In this paper we use generating function methods to obtain new asymptotic results about spaces of $F$-stable maximal tori in $GL_n(\overline{F_q})$, $Sp_{2n}(\overline{F_q})$, and $SO_{2n+1}(\overline{F_q})$. We recover stability results of Church--Ellenberg--Farb and Jiménez Rolland--Wilson for "polynomial" statistics on these spaces, and we compute explicit formulas for their stable values. We derive a double generating function for the characters of the cohomology of flag varieties in type B/C, which we use to obtain analogs in type B/C of results of Chen: we recover "twisted homological stability" for the spaces of maximal tori in $Sp_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $SO_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and we compute a generating function for their "stable twisted Betti numbers". We also give a new proof of a result of Lehrer using symmetric function theory.
Cubic graphs and the golden mean

The connective constant $μ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the exponential growth rate of the number of self-avoiding walks starting at a given vertex. We investigate the validity of the inequality $μ\ge φ$ for infinite, transitive, simple, cubic graphs, where $φ:= \frac12(1+\sqrt 5)$ is the golden mean. The inequality is proved for several families of graphs including (i) Cayley graphs of infinite groups with three generators and strictly positive first Betti number, (ii) infinite, transitive, topologically locally finite (TLF) planar, cubic graphs, and (iii) cubic Cayley graphs with two ends. Bounds for $μ$ are presented for transitive cubic graphs with girth either $3$ or $4$, and for certain quasi-transitive cubic graphs.
On Primes, Graphs and Cohomology
The counting function on the natural numbers defines a discrete Morse-Smale complex with a cohomology for which topological quantities like Morse indices, Betti numbers or counting functions for critical points of Morse index are explicitly given in number theoretical terms. The Euler characteristic of the Morse filtration is related to the Mertens function, the Poincaré-Hopf indices at critical points correspond to the values of the Moebius function. The Morse inequalities link number theoretical quantities like the prime counting functions relevant for the distribution of primes with cohomological properties of the graphs. The just given picture is a special case of a discrete Morse cohomology equivalent to simplicial cohomology. The special example considered here is a case where the graph is the Barycentric refinement of a finite simple graph.
Random simplicial complexes
Random shapes arise naturally in many contexts. The topological and geometric structure of such objects is interesting for its own sake, and also for applications. In physics, for example, such objects arise naturally in quantum gravity, in material science, and in other settings. Stochastic topology may also be considered as a null hypothesis for topological data analysis.
In this chapter we overview combinatorial aspects of stochastic topology. We focus on the topological and geometric properties of random simplicial complexes. We introduce a few of the fundamental models in Section 23.1. We review high-dimensional expander-like properties of random complexes in Section 23.2. We discuss threshold behavior and phase transitions in Section 23.3, and Betti numbers and persistent homology in Section 23.4.

In this article, we introduce a fixed parameter tractable algorithm for computing the Turaev-Viro invariants TV(4,q), using the dimension of the first homology group of the manifold as parameter.
This is, to our knowledge, the first parameterised algorithm in computational 3-manifold topology using a topological parameter. The computation of TV(4,q) is known to be #P-hard in general; using a topological parameter provides an algorithm polynomial in the size of the input triangulation for the extremely large family of 3-manifolds with first homology group of bounded rank.
Our algorithm is easy to implement and running times are comparable with running times to compute integral homology groups for standard libraries of triangulated 3-manifolds. The invariants we can compute this way are powerful: in combination with integral homology and using standard data sets we are able to roughly double the pairs of 3-manifolds we can distinguish.
We hope this qualifies TV(4,q) to be added to the short list of standard properties (such as orientability, connectedness, Betti numbers, etc.) that can be computed ad-hoc when first investigating an unknown triangulation.

Amit and Linial showed that a random lift of a graph with minimum degree $δ\ge3$ is asymptotically almost surely $δ$-connected, and mentioned the problem of estimating this probability as a function of the degree of the lift. We relate a randomly generated subgroup of the symmetric group on $n$ elements to random $n$-lifts of a graph and use it to provide such an estimate along with related results. We also improve their later result showing a lower bound on the edge expansion on random lifts. Our proofs rely on new ideas from group theory which make several improvements possible. We exactly calculate the probability that a random lift of a connected graph with first Betti number $l$ is connected by showing that it is equal to the probability that a subgroup of the symmetric group generated by $l$ random elements is transitive. We also calculate the probability that a subgroup of a wreath product of symmetric groups generated by $l$ random generators is transitive. We show the existence of homotopy invariants in random covering graphs which reduces some of their properties to those of random regular multigraphs, and in particular makes it possible to compute the exact probability with which random regular multigraphs are connected. All our results about random lifts easily extend to iterated random lifts.

