Algorithmic Pirogov-Sinai theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop an efficient algorithmic approach for approximate counting and sampling in the low-temperature regime of a broad class of statistical physics models on finite subsets of the lattice $\mathbb Z^d$ and on the torus $(\mathbb Z/n \mathbb Z)^d$. Our approach is based on combining contour representations from Pirogov-Sinai theory with Barvinok's approach to approximate counting using truncated Taylor series. Some consequences of our main results include an FPTAS for approximating the partition function of the hard-core model at sufficiently high fugacity on subsets of $\mathbb Z^d$ with appropriate boundary conditions and an efficient sampling algorithm for the ferromagnetic Potts model on the discrete torus $(\mathbb Z/n \mathbb Z)^d$ at sufficiently low temperature.

Critical Ising model on random triangulations of the disk: enumeration and local limits
Published in Commun. Math. Phys., 374(3):1577-1643, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We consider Boltzmann random triangulations coupled to the Ising model on their faces, under Dobrushin boundary conditions and at the critical point of the model. The first part of this paper computes explicitly the partition function of this model by solving its Tutte's equation, extending a previous result by Bernardi and Bousquet-Mélou to the model with Dobrushin boundary conditions. We show that the perimeter exponent of the model is 7/3 in contrast to the exponent 5/2 for uniform triangulations. In the second part, we show that the model has a local limit in distribution when the two components of the Dobrushin boundary tend to infinity one after the other. The local limit is constructed explicitly using the peeling process along an Ising interface. Moreover, we show that the main interface in the local limit touches the (infinite) boundary almost surely only finitely many times, a behavior opposite to that of the Bernoulli percolation on uniform maps. Some scaling limits closely related to the perimeters of finite clusters are also obtained.

Arctic curves for paths with arbitrary starting points: a tangent method approach
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 51 355201 (2018) • View Publication • BIB
We use the tangent method to investigate the arctic curve in a model of non-intersecting lattice paths with arbitrary fixed starting points aligned along some boundary and whose distribution is characterized by some arbitrary piecewise differentiable function. We find that the arctic curve has a simple explicit parametric representation depending of this function, providing us with a simple transform that maps the arbitrary boundary condition to the arctic curve location. We discuss generic starting point distributions as well as particular freezing ones which create additional frozen domains adjacent to the boundary, hence new portions for the arctic curve. A number of examples are presented, corresponding to both generic and freezing distributions.

The free-fermionic $C^{(1)}_2$ loop model, double dimers and Kashaev's recurrence
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A. Volume 158, August 2018, Pages 407-448 • View Publication • BIB
We study a two-color loop model known as the $C^{(1)}_2$ loop model. We define a free-fermionic regime for this model, and show that under this assumption it can be transformed into a double dimer model. We then compute its free energy on periodic planar graphs. We also study the star-triangle relation or Yang-Baxter equations of this model, and show that after a proper parametrization they can be summed up into a single relation known as Kashaev's relation. This is enough to identify the solution of Kashaev's relation as the partition function of a $C^{(1)}_2$ loop model with some boundary conditions, thus solving an open question of Kenyon and Pemantle about the combinatorics of Kashaev's relation.

The algebraic Bethe Ansatz and combinatorial trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present in this paper a comprehensive introduction to the algebraic Bethe Ansatz, taking as examples the six-vertex model with periodic and non-periodic boundary conditions. We propose a diagrammatic representation of the commutation relations used in the algebraic Bethe Ansatz, so that the action of the transfer matrix in the nth excited state gives place to labeled combinatorial trees. The analysis of these combinatorial trees provides in a straightforward way the eigenvalues and eigenstates of the transfer matrix, as well as the respective Bethe Ansatz equations. Several identities between the R-matrix elements can also be derived from the symmetry of these diagrams regarding the permutation of their labels. This combinatorial approach gives some insights about how the algebraic Bethe Ansatz works, which can be valuable for non-experts readers.
Stochastic six-vertex model in a half-quadrant and half-line open ASEP
Published in Duke Math. J. 167, no. 13 (2018), 2457-2529 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on the positive integers with an open boundary condition. We show that, when starting devoid of particles and for a certain boundary condition, the height function at the origin fluctuates asymptotically (in large time $τ$) according to the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution on the $τ^{1/3}$ scale. This is the first example of KPZ asymptotics for a half-space system outside the class of free-fermionic/determinantal/Pfaffian models. Our main tool in this analysis is a new class of probability measures on Young diagrams that we call half-space Macdonald processes, as well as two surprising relations. The first relates a special (Hall-Littlewood) case of these measures to the half-space stochastic six-vertex model (which further limits to ASEP) using a Yang-Baxter graphical argument. The second relates certain averages under these measures to their half-space (or Pfaffian) Schur process analogs via a refined Littlewood identity.

