the counting of the lattice points which lie on the slicing hyperplanes of the dilation $rΔ_d$. Therefore, on the combinatorial level the Poincaré polynomial of the Grassmannian Gr$(d,d+r)$ is a refinement of the Ehrhart polynomial $L_{Δ_d}(r)$ of the standard $d$-simplex $Δ_{d}$.

Boundary $h^\ast$-polynomials of rational polytopes
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 37 (2023), no. 3, 1952-1969 • View Publication • BIB
If $P$ is a lattice polytope (i.e., $P$ is the convex hull of finitely many integer points in $\mathbb{R}^d$) of dimension $d$, Ehrhart's famous theorem (1962) asserts that the integer-point counting function $|nP \cap \mathbb{Z}^d|$ is a degree-$d$ polynomial in the integer variable $n$. Equivalently, the generating function $1 + \sum_{n\geq 1} |nP \cap \mathbb{Z}^d| \, z^n$ is a rational function of the form $\frac{ h^\ast(z) }{ (1-z)^{ d+1 } }$; we call $h^\ast(z)$ the $h^\ast$-polynomial of $P$. There are several known necessary conditions for $h^\ast$-polynomials, including results by Hibi (1990), Stanley (1991), and Stapledon (2009), who used an interplay of arithmetic (integer-point structure) and topological (local $h$-vectors of triangulations) data of a given polytope. We introduce an alternative ansatz to understand Ehrhart theory through the $h^\ast$-polynomial of the boundary of a polytope, recovering all of the above results and their extensions for rational polytopes in a unifying manner. We include applications for (rational) Gorenstein polytopes and rational Ehrhart dilations.

Techniques in equivariant Ehrhart theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
Equivariant Ehrhart theory generalizes the study of lattice point enumeration to also account for the symmetries of a polytope under a linear group action. We present a catalogue of techniques with applications in this field, including zonotopal decompositions, symmetric triangulations, combinatorial interpretation of the $h^\ast$-polynomial, and certificates for the (non)existence of invariant non-degenerate hypersurfaces. We apply these methods to several families of examples including hypersimplices, orbit polytopes, and graphic zonotopes, expanding the library of polytopes for which their equivariant Ehrhart theory is known.

Lattice zonotopes of degree 2
Published in Beiträge zur Algebra und Geometrie 64 (2023), 1011-1025 • View Publication • BIB
The Ehrhart polynomial $ehr_P (n)$ of a lattice polytope $P$ gives the number of integer lattice points in the $n$-th dilate of $P$ for all integers $n\geq 0$. The degree of $P$ is defined as the degree of its $h^\ast$-polynomial, a particular transformation of the Ehrhart polynomial with many useful properties which serves as an important tool for classification questions in Ehrhart theory. A zonotope is the Minkowski (pointwise) sum of line segments. We classify all Ehrhart polynomials of lattice zonotopes of degree $2$ thereby complementing results of Scott (1976), Treutlein (2010), and Henk-Tagami (2009). Our proof is constructive: by considering solid-angles and the lattice width, we provide a characterization of all $3$-dimensional zonotopes of degree $2$.

Triangulations of Flow Polytopes, Ample Framings, and Gentle Algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
The cone of nonnegative flows for a directed acyclic graph (DAG) is known to admit regular unimodular triangulations induced by framings of the DAG. These triangulations restrict to triangulations of the flow polytope for strength one flows, which are called DKK triangulations. For a special class of framings called ample framings, these triangulations of the flow cone project to a complete fan. We characterize the DAGs that admit ample framings, and we enumerate the number of ample framings for a fixed DAG. We establish a connection between maximal simplices in DKK triangulations and $τ$-tilting posets for certain gentle algebras, which allows us to impose a poset structure on the dual graph of any DKK triangulation for an amply framed DAG. Using this connection, we are able to prove that for full DAGs, i.e., those DAGs with inner vertices having in-degree and out-degree equal to two, the flow polytopes are Gorenstein and have unimodal Ehrhart $h^\ast$-polynomials.

