Submultiplicative Polynomials in Combinatorics
For normalized sequences $\left(g(n)\right)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ we consider recursively defined polynomials $P_n^g(x)$. In this paper we study their submultiplicative property, viewed as a Bessenrodt--Ono type inequality for the partition function, and provide an effective criterion for establishing it.
Any Proof of Polynomial Hirsch Must be Completely Incoherent
In 1992, Billera and Sturmfels introduced coherent monotone paths on polytopes as part of their description of the fiber polytope construction, and later in 1994 showed with Kapranov that these coherent monotone paths capture the topology of the space of all monotone paths, paths from a minimum to a maximum, in the directed graph of a polytope with orientation induced by a linear function. Those results motivate the following analog of the polynomial Hirsch conjecture: Does there always exist a coherent monotone path of polynomial length on a polytope for any choice of orientation induced by a linear function? We show this is not the case by exhibiting a family of polytopes and corresponding linear functions for which every coherent monotone path is exponentially long. As applications, we strengthen longstanding results pertaining to lower bounds for the shadow simplex method, geometric transversals in discrete geometry, and parametric linear optimization.
The chain replacement of a poset flow
We introduce the chain replacement of a poset flow: it is obtained by considering the simplicial nerves of the posets of strictly increasing chains in the given poset, ordered by refinement. It maps finite posets to q-cofibrant flows and inclusions of finite posets to q-cofibrations. Using the combinatorial properties of the chain replacement, we prove that pushouts along the chain replacement of an order-reflecting inclusion of finite posets preserve spaces of execution paths. By introducing the Hurewicz model structure on flows (or H-model structure), we deduce the same property for any q-cofibrant replacement of an order-reflecting inclusion of finite posets.
Normal ordering in the $(p,q)$-deformed generalized Weyl algebra. III: The binomial formula
We study the $(p, q)$-deformed generalized Weyl algebra generated by variables $X, Y$ and $Z_p$ satisfying the $(p, q)$-commutation relations $XY-qYX=h Y^sZ_{p}, XZ_p=pZ_pX$, and $Z_pY=pYZ_p$, with $s\in \mathbb{N}_0$. Within this framework, we investigate the noncommutative binomial formula $(X+Y)^n$ and related identities. In particular, we show how the associated normal ordering coefficients can be expressed in terms of $(p,q)$-deformed $s$-rook numbers. We treat several special cases explicitly, recovering known results from literature as well as deriving new ones.
From roots to paths: graphs simultaneously irregular with respect to rooted and ordinary paths
Let $P_n$ denote a path on $n$ vertices. A simple finite graph $G$ is called $P_n$-irregular if any two distinct vertices of $G$ belong to a different number of subgraphs of $G$ isomorphic to $P_n$. Alternatively, for a fixed vertex $r$ of $P_n$ (the root), $G$ is called $(P_n)_r$-irregular if any two distinct vertices of $G$ act as the root $r$ in a different number of subgraphs of $G$ isomorphic to $P_n$. This paper proves that for each integer $k \geq 4$, there exists an infinite family of graphs that are simultaneously $P_n$-irregular and $(P_n)_r$-irregular for every integer $n$ satisfying $4 \leq n \leq k$ and every root $r$ of $P_n$. For the path $P_3$, we observe that no nontrivial $(P_3)_r$-irregular graphs exist if $r$ is the central vertex. In contrast, if $r$ is an end-vertex of $P_3$, an infinite collection of graphs is constructed that are both $P_3$-irregular and $(P_3)_r$-irregular. In particular, these results confirm the Strong Conjecture about $F$-irregular graphs for the case where $F$ is a path $P_n$.
Computing Tools for Translation-Invariant Total Orders
We introduce TITO_Explore, a software package for representing and computing with Translation-Invariant Total Orders (TITOs). We define a canonical window notation for TITOs and design and implement algorithms for several computational tasks involving them. The package normalizes the window notation of a given TITO into its canonical form, computes its inversion set, compares the weak order between two TITOs, and computes the join of two specified TITOs. Our weak order comparison algorithm operates by partitioning the inversion sets into disjoint subsets, thereby breaking down the comparison problem into evaluations of paired subsets. The join algorithm uses an edge-weighted directed graph to represent inversions and converts the problem of finding the join into a weighted path problem in the graph.
