On the non-existence of certain transitive actions of solvable groups on symplectic spreads
We prove the following result. Let q be a power of an odd prime and let Sp(2m,q) denote the symplectic group of degree 2m over F_q. Then if q=1 mod 4, no solvable subgroup of Sp(2m,q) acts transitively on a complete symplectic spread defined on the underlying vector space of dimension 2m, unless m=1 and q=5. The solvable group Sp(2,3) of order 24 acts transitively on a complete symplectic spread defined on a two-dimensional vector space over F_5. By contrast, when q=3 mod 4, there is a metacyclic group of order 2m(q^m+1) that acts transitively on a complete symplectic spread.

A symplectic refinement of shifted Hecke insertion
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 173 (2020), 105216 • View Publication • BIB
Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong defined Hecke insertion to formulate a combinatorial rule for the expansion of the stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_π$ indexed by permutations in the basis of stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_λ$ indexed by partitions. Patrias and Pylyavskyy introduced a shifted analogue of Hecke insertion whose natural domain is the set of maximal chains in a weak order on orbit closures of the orthogonal group acting on the complete flag variety. We construct a generalization of shifted Hecke insertion for maximal chains in an analogous weak order on orbit closures of the symplectic group. As an application, we identify a combinatorial rule for the expansion of "orthogonal" and "symplectic" shifted analogues of $G_π$ in Ikeda and Naruse's basis of $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions.

q-deformed Character Theory for Infinite-Dimensional Symplectic and Orthogonal Groups
The classification of irreducible, spherical characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary/orthogonal/symplectic groups can be obtained by finding all possible limits of normalized, irreducible characters of the corresponding finite-dimensional groups, as the rank tends to infinity. We solve a q-deformed version of the latter problem for orthogonal and symplectic groups, extending previously known results for the unitary group. The proof is based on novel determinantal and double-contour integral formulas for the q-specialized characters.

Stability of the centers of the symplectic groups rings $\matbb{Z}[Sp_{2n}(q)]$
We investigate the structure constants of the center $\mathcal{H}_n$ of the group algebra $Sp_{n}(q)$ over a finite field. The reflection length on the group $GL_{2n}(q)$ induces a filtration on the algebras $\mathcal{H}_n$. We prove that the structure constants of the associated filtered algebra $\mathcal{S}_n$ are independent of $n$. As a technical tool in the proof, we determine the growth of the centralizers under the embedding $Sp_m(q)\subset Sp_{m+l}(q)$ and we show that the index of the centralizer of $g\in Sp_m(q)$ in the centralizer of $g\in Sp_{m+k}$ is equal to $q^{2ld}|Sp_{r+l}(q)||Sp_{r}(q)|^{-1}$ for some $d$ and $r$ which are uniquely determined by the conjugacy class of $g$ in $GL_{2n}(q).$

Branching rules for Unitary and Symplectic matrices
Published in Communications in algebra, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
This paper concerns the enumeration of simultaneous conjugacy classes of tuples of commuting unitary matrices and of commuting symplectic matrices over a finite field $\mathbf{F}_q$ of odd size. For any given conjugacy class, the orbits for the action of its centralizer group on itself by conjugation are called branches. We determine the branching rules for the unitary groups $U_2(\mathbf{F}_q), U_3(\mathbf{F}_q)$, and for the symplectic groups $Sp_2(\mathbf{F}_q), Sp_4(\mathbf{F}_q)$.

Restricting Schubert classes to symplectic Grassmannians using self-dual puzzles
Given a Schubert class on $Gr(k,V)$ where $V$ is a symplectic vector space of dimension $2n$, we consider its restriction to the symplectic Grassmannian $SpGr(k,V)$ of isotropic subspaces. Pragacz gave tableau formulae for positively computing the expansion of these $H^*(Gr(k,V))$ classes into Schubert classes of the target when $k=n$, which corresponds to expanding Schur polynomials into $Q$-Schur polynomials. Coskun described an algorithm for their expansion when $k\leq n$. We give a puzzle-based formula for these expansions, while extending them to equivariant cohomology. We make use of a new observation that usual Grassmannian puzzle pieces are already enough to do some $2$-step Schubert calculus, and apply techniques from quantum integrable systems (``scattering diagrams'').

