The moduli space $Δ_{g,w}$ of tropical $w$-weighted stable curves of volume $1$ is naturally identified with the dual complex of the divisor of singular curves in Hassett's spaces of $w$-weighted stable curves. If at least two of the weights are $1$, we prove that $Δ_{0,w}$ is homotopic to a wedge sum of spheres, possibly of varying dimensions. Under additional natural hypotheses on the weight vector, we establish explicit formulas for the Betti numbers of the spaces. We exhibit infinite families of weights for which the space $Δ_{0,w}$ is disconnected and for which the fundamental group of $Δ_{0,w}$ has torsion. In the latter case, the universal cover is shown to have a natural modular interpretation. This places the weighted variant of the space in stark contrast to the heavy/light cases studied previously by Vogtmann and Cavalieri-Hampe-Markwig-Ranganathan. Finally, we prove a structural result relating the spaces of weighted stable curves in genus $0$ and $1$, and leverage this to extend several of our genus $0$ results to the spaces $Δ_{1,w}$.
One-skeleta of $G$-parking function ideals: resolutions and standard monomials
Given a graph $G$, the $G$-parking function ideal $M_G$ is an artinian monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $S$ with the property that a linear basis for $S/M_G$ is provided by the set of $G$-parking functions. It follows that the dimension of $S/M_G$ is given by the number of spanning trees of $G$, which by the Matrix Tree Theorem is equal to the determinant of the reduced Laplacian of $G$. The ideals $M_G$ and related algebras were introduced by Postnikov and Shapiro where they studied their Hilbert functions and homological properties. The author and Sanyal showed that a minimal resolution of $M_G$ can be constructed from the graphical hyperplane arrangement associated to $G$, providing a combinatorial interpretation of the Betti numbers.
Motivated by constructions in the theory of chip-firing on graphs, we study certain `skeleton' ideals $M_G^{(k)} \subset M_G$ generated by subsets of vertices of $G$ of size at most $k+1$. Here we focus our attention on the case $k=1$, the $1$-skeleton of the $G$-parking functions ideals. We consider standard monomials of $M_G^{(1)}$ and provide a combinatorial interpretation for the dimension of $S/M_G^{(1)}$ in terms of the signless Laplacian for the case $G = K_{n+1}$ is the complete graph. Our main study concerns homological properties of these ideals. We study resolutions of $M_G^{(1)}$ and show that for a certain class of graphs minimal resolution is supported on decompositions of Euclidean space coming from the theory of tropical hyperplane arrangements. This leads to combinatorial interpretations of the Betti numbers of these ideals.
The strong ring of simplicial complexes
We define a ring R of geometric objects G generated by finite abstract simplicial complexes. To every G belongs Hodge Laplacian H as the square of the Dirac operator determining its cohomology and a unimodular connection matrix L). The sum of the matrix entries of the inverse of L is the Euler characteristic. The spectra of H as well as inductive dimension add under multiplication while the spectra of L multiply. The nullity of the Hodge of H are the Betti numbers which can now be signed. The map assigning to G its Poincare polynomial is a ring homomorphism from R the polynomials. Especially the Euler characteristic is a ring homomorphism. Also Wu characteristic produces a ring homomorphism. The Kuenneth correspondence between cohomology groups is explicit as a basis for the product can be obtained from a basis of the factors. The product in R produces the strong product for the connection graphs and leads to tensor products of connection Laplacians. The strong ring R is also a subring of the full Stanley-Reisner ring S Every element G can be visualized by its Barycentric refinement graph G1 and its connection graph G'. Gauss-Bonnet, Poincare-Hopf or the Brouwer-Lefschetz extend to the strong ring. The isomorphism of R with a subring of the strong Sabidussi ring shows that the multiplicative primes in R are the simplicial complexes and that every connected element in the strong ring has a unique prime factorization. The Sabidussi ring is dual to the Zykov ring, in which the Zykov join is the addition. The connection Laplacian of the d-dimensional lattice remains invertible in the infinite volume limit: there is a mass gap in any dimension.

We study the equality of the extremal Betti numbers of the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ and those of its initial ideal ${\rm in}(J_G)$ of a closed graph $G$. We prove that in some cases there is an unique extremal Betti number for ${\rm in}(J_G)$ and as a consequence there is an unique extremal Betti number for $J_G$ and these extremal Betti numbers are equal

We study the maximal values of Betti numbers of tropical subvarieties of a given dimension and degree in $\mathbb{TP}^n$. We provide a lower estimate for the maximal value of the top Betti number, which naturally depends on the dimension and degree, but also on the codimension. In particular, when the codimension is large enough, this lower estimate is larger than the maximal value of the corresponding Hodge number of complex algebraic projective varieties of the given dimension and degree. In the case of surfaces, we extend our study to all tropical homology groups. As a special case, we prove that there exist planar tropical cubic curves of genus $g$ for any non-negative integer $g$.
Toric h-vectors and Chow Betti Numbers of Dual Hypersimplices
The toric h-numbers of a dual hypersimplex and the Chow Betti numbers of the normal fan of a hypersimplex are the ranks of intersection cohomology and Chow cohomology respectively of the torus orbit closure of a generic point in the Grassmannian. We give explicit formulas for these numbers. We also show that similar formulas hold for the coordinator numbers of type A^* lattices.

