Kolmogorov Random Graphs and the Incompressibility Method

We investigate topological, combinatorial, statistical, and enumeration properties of finite graphs with high Kolmogorov complexity (almost all graphs) using the novel incompressibility method. Example results are: (i) the mean and variance of the number of (possibly overlapping) ordered labeled subgraphs of a labeled graph as a function of its randomness deficiency (how far it falls short of the maximum possible Kolmogorov complexity) and (ii) a new elementary proof for the number of unlabeled graphs.

The number of point-splitting circles
Let S be a set of 2n+1 points in the plane such that no three are collinear and no four are concyclic. A circle will be called point-splitting if it has 3 points of S on its circumference, n-1 points in its interior and n-1 in its exterior. We show the surprising property that S always has exactly n^2 point- splitting circles, and prove a more general result.
S-partitions

This note reports on the number of s-partitions of a natural number n. In an s-partition each cell has the form $2^k-1$ for some integer k. Such partitions have potential applications in cryptography, specifically in distributed computations of the form $a^n$ mod m. The main contribution of this paper is a correction to the upper bound on the number of s-partitions presented by Bhatt. We will give a precise asymptotics for the number of such partitions for a given integer n.
A generatingfunctionology approach to a problem of Wilf

Wilf posed the following problem: determine asymptotically as $n\to\infty$ the probability that a randomly chosen part size in a randomly chosen composition of n has multiplicity m. One solution of this problem was given by Hitczenko and Savage. In this paper, we study this question using the techniques of generating functions and singularity analysis.

On the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of products of ideal sheaves
In this paper we give bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of products of ideals and ideal sheaves. In particular, we show that the regularity of a product of ideals is bounded by the sum of the regularities of its factors if the corresponding schemes intersect in a finite set of points. We also show how approximations of sheaves can be used to bound the regularity of an arrangement of two-planes in projective space.

Average number of distinct part sizes in a random Carlitz composition

A composition of an integer is called Carlitz if adjacent parts are different. Several characteristics of random Carlitz compsitions have been studied recently by Knopfmacher and Prodinger. We complement their work by establishing the asymptotics of the average number of distinct part sizes in a random Carlitz composition.

Random partitions with non negative rth differences

Let $P_r(n)$ be the set of partitions of n with non negative rth differences. Let $λ$ be a partition chosen uniformly at random among the set $P_r(n)$. Let $d(λ)$ be a positive rth difference chosen uniformly at random in $λ$. The aim of this work is to show that for every $m\ge 1$, the probability that $d(λ)\ge m$ approaches $m^{-1/r}$ as $n\to\infty$. To prove this result we use bijective, asymptotic/analytic, and probabilistic combinatorics.

Expected number of distinct part sizes in a random integer composition

On the coefficients of a Fibonacci power series
We give an explicit description of the coefficients of the formal power series (1-x)(1-x^2)(1-x^3)(1-x^5)(1-x^8)(1-x^13)... In particular, we show that all the coefficients are equal to -1, 0 or 1.

New Identities of Hall-Littlewood Polynomials and Rogers-Ramanujan Type

We prove two new summation formulae of Hall-Littlewood polynomials over partitions into bounded parts and derive some new multiple $q$-identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type.
Depth-3 Arithmetic Circuits for S^2_n(X) and Extensions of the Graham-Pollack Theorem

We consider the problem of computing the second elementary symmetric polynomial S^2_n(X) using depth-three arithmetic circuits of the form "sum of products of linear forms". We consider this problem over several fields and determine EXACTLY the number of multiplication gates required. The lower bounds are proved for inhomogeneous circuits where the linear forms are allowed to have constants; the upper bounds are proved in the homogeneous model. For reals and rationals, the number of multiplication gates required is exactly n-1; in most other cases, it is \ceil{n/2}. This problem is related to the Graham-Pollack theorem in algebraic graph theory. In particular, our results answer the following question of Babai and Frankl: what is the minimum number of complete bipartite graphs required to cover each edge of a complete graph an odd number of times? We show that for infinitely many n, the answer is \ceil{n/2}.
The XXZ spin chain at $Δ=- {1/2}$: Bethe roots, symmetric functions and determinants

A number of conjectures have been given recently concerning the connection between the antiferromagnetic XXZ spin chain at $Δ= - \frac12$ and various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. Here we use the integrability of the XXZ chain to gain further insight into these developments. In doing so we obtain a number of new results using Baxter's $Q$ function for the XXZ chain for periodic, twisted and open boundary conditions. These include expressions for the elementary symmetric functions evaluated at the groundstate solution of the Bethe roots. In this approach Schur functions play a central role and enable us to derive determinant expressions which appear in certain natural double products over the Bethe roots. When evaluated these give rise to the numbers counting different symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices.

Cohen-Macaulay quotients of normal semigroup rings via irreducible resolutions

Every quotient R/I of a semigroup ring R by a radical monomial ideal I has a unique minimal injective-like resolution by direct sums of quotients of R modulo prime monomial ideals. The quotient R/I is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if every summand in cohomological degree $i$ has dimension exactly dim(R/I) - i. This Cohen-Macaulay characterization reduces to the Eagon-Reiner theorem by Alexander duality when R is a polynomial ring. The proof exploits a graded ring-theoretic generalization of the Zeeman spectral sequence, thereby also providing a combinatorial topological version for polyhedral cell complexes, involving no commutative algebra.