Improving Upper Bounds for the Maximum Clique Problem using Reduction Rules
We study the interaction between reduction rules and upper-bound functions for the Maximum Clique Problem (MCP). We show how MCP upper-bound functions can strengthen classical core and truss reductions by replacing local size conditions with upper-bound tests. This leads to the \((k,ω^u)\)-core, the \((k,ω^u)\)-truss, and the more general \((k,d,ω^u)\)-truss, where the parameter \(d\) controls the trade-off between stronger reductions and additional computational cost. For each of these notions, we prove clique-preservation properties, correctness of the corresponding peeling algorithm, and running-time bounds. Based on these reductions, we introduce a general framework for improving upper-bound values for MCP. We give two concrete instantiations of the framework: one that uses only the combined truss and core reductions, and one that combines the truss and core reductions with repeated applications of structions. Computational experiments on 73 benchmark graphs show that the proposed reductions can substantially improve several standard upper-bound functions and that combining multiple reduction methods can be beneficial in practice. In particular, the combination of structions, truss and core reductions with a DSatur-based bound often reached SDP-level upper-bound values faster than direct SDP computation; on the tested graphs with edge density below \(0.7\), it did so in every case. Using the truss and core reduction with the Lovász theta upper-bound function, we also improve the previously best certified integer upper-bound values for three difficult DIMACS instances whose exact clique numbers are not known. In particular, we improve upper-bound values for graph
\texttt{C500.9} from 83 to 73, for graph \texttt{C1000.9} from 122 to 115, and for graph \texttt{C2000.9} from 177 to 168.
On the maximum size of $B_3$-free families
A family $\mathcal{G}$ of sets is a weak copy of the poset $(P,\leqslant)$ if there exists a bijection $ι:P\rightarrow \mathcal{G}$ with $ι(p)\subset ι(q)$ whenever $p\leqslant q$. $\mathcal{G}$ is a strong copy if $ι(p)\subset ι(q)$ if and only if $p\leqslant q$ holds. A family is weak (strong) $P$-free if it does not contain any weak (strong) copies of $P$. For a poset $P$, let $e(P)$ ($e^*(P)$) denote the most number of middle layers of $2^{[n]}$ that does not contain a weak (strong) copy of $P$. Ellis, Ivan, and Leader were the first to show the existence of posets $P$ for which there exists a positive real $\varepsilon_P$ such that $La(n,P)\ge (e(P)+\varepsilon_P)\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2}$ and $La^*(n,P)\ge (e^*(P)+\varepsilon_P)\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2}$ holds, where $La(n,P)$ ($La^*(n,P)$) denotes the maximum size of a weak (strong) $P$-free family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$. More precisely, they showed that $P=B_d$ are such posets for all $d\ge 4$, where $B_d$ is the Boolean lattice ordered by inclusion. Very recently, Tompkins showed that the diamond $B_2$ is also such a poset. In this short note, we apply his method to settle the case of the last Boolean poset $B_3$. We show that there exists a positive $\varepsilon$ such that $$La^*(n,B_3)\ge La(n,B_3)\ge La(n,D_6)\ge (3+\varepsilon)\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor},$$
where $D_6$ is the poset on eight elements $a<b_1,\dots,b_6<c$.
All simplices exhibit canonical Ramsey property
We prove that all nondegenerate simplices have the canonical Ramsey property, thereby resolving a central open problem in canonical Euclidean Ramsey theory and providing a canonical counterpart to the celebrated simplex Ramsey theorem of Frankl and Rödl~[JAMS, 1990].
