Closed graphs have been characterized by Herzog et al. as the graphs whose binomial edge ideals have a quadratic Gröbner basis with respect to a diagonal term order. In this paper, we focus on a generalization of closed graphs, namely weakly-closed graphs (or co-comparability graphs). Build on some results about Knutson ideals of generic matrices, we characterize weakly closed graphs as the only graphs whose binomial edge ideals are Knutson ideals for a certain polynomial $f$. In doing so, we re-prove Matsuda's theorem about the F-purity of binomial edge ideals of weakly closed graphs in positive characteristic and we extend it to generalized binomial edge ideals. Furthermore, we give a characterization of weakly closed graphs in terms of the minimal primes of their binomial edge ideals and we characterize all minimal primes of Knutson ideals for this choice of $f$.

In this paper we study the normality of monomial ideals using linear programming and graph theory. We give normality criteria for monomial ideals, for ideals generated by monomials of degree two, and for edge ideals of graphs and clutters and their ideals of covers.

Edge ideals of finite simple graphs are well-studied over polynomial rings. In this paper, we initiate the study of edge ideals over exterior algebras, specifically focusing on the depth and singular varieties of such ideals. We prove an upper bound on the depth of the edge ideal associated to a general graph and a more refined bound for bipartite graphs, and we show that both are tight. We also compute the depth of several large families of graphs including cycles, complete multipartite graphs, spider graphs, and Ferrers graphs. Finally, we focus on the effect whiskering a graph has on the depth of the associated edge ideal.

Assume that $G$ is a graph with edge ideal $I(G)$ and matching number ${\rm match}(G)$. For every integer $s\geq 1$, we denote the $s$-th squarefree power of $I(G)$ by $I(G)^{[s]}$. It is shown that for every positive integer $s\leq {\rm match}(G)$, the inequality ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{[s]})\leq {\rm match}(G)+s$ holds provided that $G$ belongs to either of the following classes: (i) very well-covered graphs, (ii) semi-Hamiltonian graphs, or (iii) sequentially Cohen-Macaulay graphs. Moreover, we prove that for every Cameron-Walker graph $G$ and for every positive integer $s\leq {\rm match}(G)$, we have ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{[s]})={\rm match}(G)+s$

In this paper, we study the Hankel edge ideals of graphs. We determine the minimal prime ideals of the Hankel edge ideal of labeled Hamiltonian and semi-Hamiltonian graphs, and we investigate radicality, being a complete intersection, almost complete intersection and set theoretic complete intersection for such graphs. We also consider the Hankel edge ideal of trees with a natural labeling, called rooted labeling. We characterize such trees whose Hankel edge ideal is a complete intersection, and moreover, we determine those whose initial ideal with respect to the reverse lexicographic order satisfies this property.

The aim of this work is to use linear programming and polyhedral geometry to prove a duality formula for the ic-resurgence of edge ideals. We show that the ic-resurgence of the edge ideal $I$ of a clutter $\mathcal{C}$ and the ic-resurgence of the edge ideal $I^\vee$ of the blocker $\mathcal{C}^\vee$ of $\mathcal{C}$ coincide. If $\mathcal{C}$ is the clutter of bases of certain uniform matroids, we recover a formula for the resurgence of $I$, and if $\mathcal{C}$ is a connected non-bipartite graph with a perfect matching, we show a formula for the Waldschmidt constant of $I^\vee$.

In the present paper we study algebraic properties of edge ideals associated with plane curve arrangements via their Levi graphs. Using combinatorial properties of such Levi graphs we are able to describe those monomial algebras being Cohen-Macaulay, Buchsbaum, and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. We also condsider the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for these edge ideals. We provide effective lower and upper bounds on them. As a byproduct of our study we connect, in general, various Buchsbaum properties of squarefree modules.
The Principal Component of the Jets of a Graph
We define the s-order principal component of the jets of a graph and give a description of the primary decomposition of its edge ideal in terms of the minimal vertex covers of the base graph. As an application, we show the s-order principal component of the jets of a cochordal graph is cochordal, and connect this to Froberg's theorem on the linear resolution of edge ideals of cochordal graphs. An appendix is provided describing some computations of jets in the computer algebra system Macaulay2.
Powers of monomial ideals with characteristic-dependent Betti numbers

We explore the dependence of the Betti numbers of monomial ideals on the characteristic of the field. A first observation is that for a fixed prime $p$ either the $i$-th Betti number of all high enough powers of a monomial ideal differs in characteristic $0$ and in characteristic $p$ or it is the same for all high enough powers. In our main results we provide constructions and explicit examples of monomial ideals all of whose powers have some characteristic-dependent Betti numbers or whose asymptotic regularity depends on the field. We prove that, adding a monomial on new variables to a monomial ideal, allows to spread the characteristic dependence to all powers. For any given prime $p$, this produces an edge ideal such that the Betti numbers of all its powers over $\mathbb{Q}$ and over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ are different. Moreover, we show that, for every $r \geq 0$ and $i \geq 3$ there is a monomial ideal $I$ such that some coefficient in a degree $\geq r$ of the Kodiyalam polynomials $\mathfrak P_3(I),\ldots,\mathfrak P_{i+r}(I)$ depends on the characteristic. We also provide a summary of related results and speculate about the behaviour of other combinatorially defined ideals.

Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on the vertex set $V(G)$ and let $\text{ind-match}(G)$, $\text{min-match}(G)$ and $\text{match}(G)$ denote the induced matching number, the minimum matching number and the matching number of $G$, respectively. It is known that the inequalities $\text{ind-match}(G) \leq \text{min-match}(G) \leq \text{match}(G) \leq 2\text{min-match}(G)$ and $\text{match}(G) \leq \left\lfloor |V(G)|/2 \right\rfloor$ hold in general.
In the present paper, we determine the possible tuples $(p, q, r, n)$ with $\text{ind-match}(G) = p$, $\text{min-match}(G) = q$, $\text{match}(G) = r$ and $|V(G)| = n$ arising from connected simple graphs. As an application of this result, we also determine the possible tuples $(p', q, r, n)$ with ${\rm{reg}}(G) = p'$, $\text{min-match}(G) = q$, $\text{match}(G) = r$ and $|V(G)| = n$ arising from connected simple graphs, where $I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$ and ${\rm{reg}}(G) = {\rm{reg}}(K[V(G)]/I(G))$ is the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of the quotient ring $K[V(G)]/I(G)$.

We classify the Cohen-Macaulay generalized binomial edge ideals. Moreover we study the unmixedness and classify the bipartite and power cycle unmixed ones.

Let $G$ be a simple connected non-complete graph and $J_G$ be its binomial edge ideal in a polynomial ring $S$. Using certain invariants associated to graphs, say $U(G)$, Banerjee and Núñez-Betancourt gave an upper bound for the depth of $S/J_G$, and Rouzbahani Malayeri, Saeedi Madani and Kiani obtained a lower bound, say $L(G)$. Hibi and Saeedi Madani gave a structural classification of graphs satisfying $L(G)=U(G)$. In this article, we give structural classification of graphs satisfying $L(G)+1=U(G)$. We also compute the depth of $S/J_G$ for all such graphs $G$.

Let $I(G)$ be the edge ideal of a simple graph $G$ over a field k. We prove that $${\rm reg}(\overline {I(G)^s}) = {\rm reg}(I(G)^s),$$ for all $s \le 4$. Furthermore, we provide an example of a graph $G$ such that $${\rm reg} I(G)^s = {\rm reg} \overline{I(G)^s} = {\rm reg} I(G)^{(s)} = \begin{cases} 5 + 2s & \text{ if char k} = 2 \\ 4 + 2s & \text{ if char k} \neq 2, \end{cases}$$ for all $s \ge 1.$
The regularity of almost all edge ideals
A fruitful contemporary paradigm in graph theory is that almost all graphs that do not contain a certain subgraph have common structural characteristics. The "almost" is crucial, without it there is no structure. In this paper we transfer this paradigm to commutative algebra and make use of deep graph theoretic results. A key tool are the critical graphs introduced by Balogh and Butterfield.
We consider edge ideals $I_G$ of graphs and their Betti numbers. The numbers of the form $β_{i,2i+2}$ constitute the "main diagonal" of the Betti table. It is well known that any Betti number $β_{i,j}(I_G)$ below (or equivalently, to the left of) this diagonal is always zero. We identify a certain "parabola" inside the Betti table and call parabolic Betti numbers the entries of the Betti table bounded on the left by the main diagonal and on the right by this parabola. Let $β_{i,j}$ be a parabolic Betti number on the $r$-th row of the Betti table, for $r\ge3$. Our main results state that almost all graphs $G$ with $β_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ can be partitioned into $r-2$ cliques and one independent set, and in particular for almost all graphs $G$ with $β_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ the regularity of $I_G$ is $r-1$.
The line graph of a tree and its edge ideal
We describe all the trees with the property that the corresponding edge ideal of their line graph has a linear resolution. As a consequence, we give a complete characterization of those trees $T$ for which the line graph $L(T)$ is co-chordal. We also compute the second Betti number of the edge ideal of $L(T)$ and we determine the number of cycles in $\overline{L(T)}$. As a consequence, we obtain also the first Zagreb index of a graph. For edge ideals of line graphs of caterpillar graphs we determine the Krull dimension, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, and the projective dimension under some additional assumption on the degrees of the cutpoints.
Stability of Associated Primes and Depth of Integral Closures of Powers of Edge Ideals

We describe the simplicial complex $Δ$ such that the initial ideal of $J_G$ is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of $Δ$. By $Δ$ we show that if $J_G$ is $(S_2)$ then $G$ is accessible. We also characterize all accessible blocks with whiskers of cycle rank 3 and we define a new infinite class of accessible blocks with whiskers for any cycle rank. Finally, by using a computational approach, we show that the graphs with at most 12 vertices whose binomial edge ideal is Cohen-Macaulay are all and only the accessible ones.

The aims of this work are to study Rees algebras of filtrations of monomial ideals associated to covering polyhedra of rational matrices with non-negative entries and non-zero columns using combinatorial optimization and integer programming, and to study powers of monomial ideals and their integral closures using irreducible decompositions and polyhedral geometry. We study the Waldschmidt constant and the ic-resurgence of the filtration associated to a covering polyhedron and show how to compute these constants using linear programming. Then we show a lower bound for the ic-resurgence of the ideal of covers of a graph and prove that the lower bound is attained when the graph is perfect. We also show lower bounds for the ic-resurgence of the edge ideal of a graph and give an algorithm to compute the asymptotic resurgence of squarefree monomial ideals. A classification of when Newton's polyhedron is the irreducible polyhedron is presented using integral closure.
