The jaggedness of an order ideal I in a poset P is the number of maximal elements in I plus the number of minimal elements of P not in I. A probability distribution on the set of order ideals of P is toggle-symmetric if for every p in P, the probability that p is maximal in I equals the probability that p is minimal not in I. In this paper, we prove a formula for the expected jaggedness of an order ideal of P under any toggle-symmetric probability distribution when P is the poset of boxes in a skew Young diagram. Our result extends the main combinatorial theorem of Chan-López-Pflueger-Teixidor, who used an expected jaggedness computation as a key ingredient to prove an algebro-geometric formula; and it has applications to homomesies, in the sense of Propp-Roby, of the antichain cardinality statistic for order ideals in partially ordered sets.

Jack characters are a one-parameter deformation of the characters of the symmetric groups; a deformation given by the coefficients in the expansion of Jack symmetric functions in the basis of power-sum symmetric functions. We study Jack characters from the viewpoint of the asymptotic representation theory. In particular, we give explicit formulas for their asymptotically top-degree part, in terms of bicolored oriented maps with an arbitrary face structure. We also study their multiplicative structure and their structure constants and we prove that they fulfill approximate factorization property, a convenient tool for proving Gaussianity of fluctuations of random Young diagrams.
LGV proof of a determinantal theorem for TASEP probabilities
The Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP) is a non-equilibrium particle model on a finite one-dimensional lattice with open boundaries. In our earlier paper, we obtained a determinantal formula that computes the steady state probabilities of this process by the enumeration of "Catalan alternative tableaux", which are certain fillings of Young diagrams. Here, we present a new, more illuminating bijective proof of this determinantal formula using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot Lemma.
Towards a q-analogue of the Harer-Zagier formula via rook placements
In 1986 Harer and Zagier computed a certain matrix integral to determine an influential closed-form formula for the number of (orientable) one-face maps on n vertices colored from N colors. Kerov (1997) provided a proof which computed the same matrix integral differently, which gave an interpretation of these numbers as also counting the number of placements of non-attacking rooks on Young diagrams. Bernardi (2010) provided a bijective proof of this formula by putting one-face maps in bijection with tree-rooted maps, which are orientable maps with a designated spanning tree. In the first part of the paper, we explore the connection between these rook placements and tree-rooted maps by developing a bijection between these objects. Rook placements on Young diagrams have a q-analogue due to Garsia and Remmel (1986). In the second part of the paper, we propose a statistic on rook placements that leads to a conjectured identity which is a q-analogue of part of the Harer-Zagier formula. This identity is also expressed in terms of moments of orthogonal polynomials which are rescaling of q-Hermite polynomials. We then use these moments to give a recurrence for the proposed q-analogue.

We show that the order on probability measures, inherited from the dominance order on the Young diagrams, is preserved under natural maps reducing the number of boxes in a diagram by $1$. As a corollary we give a new proof of the Thoma theorem on the structure of characters of the infinite symmetric group.
We present several conjectures generalizing our result. One of them (if it is true) would imply the Kerov's conjecture on the classification of all homomorphisms from the algebra of symmetric functions into $\mathbb R$ which are non-negative on Hall--Littlewood polynomials.

Stanley considered suitably normalized characters of the symmetric groups on Young diagrams having a special geometric form, namely multirectangular Young diagrams. He proved that the character is a polynomial in the lengths of the sides of the rectangles forming the Young diagram and he conjectured an explicit form of this polynomial. This Stanley character polynomial and this way of parametrizing the set of Young diagrams turned out to be a powerful tool for several problems of the dual combinatorics of the characters of the symmetric groups and asymptotic representation theory, in particular to Kerov polynomials.

We consider the multivariate generating series $F_P$ of $P$-partitions in infinitely many variables $x_1, x_2 , \dots$. For some family of ranked posets $P$, it is natural to consider an analog $N_P$ with two infinite alphabets. When we collapse these two alphabets, we trivially recover $F_P$. Our main result is the converse, that is, the explicit construction of a map sending back $F_P$ onto $N_P$. We also give a noncommutative analog of the latter. An application is the construction of a basis of WQSym with a non-negative multiplication table, which lifts a basis of QSym introduced by K. Luoto.