Quantum Latin Squares of Order Six with Cardinalities Nineteen, Twenty-One, and Twenty-Three
We give three explicit quantum Latin squares of order $6$ with cardinalities $19$, $21$, and $23$, where vectors differing only by a global phase are counted as identical. The first two examples arise from normalized Schur products of columns of complex Hadamard matrices. For cardinality $19$, a Butson-type matrix over eighth roots of unity has the unique nontrivial coincidence $v_{01}=v_{25}=v_{34}$. For cardinality $21$, an explicit member of Karlsson's three-parameter family has $21$ pairwise inequivalent unordered Schur products. To exceed the symmetric Schur-product bound, we give a third, direct-sum construction based on the decomposition $\C^6=\C^4\oplusC^2$. It uses nineteen distinct rays in the four-dimensional summand and four rays in the two-dimensional summand, arranged so that every row and column is an orthonormal basis, yielding cardinality $23$. Together with our earlier constructions of cardinalities $13$, $15$, and $17$ and previously known order-six examples, these results determine every cardinality in the interval $6\leq c\leq24$, with the sole exception of the impossible value $c=7$.
Magnitude homology of tope graphs
We completely determine the magnitude homology of tope graphs of real hyperplane arrangements. Their ranks can be described as the Hilbert functions of the Stanley--Reisner rings of certain simplicial complexes naturally associated with the arrangements. For Coxeter arrangements, this gives a computation of the magnitude homology of the Cayley graph of the corresponding Coxeter group. We also prove the homological reciprocity for central arrangements conjectured by Koizumi--Liu. The proof combines poset combinatorics, the Edelman--Walker theorem, and Alexander duality.
Decision problem for Hamilton $2$-cycles in $4$-graphs
A $4$-uniform $2$-cycle in a $4$-uniform hypergraph of length $t$ is a cyclic ordering of $2t$ vertices $v_1v_2\cdots v_{2t}v_1$ such that $v_{2i+1}v_{2i+2}v_{2i+3}v_{2i+4}$ are edges for $0\le i\le t-1$ while the addition is modulo $2t$.
For every $γ>0$ and large $n$, we characterize the $n$-vertex $4$-uniform hypergraphs such that every triple of vertices is contained in at least $(1/3+γ)n$ edges and admits a Hamilton $2$-cycle. Up to the error term $γn$, the assumption on the minimum codegree is best possible and verifies a conjecture of Garbe and Mycroft. As a consequence, this gives a polynomial-time algorithm that decides whether an $n$-vertex $4$-uniform hypergraph with minimum codegree $(1/3+γ)n$ contains a Hamilton $2$-cycle. This stands as a steep contrast to the graph case where such a hardness gap has size $o(n)$.
Rational values and non-principality for $\ell$-degree Turán densities of hypergraphs
Let $k>\ell\ge 1$ be integers. For a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-uniform hypergraphs ($k$-graphs), the $\ell$-degree Turán density $γ^{(k)}_\ell(\mathcal{F})$ of $\mathcal{F}$ is defined as the asymptotic maximum of the normalized minimum $\ell$-degree over all $\mathcal{F}$-free $k$-graphs.
In this paper, we prove that for all $k>\ell>k/2$, every rational number $α\in[0,1)$ can be realized as the $\ell$-degree Turán density $γ^{(k)}_\ell(\mathcal{F})$ for some finite family $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-graphs. Furthermore, for any $k>\ell\ge 1$, we construct an explicit infinite sequence of values realized by single forbidden $k$-graphs: for each integer $q\ge2$, there exists a $k$-graph $F$ such that $γ^{(k)}_\ell(F)=1-q^{\ell-k}$. We also establish a strengthened non-principality property for $\ell$-degree Turán densities: for all $k>\ell>1$, there exist two $k$-graphs $F_1$ and $F_2$ satisfying $0< γ^{(k)}_{\ell}(\{F_1,F_2\})<\min\{ γ^{(k)}_\ell(F_1),γ^{(k)}_\ell(F_2)\}$.