Direct families of polytopes with nontrivial Massey products
The problem of existence of nontrivial Massey products in cohomology of a space is well-known in algebraic topology and homological algebra. A number of problems in complex geometry, symplectic geometry, and algebraic topology can be stated in terms of Massey products. One of such problems is to establish formality of smooth manifolds in rational homotopy theory. There have already been constructed a few classes of spaces with nontrivial triple Massey products in cohomology. Until now, very few examples of manifolds $M$ with nontrivial higher Massey products in $H^*(M)$ were known. In this work we introduce a sequence of smooth closed manifolds $\{M_{k}\}^{\infty}_{k=1}$ such that $M_{k}\hookrightarrow M_{k+1}$ is a submanifold and a retract of $M_{k+1}$ for any $k\geq 1$ and there exists a nontrivial Massey product $\langleα_{1},\ldots,α_{n}\rangle$ in $H^*(M_{k})$ for each $2\leq n\leq k$. The sequence $\{M_k\}^{\infty}_{k=1}$ is determined by a new family of flag nestohedra $\mathcal P_{Mas}$. We give P.D.E. for the two-parametric generating series of $\mathcal P_{Mas}$.

Random polymers via orthogonal Whittaker and symplectic Schur functions
This thesis deals with some $(1+1)$-dimensional lattice path models from the KPZ universality class: the directed random polymer with inverse-gamma weights (known as log-gamma polymer) and its zero temperature degeneration, i.e. the last passage percolation model, with geometric or exponential waiting times. We consider three path geometries: point-to-line, point-to-half-line, and point-to-line with paths restricted to stay in a half-plane. Through exact formulas, we establish new connections between integrable probabilistic models and the ubiquitous Whittaker and Schur functions. More in detail, via the use of A. N. Kirillov's geometric Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, we compute the Laplace transform of the polymer partition functions in the above geometries in terms of orthogonal Whittaker functions. In the case of the first two geometries we also provide multiple contour integral formulas. For the corresponding last passage percolation problems, we obtain new formulas in terms of symplectic Schur functions, both directly via RSK on polygonal arrays and via zero temperature limit from the log-gamma polymer formulas. As scaling limits of the point-to-line and point-to-half-line models with exponential waiting times, we derive Sasamoto's Fredholm determinant formula for the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution, as well as the one-point marginal distribution of the ${\rm Airy}_{2\to1}$ process.

The universal Poisson deformation of hypertoric varieties and some classification results
Published in Pacific J. Math. 313 (2021) 459-508 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study and describe the universal Poisson deformation space of hypertoric varieties concretely. In the first application, we show that affine hypertoric varieties as conical symplectic varieties are classified by the associated regular matroids (this is a partial generalization of the result by Arbo and Proudfoot). As a corollary, we obtain a criterion when two quiver varieties whose dimension vector have all coordinates equal to one are isomorphic to each other. Then we describe all 4- and 6-dimensional affine hypertoric varieties as quiver varieties and give some examples of 8-dimensional hypertoric varieties which cannot be raised as such quiver varieties. In the second application, we compute explicitly the number of all projective crepant resolutions of some 4-dimensional hypertoric varieties by using the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements.