We show that certain topologically defined uniform spanning tree probabilities for graphs embedded in an annulus can be computed as linear combinations of Pfaffians of matrices involving the line-bundle Green's function, where the coefficients count cover-inclusive Dyck tilings of skew Young diagrams.

Jack polynomials generalize several classical families of symmetric polynomials, including Schur polynomials, and are further generalized by Macdonald polynomials. In 1989, Richard Stanley conjectured that if the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient for a triple of Schur polynomials is 1, then the corresponding coefficient for Jack polynomials can be expressed as a product of weighted hooks of the Young diagrams associated to the partitions indexing the coefficient. We prove a special case of this conjecture in which the partitions indexing the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient have at most 3 parts. We also show that this result extends to Macdonald polynomials.
Multi-cores, posets, and lattice paths

Hooks are prominent in representation theory (of symmetric groups) and they play a role in number theory (via cranks associated to Ramanujan's congruences). A partition of a positive integer $n$ has a Young diagram representation. To each cell in the diagram there is an associated statistic called hook length, and if a number $t$ is absent from the diagram then the partition is called a $t$-core. A partition is an $(s,t)$-core if it is both an $s$- and a $t$-core. Since the work of Anderson on $(s,t)$-cores, the topic has received a growing attention. This paper expands the discussion to multiple-cores. More precisely, we explore $(s,s+1,\dots,s+k)$-core partitions much in the spirit of a recent paper by Stanley and Zanello. In fact, our results exploit connections between three combinatorial objects: multi-cores, posets and lattice paths (with a novel generalization of Dyck paths). Additional results and conjectures are scattered throughout the paper. For example, one of these statements implies a curious symmetry for twin-prime $(s,s+2)$-core partitions.

We consider sequences of degrees of ordinary irreducible $S_n$-characters. We assume that the corresponding Young diagrams have rows and columns bounded by some linear function of $n$ with leading coefficient less than one. We show that any such sequence has at least exponential growth and we compute an explicit bound.
Vacillating Hecke Tableaux and Linked Partitions

We introduce the structure of vacillating Hecke tableaux, and establish a one-to-one correspondence between vacillating Hecke tableaux and linked partitions by using the Hecke insertion algorithm developed by Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis and Yong. Linked partitions arise in free probability theory. Motivated by the Hecke insertion algorithm, we define a Hecke diagram as a Young diagram possibly with a marked corner. A vacillating Hecke tableau is defined as a sequence of Hecke diagrams subject to certain addition and deletion of rook strips. The notion of a rook strip was introduced by Buch in the study of the Littlewood-Richardson rule for stable Grothendieck polynomials. A rook strip is a skew Young diagram with at most one square in each row and column. We show that the crossing number and the nesting number of a linked partition can be determined by the maximal number of rows and the maximal number of columns of the diagrams in the corresponding vacillating Hecke tableau. The proof relies on a theorem due to Thomas and Yong concerning the lengths of the longest strictly increasing and the longest strictly decreasing subsequences in a word. This implies that the crossing number and the nesting number have a symmetric joint distribution over linked partitions, confirming a conjecture of de Mier. We also prove a conjecture of Kim which states that the crossing number and the nesting number have a symmetric joint distribution over the front representations of partitions.
Pomax games - a family of partizan games played on posets
We introduce the following class of partizan games, called pomax games. Given a partially ordered set whose elements are colored black or white, the players Black and White take turns removing any maximal element of their own color. If there is no such element, the player loses.
We prove that pomax games are always integer-valued and for colored tree posets and chess-colored Young diagram posets we give a simple formula for the value of the game. However, for pomax games on general posets of height 3 we show that the problem of deciding the winner is PSPACE-complete and for posets of height 2 we prove NP-hardness.
Pomax games are just a special case of a larger class of integer-valued games that we call element-removal games, and we pose some open questions regarding element-removal games that are not pomax games.
Partition Statistics Equidistributed with the Number of Hook Difference One Cells
Let $λ$ be a partition, viewed as a Young diagram. We define the hook difference of a cell of $λ$ to be the difference of its leg and arm lengths. Define $h_{1,1}(λ)$ to be the number of cells of $λ$ with hook difference one. In the paper of Buryak and Feigin (arXiv:1206.5640), algebraic geometry is used to prove a generating function identity which implies that $h_{1,1}$ is equidistributed with $a_2$, the largest part of a partition that appears at least twice, over the partitions of a given size. In this paper, we propose a refinement of the theorem of Buryak and Feigin and prove some partial results using combinatorial methods. We also obtain a new formula for the q-Catalan numbers which naturally leads us to define a new q,t-Catalan number with a simple combinatorial interpretation.