From weighted paraboloid restriction to $k$-stars and distance graphs
In this paper, we study pinned $k$-star distance sets associated to compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$. For pins $x_1,\dots,x_k\in E$, the pinned $k$-star distance set is \[ Δ_{x_1,\dots,x_k}^{k\text{-star}}(E) = \{(|x_1-x|,\dots,|x_k-x|):x\in E\}\subset\mathbb{R}^k. \]
We obtain improved Hausdorff-dimension thresholds on $E$ guaranteeing that pinned $k$-star distance sets have positive $k$-dimensional Lebesgue measure. The main analytic input is a reformulation of the connection, first observed in \cite{IPPS22}, between $k$-stars in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and pinned dot products on the paraboloid in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. In our framework, $L^2(\mathbb{R}^k)$ estimates for the densities of pinned $k$-star distance measures are reduced to a weighted Fourier extension estimate for the paraboloid whose weight is defined explicitly in terms of Frostman measures on $E$. For $1\leq k<n$, this yields the threshold \[\dim(E)>α_{+}(n,k):=\frac{n^2+nk+k}{2n+1}=\frac{n+k-1}{2}+\frac14 +\frac{2k+1}{4(2n+1)}.\]
Using the graph-building machinery of \cite{BFOPR2026}, our positive-measure results for $k$-stars can be used as building blocks for finite distance graph configurations with prescribed pins. As a consequence, we improve the best-known positive-measure thresholds for pinned $k$-simplices in every dimension $n\geq 3$ and for necklace graphs (cycles) in every dimension $n\geq 3$.
We further prove nonempty interior results for $k$-stars. In the special case $k=1$, corresponding to the pinned nonempty interior of the distance set $Δ_{x}(E)=\{|x-y|\colon y\in E\}$, we use a sharper argument to improve the pinned nonempty-interior thresholds of \cite{BFOP2026} in all dimensions $n\geq 4$.
Sign Patterns in a Two Colored Partition Companion series
We study two closely related questions arising from the recent work of Andrews and El Bachraoui on the two-color partition series \[ S_1(q)=\sum_{n\ge0}s_1(n)q^n=\sum_{a\ge0}q^a(-q^{a+1};q)_\infty^2 \] and its odd companion, denoted by $T_o(q)$. First, for the eta-normalized companion \[ C(q)=(q;q)_\infty T_o(q)=\sum_{n\ge0}c(n)q^n, \] we prove a strong form of the Andrews--El Bachraoui sign conjecture that $\limsup c(n)=+\infty$ and $\liminf c(n)=-\infty$. Second, we construct an involution using the Franklin-type involution of Chen and Liu to combinatorially explain Andrews--El Bachraoui congruence for $s_1(n)$ modulo 4.
Characteristic Independence of Betti Numbers of Monomial Ideals in Five Variables
Alesandroni proved that Betti numbers of monomial ideals in at most four variables are independent of the characteristic of the base field, while Peeva exhibited characteristic-dependent Betti numbers in six variables. We prove that the five-variable case is characteristic-independent. More precisely, if $S=k[x_1,\ldots,x_5]$ and $M\subseteq S$ is a monomial ideal, then the multigraded, graded, and total Betti numbers of $S/M$ are independent of $\operatorname{char}(k)$. The proof reduces arbitrary monomial ideals to squarefree twin ideals and then applies Hochster's formula. The topological input is that simplicial complexes on at most five vertices have torsion-free integral homology. Peeva's example arising from the six-vertex triangulation of $\mathbb{RP}^2$ shows that the bound is sharp. We also record a computation of the graded Betti tables of squarefree monomial ideals in five variables up to relabeling.
