Babson and Steingrímsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. Claesson presented a complete solution for the number of permutations avoiding any single pattern of type $(1,2)$ or $(2,1)$. For eight of these twelve patterns the answer is given by the Bell numbers. For the remaining four the answer is given by the Catalan numbers. With respect to being equidistributed there are three different classes of patterns of type $(1,2)$ or $(2,1)$. We present a recursion for the number of permutations containing exactly one occurrence of a pattern of the first or the second of the aforementioned classes, and we also find an ordinary generating function for these numbers. We prove these results both combinatorially and analytically. Finally, we give the distribution of any pattern of the third class in the form of a continued fraction, and we also give explicit formulas for the number of permutations containing exactly $r$ occurrences of a pattern of the third class when $r\in\{1,2,3\}$.

In [BS] Babson and Steingrimsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation.
Let $f_{τ;r}(n)$ be the number of $1\mn3\mn2$-avoiding permutations on $n$ letters that contain exactly $r$ occurrences of $τ$, where $τ$ a generalized pattern on $k$ letters. Let $F_{τ;r}(x)$ and $F_τ(x,y)$ be the generating functions defined by $F_{τ;r}(x)=\sum_{n\geq0} f_{τ;r}(n)x^n$ and $F_τ(x,y)=\sum_{r\geq0}F_{τ;r}(x)y^r$. We find an explicit expression for $F_τ(x,y)$ in the form of a continued fraction for where $τ$ given as a generalized pattern; $τ=12\mn3\mn...\mn k$, $τ=21\mn3\mn...\mn k$, $τ=123... k$, or $τ=k... 321$. In particularly, we find $F_τ(x,y)$ for any $τ$ generalized pattern of length 3. This allows us to express $F_{τ;r}(x)$ via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, and continued fractions.

Recently, Babson and Steingrimsson (see [BS]) introduced generalized permutations patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation.
We study generating functions for the number of permutations on $n$ letters avoiding $1-3-2$ (or containing $1-3-2$ exactly once) and an arbitrary generalized pattern $τ$ on $k$ letters, or containing $τ$ exactly once. In several cases the generating function depends only on $k$ and is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, and generating function of Motzkin numbers.
Continued fractions, statistics, and generalized patterns
Recently, Babson and Steingrimsson (see \cite{BS}) introduced generalized permutations patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation.
Following \cite{BCS}, let $e_kπ$ (respectively; $f_kπ$) be the number of the occurrences of the generalized pattern $12\mn3\mn...\mn k$ (respectively; $21\mn3\mn...\mn k$) in $π$. In the present note, we study the distribution of the statistics $e_kπ$ and $f_kπ$ in a permutation avoiding the classical pattern $1\mn3\mn2$.
Also we present an applications, which relates the Narayana numbers, Catalan numbers, and increasing subsequences, to permutations avoiding the classical pattern $1\mn3\mn2$ according to a given statistics on $e_kπ$, or on $f_kπ$.

A {\em $1-$vertex triangulation} of an oriented compact surface $S$ of genus $g$ is an embedded graph $T\subset S$ with a unique vertex such that all connected components of $S\setminus T$ are triangles (adjacent to exactly 3 edges of $T$).
This paper gives formulas enumerating such triangulations (up to equivalence) on an oriented surface of given genus.

A combinatorial formula is derived which expresses free cumulants in terms of classical comulants. As a corollary, we give a combinatorial interpretation of free cumulants of classical distributions, notably Gaussian and Poisson distributions. The latter count connected pairings and connected set partitions respectively. The proof relies on Moebius inversion on the partition lattice.

A formula expressing free cumulants in terms of the Jacobi parameters of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials is derived. It combines Flajolet's theory of continued fractions and Lagrange inversion. For the converse we discuss Gessel-Viennot theory to express Hankel determinants in terms of various cumulants.

The problem of enumerating dimers on an M x N net embedded on non-orientable surfaces is considered. We solve both the Moebius strip and Klein bottle problems for all M and N with the aid of imaginary dimer weights. The use of imaginary weights simplifies the analysis, and as a result we obtain new compact solutions in the form of double products. The compact expressions also permit us to establish a general reciprocity theorem.

For a fixed positive integer n, let S_n denote the symmetric group of n! permutations on n symbols, and let maj(sigma) denote the major index of a permutation sigma. For positive integers k<m not greater than n and non-negative integers i and j, we give enumerative formulas for the cardinality of the set of permutations sigma in S_n with maj(sigma) congruent to i mod k and maj(sigma^(-1)) congruent to j mod m. When m divides n-1 and k divides n, we show that for all i,j, this cardinality equals (n!)/(km).

