A number of conjectures have been given recently concerning the connection between the antiferromagnetic XXZ spin chain at $Δ= - \frac12$ and various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. Here we use the integrability of the XXZ chain to gain further insight into these developments. In doing so we obtain a number of new results using Baxter's $Q$ function for the XXZ chain for periodic, twisted and open boundary conditions. These include expressions for the elementary symmetric functions evaluated at the groundstate solution of the Bethe roots. In this approach Schur functions play a central role and enable us to derive determinant expressions which appear in certain natural double products over the Bethe roots. When evaluated these give rise to the numbers counting different symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices.

This work as an extension of our recent paper where we have found a numerical evidence for the fact that the numbers of the states of the fully packed loop (FPL) model with fixed link-patterns coincide with the components of the ground state vector of the dense O(1) loop model for periodic boundary conditions and an even number of sites. Here we give two new conjectures related to different boundary conditions. Namely, we suggest that the numbers of the half-turn symmetric states of the FPL model with fixed link-patterns coincide with the components of the ground state vector of the dense O(1) loop model for periodic boundary conditions and an odd number of sites and that the corresponding numbers of the vertically symmetric states describe the case of the open boundary conditions and an even number of sites.

The finite XXZ Heisenberg spin chain with twisted boundary conditions was considered. For the case of even number of sites $N$, anisotropy parameter -1/2 and twisting angle $2 π/3$ the Hamiltonian of the system possesses an eigenvalue $-3N/2$. The explicit form of the corresponding eigenvector was found for $N \le 12$. Conjecturing that this vector is the ground state of the system we made and verified several conjectures related to the norm of the ground state vector, its component with maximal absolute value and some correlation functions, which have combinatorial nature. In particular, the squared norm of the ground state vector is probably coincides with the number of half-turn symmetric alternating sign $N \times N$ matrices.

We consider the groundstate wavefunction of the quantum symmetric antiferromagnetic XXZ chain with open and twisted boundary conditions at $Δ=-{1/2}$, along with the groundstate wavefunction of the corresponding O($n$) loop model at $n=1$. Based on exact results for finite-size systems, sums involving the wavefunction components, and in some cases the largest component itself, are conjectured to be directly related to the total number of alternating sign matrices and plane partitions in certain symmetry classes.

In this letter we continue the investigation of finite XXZ spin chains with periodic boundary conditions and odd number of sites, initiated in paper \cite{S}. As it turned out, for a special value of the asymmetry parameter $Δ=-1/2$ the Hamiltonian of the system has an eigenvalue, which is exactly proportional to the number of sites $E=-3N/2$. Using {\sc Mathematica} we have found explicitly the corresponding eigenvectors for $N \le 17$. The obtained results support the conjecture of paper \cite{S} that this special eigenvalue corresponds to the ground state vector. We make a lot of conjectures concerning the correlations of the model. Many remarkable relations between the wave function components are noticed. It is turned out, for example, that the ratio of the largest component to the least one is equal to the number of the alternating sing matrices.

We prove an asymptotic formula for the probability that, if one chooses a domino tiling of a large Aztec diamond at random according to the uniform distribution on such tilings, the tiling will contain a domino covering a given pair of adjacent lattice squares. This formula quantifies the effect of the diamond's boundary conditions on the behavior of typical tilings; in addition, it yields a new proof of the arctic circle theorem of Jockusch, Propp, and Shor. Our approach is to use the saddle point method to estimate certain weighted sums of squares of Krawtchouk polynomials (whose relevance to domino tilings is demonstrated elsewhere), and to combine these estimates with some exponential sum bounds to deduce our final result. This approach generalizes straightforwardly to the case in which the probability distribution on the set of tilings incorporates bias favoring horizontal over vertical tiles or vice versa. We also prove a fairly general large deviation estimate for domino tilings of simply-connected planar regions that implies that some of our results on Aztec diamonds apply to many other similar regions as well.

We formulate and prove a variational principle (in the sense of thermodynamics) for random domino tilings, or equivalently for the dimer model on a square grid. This principle states that a typical tiling of an arbitrary finite region can be described by a function that maximizes an entropy integral. We associate an entropy to every sort of local behavior domino tilings can exhibit, and prove that almost all tilings lie within epsilon (for an appropriate metric) of the unique entropy-maximizing solution. This gives a solution to the dimer problem with fully general boundary conditions, thereby resolving an issue first raised by Kasteleyn. Our methods also apply to dimer models on other grids and their associated tiling models, such as tilings of the plane by three orientations of unit lozenges.

Closed-form expressions are obtained for the partition function of the Ising model on an M x N simple-quartic lattice embedded on a Moebius strip and a Klein bottle for finite M and N. The finite-size effects at criticality are analyzed and compared with those under cylindrical and toroidal boundary conditions. Our analysis confirms that the central charge is c=1/2.

