Toric Promotion with Reflections and Refractions

Inspired by recent work on refraction billiards in dynamics, we introduce a notion of refraction for combinatorial billiards. This allows us to define a generalization of toric promotion that we call toric promotion with reflections and refractions, which is a dynamical system defined via a graph $G$ whose edges are partitioned into a set of reflection edges and a set of refraction edges. This system is a discretization of a billiards system in which a beam of light can pass through, reflect off of, or refract through each toric hyperplane in a toric arrangement. Vastly generalizing the main theorem known about toric promotion, we give a simple formula for the orbit structure of toric promotion with reflections and refractions when $G$ is a forest. We also completely describe the orbit sizes when $G$ is a cycle with an even number of refraction edges; this result is new even for ordinary toric promotion (i.e., when there are no refraction edges). When $G$ is a cycle of even size with no reflection edges, we obtain an interesting instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon.
Cyclic sieving on permutations -- an analysis of maps and statistics in the FindStat database

We perform a systematic study of permutation statistics and bijective maps on permutations using SageMath to search the FindStat combinatorial statistics database to identify apparent instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP). Cyclic sieving occurs on a set of objects, a statistic, and a map of order $n$ when the evaluation of the statistic generating function at the $d$th power of the primitive $n$th root of unity equals the number of fixed points under the $d$th power of the map. Of the apparent instances found in our experiment, we prove 34 new instances of the CSP and conjecture three more. Our results are organized largely by orbit structure, proving instances of the CSP for involutions with $2^{n-1}$ fixed points and $2^{\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor}$ fixed points, as well as maps whose orbits all have the same size. The FindStat maps which exhibit the CSP include a map constructed by Corteel (using a bijection of Foata and Zeilberger) to swap the number of nestings and crossings, the invert Laguerre heap map, a map of Alexandersson and Kebede designed to preserve right-to-left minima, conjugation by the long cycle, as well as reverse, complement, rotation, Lehmer code rotation, and toric promotion. Our results combined with those of [Elder, Lafrenière, McNicholas, Striker, Welch 2023] show that, contrary to common expectations, actions that exhibit homomesy are not necessarily the best candidates for the CSP, and vice versa.
Rotation invariant webs for three row flamingo Specht modules
We introduce a new rotation-invariant web basis for a family of Specht modules $S^{(d^3, 1^{n-3d})}$, indexed by normal plabic graphs satisfying a degree condition and resembling $A_2$ webs. We show that the $\mathfrak{S}_n$ action on our basis can be understood combinatorially via a set of skein relations. From this basis, we obtain a cyclic sieving result for a $q$-analog of the hook length formula for $λ$. Our construction extends the jellyfish invariants of Fraser, Patrias, Pechenik, and Striker and is closely related to the weblike subgraphs of Lam.
Cyclic sieving on noncrossing (1,2)-configurations

Verifying a suspicion of Propp and Reiner concerning the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP), M. Thiel introduced a Catalan object called noncrossing $(1,2)$-configurations (denoted by $X_n$), which is a class of set partitions of $[n-1]$. More precisely, Thiel proved that, with a natural action of the cyclic group $C_{n-1}$ on $X_n$, the triple $\left(X_n,C_{n-1},\text{Cat}_n(q)\right)$ exhibits the CSP, where $\text{Cat}_n(q):=\frac{1}{[n+1]_q}\begin{bmatrix}
2n\\ n
\end{bmatrix}_q$ is MacMahon's $q$-Catalan number. Recently, in a study of the fermionic diagonal coinvariant ring $FDR_n$, J. Kim found a combinatorial basis for $FDR_n$ indexed by $X_n$. In this paper, we continue to study $X_n$ and obtain the following results:
(1) We define a statistic $cwt$ on $X_n$ whose generating function is $\text{Cat}_n(q)$, which answers a problem of Thiel.
(2) We show that $\text{Cat}_n(q)$ is equivalent to $$\sum_{\substack{k,x,y\\2k+x+y=n-1}}\begin{bmatrix}
n-1
2k,x,y
\end{bmatrix}_q\text{Cat}_k
(q)q^{k+\binom{x}{2}+\binom{y}{2}+\binom{n}{2}}$$
modulo $q^{n-1}-1$, which answers a problem of Kim. As mentioned by Kim, this result leads to a representation theoretic proof of the above cyclic sieving result of Thiel.
(3) We consider the dihedral sieving, a generalization of the CSP, which was recently introduced by Rao and Suk. Under a natural action of the dihedral group $I_2(n-1)$ (for even $n$), we prove a dihedral sieving result on $X_n$.
Permutoric Promotion: Gliding Globs, Sliding Stones, and Colliding Coins

