A combinatorial approach to nonlinear spectral gaps
A seminal open question of Pisier and Mendel--Naor asks whether every degree-regular graph which satisfies the classical discrete Poincaré inequality for scalar functions, also satisfies an analogous inequality for functions taking values in \textit{any} normed space with non-trivial cotype. Motivated by applications, it is also greatly important to quantify the dependence of the corresponding optimal Poincaré constant on the cotype $q$. Works of Odell--Schlumprecht (1994), Ozawa (2004), and Naor (2014) make substantial progress on the former question by providing a positive answer for normed spaces which also have an unconditional basis, in addition to finite cotype. However, little is known in the way of quantitative estimates: the mentioned results imply a bound on the Poincaré constant depending super-exponentially on $q$.
We introduce a novel combinatorial framework for proving quantitative nonlinear spectral gap estimates. The centerpiece is a property of regular graphs that we call \emph{long range expansion}, which holds with high probability for random regular graphs. Our main result is that any regular graph with the long-range expansion property satisfies a discrete Poincaré inequality for any normed space with an unconditional basis and cotype $q$, with a Poincaré constant that depends \emph{polynomially} on $q$, which is optimal. As an application, any normed space with an unconditional basis which admits a low distortion embedding of an $n$-vertex random regular graph, must have cotype at least polylogarithmic in $n$. This extends a celebrated lower-bound of Matoušek for low distortion embeddings of random graphs into $\ell_q$ spaces.
On sharp isoperimetric inequalities on the hypercube

We prove the sharp isoperimetric inequality $$ \mathbb{E} \,h_{A}^{\log_{2}(3/2)} \geq μ(A)^{*} (\log_{2}(1/μ(A)^{*}))^{\log_{2}(3/2)} $$ for all sets $A \subseteq \{0,1\}^n$, where $μ$ denotes the uniform probability measure, $μ(A)^{*}=\min\{μ(A), 1-μ(A)\}$, $h_A$ is supported on $A$ and to each vertex $x$ assigns the number of neighbour vertices in the complement of $A$. The inequality becomes equality for any subcube. Moreover, we provide lower bounds on $\mathbb{E} h_{A}^β$ in terms of $μ(A)$ for all $β\in [1/2,1]$, improving, and in some cases tightening, previously known results. In particular, we obtain the sharp inequality $\mathbb{E}h_{A}^{0.53}\geq 2 μ(A)(1-μ(A))$ for all sets with $μ(A)\geq 1/2$, which allows us to refine a recent result of Kahn and Park on isoperimetric inequalities about partitioning the hypercube. Furthermore, we derive Talagrand's isoperimetric inequalities for functions with values in a Banach space having finite cotype: for all $f :\{-1,1\}^{n} \to X$, $\|f\|_{\infty}\leq 1$, and any $p \in [1,2]$ we have
$$
\|Df\|_{p} \gtrsim \frac{1}{q^{3/2}C_{q}(X)} \|f\|_{2}^{2/p}\left(\log \frac{e\|f\|_{2}}{\|f\|_{1}}\right)^{1/q},
$$
where $\| Df\|_{p}^{p} = \mathbb{E} \| \sum_{1\leq j \leq n} x'_{j} D_{j} f(x)\|^{p}$, $x'$ is independent copy of $x$, and $C_{q}(X)$ is the cotype $q$ constant of $X$. Different proofs of the recently resolved Talagrand's conjecture will be presented.
Root polytopes, tropical types, and toric edge ideals

We consider arrangements of tropical hyperplanes where the apices of the hyperplanes are taken to infinity in certain directions. Such an arrangement defines a decomposition of Euclidean space where a cell is determined by its `type' data, analogous to the covectors of an oriented matroid. By work of Develin-Sturmfels and Fink-Rincón, these `tropical complexes' are dual to (regular) subdivisions of root polytopes, which in turn are in bijection with mixed subdivisions of certain generalized permutohedra. Extending previous work with Joswig-Sanyal, we show how a natural monomial labeling of these complexes describes polynomial relations (syzygies) among `type ideals' which arise naturally from the combinatorial data of the arrangement. In particular, we show that the cotype ideal is Alexander dual to a corresponding initial ideal of the lattice ideal of the underlying root polytope. This leads to novel ways of studying algebraic properties of various monomial and toric ideals, as well as relating them to combinatorial and geometric properties. In particular, our methods of studying the dimension of the tropical complex leads to new formulas for homological invariants of toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs, which have been extensively studied in the commutative algebra community.
The cotype zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$
We give an asymptotic formula for the number of sublattices $Λ\subseteq \mathbb{Z}^d$ of index at most $X$ for which $\mathbb{Z}^d/Λ$ has rank at most $m$, answering a question of Nguyen and Shparlinski. We compare this result to recent work of Stanley and Wang on Smith Normal Forms of random integral matrices and discuss connections to the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics. Our arguments are based on Petrogradsky's formulas for the cotype zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$, a multivariable generalization of the subgroup growth zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$.
