Birational rowmotion is an action on the space of assignments of rational functions to the elements of a finite partially-ordered set (poset). It is lifted from the well-studied rowmotion map on order ideals (equivariantly on antichains) of a poset $P$, which when iterated on special posets, has unexpectedly nice properties in terms of periodicity, cyclic sieving, and homomesy (statistics whose averages over each orbit are constant) [AST11, BW74, CF95, Pan09, PR13, RuSh12,RuWa15+,SW12, ThWi17, Yil17. In this context, rowmotion appears to be related to Auslander-Reiten translation on certain quivers, and birational rowmotion to $Y$-systems of type $A_m \times A_n$ described in Zamolodchikov periodicity.
We give a formula in terms of families of non-intersecting lattice paths for iterated actions of the birational rowmotion map on a product of two chains. This allows us to give a much simpler direct proof of the key fact that the period of this map on a product of chains of lengths $r$ and $s$ is $r+s+2$ (first proved by D.~Grinberg and the second author), as well as the first proof of the birational analogue of homomesy along files for such posets.

For each minuscule flag variety $X$, there is a corresponding minuscule poset, describing its Schubert decomposition. We study an action on plane partitions over such posets, introduced by P. Cameron and D. Fon-der-Flaass (1995). For plane partitions of height at most $2$, D. Rush and X. Shi (2013) proved an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon, completely describing the orbit structure of this action. They noted their result does not extend to greater heights in general; however, when $X$ is one of the two minuscule flag varieties of exceptional Lie type $E$, they conjectured explicit instances of cyclic sieving for all heights.
We prove their conjecture in the case that $X$ is the Cayley-Moufang plane of type $E_6$. For the other exceptional minuscule flag variety, the Freudenthal variety of type $E_7$, we establish their conjecture for heights at most $4$, but show that it fails generally. We further give a new proof of an unpublished cyclic sieving of D. Rush and X. Shi (2011) for plane partitions of any height in the case $X$ is an even-dimensional quadric hypersurface. Our argument uses ideas of K. Dilks, O. Pechenik, and J. Striker (2017) to relate the action on plane partitions to combinatorics derived from $K$-theoretic Schubert calculus.
Cyclic Sieving of Matchings
The cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) was introduced by Reiner, Stanton, and White to study combinatorial structures with actions of cyclic groups. The crucial step is to find a polynomial, for example a q-analog, that satisfies the CSP conditions for an action. This polynomial will give us a lot of information about the symmetry and structure of the set under the action. In this paper, we study the cyclic sieving phenomenon of the cyclic group $C_{2n}$ acting on $P_{n,k}$, which is the set of matchings of $2n$ points on a circle with $k$ crossings. The noncrossing matchings ($k=0$) was recently studied as a Catalan object. In this paper, we study more general cases, the matchings with more number of crossings. We prove that there exists $q$-analog polynomials $f_{n,k}(q)$ such that $(P_{n,k},f_{n,k},C_{2n})$ exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon for $k=1,2,3$. In the proof, we also introduce an efficient representation of the elements in $P_{n,k}$, which helps us to understand the symmetrical structure of the set.
Dihedral Sieving Phenomena

Cyclic sieving is a well-known phenomenon where certain interesting polynomials, especially $q$-analogues, have useful interpretations related to actions and representations of the cyclic group. We propose a definition of sieving for an arbitrary group $G$ and study it for the dihedral group $I_2(n)$ of order $2n$. This requires understanding the generators of the representation ring of the dihedral group. For $n$ odd, we exhibit several instances of dihedral sieving which involve the generalized Fibonomial coefficients, recently studied by Amdeberhan, Chen, Moll, and Sagan. We also exhibit an instance of dihedral sieving involving Garsia and Haiman's $(q,t)$-Catalan numbers.

Reiner-Stanton-White defined the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) associated to a finite cyclic group action and a polynomial. A key example arises from the length generating function for minimal length coset representatives of a parabolic quotient of a finite Coxeter group. In type A, this result can be phrased in terms of the natural cyclic action on words of fixed content.
There is a natural notion of refinement for many CSP's. We formulate and prove a refinement, with respect to the major index statistic, of this CSP on words of fixed content by also fixing the cyclic descent type. The argument presented is completely different from Reiner-Stanton-White's representation-theoretic approach. It is combinatorial and largely, though not entirely, bijective in a sense we make precise with a "universal" sieving statistic on words, "flex".
A building block of our argument involves cyclic sieving for shifted subset sums, which also appeared in Reiner-Stanton-White. We give an alternate, largely bijective proof of a refinement of this result by extending some ideas of Wagon-Wilf.