The first author recently introduced toric promotion, an operator that acts on the labelings of a graph $G$ and serves as a cyclic analogue of Schützenberger's promotion operator. Toric promotion is defined as the composition of certain toggle operators, listed in a natural cyclic order. We consider more general permutoric promotion operators, which are defined as compositions of the same toggles, but in permuted orders. We settle a conjecture of the first author by determining the orders of all permutoric promotion operators when $G$ is a path graph. In fact, we completely characterize the orbit structures of these operators, showing that they satisfy the cyclic sieving phenomenon. The first half of our proof requires us to introduce and analyze new broken promotion operators, which can be interpreted via globs of liquid gliding on a path graph. For the latter half of our proof, we reformulate the dynamics of permutoric promotion via stones sliding along a cycle graph and coins colliding with each other on a path graph.
Counting orbits under Kreweras complementation
The Kreweras complementation map is an anti-isomorphism on the lattice of noncrossing partitions. We consider an analogous operation for plane trees motivated by the molecular biology problem of RNA folding. In this context, we explicitly count the orbits of Kreweras' map according to their length as the number of appropriate symmetry classes of trees in the plane. These enumeration results are consolidated into a single implicit formula under the cyclic sieving phenomenon.

We give a cyclic sieving phenomenon for symplectic $λ$-tableaux $SP(λ,2m)$, where $λ$ is a partition of an odd integer $n$ and $gcd(m,p)=1$ for any odd prime $p\leq n$. We use the crystal structure on Kashiwara-Nakashima symplectic tableaux to get a cyclic sieving action as the product $σ$ of simple reflections in the Weyl group. The cyclic sieving polynomial is the $q$-anologue of the hook-content formula for symplectic tableaux. More generally, we give a CSP for symplectic skew tableaux with analogous conditions on the shape and a cyclic group action that rotates tableaux weights in a way motivated by the $σ$-action.
Cyclic Sieving for a Family of Semistandard Tableaux
We give a new cyclic sieving phenomenon for semistandard Young tableaux $SSYT(λ,μ)$ of shape $λ=(m,n^b)$ and content $μ$, a $(b+2)$-tuple. We prove that $(SSYT(λ,μ),\langle \partial^{b+2} \rangle, f(q))$ exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon, where $\partial$ is the jeu de taquin promotion operator and $f(q)$ is a modified Kostka-Foulkes polynomial $\widetilde{K}_{λ,μ}(q)$, up to a power of $q$.
Promotion and growth diagrams for fans of Dyck paths and vacillating tableaux

We construct an injection from the set of $r$-fans of Dyck paths (resp. vacillating tableaux) of length $n$ into the set of chord diagrams on $[n]$ that intertwines promotion and rotation. This is done in two different ways, namely as fillings of promotion-evacuation diagrams and in terms of Fomin growth diagrams. Our analysis uses the fact that $r$-fans of Dyck paths and vacillating tableaux can be viewed as highest weight elements of weight zero in crystals of type $B_r$ and $C_r$, respectively, which in turn can be analyzed using virtual crystals. On the level of Fomin growth diagrams, the virtualization process corresponds to the Roby-Krattenthaler blow up construction. One of the motivations for finding rotation invariant diagrammatic bases such as chord diagrams is the cyclic sieving phenomenon. Indeed, we give a cyclic sieving phenomenon on $r$-fans of Dyck paths and vacillating tableaux using the promotion action.
Universal characters twisted by roots of unity