Dual wavefunction of the symplectic ice
Published in Reports on Mathematical Physics 80 (2017) 391-414 • View Publication • BIB
The wavefunction of the free-fermion six-vertex model was found to give a natural realization of the Tokuyama combinatorial formula for the Schur polynomials by Bump-Brubaker-Friedberg. Recently, we studied the correspondence between the dual version of the wavefunction and the Schur polynomials, which gave rise to another combinatorial formula. In this paper, we extend the analysis to the reflecting boundary condition, and show the exact correspondence between the dual wavefunction and the symplectic Schur functions. This gives a dual version of the integrable model realization of the symplectic Schur functions by Ivanov. We also generalize to the correspondence between the wavefunction, the dual wavefunction of the six-vertex model and the factorial symplectic Schur functions by the inhomogeneous generalization of the model.

Sequences of Integers with Three Missing Separations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fix a set $D$ of positive integers. We study the maximum density $μ(D)$ of sequences of integers in which the separation between any two terms does not fall in $D$. The $D$-sets considered in this article are of the form $\{1,j,k\}$. The closely related function $κ(D)$, the parameter involved in the "lonely runner conjecture," is also investigated. Exact values of $κ(D)$ and $μ(D)$ are found for some families of $D=\{1,j,k\}$. We prove that the boundary conditions in two earlier results of Haralambis are sharp. Consequently, our results declaim two conjectures posted recently, and extend some results by Gupta.
Phase Coexistence for the Hard-Core Model on ${\mathbb Z}^2$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The hard-core model has attracted much attention across several disciplines, representing lattice gases in statistical physics and independent sets in discrete mathematics and computer science. On finite graphs, we are given a parameter $λ$, and an independent set $I$ arises with probability proportional to $λ^{|I|}$. On infinite graphs a Gibbs measure is defined as a suitable limit with the correct conditional probabilities, and we are interested in determining when this limit is unique and when there is phase coexistence, i.e., existence of multiple Gibbs measures. It has long been conjectured that on ${\mathbb Z}^2$ this model has a critical value $λ_c \approx 3.796$ with the property that if $λ< λ_c$ then it exhibits uniqueness of phase, while if $λ> λ_c$ then there is phase coexistence. Much of the work to date on this problem has focused on the regime of uniqueness, with the state of the art being recent work of Sinclair, Srivastava, Štefankovič and Yin showing that there is a unique Gibbs measure for all $λ< 2.538$. Here we give the first non-trivial result in the other direction, showing that there are multiple Gibbs measures for all $λ> 5.3506$. There is some potential for lowering this bound, but with the methods we are using we cannot hope to replace $5.3506$ with anything below about $4.8771$. Our proof begins along the lines of the standard Peierls argument, but we add two innovations. First, following ideas of Kotecký and Randall, we construct an event that distinguishes two boundary conditions and always has long contours associated with it, obviating the need to accurately enumerate short contours. Second, we obtain improved bounds on the number of contours by relating them to a new class of self-avoiding walks on an oriented version of ${\mathbb Z}^2$.