We state and prove several theorems that demonstrate how the coordinate Bethe Ansatz for the eigenvectors of suitable transfer matrices of a generalised inhomogeneous five-vertex model on the square lattice, given certain conditions hold, is equivalent to the Gessel-Viennot determinant for the number of configurations of $N$ non-intersecting directed lattice paths, or vicious walkers, with various boundary conditions. Our theorems are sufficiently general to allow generalisation to any regular planar lattice.

We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function (chromatic polynomial) and $W(q)$, the exponent of the ground-state entropy, for the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet with next-nearest-neighbor spin-spin couplings on square lattice strips, of width $L_y=3$ and $L_y=4$ vertices and arbitrarily great length $L_x$ vertices, with both free and periodic boundary conditions. The resultant values of $W$ for a range of physical $q$ values are compared with each other and with the values for the full 2D lattice. These results give insight into the effect of such non-nearest neighbor couplings on the ground state entropy. We show that the $q=2$ (Ising) and $q=4$ Potts antiferromagnets have zero-temperature critical points on the $L_x \to \infty$ limits of the strips that we study. With the generalization of $q$ from ${\mathbb Z}_+$ to ${\mathbb C}$, we determine the analytic structure of $W(q)$ in the $q$ plane for the various cases.

We study the chromatic polynomials (= zero-temperature antiferromagnetic Potts-model partition functions) P_G(q) for m \times n rectangular subsets of the square lattice, with m \le 8 (free or periodic transverse boundary conditions) and n arbitrary (free longitudinal boundary conditions), using a transfer matrix in the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation. In particular, we extract the limiting curves of partition-function zeros when n \to\infty, which arise from the crossing in modulus of dominant eigenvalues (Beraha-Kahane-Weiss theorem). We also provide evidence that the Beraha numbers B_2,B_3,B_4,B_5 are limiting points of partition-function zeros as n \to\infty whenever the strip width m is \ge 7 (periodic transverse b.c.) or \ge 8 (free transverse b.c.). Along the way, we prove that a noninteger Beraha number (except perhaps B_{10}) cannot be a chromatic root of any graph.

We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function for the q-state Potts antiferromagnet (equivalently, the chromatic polynomial) for two families of arbitrarily long strip graphs of the square lattice with periodic boundary conditions in the transverse direction and (i) periodic (ii) twisted periodic boundary conditions in the longitudinal direction, so that the strip graphs are embedded on a (i) torus (ii) Klein bottle. In the limit of infinite length, we calculate the exponent of the entropy, W(q), show it to be the same for (i) and (ii), and determine its analytic structure.

We consider the problem of enumerating spanning trees on lattices. Closed-form expressions are obtained for the spanning tree generating function for a hypercubic lattice of size N_1 x N_2 x...x N_d in d dimensions under free, periodic, and a combination of free and periodic boundary conditions. Results are also obtained for a simple quartic net embedded on two non-orientable surfaces, a Moebius strip and the Klein bottle. Our results are based on the use of a formula expressing the spanning tree generating function in terms of the eigenvalues of an associated tree matrix. An elementary derivation of this formula is given.

Let U be a multiply-connected region in R^2 with smooth boundary. Let P_epsilon be a polyomino in epsilon Z^2 approximating U as epsilon tends to 0. We show that, for certain boundary conditions on P_epsilon, the height distribution on a random domino tiling (dimer covering) of P_epsilon is conformally invariant in the limit as epsilon tends to
0, in the sense that the distribution of heights of boundary components only depends on the conformal type of U. The mean height and all the moments are explicitly evaluated.

We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function of the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet (equivalently the chromatic polynomial) for Moebius strips, with width $L_y=2$ or 3, of regular lattices and homeomorphic expansions thereof. These are compared with the corresponding partition functions for strip graphs with (untwisted) periodic longitudinal boundary conditions.

Closed-form expressions are obtained for the generating function of close-packed dimers on a $2M \times 2N$ simple quartic lattice embedded on a Möbius strip and a Klein bottle. Finite-size corrections are also analyzed and compared with those under cylindrical and free boundary conditions. Particularly, it is found that, for large lattices of the same size and with a square symmetry, the number of dimer configurations on a Möbius strip is 70.2% of that on a cylinder. We also establish two identities relating dimer generating functions for Möbius strips and cylinders.
The honeycomb model of GL(n) tensor products I: proof of the saturation conjecture

We introduce the honeycomb model of BZ polytopes, which calculate Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, the tensor product rule for GL(n). Our main result is the existence of a particularly well-behaved honeycomb with given boundary conditions (choice of triple of representations to be tensored together). This honeycomb is necessarily integral, which proves the "saturation conjecture", extending results of Klyachko to give a complete answer to which L-R coefficients are positive. This in turn has as a consequence Horn's conjecture from 1962 characterizing the spectrum of the sum of two Hermitian matrices.
