Rigidity of 3-colorings of the discrete torus
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that a uniformly chosen proper $3$-coloring of the $d$-dimensional discrete torus has a very rigid structure when the dimension $d$ is sufficiently high. We show that with high probability the coloring takes just one color on almost all of either the even or the odd sub-torus. In particular, one color appears on nearly half of the torus sites. This model is the zero temperature case of the $3$-state anti-ferromagnetic Potts model from statistical physics. Our work extends previously obtained results for the discrete torus with specific boundary conditions. The main challenge in this extension is to overcome certain topological obstructions which appear when no boundary conditions are imposed on the model. Locally, a proper $3$-coloring defines the discrete gradient of an integer-valued height function which changes by exactly one between adjacent sites. However, these locally-defined functions do not always yield a height function on the entire torus, as the gradients may accumulate to a non-zero quantity when winding around the torus. Our main result is that in high dimensions, a global height function is well defined with high probability, allowing to deduce the rigid structure of the coloring from previously known results. Moreover, the probability that the gradients accumulate to a vector $m$, corresponding to the winding in each of the $d$ directions, is at most exponentially small in the product of $\|m\|_\infty$ and the area of a cross-section of the torus. In the course of the proof we develop discrete analogues of notions from algebraic topology. This theory is developed in some generality and may be of use in the study of other models.

Third-order phase transition in random tilings
Published in Phys. Rev. E 88 (2013), 042125 (11 pp.) • View Publication • BIB
We consider the domino tilings of an Aztec diamond with a cut-off corner of macroscopic square shape and given size, and address the bulk properties of tilings as the size is varied. We observe that the free energy exhibits a third-order phase transition when the cut-off square, increasing in size, reaches the arctic ellipse---the phase separation curve of the original (unmodified) Aztec diamond. We obtain this result by studying the thermodynamic limit of certain nonlocal correlation function of the underlying six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions, the so-called emptiness formation probability (EFP). We consider EFP in two different representations: as a tau-function for Toda chains and as a random matrix model integral. The latter has a discrete measure and a linear potential with hard walls; the observed phase transition shares properties with both Gross-Witten-Wadia and Douglas-Kazakov phase transitions.

From Alternating Sign Matrices to the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble

The aim of this note is to prove that fluctuations of uniformly random alternating sign matrices (equivalently, configurations of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions) near the boundary are described by the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and the GUE-corners process.

Asymptotics of symmetric polynomials with applications to statistical mechanics and representation theory
Published in Annals of Probability 2015, Vol. 43, No. 6, 3052-3132 • View Publication • BIB
We develop a new method for studying the asymptotics of symmetric polynomials of representation-theoretic origin as the number of variables tends to infinity. Several applications of our method are presented: We prove a number of theorems concerning characters of infinite-dimensional unitary group and their $q$-deformations. We study the behavior of uniformly random lozenge tilings of large polygonal domains and find the GUE-eigenvalues distribution in the limit. We also investigate similar behavior for alternating sign matrices (equivalently, six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions). Finally, we compute the asymptotic expansion of certain observables in $O(n=1)$ dense loop model.
Phase Coexistence and Slow Mixing for the Hard-Core Model on Z^2
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the hard-core model on a finite graph we are given a parameter lambda>0, and an independent set I arises with probability proportional to lambda^|I|. On infinite graphs a Gibbs distribution is defined as a suitable limit with the correct conditional probabilities. In the infinite setting we are interested in determining when this limit is unique and when there is phase coexistence, i.e., existence of multiple Gibbs states. On finite graphs we are interested in determining the mixing time of local Markov chains. On Z^2 it is conjectured that these problems are related and that both undergo a phase transition at some critical point lambda_c approx 3.79. For phase coexistence, much of the work to date has focused on the regime of uniqueness, with the best result being recent work of Restrepo et al. showing that there is a unique Gibbs state for all lambda < 2.3882. Here we give the first non-trivial result in the other direction, showing that there are multiple Gibbs states for all lambda > 5.3646. Our proof adds two significant innovations to the standard Peierls argument. First, building on the idea of fault lines introduced by Randall, we construct an event that distinguishes two boundary conditions and always has long contours associated with it, obviating the need to accurately enumerate short contours. Second, we obtain vastly improved bounds on the number of contours by relating them to a new class of self-avoiding walks on an oriented version of Z^2. We extend our characterization of fault lines to show that local Markov chains will mix slowly when lambda > 5.3646 on lattice regions with periodic (toroidal) boundary conditions and when lambda > 7.1031 with non-periodic (free) boundary conditions. The arguments here rely on a careful analysis that relates contours to taxi walks and represent a sevenfold improvement to the previously best known values of λ.