We study the homology of an explicit finite-index subgroup of the automorphism group of a partially commutative group, in the case when its defining graph is a tree. More concretely, we give a lower bound on the first Betti number of this subgroup, based on the number and degree of a certain type of vertices, which we call deep. We then use combinatorial methods to analyze the average value of this Betti number, in terms of the size of the defining tree.
The ideal of maximal flags of a poset
We study algebraic and homological properties of facet ideals of order complexes of posets which we call ideals of maximal flags of posets or simply flag ideals. We characterize the unmixed and Cohen-Macaulay flag ideals of graded posets. We also give structural results for the multigraded Betti numbers of flag ideals of such posets. The structural results on multigraded Betti numbers of flag ideals are used to characterize the class of flag ideals with linear resolutions.

We consider a finite simplicial complex $K$ together with its successive barycentric subdivisions $Sd^d(K), d\geq0,$ and study the expected topology of a random subcomplex in $Sd^d(K), d\gg0$. We get asymptotic upper and lower bounds for the expected Betti numbers of those subcomplexes, together with the average Morse inequalities and expected Euler characteristic.

We use the probabilistic method to construct examples of conjectured phenomenon about asymptotic syzygies. In particular, we use the Stanley-Reisner ideals of random flag complexes to construct new examples of Ein and Lazarsfeld's nonvanishing for asymptotic syzygies and of Ein, Erman, and Lazarsfeld's conjectural on the asymptotic normal distribution of Betti numbers.

Given a simple graph $G$, a poset of its even subgraphs was firstly considered by S. Choi and H. Park to study the topology of a real toric manifold associated with $G$. S. Choi and the authors extended this to a graph allowing multiple edges, motivated by the work on the pseudograph associahedron of Carr, Devadoss and Forcey. In this paper, we completely characterize the graphs (allowing multiple edges) whose posets of even subgraphs are always shellable. By the result, we also compute the Betti numbers of a real toric manifold corresponding to a path with two multiple edges.
The Type Defect of a Simplicial Complex

Fix a field $k$. When $Δ$ is a simplicial complex on $n$ vertices with Stanley-Reisner ideal $I_Δ$, we define and study an invariant called the $\textit{type defect}$ of $Δ$. Except when $Δ$ is of a single simplex, the type defect of $Δ$, $\textrm{td}(Δ)$, is the difference $ \dim_k \textrm{Tor}_c^S(S/ I_Δ,k) - c$, where $c$ is the codimension of $Δ$ and $S = k[x_1, \ldots x_n]$. We show that this invariant admits surprisingly nice properties. For example, it is well-behaved when one glues two complexes together along a face. Furthermore, $Δ$ is Cohen-Macaulay if $\textrm{td}(Δ) \leq 0$. On the other hand, if $Δ$ is a simple graph (viewed as a one-dimensional complex), then $\textrm{td}(Δ') \geq 0$ for every induced subgraph $Δ'$ of $Δ$ if and only if $Δ$ is chordal. Requiring connected induced subgraphs to have type defect zero allows us to define a class of graphs that we call $\textit{treeish}$, and which we generalize to simplicial complexes. We then extend some of our chordality results to higher dimensions, proving sharp lower bounds for most Betti numbers of ideals with linear resolution, and classifying when equalities occur. As an application, we prove sharp lower bounds for Betti numbers of graded ideals (not necessarily monomial) with linear resolution.
Betti splitting from a topological point of view

A Betti splitting $I=J+K$ of a monomial ideal $I$ ensures the recovery of the graded Betti numbers of $I$ starting from those of $J,K$ and $J \cap K$. In this paper, we introduce this condition for simplicial complexes, and, by using Alexander duality, we prove that it is equivalent to a recursive splitting conditions on links of some vertices. The adopted point of view enables for relating the existence of a Betti splitting for a simplicial complex $Δ$ to the topological properties of $Δ$. Among other results, we prove that orientability for a manifold without boundary is equivalent to admit a Betti splitting induced by the removal of a single facet. Taking advantage of this topological approach, we provide the first example in literature admitting Betti splitting but with characteristic-dependent resolution. Moreover, we introduce the notion of splitting probability, useful to deal with results concerning existence of Betti splitting.

Let X be a k-dimensional simplicial complex such that the (k-j-2)-dimensional homology of the links of all j-dimensional simplices in X vanishes. An upper bound is given on the (k-1)-th Betti number of X. Examples based on sum complexes show that this bound is asymptotically sharp for all fixed j<k.

