We give explicit, polynomial-time computable formulas for the number of integer points in any two-dimensional rational polygon. A rational polygon is one whose vertices have rational coordinates. We find that the basic building blocks of our formulas are Dedekind-Rademacher sums, which are polynomial-time computable finite Fourier series. As a by-product we rederive a reciprocity law for these sums due to Gessel, which generalizes the reciprocity law for the classical Dedekind sums. In addition, our approach shows that Gessel's reciprocity law is a special case of the one for Dedekind-Rademacher sums, due to Rademacher.

In a previous paper (El. J. Combin. 6 (1999), R37), the author generalized Ehrhart's idea of counting lattice points in dilated rational polytopes: Given a rational polytope, that is, a polytope with rational vertices, we use its description as the intersection of halfspaces, which determine the facets of the polytope. Instead of just a single dilation factor, we allow different dilation factors for each of these facets. We proved that, if our polytope is a simplex, the lattice point counts in the interior and closure of such a vector-dilated simplex are quasipolynomials satisfying an Ehrhart-type reciprocity law. This generalizes the classical reciprocity law for rational polytopes. In the present paper we complete the picture by extending this result to general rational polytopes. As a corollary, we also generalize a reciprocity theorem of Stanley.

We verify the Upper Bound Conjecture (UBC) for a class of odd-dimensional simplicial complexes that in particular includes all Eulerian simplicial complexes with isolated singularities. The proof relies on a new invariant of simplicial complexes -- a short simplicial h-vector.
The Floyd-Warshall Algorithm, the AP and the TSP
We use admissible permutations and a variant of the Floyd-Warshall algorithm to obtain an optimal solution to the Assignment Problem. Using another variant of the F-W algorithm, we obtain an approximate solution to the Traveling Salesman Problem. We also give a sufficient condition for the approximate solution to be an optimal solution.

We construct coherent states using sequences of combinatorial numbers such as various binomial and trinomial numbers, and Bell and Catalan numbers. We show that these states satisfy the condition of the resolution of unity in a natural way. In each case the positive weight functions are given as solutions of associated Stieltjes or Hausdorff moment problems, where the moments are the combinatorial numbers.
A Tensor Product Theorem Related To Perfect Crystals

Kang et al. provided a path realization of the crystal graph of a highest weight module over a quantum affine algebra, as certain semi-infinite tensor products of a single perfect crystal. In this paper, this result is generalized to give a realization of the tensor product of several highest weight modules. The underlying building blocks of the paths are finite tensor products of several perfect crystals. The motivation for this work is an interpretation of fermionic formulas, which arise from the combinatorics of Bethe Ansatz studies of solvable lattice models, as branching functions of affine Lie algebras. It is shown that the conditions for the tensor product theorem are satisfied for coherent families of crystals previously studied by Kang, Kashiwara and Misra, and the coherent family of crystals $\{B^{k,l}\}_{l\ge 1}$ of type $A_n^{(1)}$.
The domatic number of regular and almost regular graphs
The domatic number of a graph $G$, denoted $dom(G)$, is the maximum possible cardinality of a family of disjoint sets of vertices of $G$, each set being a dominating set of $G$. It is well known that every graph without isolated vertices has $dom(G) \geq 2$. For every $k$, it is known that there are graphs with minimum degree at least $k$ and with $dom(G)=2$. In this paper we prove that this is not the case if $G$ is $k$-regular or {\em almost} $k$-regular (by ``almost'' we mean that the minimum degree is $k$ and the maximum degree is at most $Ck$ for some fixed real number $C \geq 1$). In this case we prove that $dom(G) \geq (1+o_k(1))k/(2\ln k)$. We also prove that the order of magnitude $k/\ln k$ cannot be improved. One cannot replace the constant 2 with a constant smaller than 1. The proof uses the so called {\em semi-random method} which means that combinatorial objects are generated via repeated applications of the probabilistic method; in our case iterative applications of the Lovász Local Lemma.

A lattice diagram is a finite list L=((p_1,q_1),...,(p_n,q_n) of lattice cells. The corresponding lattice diagram determinant is Δ_L(X;Y)=\det \| x_i^{p_j}y_i^{q_j} \|. These lattice diagram determinants are crucial in the study of the so-called ``n! conjecture'' of A. Garsia and M. Haiman. The space M_L is the space spanned by all partial derivatives of Δ_L(X;Y). The ``shift operators'', which are particular partial symmetric derivative operators are very useful in the comprehension of the structure of the M_L spaces. We describe here how a Schur function partial derivative operator acts on lattice diagrams with distinct cells in the positive quadrant.
The similarity metric
A new class of distances appropriate for measuring similarity relations between sequences, say one type of similarity per distance, is studied. We propose a new ``normalized information distance'', based on the noncomputable notion of Kolmogorov complexity, and show that it is in this class and it minorizes every computable distance in the class (that is, it is universal in that it discovers all computable similarities). We demonstrate that it is a metric and call it the {\em similarity metric}. This theory forms the foundation for a new practical tool. To evidence generality and robustness we give two distinctive applications in widely divergent areas using standard compression programs like gzip and GenCompress. First, we compare whole mitochondrial genomes and infer their evolutionary history. This results in a first completely automatic computed whole mitochondrial phylogeny tree. Secondly, we fully automatically compute the language tree of 52 different languages.