Combinatorial identities derived from explicit formulas of Gauss hypergeometric functions
In present paper, with the help of the Faà di Bruno formula and identities of partial Bell polynomials, the author establishes explicit formulas of the Gauss hypergeometric functions \begin{gather*} {\,}_2F_1\biggl(\frac{1-n}{2},\frac{2-n}{2};\frac{3}{2}-m;z^2\biggr), \quad {\,}_2F_1\biggl(-\frac{n}{2},\frac{1-n}{2};\frac{1}{2}-m;z^2\biggr),\\ {\,}_2F_1\biggl(a,a+\frac{1}{2};\frac{3}{2}-m;z^2\biggr), \quad {\,}_2F_1\biggl(a,a+\frac{1}{2};\frac{1}{2}-m;z^2\biggr) \end{gather*} for $m,n\in\mathbb{N}$ and $a\in\mathbb{C}$, and then derives two combinatorial identities \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^{m}\frac{2^k}{k!} \binom{2m-2k}{m-k} \sum_{\ell=0}^{k} \frac{(-1)^\ell}{2^\ell} \frac{(2k-2\ell-1)!!}{(n-\ell)!} \binom{2k-\ell-1}{\ell-1} =\frac{1}{n!}\binom{2m-n}{m} \end{equation*} and \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=1}^{m}\frac{1}{(k!)^2}\binom{2m-2k}{m-k} \sum_{\ell=1}^{k} \binom{k}{\ell}\ell(2k-\ell-1)! (2a)_\ell =\binom{2m+2a}{m}, \end{equation*} where $m\in\mathbb{N}_0$, $n\in\mathbb{Z}$, and $a\in\mathbb{C}$. These newly-established identities generalize the nice and beautiful combinatorial identity \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^{n} \frac{2^{k}}{k!}\binom{2n-2k}{n-k} \sum_{j=0}^{k}\frac{(-1)^{j}}{2^j} \frac{(2k-2j-1)!!}{(n-j)!} \binom{2k-j-1}{j-1} =\frac{1}{n!}, \quad n\in\mathbb{N}_0, \end{equation*} which was obtained in Theorem 4 of the recent paper "F. Qi, C.-Y. He, and D. Lim, Explicit formulas of two Gauss hypergeometric functions and several combinatorial identities, Discrete Appl. Math., Vol. 393 (2026), 215--229. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dam.2026.06.023".
Extended generalized permutahedra, and cointeracting bialgebras
A Hopf monoid structure on extended generalized permutahedra (EGP) was recently introduced by M.Aguiar and F.Ardila. We investigate the existence of a cointeracting bialgebra structure on EGP's. We show that a suitable notion of cointeraction exists, not in the classical comodule sense, but via the framework of measuring algebras. The comodule-type map assigns to each polyhedron the sum of pairs of face and tangent cone at the face. EGP's and affine cone EGP's form the cointeracting bimonoids in species with EGP as a third measuring structure.
EGP's are in bijection to extended submodular functions. For an EGP, we also describe explicitly the submodular functions of its faces and tangent cones. The braid fan and its relation to preorders play a key role in this description.
The planar Hopf algebra of noncommutative multi-indices
We construct the planar Linares--Otto--Tempelmayr Hopf algebra, thereby filling the missing planar noncommutative multi-index corner in the square relating the LOT, Butcher--Connes--Kreimer, and Munthe-Kaas--Wright Hopf algebras. Starting from the free associative algebra on a weighted alphabet $\mathbb Z_{\ge -1}\times A$, we define an insertion-type product yielding a post-Lie structure on the Lie algebra generated by the linear span $V(A)$ of weight $-1$ monomials whose proper left prefixes all have nonnegative weight, and the Guin--Oudom construction then produces the planar LOT Hopf algebra. We introduce a planar tree fertility map from decorated planar rooted trees to monomials in $V(A)$, prove that it is a linear isomorphism, and obtain a natural Hopf algebra isomorphism with the Munthe-Kaas--Wright Hopf algebra. We further derive an explicit coproduct formula in terms of left-admissible cuts, establish the extraction-contraction coproduct, and construct a word symmetrization operator compatible with the classical tree symmetrization operator.
Edge transmission irregular graphs
The transmission of a vertex $v$ in a connected graph $G$ is the sum of distances from $v$ to all vertices in $G$. A transmission irregular (TI) graph is a connected graph in which any two distinct vertices have different transmissions. We extend the concept of transmission to edges by defining the transmission of an edge as the sum of the transmissions of its two endpoints. A connected graph can now be called edge transmission irregular (ETI) if any two distinct edges have different transmissions. We show that almost all graphs are not ETI and then investigate several related order realizability problems involving chemical ETI graphs. In particular, we prove that for every $n \ge 15$, there exists a subcubic tree of order $n$ that is both TI and ETI.