A classical result of Littlewood gives a factorisation for the Schur function at a set of variables "twisted" by a primitive $t$-th root of unity, characterised by the core and quotient of the indexing partition. While somewhat neglected, it has proved to be an important tool in the character theory of the symmetric group, the cyclic sieving phenomenon, plethysms of symmetric functions and more. Recently, similar factorisations for the characters of the groups $\mathrm{O}(2n,\mathbb{C})$, $\mathrm{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{C})$ and $\mathrm{SO}(2n+1,\mathbb{C})$ were obtained by Ayyer and Kumari. We lift these results to the level of universal characters, which has the benefit of making the proofs simpler and the structure of the factorisations more transparent. Our approach also allows for universal character extensions of some factorisations of a different nature originally discovered by Ciucu and Krattenthaler, and generalised by Ayyer and Behrend.
Skew hook Schur functions and the cyclic sieving phenomenon
Fix an integer $t \geq 2$ and a primitive $t^{\text{th}}$ root of unity $ω$. We consider the specialized skew hook Schur polynomial $\text{hs}_{λ/μ}(X,ωX,\dots,ω^{t-1}X/Y,ωY,\dots,ω^{t-1}Y)$, where $ω^k X=(ω^k x_1, \dots, ω^k x_n)$, $ω^k Y=(ω^k y_1, \dots, ω^k y_m)$ for $0 \leq k \leq t-1$. We characterize the skew shapes $λ/μ$ for which the polynomial vanishes and prove that the nonzero polynomial factorizes into smaller skew hook Schur polynomials. Then we give a combinatorial interpretation of $\text{hs}_{λ/μ}(1,ω^d,\dots,ω^{d(tn-1)}/1,ω^d,\dots,ω^{d(tm-1)})$, for all divisors $d$ of $t$, in terms of ribbon supertableaux. Lastly, we use the combinatorial interpretation to prove the cyclic sieving phenomenon on the set of semistandard supertableaux of shape $λ/μ$ for odd $t$. Using a similar proof strategy, we give a complete generalization of a result of Lee--Oh (arXiv: 2112.12394, 2021) for the cyclic sieving phenomenon on the set of skew SSYT conjectured by Alexandersson--Pfannerer--Rubey--Uhlin (Forum Math. Sigma, 2021).
Rowmotion on $m$-Tamari and BiCambrian Lattices

Thomas and Williams conjectured that rowmotion acting on the rational $(a,b)$-Tamari lattice has order $a+b-1$. We construct an equivariant bijection that proves this conjecture when $b\equiv 1\pmod a$; in fact, we determine the entire orbit structure of rowmotion in this case, showing that it exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon. We additionally show that the down-degree statistic is homomesic for this action. In a different vein, we consider the action of rowmotion on Barnard and Reading's biCambrian lattices. Settling a different conjecture of Thomas and Williams, we prove that if $c$ is a bipartite Coxeter element of a coincidental-type Coxeter group $W$, then the orbit structure of rowmotion on the $c$-biCambrian lattice is the same as the orbit structure of rowmotion on the lattice of order ideals of the doubled root poset of type $W$.

Let $k$ and $m$ be positive integers and $λ/μ$ a skew partition. We compute the principal specialization of the skew Schur polynomials $s_{λ/μ}(x_1, \ldots, x_{k})$ modulo $q^m-1$ under suitable conditions. We interpret the results thus obtained from the viewpoint of the cyclic sieving phenomenon on semistandard Young skew tableaux of shape $λ/μ$. As an application, we deal with evaluations of the principal specialization of the skew Schur polynomials at roots of unity.
Curious cyclic sieving on increasing tableaux

We prove a cyclic sieving result for the set of $3 \times k$ packed increasing tableaux with maximum entry $m :=3+k$ under K-promotion. The "curiosity" is that the sieving polynomial arises from the $q$-hook formula for standard tableaux of "toothbrush shape" $(2^3, 1^{k-2})$ with $m+1$ boxes, whereas K-promotion here only has order $m$.
Macdonald polynomials and cyclic sieving