Lattice points in slices of prisms
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 77 (2025) 1013-1040 • View Publication • BIB
We conduct a systematic study of the Ehrhart theory of certain slices of rectangular prisms. Our polytopes are generalizations of the hypersimplex and are contained in the larger class of polypositroids introduced by Lam and Postnikov; moreover, they coincide with polymatroids satisfying the strong exchange property up to an affinity. We give a combinatorial formula for all the Ehrhart coefficients in terms of the number of weighted permutations satisfying certain compatibility properties. This result proves that all these polytopes are Ehrhart positive. Additionally, via an extension of a result by Early and Kim, we give a combinatorial interpretation for all the coefficients of the $h^*$-polynomial. All of our results provide a combinatorial understanding of the Hilbert functions and the $h$-vectors of all algebras of Veronese type, a problem that had remained elusive up to this point. A variety of applications are discussed, including expressions for the volumes of these slices of prisms as weighted combinations of Eulerian numbers; some extensions of Laplace's result on the combinatorial interpretation of the volume of the hypersimplex; a multivariate generalization of the flag Eulerian numbers and refinements; and a short proof of the Ehrhart positivity of the independence polytope of all uniform matroids.
Ehrhart Theory of Paving and Panhandle Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the base polytope $P_M$ of any paving matroid $M$ can be systematically obtained from a hypersimplex by slicing off certain subpolytopes, namely base polytopes of lattice path matroids corresponding to panhandle-shaped Ferrers diagrams. We calculate the Ehrhart polynomials of these matroids and consequently write down the Ehrhart polynomial of $P_M$, starting with Katzman's formula for the Ehrhart polynomial of a hypersimplex. The method builds on and generalizes Ferroni's work on sparse paving matroids. Combinatorially, our construction corresponds to constructing a uniform matroid from a paving matroid by iterating the operation of stressed-hyperplane relaxation introduced by Ferroni, Nasr, and Vecchi, which generalizes the standard matroid-theoretic notion of circuit-hyperplane relaxation. We present evidence that panhandle matroids are Ehrhart positive and describe a conjectured combinatorial formula involving chain forests and Eulerian numbers from which Ehrhart positivity of panhandle matroids will follow. As an application of the main result, we calculate the Ehrhart polynomials of matroids associated with Steiner systems and finite projective planes, and show that they depend only on their design-theoretic parameters: for example, while projective planes of the same order need not have isomorphic matroids, their base polytopes must be Ehrhart equivalent.

Ehrhart theory of symmetric edge polytopes via ribbon structures
Using a ribbon structure of the graph, we construct a dissection of the symmetric edge polytope of a graph into unimodular simplices. Our dissection is shellable, and one can interpret the elements of the resulting $h$-vector via graph theory. This gives an elementary method for computing the $h^*$-vector of the symmetric edge polytope.

On the moments of moments of random matrices and Ehrhart polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
There has been significant interest in studying the asymptotics of certain generalised moments, called the moments of moments, of characteristic polynomials of random Haar-distributed unitary and symplectic matrices, as the matrix size $N$ goes to infinity. These quantities depend on two parameters $k$ and $q$ and when both of them are positive integers it has been shown that these moments are in fact polynomials in the matrix size $N$. In this paper we classify the integer roots of these polynomials and moreover prove that the polynomials themselves satisfy a certain symmetry property. This confirms some predictions from the thesis of Bailey. The proof uses the Ehrhart-Macdonald reciprocity for rational convex polytopes and certain bijections between lattice points in some polytopes.

On the Ehrhart Polynomial of Schubert Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we give a formula for the number of lattice points in the dilations of Schubert matroid polytopes. As applications, we obtain the Ehrhart polynomials of uniform and minimal matroids as special cases, and give a recursive formula for the Ehrhart polynomials of $(a,b)$-Catalan matroids. Ferroni showed that uniform and minimal matroids are Ehrhart positive. We show that all sparse paving Schubert matroids are Ehrhart positive and their Ehrhart polynomials are coefficient-wisely bounded by those of minimal and uniform matroids. This confirms a conjecture of Ferroni for the case of sparse paving Schubert matroids. Furthermore, we introduce notched rectangle matroids, which include minimal matroids, sparse paving Schubert matroids and panhandle matroids. We show that three subfamilies of notched rectangle matroids are Ehrhart positive, and conjecture that all notched rectangle matroids are Ehrhart positive.

Rational Ehrhart Theory
Published in Integers: the Electronic Journal of Combinatorial Number Theory 23 (2023), A 60 (31 pages) • Search Publication
The Ehrhart quasipolynomial of a rational polytope $\mathsf{P}$ encodes fundamental arithmetic data of $\mathsf{P}$, namely, the number of integer lattice points in positive integral dilates of $\mathsf{P}$. Ehrhart quasipolynomials were introduced in the 1960s, satisfy several fundamental structural results and have applications in many areas of mathematics and beyond. The enumerative theory of lattice points in rational (equivalently, real) dilates of rational polytopes is much younger, starting with work by Linke (2011), Baldoni-Berline-Koeppe-Vergne (2013), and Stapledon (2017). We introduce a generating-function ansatz for rational Ehrhart quasipolynomials, which unifies several known results in classical and rational Ehrhart theory. In particular, we define $γ$-rational Gorenstein polytopes, which extend the classical notion to the rational setting and encompass the generalized reflexive polytopes studied by Fiset-Kasprzyk (2008) and Kasprzyk-Nill (2012).