Let $G$ be a finite simple graph. We give a lower bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the toric ideal $I_G$ associated to $G$ in terms of the sizes and number of induced complete bipartite graphs in $G$. When $G$ is a chordal bipartite graph, we find an upper bound for the regularity of $I_G$ in terms of the size of the bipartition of $G$. We also give a new proof for the graded Betti numbers of the toric ideal associated to the complete bipartite graph $K_{2,n}$.

We prove a dual version of Øystein Ore's theorem on distributive intervals in the subgroup lattice of finite groups, having a nonzero dual Euler totient $\hat{\varphi}$. For any Boolean group-complemented interval, we observe that $\hat{\varphi} = \varphi \neq 0$ by the original Ore's theorem. We also discuss some applications in representation theory. We conjecture that $\hat{\varphi}$ is always nonzero for Boolean intervals. In order to investigate it, we prove that for any Boolean group-complemented interval $[H,G]$, the graded coset poset $\hat{P} = \hat{C}(H,G)$ is Cohen-Macaulay and the nontrivial reduced Betti number of the order complex $Δ(P)$ is $\hat{\varphi}$, so nonzero. We deduce that these results are true beyond the group-complemented case with $|G:H|<32$. One observes that they are also true when $H$ is a Borel subgroup of $G$.

We generalize the well-known "12" and "24" Theorems for reflexive polytopes of dimension 2 and 3 to any smooth reflexive polytope. Our methods apply to a wider category of objects, here called reflexive GKM graphs, that are associated with certain monotone symplectic manifolds which do not necessarily admit a toric action. As an application, we provide bounds on the Betti numbers for certain monotone Hamiltonian spaces which depend on the minimal Chern number of the manifold.

Recently Brosnan and Chow have proven a conjecture of Shareshian and Wachs describing a representation of the symmetric group on the cohomology of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties for $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$. A key component of their argument is that the Betti numbers of regular Hessenberg varieties for $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ are palindromic. In this paper, we extend this result to all reductive algebraic groups, proving that the Betti numbers of regular Hessenberg varieties are palindromic.
Twisted cohomology of configuration spaces and spaces of maximal tori via point-counting
We consider two families of algebraic varieties $Y_n$ indexed by natural numbers $n$: the configuration space of unordered $n$-tuples of distinct points on $\mathbb{C}$, and the space of unordered $n$-tuples of linearly independent lines in $\mathbb{C}^n$. Let $W_n$ be any sequence of virtual $S_n$-representations given by a character polynomial, we compute $H^i(Y_n; W_n)$ for all $i$ and all $n$ in terms of double generating functions. One consequence of the computation is a new recurrence phenomenon: the stable twisted Betti numbers $\lim_{n\to\infty}\dim H^i(Y_n; W_n)$ are linearly recurrent in $i$. Our method is to compute twisted point-counts on the $F_q$-points of certain algebraic varieties, and then pass through the Grothendieck-Lefschetz fixed point formula to prove results in topology. We also generalize a result of Church-Ellenberg-Farb about the configuration spaces of the affine line to those of a general smooth variety.

Chordal clutters in the sense of [14] and [3] are defined via simplicial orders. Their circuit ideal has a linear resolution, independent of the characteristic of the base field. We show that any Betti sequence of an ideal with linear resolution appears as the Betti sequence of the circuit ideal of such a chordal clutter. Associated with any simplicial order is a sequence of integers which we call the $λ$-sequence of the chordal clutter. All possible $λ$-sequences are characterized. They are intimately related to the Hilbert function of a suitable standard graded $K$-algebra attached to the chordal clutter. By the $λ$-sequence of a chordal clutter we determine other numerical invariants of the circuit ideal, such as the $\textbf{h}$-vector and the Betti numbers.