Projections, shellings and duality
Projection maps which appear in the theory of buildings and oriented matroids are closely related to the notion of shellability. This was first observed by Bj{ö}rner. In this paper, we give an axiomatic treatment of either concept and show their equivalence. We also axiomatize duality in this setting. As applications of these ideas, we prove a duality theorem on buildings and give a geometric interpretation of the flag $h$ vector. The former may be regarded as a $q$-analogue of the Dehn-Sommerville equations. We also briefly discuss the connection with the random walks introduced by Bidigare, Hanlon and Rockmore.
Frobenius-Schur functions

The present paper is a detailed version of math/0003031. We introduce and study a new basis in the algebra of symmetric functions. The elements of this basis are called the Frobenius-Schur functions (FS-functions, for short). Our main motivation for studying the FS-functions is the fact that they enter a formula expressing the combinatorial dimension of a skew Young diagram in terms of the Frobenius coordinates. This formula plays a key role in the asymptotic character theory of the symmetric groups. The FS-functions are inhomogeneous, and their top homogeneous components coincide with the conventional Schur functions. The FS-functions are best described in the super realization of the algebra of symmetric functions. As supersymmetric functions, the FS-functions can be characterized as a solution to an interpolation problem. Our main result is a simple determinantal formula for the transition coefficients between the FS-functions and the Schur functions. We also establish the FS analogs for a number of basic facts concerning the Schur functions: Jacobi-Trudi formula together with its dual form; combinatorial formula (expression in terms of tableaux); Giambelli formula and the Sergeev-Pragacz formula. All these results hold for a large family of bases interpolating between the FS-functions and the ordinary Schur functions.

A new partition identity coming from complex dynamics

We present a new identity involving compositions (i.e. ordered partitions of natural numbers). The Formula has its origin in complex dynamical systems and appears when counting, in the polynomial family $\{f_c:z \mapsto z^d + c \}$, periodic critical orbits with equivalent itineraries. We give two different proofs of the identity; one following the original approach in dynamics and another with purely combinatorial methods.

Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials

Our main theorems provide a single geometric setting in which polynomial representatives for Schubert classes in the integral cohomology ring of the flag manifold are determined uniquely, and have positive coefficients for geometric reasons. This results in a geometric explanation for the naturality of Schubert polynomials and their associated combinatorics. Given a permutation w in S_n, we consider a determinantal ideal I_w whose generators are certain minors in the generic n x n matrix (filled with independent variables). Using `multidegrees' as simple algebraic substitutes for torus-equivariant cohomology classes on vector spaces, our main theorems describe, for each ideal I_w: - variously graded multidegrees and Hilbert series in terms of ordinary and double Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials; - a Gröbner basis consisting of minors in the generic n x n matrix; - the Stanley-Reisner complex of the initial ideal in terms of known combinatorial diagrams associated to permutations in S_n; and - a procedure inductive on weak Bruhat order for listing the facets of this complex, thereby generating the coefficients of Schubert polynomials by a positive recursion on combinatorial diagrams. We show that the initial ideal is Cohen-Macaulay, by identifying the Stanley-Reisner complex as a special kind of ``subword complex in S_n'', which we define generally for arbitrary Coxeter groups, and prove to be shellable by giving an explicit vertex decomposition. We also prove geometrically a general positivity statement for multidegrees of subschemes.

Hamiltonian Paths in Cartesian Powers of Directed Cycles

The vertex set of the kth cartesian power of a directed cycle of length m can be naturally identified with the set of k-tuples of integers modulo m. For any two vertices v and w of this graph, it is easy to see that if there is a hamiltonian path from v to w, then the sum of the coordinates of v is congruent, modulo m, to one more than the sum of the coordinates of w. We prove the converse, unless k = 2 and m is odd.

Enumeration of Isomorphism Classes of Extensions of p-adic Fields

Let $Ω$ be an algebraic closure of ${\mathbb Q}_p$ and let $F$ be a finite extension of ${\mathbb Q}_p$ contained in $Ω$. Given positive integers $f$ and $e$, the number of extensions $K/F$ contained in $Ω$ with residue degree $f$ and ramification index $e$ was computed by Krasner. This paper is concerned with the number ${\mathfrak I}(F,f,e)$ of $F$-isomorphism classes of such extensions. We determine ${\mathfrak I}(F,f,e)$ completely when $p^2\nmid e$ and get partial results when $p^2\parallel e$. When $s$ is large, ${\mathfrak I}({\mathbb Q}_p,f,e)$ is equal to the number of isomorphism classes of finite commutative chain rings with residue field ${\mathbb F}_{p^f}$, ramification index $e$, and length $s$.

Words restricted by patterns with at most 2 distinct letters

We find generating functions for the number of words avoiding certain patterns or sets of patterns on at most 2 distinct letters and determine which of them are equally avoided. We also find the exact number of words avoiding certain patterns and provide bijective proofs for the resulting formulas.