The higher spin generalization of the 6-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions and Macdonald polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
The determinantal form of the partition function of the 6-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions was given by Izergin. It is known that for a special value of the crossing parameter the partition function reduces to a Schur polynomial. Caradoc, Foda and Kitanine computed the partition function of the higher spin generalization of the 6-vertex model. In the present work it is shown that for a special value of the crossing parameter, referred to as the combinatorial point, the partition function reduces to a Macdonald polynomial.

Fully Packed Loops in a triangle: matchings, paths and puzzles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fully Packed Loop configurations in a triangle (TFPLs) first appeared in the study of ordinary Fully Packed Loop configurations (FPLs) on the square grid where they were used to show that the number of FPLs with a given link pattern that has m nested arches is a polynomial function in m. It soon turned out that TFPLs possess a number of other nice properties. For instance, they can be seen as a generalized model of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We start our article by introducing oriented versions of TFPLs; their main advantage in comparison with ordinary TFPLs is that they involve only local constraints. Three main contributions are provided. Firstly, we show that the number of ordinary TFPLs can be extracted from a weighted enumeration of oriented TFPLs and thus it suffices to consider the latter. Secondly, we decompose oriented TFPLs into two matchings and use a classical bijection to obtain two families of nonintersecting lattice paths (path tangles). This point of view turns out to be extremely useful for giving easy proofs of previously known conditions on the boundary of TFPLs necessary for them to exist. One example is the inequality d(u)+d(v)<=d(w) where u,v,w are 01-words that encode the boundary conditions of ordinary TFPLs and d(u) is the number of cells in the Ferrers diagram associated with u. In the third part we consider TFPLs with d(w)- d(u)-d(v)=0,1; in the first case their numbers are given by Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, but also in the second case we provide formulas that are in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. The proofs of these formulas are of a purely combinatorial nature.

Meunier Conjecture
Frédéric Meunier's question about a multicolored Sperner lemma is addressed, leaving the question of connectivity for the color hypergraphs of such a multicolored simplex. Sperner's lemma asserts the existence of a simplex using all the colors for any vertex coloring of a subdivision of a large simplex with appropriate boundary conditions. Meunier's questions generalizes this to the situation of having several such colorings and asserts the existence of a simplex using enough different colors from each coloring.

T-systems with boundaries from network solutions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we use the network solution of the $A_r$ $T$-system to derive that of the unrestricted $A_\infty$ $T$-system, equivalent to the octahedron relation. We then present a method for implementing various boundary conditions on this system, which consists of picking initial data with suitable symmetries. The corresponding restricted $T$-systems are solved exactly in terms of networks. This gives a simple explanation for phenomena such as the Zamolodchikov periodicity property for $T$-systems (corresponding to the case $A_\ell\times A_r$) and a combinatorial interpretation for the positive Laurent property of the variables of the associated cluster algebra. We also explain the relation between the $T$-system wrapped on a torus and the higher pentagram maps of Gekhtman et al.

Multiply-refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices
Published in Adv. Math. 245 (2013) 439-499 • View Publication • BIB
Four natural boundary statistics and two natural bulk statistics are considered for alternating sign matrices (ASMs). Specifically, these statistics are the positions of the 1's in the first and last rows and columns of an ASM, and the numbers of generalized inversions and -1's in an ASM. Previously-known and related results for the exact enumeration of ASMs with prescribed values of some of these statistics are discussed in detail. A quadratic relation which recursively determines the generating function associated with all six statistics is then obtained. This relation also leads to various new identities satisfied by generating functions associated with fewer than six of the statistics. The derivation of the relation involves combining the Desnanot-Jacobi determinant identity with the Izergin-Korepin formula for the partition function of the six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions.