For coprime positive integers $a<b$, Armstrong, Rhoades, and Williams (2013) defined a set $NC(a,b)$ of rational noncrossing partitions, a subset of the ordinary noncrossing partitions of $\{1, \ldots, b-1\}$. Bodnar and Rhoades (2015) confirmed their conjecture that $NC(a,b)$ is closed under rotation and proved an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon for this rotation action. We give a definition of $NC(a,b)$ which works for all coprime $a$ and $b$ and prove closure under rotation and cyclic sieving in this more general setting. We also generalize noncrossing parking functions to all coprime $a$ and $b$, and provide a character formula for the action of $\mathfrak{S}_a \times \mathbb{Z}_{b-1}$ on $\mathsf{Park}^{NC}(a,b)$.

This paper explores the orbit structure and homomesy (constant averages over orbits) properties of certain actions of toggle groups on the collection of independent sets of a path graph. In particular we prove a generalization of a homomesy conjecture of Propp that for the action of a "Coxeter element" of vertex toggles, the difference of indicator functions of symmetrically-located vertices is 0-mesic. Then we use our analysis to show facts about orbit sizes that are easy to conjecture but nontrivial to prove. Besides its intrinsic interest, this particular combinatorial dynamical system is valuable in providing an interesting example of (a) homomesy in a context where large orbit sizes make a cyclic sieving phenomenon unlikely to exist, (b) the use of Coxeter theory to greatly generalize the set of actions for which results hold, and (c) the usefulness of Striker's notion of generalized toggle groups.

The paper concerns a definition for $q$-Kreweras numbers for finite Weyl groups $W$, refining the $q$-Catalan numbers for $W$, and arising from work of the second author. We give explicit formulas in all types for the $q$-Kreweras numbers. In the classical types $A, B, C$, we also record formulas for the $q$-Narayana numbers and in the process show that the formulas depend only on the Weyl group (that is, they coincide in types $B$ and $C$). In addition we verify that in the classical types $A,B,C,D$ that the $q$-Kreweras numbers obey the expected cyclic sieving phenomena when evaluated at appropriate roots of unity.

Based on computational experiments, Jim Propp and Vic Reiner suspected that there might exist a sequence of combinatorial objects $X_n$, each carrying a natural action of the cyclic group $C_{n-1}$ of order $n-1$ such that the triple $\left(X_n,C_{n-1},\frac{1}{[n+1]_q}{2n \brack n}_q\right)$ exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon. We prove their suspicion right.

Let $a < b$ be coprime positive integers. Armstrong, Rhoades, and Williams defined a set $\mathsf{NC}(a,b)$ of `rational noncrossing partitions', which form a subset of the ordinary noncrossing partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, b-1\}$. Confirming a conjecture of Armstrong et. al., we prove that $\mathsf{NC}(a,b)$ is closed under rotation and prove an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon for this rotational action. We also define a rational generalization of the $\mathfrak{S}_a$-noncrossing parking functions of Armstrong, Reiner, and Rhoades.
Combinatorics of symplectic invariant tensors

An important problem from invariant theory is to describe the subspace of a tensor power of a representation invariant under the action of the group. According to Weyl's classic, the first main (later: 'fundamental') theorem of invariant theory states that all invariants are expressible in terms of a finite number among them, whereas a second main theorem determines the relations between those basic invariants.
Here we present a transparent, combinatorial proof of a second fundamental theorem for the defining representation of the symplectic group Sp(2n). Our formulation is completely explicit and provides a very precise link to (n+1)-noncrossing perfect matchings, going beyond a dimension count. As a corollary, we obtain an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon.

We introduce and study a new action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the vector space spanned by noncrossing partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ in which the adjacent transpositions $(i, i+1) \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ act on noncrossing partitions by means of skein relations. We characterize the isomorphism type of the resulting module and use it to obtain new representation theoretic proofs of cyclic sieving results due to Reiner-Stanton-White and Pechenik for the action of rotation on various classes of noncrossing partitions and the action of K-promotion on two-row rectangular increasing tableaux. Our skein relations generalize the Kauffman bracket (or Ptolemy relation) and can be used to resolve any set partition as a linear combination of noncrossing partitions in a $\mathfrak{S}_n$-equivariant way.

We give a counting formula for the set of rectangular increasing tableaux in terms of generalized Narayana numbers. We define small $m$-Schröder paths and give a bijection between the set of increasing rectangular tableaux and small $m$-Schröder paths, generalizing a result of Pechenik [3]. Using $K$-jeu de taquin promotion, which was defined by Thomas and Yong [10], we give a cyclic sieving phenomenon for the set of increasing hook tableaux.
Cyclic Sieving and Plethysm Coefficients