Stochastic higher spin six vertex model and q-TASEPs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present two new connections between the inhomogeneous stochastic higher spin six vertex model in a quadrant and integrable stochastic systems from the Macdonald processes hierarchy. First, we show how Macdonald $q$-difference operators with $t=0$ (an algebraic tool crucial for studying the corresponding Macdonald processes) can be utilized to get $q$-moments of the height function $\mathfrak{h}$ in the higher spin six vertex model first computed in arXiv:1601.05770 using Bethe ansatz. This result in particular implies that for the vertex model with the step Bernoulli boundary condition, the value of $\mathfrak{h}$ at an arbitrary point $(N+1,T)\in\mathbb{Z}_{\ge2}\times\mathbb{Z}_{\ge1}$ has the same distribution as the last component $λ_N$ of a random partition under a specific $t=0$ Macdonald measure. On the other hand, it is known that $\mathbf{x}_N:=λ_N-N$ can be identified with the location of the $N$th particle in a certain discrete time $q$-TASEP started from the step initial configuration. The second construction we present is a coupling of this $q$-TASEP and the higher spin six vertex model (with the step Bernoulli boundary condition) along time-like paths providing an independent probabilistic explanation of the equality of $\mathfrak{h}(N+1,T)$ and $\mathbf{x}_N+N$ in distribution. Combined with the identification of averages of observables between the stochastic higher spin six vertex model and Schur measures (which are $t=q$ Macdonald measures) obtained recently in arXiv:1608.01553, this produces GUE Tracy--Widom asymptotics for a discrete time $q$-TASEP with the step initial configuration and special jump parameters.

A $q$-Robinson-Schensted-Knuth Algorithm and a $q$-polymer
Published • View Publication • BIB
In [Matveev-Petrov 2016](arXiv:1504.00666) a $q$-deformed Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm ($q$RSK) was introduced. In this article we give reformulations of this algorithm in terms of the Noumi-Yamada description, growth diagrams and local moves. We show that the algorithm is symmetric, namely the output tableaux pairs are swapped in a sense of distribution when the input matrix is transposed. We also formulate a $q$-polymer model based on the $q$RSK, prove the corresponding Burke property, which we use to show a strong law of large numbers for the partition function given stationary boundary conditions and $q$-geometric weights. We use the $q$-local moves to define a generalisation of the $q$RSK taking a Young diagram-shape of array as the input. We write down the joint distribution of partition functions in the space-like direction of the $q$-polymer in $q$-geometric environment, formulate a $q$-version of the multilayer polynuclear growth model ($q$PNG) and write down the joint distribution of the $q$-polymer partition functions at a fixed time.

Neumann Cheeger constants on graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any subgraph of a graph, the Laplacian with Neumann boundary condition was introduced by Chung and Yau [CY94]. In this paper, motivated by the Riemannian case, we introduce the Cheeger constants for Neumann problems and prove corresponding Cheeger estimates for first nontrivial eigenvalues.
Punctures for Theories of Class $\mathcal{S}_Γ$
Published • View Publication • BIB
With the aim of understanding compactifications of 6D superconformal field theories to four dimensions, we study punctures for theories of class $\mathcal{S}_Γ$. The class $\mathcal{S}_Γ$ theories arise from M5-branes probing $\mathbb{C}^2 / Γ$, an ADE singularity. The resulting 4D theories descend from compactification on Riemann surfaces decorated with punctures. We show that for class $\mathcal{S}_Γ$ theories, a puncture is specified by singular boundary conditions for fields in the 5D quiver gauge theory obtained from compactification of the 6D theory on a cylinder geometry. We determine general boundary conditions and study in detail solutions with first order poles. This yields a generalization of the Nahm pole data present for $1/2$ BPS punctures for theories of class $\mathcal{S}$. Focusing on specific algebraic structures, we show how the standard discussion of nilpotent orbits and its connection to representations of $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ generalizes in this broader context.

Three friendly walkers
Published in J Phys A 50, 024003 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
More than 15 years ago Guttmann and Vöge [J. Statist. Plann. Inference, {\bf 101}, 107 (2002)], introduced a model of friendly walkers. Since then it has remained unsolved. In this paper we provide the exact solution to a closely allied model, originally introduced by Tsuchiya and Katori [J. Phys. Soc. Japan {\bf 67}, 1655 (1988)], which essentially only differs in the boundary conditions. The exact solution is expressed in terms of the reciprocal of the generating function for vicious walkers which is a D-finite function. However, ratios of D-finite functions are inherently not D-finite and in this case we prove that the friendly walkers generating function is the solution to a non-linear differential equation with polynomial coefficients, it is in other words D-algebraic. We then show via numerically exact calculations that the generating function of the original model can also be expressed as a D-finite function times the reciprocal of the generating function for vicious walkers. We obtain an expression for this D-finite function in terms of a ${}_{2}F_{1}$ hypergeometric function with a rational pullback and its first and second derivatives.

