Coordinate-extension degrees and layered $k$-uniform hypergraphs
Let $\Palt=(\C,\T)$ be a $k$-palette. For $0\le t\le k-1$, its $t$th coordinate-extension degree is the minimum, over every choice of $t$ coordinates and every assignment of colors to them, of the proportion of assignments to the remaining $k-t$ coordinates that complete the fixed colors to an admissible $k$-tuple. For a $k$-graph $F$, we define $π_t^{\ext}(F)$ as the supremum of this degree over all palettes not admitted by $F$. We prove that \[ π_t^{\ext}(F)=0 \quad\text{if and only if}\quad F\text{ is }t\text{-layered}. \] We also relate $t$-layeredness to vanishing orders, min-layeredness, max-layeredness, and layeredness. These results recover and extend previous characterizations of Reiher, Rödl, and Schacht and of Lamaison, and answer a question of Lamaison for $3$-graphs. At $t=0$, the parameter $π_0^{\ext}(F)$ is the $(k-2)$-uniform Turán density $π_{k-2}(F)$. For every $k\ge3$ and $r\ge2$, we construct a finite $k$-graph $F_{k,r}$ with \( π_{k-2}(F_{k,r})=2(r-1)/rk^k. \) Thus $2/k^k$ is an accumulation point for single forbidden $k$-graphs. We also show that the least density of a $k$-graph that fails condition $\Sp$ of Lin, Wang and Zhou is $4/(3k^k)$. Finally, for every admissible matching of size $m$, we construct a $k$-graph that satisfies $\Sp$ for every coordinate pair, has no vanishing order, and has density $2^m/k^k$. This disproves a conjecture of Lin, Wang and Zhou for every $k\ge3$.
Polynomial Compressibility and Forbidden Oriented Forests
For a nonempty acyclic oriented graph $H$, let $p(H)$ be the order of a longest directed path and let $τ(H)$ be the least positive integer $n$ such that $H$ admits a homomorphism to every tournament of order $n$. For all $p\ge3$ and $g\ge1$, we construct a connected acyclic oriented graph $H$ with underlying girth greater than $g$, absolute and relative oriented clique numbers equal to three, and \[
p(H)=p,\qquad τ(H)=r_{\mathrm{tr}}(p), \] where $r_{\mathrm{tr}}(p)=2^{Θ(p)}$ is the tournament Ramsey number for a transitive $p$-vertex tournament. This disproves the conjectured polynomial bounds under bounded absolute or relative oriented clique number. It also shows that a forbidden graph can yield a polynomially $τ$-bounded class only if its underlying graph is a forest. For fixed $g$, the least order of these examples is bounded by a polynomial in $p$. A separate construction gives maximum in- and outdegree $O(p^2)$, uniformly in $g$. For $p=4$, the least order is $2^{Θ(g)}$. We also establish polynomial $τ$-boundedness for every orientation of the two four-vertex trees. The pure-claw case follows from the known $O(p^4)$ bound. We obtain the bound $2p-2$ for mixed claws and one-turn orientations of $P_4$ when $p\ge2$, and bounds $4$ and $3p-2$ for the directed and alternating orientations of $P_4$, respectively. In the alternating case, $τ(H)=p(H)$ when the underlying graph is triangle-free.
Rational values and non-principality for $\ell$-degree Turán densities of hypergraphs
Let $k>\ell\ge 1$ be integers. For a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-uniform hypergraphs ($k$-graphs), the $\ell$-degree Turán density $γ^{(k)}_\ell(\mathcal{F})$ of $\mathcal{F}$ is defined as the asymptotic maximum of the normalized minimum $\ell$-degree over all $\mathcal{F}$-free $k$-graphs.
In this paper, we prove that for all $k>\ell>k/2$, every rational number $α\in[0,1)$ can be realized as the $\ell$-degree Turán density $γ^{(k)}_\ell(\mathcal{F})$ for some finite family $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-graphs. Furthermore, for any $k>\ell\ge 1$, we construct an explicit infinite sequence of values realized by single forbidden $k$-graphs: for each integer $q\ge2$, there exists a $k$-graph $F$ such that $γ^{(k)}_\ell(F)=1-q^{\ell-k}$. We also establish a strengthened non-principality property for $\ell$-degree Turán densities: for all $k>\ell>1$, there exist two $k$-graphs $F_1$ and $F_2$ satisfying $0< γ^{(k)}_{\ell}(\{F_1,F_2\})<\min\{ γ^{(k)}_\ell(F_1),γ^{(k)}_\ell(F_2)\}$.