A combinatorial expression for the coefficient of the Schur function $s_λ$ in the expansion of the plethysm $p_{n/d}^d \circ s_μ$ is given for all $d$ dividing $n$ for the cases in which $n=2$ or $λ$ is rectangular. In these cases, the coefficient $\langle p_{n/d}^d \circ s_μ, s_λ \rangle$ is shown to count, up to sign, the number of fixed points of an $\langle s_μ^n, s_λ \rangle$-element set under the $d^{\text{th}}$ power of an order-$n$ cyclic action. If $n=2$, the action is the Schützenberger involution on semistandard Young tableaux (also known as evacuation), and, if $λ$ is rectangular, the action is a certain power of Schützenberger and Shimozono's jeu-de-taquin promotion.
This work extends results of Stembridge and Rhoades linking fixed points of the Schützenberger actions to ribbon tableaux enumeration. The conclusion for the case $n=2$ is equivalent to the domino tableaux rule of Carré and Leclerc for discriminating between the symmetric and antisymmetric parts of the square of a Schur function.
A combinatorial approach to classical representation theory
A fundamental problem from invariant theory is to describe the endomorphism algebra of multilinear functions on a representation V invariant under the action of a group G. According to Weyl's classic, a first main (later: fundamental) theorem of invariant theory provides a finite spanning set for this algebra, whereas a a second main theorem describes the linear relations between those basic invariants.
We use diagrammatic methods to carry Weyl's programme a step further, providing explicit bases for the subspace of the r-th tensor powers of V invariant under the action of G, that are additionally preserved by the action of the long cycle of the symmetric group on r letters. The representations we study are essentially those that occur in Weyl's book: the defining representations of the symplectic groups, the defining representations of the symmetric groups considered as linear representations, and the adjoint representations of the linear groups.
In particular, we present a transparent, combinatorial proof of a second fundamental theorem for the defining representation of the symplectic groups Sp(2n). Our formulation is explicit and provides a very precise link to (n+1)-noncrossing perfect matchings, going beyond a dimension count. Extending our argument to the k-th symmetric powers of these representations, the combinatorial objects involved turn out to be (n+1)-noncrossing k-regular graphs. As corollaries we obtain instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon for these objects and the natural rotation action.
In general, we derive branching rules for the diagram algebras corresponding to the representations in a uniform way. We also compute the Frobenius characteristics of modules of the diagram algebras restricted to the action of the symmetric group and obtain the isotypic decomposition of the r-th tensor power of V when n is large enough in comparison to r.
Long fully commutative elements in affine Coxeter groups
An element of a Coxeter group $W$ is called fully commutative if any two of its reduced decompositions can be related by a series of transpositions of adjacent commuting generators. In the preprint "Fully commutative elements in finite and affine Coxeter groups" (arXiv:1402.2166), R. Biagioli and the authors proved among other things that, for each irreducible affine Coxeter group, the sequence counting fully commutative elements with respect to length is ultimately periodic. In the present work, we study this sequence in its periodic part for each of these groups, and in particular we determine the minimal period. We also observe that in type $A$ affine we get an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon.

We apply the version of Pólya-Redfield theory obtained by White to count patterns with a given automorphism group to the enumeration of strong dichotomy patterns, that is, we count bicolor patterns of $\mathbb{Z}_{2k}$ with respect to the action of $\Aff(\mathbb{Z}_{2k})$ and with trivial isotropy group. As a byproduct, a conjectural instance of phenomenon similar to cyclic sieving for special cases of these combinatorial objects is proposed.
Results and conjectures on simultaneous core partitions

An n-core partition is an integer partition whose Young diagram contains no hook lengths equal to n. We consider partitions that are simultaneously a-core and b-core for two relatively prime integers a and b. These are related to abacus diagrams and the combinatorics of the affine symmetric group (type A). We observe that self-conjugate simultaneous core partitions correspond to the combinatorics of type C, and use abacus diagrams to unite the discussion of these two sets of objects.
In particular, we prove that (2n)- and (2mn+1)-core partitions correspond naturally to dominant alcoves in the m-Shi arrangement of type C_n, generalizing a result of Fishel--Vazirani for type A. We also introduce a major statistic on simultaneous n- and (n+1)-core partitions and on self-conjugate simultaneous (2n)- and (2n+1)-core partitions that yield q-analogues of the Coxeter-Catalan numbers of type A and type C.
We present related conjectures and open questions on the average size of a simultaneous core partition, q-analogs of generalized Catalan numbers, and generalizations to other Coxeter groups. We also discuss connections with the cyclic sieving phenomenon and q,t-Catalan numbers.

We study rotation of invariant vectors in tensor products of minuscule representations. We define a combinatorial notion of rotation of minuscule Littelmann paths. Using affine Grassmannians, we show that this rotation action is realized geometrically as rotation of components of the Satake fibre. As a consequence, we have a basis for invariant spaces which is permuted by rotation (up to global sign). Finally, we diagonalize the rotation operator by showing that its eigenspaces are given by intersection homology of quiver varieties. As a consequence, we generalize Rhoades' work on the cyclic sieving phenomenon.
Cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations
We show an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations with given cycle types. We define annular $q$-Kreweras numbers, annular $q$-Narayana numbers, and annular $q$-Catalan number, all of which are polynomials in $q$. We then show that these polynomials exhibit the cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations. We also show that a sum of annular $q$-Kreweras numbers becomes an annular $q$-Narayana number and a sum of $q$-Narayana numbers becomes an annular $q$-Catalan number.