We study intersection numbers of invariant divisors in the toric manifold associated with the fan determined by the collection of Weyl chambers for each root system of classical type and of exceptional type $G_2$. We give a combinatorial formula for intersection numbers of certain subvarieties which are naturally indexed by elements of the Weyl group. These numbers describe the ring structure of the cohomology of the toric manifold.
Averages of alpha-determinants over permutations
We show that certain weighted average of the alpha-determinant of a $kn$ by $kn$ matrix of the form $A\otimes1_{1,k}$, the Kronecker product of a $kn$ by $n$ matrix $A$ and $1$ by $k$ all one matrix $1_{1,k}$, over permutations of $kn$ letters is reduced to the $k$-wreath determinant of $A$ up to constant. The constant is exactly given by the modified content polynomial for the Young diagram $(k^n)$. As a corollary, we give a `determinantal' formula for certain functions on the symmetric groups which are invariant under the left and right translation by a Young subgroup, especially the values of the Kostka numbers for rectangular shapes with arbitrary weight. This corollary gives a generalization of the formula of irreducible characters of the symmetric group for rectangular shapes due to Stanley.

In this paper, we consider a deformation of Plancherel measure linked to Jack polynomials. Our main result is the description of the first and second-order asymptotics of the bulk of a random Young diagram under this distribution, which extends celebrated results of Vershik-Kerov and Logan-Shepp (for the first order asymptotics) and Kerov (for the second order asymptotics). This gives more evidence of the connection with Gaussian $β$-ensemble, already suggested by some work of Matsumoto.
Our main tool is a polynomiality result for the structure constant of some quantities that we call Jack characters, recently introduced by Lassalle. We believe that this result is also interested in itself and we give several other applications of it.
Law of Large Numbers for Infinite Random Matrices over a Finite Field

Asymptotic representation theory of general linear groups GL(n,q) over a finite field leads to studying probability measures ρon the group U of all infinite uni-uppertriangular matrices over F_q, with the condition that ρis invariant under conjugations by arbitrary infinite matrices. Such probability measures form an infinite-dimensional simplex, and the description of its extreme points (in other words, ergodic measures ρ) was conjectured by Kerov in connection with nonnegative specializations of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions.
Vershik and Kerov also conjectured the following Law of Large Numbers. Consider an n by n diagonal submatrix of the infinite random matrix drawn from an ergodic measure coming from the Kerov's conjectural classification. The sizes of Jordan blocks of the submatrix can be interpreted as a (random) partition of n, or, equivalently, as a (random) Young diagram λ(n) with n boxes. Then, as n goes to infinity, the rows and columns of λ(n) have almost sure limiting frequencies corresponding to parameters of this ergodic measure.
Our main result is the proof of this Law of Large Numbers. We achieve it by analyzing a new randomized Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) insertion algorithm which samples random Young diagrams λ(n) coming from ergodic measures. The probability weights of these Young diagrams are expressed in terms of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Our insertion algorithm is a modified and extended version of a recent construction by Borodin and the second author (arXiv:1305.5501). On the other hand, our randomized RSK insertion generalizes a version of the RSK insertion introduced by Vershik and Kerov (1986) in connection with asymptotic representation theory of symmetric groups (which is governed by nonnegative specializations of Schur symmetric functions).

We show that the distribution of the major index over the set of involutions in S_n that avoid the pattern 321 is given by the q-analogue of the n-th central binomial coefficient. The proof consists of a composition of three non-trivial bijections, one being the Robinson-Schensted correspondence, ultimately mapping those involutions with major index m into partitions of m whose Young diagram fits inside an n/2 by n/2 box. We also obtain a refinement that keeps track of the descent set, and we deduce an analogous result for the comajor index of 123-avoiding involutions.

We determine the most general form of a smooth function on Young diagrams, that is, a polynomial in the interlacing or multirectangular coordinates whose value depends only on the shape of the diagram. We prove that the algebra of such functions is isomorphic to quasi-symmetric functions, and give a noncommutative analog of this result.