We analyze the asymptotic extremal growth rate of the Betti numbers of clique complexes of graphs on n vertices not containing a fixed forbidden induced subgraph H.
In particular, we prove a theorem of the alternative: for any H the growth rate achieves exactly one of five possible exponentials, that is, independent of the field of coefficients, the nth root of the maximal total Betti number over n-vertex graphs with no induced copy of H has a limit, as n tends to infinity, and, ranging over all H, exactly five different limits are attained.
For the interesting case where H is the 4-cycle, the above limit is 1, and we prove a slightly superpolynomial upper bound.

We present measure theoretic rigidity for graphs of first Betti number b>1 in terms of measures on the boundary of a 2b-regular tree, that we make explicit in terms of the edge-adjacency and closed-walk structure of the graph. We prove that edge-reconstruction of the entire graph is equivalent to that of the "closed walk lengths".
A new shellability proof of an identity of Dixon
We give a new proof of an old identity of Dixon (1865-1936) that uses tools from topological combinatorics. Dixon's identity is re-established by constructing an infinite family of non-pure simplicial complexes $Δ(n)$, indexed by the positive integers, such that the alternating sum of the numbers of faces of $Δ(n)$ of each dimension is the left-hand side of the identity. We show that $Δ(n)$ is shellable for all $n$. Then, using the fact that a shellable simplicial complex is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres, we compute the Betti numbers of $Δ(n)$ by counting (via a generating function) the number of facets of $Δ(n)$ of each dimension that attach along their entire boundary in the shelling order. In other words, Dixon's identity is re-established by using the Euler-Poincaré relation.

We apply the methods of algebraic reliability to the study of percolation on trees. To a complete $k$-ary tree $T_{k,n}$ of depth $n$ we assign a monomial ideal $I_{k,n}$ on $\sum_{i=1}^n k^i$ variables and $k^n$ minimal monomial generators. We give explicit recursive formulae for the Betti numbers of $I_{k,n}$ and their Hilbert series, which allow us to study explicitly percolation on $T_{k,n}$. We study bounds on this percolation and study its asymptotical behavior with the mentioned commutative algebra techniques.

We study face numbers of simplicial complexes that triangulate manifolds (or even normal pseudomanifolds) with boundary. Specifically, we establish a sharp lower bound on the number of interior edges of a simplicial normal pseudomanifold with boundary in terms of the number of interior vertices and relative Betti numbers. Moreover, for triangulations of manifolds with boundary all of whose vertex links have the weak Lefschetz property, we extend this result to sharp lower bounds on the number of higher-dimensional interior faces. Along the way we develop a version of Bagchi and Datta's $σ$- and $μ$-numbers for the case of relative simplicial complexes and prove stronger versions of the above statements with the Betti numbers replaced by the $μ$-numbers. Our results provide natural generalizations of known theorems and conjectures for closed manifolds and appear to be new even for the case of a ball.

Let $X$ be an $(m\times n)$-matrix of indeterminates, and let $J$ be the ideal generated by a set $\mathcal{S}$ of maximal minors of $X$. We construct the linear strand of the resolution of $J$. This linear strand is determined by the clique complex of the $m$-clutter corresponding to the set $\mathcal{S}$. As a consequence one obtains explicit formulas for the graded Betti numbers $β_{i,i+m}(J)$ for all $i\geq 0$. We also determine all sets $\mathcal{S}$ for which $J$ has a linear resolution.
Inversions of Semistandard Young Tableaux

A tableau inversion is a pair of entries from the same column of a row-standard tableau that lack the relative ordering necessary to make the tableau column-standard. An $i$-inverted Young tableau is a row-standard tableau with precisely $i$ inversion pairs, and may be interpreted as a generalization of (column-standard) Young tableau. Inverted Young tableau that lack repeated entries were introduced by Fresse to calculate the Betti numbers of Springer fibers in Type A, and were later developed as combinatorial objects in their own right by Beagley and Drube. This paper generalizes earlier notions of tableau inversions to row-standard tableaux with repeated entries, yielding an interesting new generalization of semistandard (as opposed to merely standard) Young tableaux. We develop a closed formula for the maximum numbers of inversion pairs for a row-standard tableau with a specific shape and content, and show that the number of $i$-inverted tableaux of a given shape is invariant under permutation of content. We then enumerate $i$-inverted Young tableaux for a variety of shapes and contents, and generalize an earlier result that places $1$-inverted Young tableaux of a general shape in bijection with $0$-inverted Young tableaux of a variety of related shapes.