Symplectic Matroids, Circuits, and Signed Graphs
One generalization of ordinary matroids is symplectic matroids. While symplectic matroids were initially defined by their collections of bases, there has been no cryptomorphic definition of symplectic matroids in terms of circuits. We give a definition of symplectic matroids by collections of circuits. As an application, we construct a class of examples of symplectic matroids from graphs in terms of circuits.
Double Grothendieck Polynomials for Symplectic and Odd Orthogonal Grassmannians
Published in J. Algebra, 546 (2020), pp. 294--314 • View Publication • BIB
We study the double Grothendieck polynomials of Kirillov--Naruse for the symplectic and odd orthogonal Grassmannians. These functions are explicitly written as sums of Pfaffian and are identified with the stable limits of the fundamental classes of Schubert varieties in the torus equivariant connective K-theory of these isotropic Grassmannians. We also provide a combinatorial description of the ring formally spanned by double Grothendieck polynomials.

The Horn Problem for Real Symmetric and Quaternionic Self-Dual Matrices
Published in SIGMA 15 (2019), 029, 34 pages • View Publication • BIB
Horn's problem, i.e., the study of the eigenvalues of the sum $C=A+B$ of two matrices, given the spectrum of $A$ and of $B$, is re-examined, comparing the case of real symmetric, complex Hermitian and self-dual quaternionic $3\times 3$ matrices. In particular, what can be said on the probability distribution function (PDF) of the eigenvalues of $C$ if $A$ and $B$ are independently and uniformly distributed on their orbit under the action of, respectively, the orthogonal, unitary and symplectic group? While the two latter cases (Hermitian and quaternionic) may be studied by use of explicit formulae for the relevant orbital integrals, the case of real symmetric matrices is much harder. It is also quite intriguing, since numerical experiments reveal the occurrence of singularities where the PDF of the eigenvalues diverges. Here we show that the computation of the PDF of the symmetric functions of the eigenvalues for traceless $3\times 3$ matrices may be carried out in terms of algebraic functions;- roots of quartic polynomials;- and their integrals. The computation is carried out in detail in a particular case, and reproduces the expected singular patterns. The divergences are of logarithmic or inverse power type. We also relate this PDF to the (rescaled) structure constants of zonal polynomials and introduce a zonal analogue of the Weyl ${\rm SU}(n)$ characters.

An orthosymplectic Pieri rule
Published in Electron. J. Comb. Vol 25, Issue 3 (2018), Paper #P3.37 • View Publication • BIB
The classical Pieri formula gives a combinatorial rule for decomposing the product of a Schur function and a complete homogeneous symmetric polynomial as a linear combination of Schur functions with integer coefficients. We give a Pieri rule for describing the product of an orthosymplectic character and an orthosymplectic character arising from a one-row partition. We establish that the orthosymplectic Pieri rule coincides with Sundaram's Pieri rule for symplectic characters and that orthosymplectic characters and symplectic characters obey the same product rule.

Symmetric Dellac configurations
We define symmetric Dellac configurations as the Dellac configurations that are symmetric with respect to their centers. The symmetric Dellac configurations whose lengths are even were previously introduced by Fang and Fourier under the name of symplectic Dellac configurations, to parametrize the torus fixed points of symplectic degenerate flag varieties. In general, symmetric Dellac configurations generate the Poincaré polynomials of (odd or even) symplectic or orthogonal versions of the degenerate flag varieties. In this paper, we give several combinatorial interpretations of the polynomial extensions $(D_n(x))_{n \geq~0}$ of median Euler numbers, defined by Randrianarivony and Zeng, in terms of objects that we name extended Dellac configurations and which generate symmetric Dellac configurations. As a consequence, the cardinalities of the odd and even symmetric Dellac configurations are respectively given by the two adjoining sequences $(l_n)_{n \geq~0} = (1, 1, 3, 21, 267,\dots)$ and $(r_n)_{n \geq~0} = (1,2,10,98,1594,\dots)$, defined as specializations of the polynomials $(D_n(x))_{n \geq~0}$.

New irrational polygons with Ehrhart-theoretic period collapse
In a recent paper, Cristofaro-Gardiner--Li--Stanley [CGLS15] constructed examples of irrational triangles whose Ehrhart functions (i.e. lattice-point count) are polynomials when restricted to positive integer dilation factors. This is very surprising because the Ehrhart functions of rational polygons are usually only quasi-polynomials. We demonstrate that most of their triangles can also be obtained by a simple cut-and-paste procedure that allows us to build new examples with more sides. Our examples might potentially have applications in the theory of symplectic embeddings.