Inspired by the study of random graphs and simplicial complexes, and motivated by the need to understand average behavior of ideals, we propose and study probabilistic models of random monomial ideals. We prove theorems about the probability distributions, expectations and thresholds for events involving monomial ideals with given Hilbert function, Krull dimension, first graded Betti numbers, and present several experimentally-backed conjectures about regularity, projective dimension, strong genericity, and Cohen-Macaulayness of random monomial ideals.
Hessenberg varieties of parabolic type

This paper studies the geometry and combinatorics of three interrelated varieties: Springer fibers, Steinberg varieties, and parabolic Hessenberg varieties. We prove that each parabolic Hessenberg variety is the pullback of a Steinberg variety under the projection of the flag variety to an appropriate partial flag variety and we give three applications of this result. The first application constructs an explicit paving of all Steinberg varieties in Lie type $A$ in terms of semistandard tableaux. As a result, we obtain an elementary proof of a theorem of Steinberg and Shimomura that the well-known Kostka numbers count the maximal-dimensional irreducible components of Steinberg varieties. The second application proves an open conjecture for certain parabolic Hessenberg varieties in Lie type A by showing that their Betti numbers equal those of a specific union of Schubert varieties. The third application proves that the irreducible components of parabolic Hessenberg varieties are in bijection with the irreducible components of the Steinberg variety. All three of these applications extend our geometric understanding of the three varieties at the heart of this paper, a full understanding of which is unknown even for Springer varieties, despite over forty years' worth of work.

Springer fibers are subvarieties of the flag variety parametrized by partitions; they are central objects of study in geometric representation theory. Schubert varieties are subvarieties of the flag variety that induce a well-known basis for the cohomology of the flag variety. This paper relates these two varieties combinatorially. We prove that the Betti numbers of the Springer fiber associated to a partition with at most three rows or two columns are equal to the Betti numbers of a specific union of Schubert varieties.
The Leray Dimension of a Convex Code
Convex codes were recently introduced as models for neural codes in the brain. Any convex code $\C$ has an associated minimal embedding dimension $d(\C)$, which is the minimal Euclidean space dimension such that the code can be realized by a collection of convex open sets. In this work we import tools from combinatorial commutative algebra in order to obtain better bounds on $d(\C)$ from an associated simplicial complex $Δ(\C)$. In particular, we make a connection to minimal free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner ideals, and observe that they contain topological information that provides stronger bounds on $d(\C)$. This motivates us to define the Leray dimension $d_L(\C),$ and show that it can be obtained from the Betti numbers of such a minimal free resolution. We compare $d_L(\C)$ to two previously studied dimension bounds, obtained from Helly's theorem and the simplicial homology of $Δ(\C)$. Finally, we show explicitly how $d_L(\C)$ can be computed algebraically, and illustrate this with examples.
On the binomial edge ideals of proper interval graphs
We prove several cases of the Betti number conjecture for the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ of a proper interval graph $G$ (also known as closed graph). Namely, we show that this conjecture is true for the linear strand of $J_G$, and true in general for any proper interval graph $G$ such that the regularity of $S/J_G$ equals two.
On Generalized Heawood Inequalities for Manifolds: a van Kampen--Flores-type Nonembeddability Result

The fact that the complete graph $K_5$ does not embed in the plane has been generalized in two independent directions. On the one hand, the solution of the classical Heawood problem for graphs on surfaces established that the complete graph $K_n$ embeds in a closed surface $M$ (other than the Klein bottle) if and only if $(n-3)(n-4)\leq 6b_1(M)$, where $b_1(M)$ is the first $\mathbb Z_2$-Betti number of $M$. On the other hand, van Kampen and Flores proved that the $k$-skeleton of the $n$-dimensional simplex (the higher-dimensional analogue of $K_{n+1}$) embeds in $\mathbb R^{2k}$ if and only if~$n \le 2k+1$.
Two decades ago, Kühnel conjectured that the $k$-skeleton of the $n$-simplex embeds in a compact, $(k-1)$-connected $2k$-manifold with $k$th $\mathbb Z_2$-Betti number $b_k$ only if the following generalized Heawood inequality holds: $\binom{n-k-1}{k+1} \le \binom{2k+1}{k+1}b_k$. This is a common generalization of the case of graphs on surfaces as well as the van Kampen--Flores theorem (the special cases $k=1$ and $b_k=0$, respectively), and also closely related to the theory of face numbers of triangulated manifolds.
In the spirit of Kühnel's conjecture, we prove that if the $k$-skeleton of the $n$-simplex embeds in a $2k$-manifold with $k$th $\mathbb Z_2$-Betti number $b_k$, then $n \le 2b_k\binom{2k+2}{k} + 2k + 4$. This bound is weaker than the generalized Heawood inequality, but does not require the assumption that $M$ is $(k-1)$-connected. Our results generalize to maps without $q$-covered points, in the spirit of Tverberg's theorem, for $q$ a prime power. Our proof uses a result of Volovikov about maps that satisfy a certain homological triviality condition.