The Garsia--Haiman module is a bigraded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module whose Frobenius image is a Macdonald polynomial. The method of orbit harmonics promotes an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-set $X$ to a graded polynomial ring. The orbit harmonics can be applied to prove cyclic sieving phenomena which is a notion that encapsulates the fixed-point structure of finite cyclic group action on a finite set. By applying this idea to the Garsia--Haiman module, we provide cyclic sieving results regarding the enumeration of matrices that are invariant under certain cyclic row and column rotation and translation of entries.
$P$-strict promotion and $B$-bounded rowmotion, with applications to tableaux of many flavors

We define P-strict labelings for a finite poset P as a generalization of semistandard Young tableaux and show that promotion on these objects is in equivariant bijection with a toggle action on B-bounded Q-partitions of an associated poset Q. In many nice cases, this toggle action is conjugate to rowmotion. We apply this result to flagged tableaux, Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, and symplectic tableaux, obtaining new cyclic sieving and homomesy conjectures. We also show P-strict promotion can be equivalently defined using Bender-Knuth and jeu de taquin perspectives.
$q$-Kreweras numbers for coincidental Coxeter groups attached to limit symbols
For a coincidental Coxeter group, i.e. of type $A_{n-1}, BC_n, H_3,$ or $I_2(m)$, we define the corresponding $q$-Kreweras numbers attached to limit symbols in the sense of Shoji. The construction of these numbers resembles the argument of Reiner and Sommers and these two share similar properties, but our version is slightly different from and combinatorially simpler than theirs. We also study the combinatorial properties of our $q$-Kreweras numbers, i.e. positivity, relation with $q$-Narayana numbers, and cyclic sieving phenomenon.

The cyclic sieving phenomenon of Reiner, Stanton, and White characterizes the stabilizers of cyclic group actions on finite sets using q-analogue polynomials. Eu and Fu demonstrated a cyclic sieving phenomenon on generalized cluster complexes of every type using the q-Catalan numbers. In this paper, we exhibit the dihedral sieving phenomenon, introduced for odd n by Rao and Suk, on clusters of every type. In the type A case, we show that the Raney numbers count both reflection-symmetric k-angulations of an n-gon and a particular evaluation of the (q,t)-Fuss--Catalan numbers. We also introduce a sieving phenomenon for the symmetric group, and discuss possibilities for dihedral sieving for even n.
Promotion and Cyclic Sieving on Rectangular $δ$-Semistandard Tableaux
Let $δ=(δ_1,\ldots,δ_n)$ be a string of letters $h$ and $v$. We define a Young tableau to be $δ$-semistandard if the entries are weakly increasing along rows and columns, and the entries $i$ form a horizontal strip if $δ_i=h$ and a vertical strip if $δ_i=v$. We define $δ$-promotion on such tableaux via a modified jeu-de-taquin. The first main result is that $δ$-promotion has period $n$ on rectangular $δ$-semistandard tableaux, generalizing the results of Haiman and Rhoades for standard and semistandard tableaux. The second main result states that the set of rectangular $δ$-semistandard tableaux for fixed $δ$ and content $γ$ exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon with the generalized Kostka polynomial. To do so we follow Fontaine-Kamnitzer and associate to $(δ,γ)$ an $SL_m$-invariant space Inv$(V_{λ^1}\otimes\cdots\otimes V_{λ^n})$ where each $V_{λ^i}$ is an alternating or symmetric representation. We show that the Satake basis of the corresponding invariant space is indexed by the set of tableaux corresponding to $(δ,γ)$ and is permuted by rotation of tensor factors. We then diagonalize the rotation action using the fusion product. This cyclic sieving generalizes the result of Rhoades, and of Fontaine-Kamnitzer (in type A), and is closely related to that of Westbury.

We prove several new instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) on Catalan objects of type A and type B. Moreover, we refine many of the known instances of the CSP on Catalan objects. For example, we consider triangulations refined by the number of "ears", non-crossing matchings with a fixed number of short edges, and non-crossing configurations with a fixed number of loops and edges.