Structure of Binary Sequences
The distribution of a given sequence in the set of all sequences with n ones and m = M - n zeros are found by relating the problem to the partitions of a natural number in m natural summands, taking into account the order. The formulas obtained have many applications both in Physics and Mathematics. Examples discussed in the present paper are: non Markovian chains, partition functions of binary alloys and Ising magnets, generalized Kaplansky lemma, generalized Fibonacci numbers and a general expansion of \sum_{h=0}^{m} h^{r} {\binom{m}{h}}^{2} in terms of the Stirling numbers of second kind.
A Heawood-type result for the algebraic connectivity of graphs on surfaces
We prove that the algebraic connectivity a(G) of a graph embedded on a nonplanar surface satisfies a Heawood-type result. More precisely, it is shown that the algebraic connectivity of a surface S, defined as the supremum of a(G) over all graphs that can be embedded in S, is equal to the chromatic number of S. Furthermore, and with the possible exception of the Klein bottle, we prove that this bound is attained only in the case of the maximal complete graph that can be embedded in S. In the planar case, we show that, at least for some classes of graphs which include the set of regular graphs, a(G) is less than or equal to four. As an application of these results and techniques, we obtain a lower bound for the genus of Ramanujan graphs.
We also present some bounds for the asymptotic behaviour of a(G) for certain classes of graphs as the number of vertices goes to infinity.
The problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group

The goal of harmonic analysis on a (noncommutative) group is to decompose the most `natural' unitary representations of this group (like the regular representation) on irreducible ones. The infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity) is one of the basic examples of `big' groups whose irreducible representations depend on infinitely many parameters. Our aim is to explain what the harmonic analysis on U(infinity) consists of.
We deal with unitary representations of a reasonable class, which are in 1-1 correspondence with characters (central, positive definite, normalized functions on U(infinity)). The decomposition of any representation of this class is described by a probability measure (called spectral measure) on the space of indecomposable characters. The indecomposable characters were found by Dan Voiculescu in 1976.
The main result of the present paper consists in explicitly constructing a 4-parameter family of `natural' representations and computing their characters. We view these representations as a substitute of the nonexisting regular representation of U(infinity). We state the problem of harmonic analysis on U(infinity) as the problem of computing the spectral measures for these `natural' representations. A solution to this problem is given in the next paper math/0109194, joint with Alexei Borodin.
We also prove a few auxiliary general results. In particular, it is proved that the spectral measure of any character of U(infinity) can be approximated by a sequence of (discrete) spectral measures for the restrictions of the character to the compact unitary groups U(N). This fact is a starting point for computing spectral measures.

The infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity) is the inductive limit of growing compact unitary groups U(N). In this paper we solve a problem of harmonic analysis on U(infinity) stated in the previous paper math/0109193. The problem consists in computing spectral decomposition for a remarkable 4-parameter family of characters of U(infinity). These characters generate representations which should be viewed as analogs of nonexisting regular representation of U(infinity).
The spectral decomposition of a character of U(infinity) is described by the spectral measure which lives on an infinite-dimensional space Omega of indecomposable characters. The key idea which allows us to solve the problem is to embed Omega into the space of point configurations on the real line without 2 points. This turns the spectral measure into a stochastic point process on the real line. The main result of the paper is a complete description of the processes corresponding to our concrete family of characters. We prove that each of the processes is a determinantal point process. That is, its correlation functions have determinantal form with a certain kernel. Our kernels have a special `integrable' form and are expressed through the Gauss hypergeometric function.
In simpler situations of harmonic analysis on infinite symmetric group and harmonic analysis of unitarily invariant measures on infinite hermitian matrices similar results were obtained in our papers math/9810015, math/9904010, math-ph/0010015.
Separating Geometric Thickness from Book Thickness

Our object is a thorough analysis of the WP-Bailey tree, a recent extension of classical Bailey chains. We begin by observing how the WP-Bailey tree naturally entails a finite number of classical q-hypergeometric transformation formulas. We then show how to move beyond this closed set of results and in the process we explicate heretofore mysterious identities of D. Bressoud. Next, we use WP-Bailey pairs to provide a new proof of recent formula of A. Kirillov. Finally, we discuss the relation between our approach and that of W. Burge.

We investigate the quotient ring $R$ of the ring of formal power series $\Q[[x_1,x_2,...]]$ over the closure of the ideal generated by non-constant quasi-\break symmetric functions. We show that a Hilbert basis of the quotient is naturally indexed by Catalan paths (infinite Dyck paths). We also give a filtration of ideals related to Catalan paths from $(0,0)$ and above the line $y=x-k$. We investigate as well the quotient ring $R_n$ of polynomial ring in $n$ variables over the ideal generated by non-constant quasi-symmetric polynomials. We show that the dimension of $R_n$ is bounded above by the $n$th Catalan number.
Clairvoyant scheduling of random walks
Two infinite walks on the same finite graph are called compatible if it is possible to introduce delays into them in such a way that they never collide. Years ago, Peter Winkler asked the question: for which graphs are two independent walks compatible with positive probability. Up to now, no such graphs were found. We show in this paper that large complete graphs have this property. The question is equivalent to a certain dependent percolation with a power-law behavior: the probability that the origin is blocked at distance n but not closer decreases only polynomially fast and not, as usual, exponentially.