Open intersection numbers and free fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
A complete set of the Virasoro and W-constraints for the Kontsevich-Penner model, which conjecturally describes intersections on moduli spaces of open curves, was derived in our previous work. Here we show that these constraints can be described in terms of free bosonic fields with twisted boundary conditions, which gives a modification of the well-known construction of the $W^{(3)}$ algebra in conformal field theory. This description is natural from the point of view of the spectral curve description, and should serve as a new important ingredient of the topological recursion/Givental decomposition.

The planar Ising model and total positivity
Published • View Publication • BIB
A matrix is called totally positive (resp. totally nonnegative) if all its minors are positive (resp. nonnegative). Consider the Ising model with free boundary conditions and no external field on a planar graph $G$. Let $a_1,\dots,a_k,b_k,\dots,b_1$ be vertices placed in a counterclockwise order on the outer face of $G$. We show that the $k\times k$ matrix of the two-point spin correlation functions \[ M_{i,j} = \langle σ_{a_i} σ_{b_j} \rangle \] is totally nonnegative. Moreover, $\det M > 0$ if and only if there exist $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint paths that connect $a_i$ with $b_i$. We also compute the scaling limit at criticality of the probability that there are $k$ parallel and disjoint connections between $a_i$ and $b_i$ in the double random current model. Our results are based on a new distributional relation between double random currents and random alternating flows of Talaska.

Basis for solutions of the Benoit & Saint-Aubin PDEs with particular asymptotic properties
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré D, 7(1):1-73, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
Applying the quantum group method developed in [KP20], we construct solutions to the Benoit & Saint-Aubin partial differential equations with boundary conditions given by specific recursive asymptotics properties. Our results generalize solutions constructed in [KP16, PW19], known as the pure partition functions of multiple Schramm-Loewner evolutions. The generalization is reminiscent of fusion in conformal field theory, and our solutions can be thought of as partition functions of systems of random curves, where many curves may emerge from the same point.

Arctic curves of the six-vertex model on generic domains: the Tangent Method
Published in J. Stat. Phys. 164 (2016) 1488 • View Publication • BIB
We revisit the problem of determining the Arctic curve in the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions. We describe an alternative method, by which we recover the previously conjectured analytic expression in the square domain. We adapt the method to work for a large class of domains, and for other models exhibiting limit shape phenomena. We study in detail some examples, and derive, in particular, the Arctic curve of the six-vertex model in a triangoloid domain at the ice-point.

Abstract graph-like space and vector-valued metric graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this note we present some abstract ideas how one can construct spaces from building blocks according to a graph. The coupling is expressed via boundary pairs, and can be applied to very different spaces such as discrete graphs, quantum graphs or graph-like manifolds. We show a spectral analysis of graph-like spaces, and consider as a special case vector-valued quantum graphs. Moreover, we provide a prototype of a convergence theorem for shrinking graph-like spaces with Dirichlet boundary conditions. (Dedicated to Pavel Exner's 70th birthday)

Symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices in the nineteen-vertex model
Published • View Publication • BIB
The nineteen-vertex model on a periodic lattice with an anti-diagonal twist is investigated. Its inhomogeneous transfer matrix is shown to have a simple eigenvalue, with the corresponding eigenstate displaying intriguing combinatorial features. Similar results were previously found for the same model with a diagonal twist. The eigenstate for the anti-diagonal twist is explicitly constructed using the quantum separation of variables technique. A number of sum rules and special components are computed and expressed in terms of Kuperberg's determinants for partition functions of the inhomogeneous six-vertex model. The computations of some components of the special eigenstate for the diagonal twist are also presented. In the homogeneous limit, the special eigenstates become eigenvectors of the Hamiltonians of the integrable spin-one XXZ chain with twisted boundary conditions. Their sum rules and special components for both twists are expressed in terms of generating functions arising in the weighted enumeration of various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices (ASMs). These include half-turn symmetric ASMs, quarter-turn symmetric ASMs, vertically symmetric ASMs, vertically and horizontally perverse ASMs and double U-turn ASMs. As side results, new determinant and pfaffian formulas for the weighted enumeration of various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices are obtained.