We study the phase transition in the honeycomb dimer model (equivalently, monotone non-intersecting lattice path model). At the critical point the system has a strong long-range dependence; in particular, periodic boundary conditions give rise to a ``resonance'' phenomenon, where the partition function and other properties of the system depend sensitively on the shape of the domain.
Resonance Category

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce a new category, which we call a resonance category, whose combinatorics reflect that of canonical stratifications of $n$-fold symmetric smash products. The study of the stratifications can then be abstracted to the study of functors satisfying certain sets of axioms, which we name resonance functors.
One frequently studied stratification is that of the set of all polynomials of degree $n$, defined by fixing the allowed multiplicities of roots. We apply our abstract combinatorial framework, in particular, the notion of direct product of relative resonances, to study the Arnold problem of computing the algebro-topological invariants of these strata.

We obtain general identities for the product of two Schur functions in the case where one of the functions is indexed by a rectangular partition, and give their t-analogs using vertex operators. We study subspaces forming a filtration for the symmetric function space that lends itself to generalizing the theory of Schur functions and also provides a convenient environment for studying the Macdonald polynomials. We use our identities to prove that the vertex operators leave such subspaces invariant. We finish by showing that these operators act simply on the k-Schur functions, thus leading to a concept of irreducibility for these functions.

We consider a filtration of the symmetric function space given by $Λ^{(k)}_t$, the linear span of Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by partitions whose first part is not larger than $k$. We introduce symmetric functions called the $k$-Schur functions, providing an analog for the Schur functions in the subspaces $Λ^{(k)}_t$. We prove several properties for the $k$-Schur functions including that they form a basis for these subspaces that reduces to the Schur basis when $k$ is large. We also show that the connection coefficients for the $k$-Schur function basis with the Macdonald polynomials belonging to $Λ^{(k)}_t$ are polynomials in $q$ and $t$ with integral coefficients. In fact, we conjecture that these integral coefficients are actually positive, and give several other conjectures generalizing Schur function theory.

Let P be a d-dimensional lattice polytope. We show that there exists a natural number c_d, only depending on d, such that the multiples cP have a unimodular cover for every natural number c >= c_d. Actually, a subexponential upper bound for c_d is provided, together with an analogous result for unimodular covers of rational cones.

In this paper we study the topology of the strata, indexed by number partitions $λ$, in the natural stratification of the space of monic hyperbolic polynomials of degree $n$. We prove stabilization theorems for removing an independent block or an independent relation in $λ$. We also prove contractibility of the one-point compactifications of the strata indexed by a large class of number partitions, including $λ=(k^m,1^r)$, for $m\geq 2$. Furthermore, we study the maps between the homology groups of the strata, induced by imposing additional relations (resonances) on the number partition $λ$, or by merging some of the blocks of $λ$.

We study rational homology groups of one-point compactifications of spaces of complex monic polynomials with multiple roots. These spaces are indexed by number partitions. A standard reformulation in terms of quotients of orbit arrangements reduces the problem to studying certain triangulated spaces $X_{λ,μ}$.
We present a combinatorial description of the cell structure of $X_{λ,μ}$ using the language of marked forests. As applications we obtain a new proof of a theorem of Arnold and a counterexample to a conjecture of Sundaram and Welker, along with a few other smaller results.

We computed the number of facets and of extreme rays, their adjacencies, and incidences of the cones QMET_n and OMCUT_n for n=3, 4, 5 (see Table 1) and, partially for n=6. Self-Dual Symmetric Polynomials and Conformal Partitions
A conformal partition function ${\cal P}_n^m(s)$, which arose in the theory of Diophantine equations supplemented with additional restrictions, is concerned with {\it self-dual symmetric polynomials} -- reciprocal ${\sf R}^{\{m\}}_ {S_n}$ and skew-reciprocal ${\sf S}^{\{m\}}_{S_n}$ algebraic polynomials based on the polynomial invariants of the symmetric group $S_n$. These polynomials form an infinite commutative semigroup. Real solutions $λ_n(x_i)$ of corresponding algebraic Eqns have many important properties: homogeneity of 1-st order, duality upon the action of the conformal group ${\sf W}$, inverting both function $λ_n$ and the variables $x_i$, compatibility with trivial solution, {\it etc}. Making use of the relationship between Gaussian generating function for conformal partitions and Molien generating function for usual restricted partitions we derived the analytic expressions for ${\cal P}_n^m(s)$. The unimodality indices for the reciprocal and skew-reciprocal equations were found. The existence of algebraic functions $λ_n(x_i)$ invariant upon the action of both the finite group $G\subset S_n$ and conformal group ${\sf W}$ is discussed.

We show that a finite graded lattice of rank n is supersolvable if and only if it has an EL-labeling where the labels along any maximal chain form a permutation. We call such a labeling an S_n EL-labeling and we consider finite graded posets of rank n with unique top and bottom elements that have an S_n EL-labeling. We describe a type A 0-Hecke algebra action on the maximal chains of such posets. This action is local and gives a representation of these Hecke algebras whose character has characteristic that is closely related to Ehrenborg's flag quasi-symmetric function. We ask what other classes of posets have such an action and in particular we show that finite graded lattices of rank n have such an action if and only if they have an S_n EL-labeling.

We obtain sharp bounds for the number of n--cycles in a finite graph as a function of the number of edges, and prove that the complete graph is optimal in more ways than could be imagined. We prove sharp estimates on both the sum of k-th powers of the coordinates and the Lk norm subject to the constraints that the sum of squares of the coordinates is fixed, and that the sum of the coordinates vanishes.