New enumeration formulas for alternating sign matrices and square ice partition functions
Published in Advances in Mathematics, Volume 235 (2013), Pages 161-186 • View Publication • BIB
The refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices (ASMs) of given order having prescribed behavior near one or more of their boundary edges has been the subject of extensive study, starting with the Refined Alternating Sign Matrix Conjecture of Mills-Robbins-Rumsey, its proof by Zeilberger, and more recent work on doubly-refined and triply-refined enumeration by several authors. In this paper we extend the previously known results on this problem by deriving explicit enumeration formulas for the "top-left-bottom" (triply-refined) and "top-left-bottom-right" (quadruply-refined) enumerations. The latter case solves the problem of computing the full boundary correlation function for ASMs. The enumeration formulas are proved by deriving new representations, which are of independent interest, for the partition function of the square ice model with domain wall boundary conditions at the "combinatorial point" 2π/3.

Edge-isoperimetric problem for Cayley graphs and generalized Takagi function
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite abelian abelian group of exponent $m\ge 2$. For subsets $A,S\subset G$, denote by $\partial_S(A)$ the number of edges from $A$ to its complement $G\setminus A$ in the directed Cayley graph, induced by $S$ on $G$. We show that if $S$ generates $G$, and $A$ is non-empty, then $$ \partial_S(A) \ge \frac{e}m\,|A|\ln\frac{|G|}{|A|}. $$ Here the coefficient $e=2.718...$ is best possible and cannot be replaced with a number larger than $e$. For homocyclic groups $G$ of exponent $m$, we find an explicit closed-form expression for $\partial_S(A)$ in the case where $S$ is a "standard" generating subset of $G$, and $A$ is an initial segment of $G$ with respect to the lexicographic order, induced by $S$ on $G$. Namely, we show that in this situation $$ \partial_S(A) = |G|\,ω_m(|A|/|G|), $$ where $ω_2$ is the Takagi function, and $ω_m$ for $m\ge 3$ is an appropriate generalization thereof. This particular case is of special interest, since for $m\in\{2,3,4\}$ it is known to yield the smallest possible value of $\partial_S(A)$, over all sets $A\subset G$ of given size. We give this classical result a new proof, somewhat different from the standard one. We also give a new, short proof of the Boros-Pales inequality $$ω_2(\frac{x+y}2) \le \frac{ω_2(x) + ω_2(y)}2 + \frac12\,|y-x|, $$ establish an extremal characterization of the Takagi function as the (pointwise) maximal function, satisfying this inequality and the boundary condition $\max\{ω_2(0),ω_2(1)\}\le 0$, and obtain similar results for the 3-adic analog $ω_3$ of the Takagi function.

Hard squares on cylinders revisited
We consider the independence complexes of square grids with cylindrical boundary conditions. When one of the dimensions is small we use simple reductions induced by edge removals to show explicit natural homotopy equivalences between those spaces. In the second part we expand the results of Jonsson, who calculated the Euler characteristic of cylinders with odd circumference. We describe a series of results for cylinders of even circumference. Finally we define a completely independent combinatorial model (necklaces) which calculates the generating functions of the Euler characteristic of cylindrical grids. We conjecture that this model has some particularly simple structure.
A doubly-refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices and descending plane partitions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 120 (2013) 409-432 • View Publication • BIB
It was shown recently by the authors that, for any n, there is equality between the distributions of certain triplets of statistics on nxn alternating sign matrices (ASMs) and descending plane partitions (DPPs) with each part at most n. The statistics for an ASM A are the number of generalized inversions in A, the number of -1's in A and the number of 0's to the left of the 1 in the first row of A, and the respective statistics for a DPP D are the number of nonspecial parts in D, the number of special parts in D and the number of n's in D. Here, the result is generalized to include a fourth statistic for each type of object, where this is the number of 0's to the right of the 1 in the last row of an ASM, and the number of (n-1)'s plus the number of rows of length n-1 in a DPP. This generalization is proved using the known equality of the three-statistic generating functions, together with relations which express each four-statistic generating function in terms of its three-statistic counterpart. These relations are obtained by applying the Desnanot-Jacobi identity to determinantal expressions for the generating functions, where the determinants arise from standard methods involving the six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions for ASMs, and nonintersecting lattice paths for DPPs.

Supersymmetric lattice fermions on the triangular lattice: superfrustration and criticality
Published in New J. Phys. 14, 073002 (2012) • View Publication • BIB
We study a model for itinerant, strongly interacting fermions where a judicious tuning of the interactions leads to a supersymmetric Hamiltonian. On the triangular lattice this model is known to exhibit a property called superfrustration, which is characterized by an extensive ground state entropy. Using a combination of numerical and analytical methods we study various ladder geometries obtained by imposing doubly periodic boundary conditions on the triangular lattice. We compare our results to various bounds on the ground state degeneracy obtained in the literature. For all systems we find that the number of ground states grows exponentially with system size. For two of the models that we study we obtain the exact number of ground states by solving the cohomology problem. For one of these, we find that via a sequence of mappings the entire spectrum can be understood. It exhibits a gapped phase at 1/4 filling and a gapless phase at 1/6 filling and phase separation at intermediate fillings. The gapless phase separates into an exponential number of sectors, where the continuum limit of each sector is described by a superconformal field theory.

Fully Packed Loop configurations in a triangle
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A Volume 120, Issue 8, November 2013, Pages 2164-2188 • View Publication • BIB
Fully Packed Loop configurations (FPLs) are certain configurations on the square grid, naturally refined according to certain link patterns. If $A_X$ is the number of FPLs with link pattern $X$, the Razumov--Stroganov correspondence provides relations between numbers $A_X$ relative to a given grid size. In another line of research, if $X\cup p$ denotes $X$ with $p$ additional nested arches, then $A_{X\cup p}$ was shown to be polynomial in $p$: the proof gives rise to certain configurations of FPLs in a triangle (TFPLs). In this work we investigate these TFPL configurations and their relation to FPLs. We prove certain properties of TFPLs, and enumerate them under special boundary conditions. From this study we deduce a class of linear relations, conjectured by Thapper, between quantities $A_X$ relative to different grid sizes, relations which thus differ from the Razumov--Stroganov ones.

Non-homogenous disks in the chain of matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the generating functions of multi-colored discrete disks with non-homogenous boundary conditions in the context of the Hermitian multi-matrix model where the matrices are coupled in an open chain. We show that the study of the spectral curve of the matrix model allows one to solve a set of loop equations to get a recursive formula computing mixed trace correlation functions to leading order in the large matrix limit.
On the weighted enumeration of alternating sign matrices and descending plane partitions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 119 (2012) 331-363 • View Publication • BIB
We prove a conjecture of Mills, Robbins and Rumsey [Alternating sign matrices and descending plane partitions, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 34 (1983), 340-359] that, for any n, k, m and p, the number of nxn alternating sign matrices (ASMs) for which the 1 of the first row is in column k+1 and there are exactly m -1's and m+p inversions is equal to the number of descending plane partitions (DPPs) for which each part is at most n and there are exactly k parts equal to n, m special parts and p nonspecial parts. The proof involves expressing the associated generating functions for ASMs and DPPs with fixed n as determinants of nxn matrices, and using elementary transformations to show that these determinants are equal. The determinants themselves are obtained by standard methods: for ASMs this involves using the Izergin-Korepin formula for the partition function of the six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions, together with a bijection between ASMs and configurations of this model, and for DPPs it involves using the Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot theorem, together with a bijection between DPPs and certain sets of nonintersecting lattice paths.

Algebraic arctic curves in the domain-wall six-vertex model
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 44 (2011) 195201 • View Publication • BIB
The arctic curve, i.e. the spatial curve separating ordered (or `frozen') and disordered (or `temperate) regions, of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions is discussed for the root-of-unity vertex weights. In these cases the curve is described by algebraic equations which can be worked out explicitly from the parametric solution for this curve. Some interesting examples are discussed in detail. The upper bound on the maximal degree of the equation in a generic root-of-unity case is obtained.

Domino shuffling for the Del Pezzo 3 lattice
We present a version of the domino shuffling algorithm (due to Elkies, Kuperberg, Larsen and Propp) which works on a different lattice: the hexagonal lattice superimposed on its dual graph. We use our algorithm to count perfect matchings on a family of finite subgraphs of this lattice whose boundary conditions are compatible with our algorithm. In particular, we re-prove an enumerative theorem of Ciucu, as well as finding a related family of subgraphs which have 2^{(n+1)^2} perfect matchings. We also give three-variable generating functions for perfect matchings on both families of graphs, which encode certain statistics on the height functions of these graphs.