Theta and eta polynomials in geometry, Lie theory, and combinatorics
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical Schur polynomials form a natural basis for the ring of symmetric polynomials, and have geometric significance since they represent the Schubert classes in the cohomology ring of Grassmannians. Moreover, these polynomials enjoy rich combinatorial properties. In the last decade, an exact analogue of this picture has emerged in the symplectic and orthogonal Lie types, with the Schur polynomials replaced by the theta and eta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and the author. This expository paper gives an overview of what is known to date about this correspondence, with examples.

On line covers of finite projective and polar spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
An $m$-$cover$ of lines of a finite projective space ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ (of a finite polar space $\cal P$) is a set of lines $\cal L$ of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ (of $\cal P$) such that every point of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ (of $\cal P$) contains $m$ lines of $\cal L$, for some $m$. Embed ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ in ${\rm PG}(r,q^2)$. Let $\bar{\cal L}$ denote the set of points of ${\rm PG}(r,q^2)$ lying on the extended lines of $\cal L$. An $m$-cover $\cal L$ of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ is an $(r-2)$-dual $m$-cover if there are two possibilities for the number of lines of $\cal L$ contained in an $(r-2)$-space of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$. Basing on this notion, we characterize $m$-covers $\cal L$ of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ such that $\bar{\cal L}$ is a two-character set of ${\rm PG}(r,q^2)$. In particular, we show that if $\cal L$ is invariant under a Singer cyclic group of ${\rm PG}(r,q)$ then it is an $(r-2)$-dual $m$-cover. Assuming that the lines of $\cal L$ are lines of a symplectic polar space ${\cal W}(r,q)$ (of an orthogonal polar space ${\cal Q}(r,q)$ of parabolic type), similarly to the projective case we introduce the notion of an $(r-2)$-dual $m$-cover of symplectic type (of parabolic type). We prove that an $m$-cover $\cal L$ of ${\cal W}(r,q)$ (of ${\cal Q}(r,q)$) has this dual property if and only if $\bar{\cal L}$ is a tight set of an Hermitian variety ${\cal H}(r,q^2)$ or of ${\cal W}(r,q^2)$ (of ${\cal H}(r,q^2)$ or of ${\cal Q}(r,q^2)$). We also provide some interesting examples of $(4n-3)$-dual $m$-covers of symplectic type of ${\cal W}(4n-1,q)$.
Veldkamp Spaces of Low-Dimensional Ternary Segre Varieties
Published in Results in Mathematics 74 (2019) 54 • View Publication • BIB
Making use of the `Veldkamp blow-up' recipe, introduced by Saniga and others (Ann. Inst. H. Poincar\' e D2 (2015) 309) for binary Segre varieties, we study geometric hyperplanes and Veldkamp lines of Segre varieties $S_k(3)$, where $S_k(3)$ stands for the $k$-fold direct product of projective lines of size four and $k$ runs from 2 to 4. Unlike the binary case, the Veldkamp spaces here feature also non-projective elements. Although for $k=2$ such elements are found only among Veldkamp lines, for $k \geq 3$ they are also present among Veldkamp points of the associated Segre variety. Even if we consider only projective geometric hyperplanes, we find four different types of non-projective Veldkamp lines of $S_3(3)$, having 2268 members in total, and five more types if non-projective ovoids are also taken into account. Sole geometric and combinatorial arguments lead to as many as 62 types of projective Veldkamp lines of $S_3(3)$, whose blowing-ups yield 43 distinct types of projective geometric hyperplanes of $S_4(3)$. As the latter number falls short of 48, the number of different large orbits of $2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2$ arrays over the three-element field found by Bremner and Stavrou (Lin. Multilin. Algebra 61 (2013) 986), there are five (explicitly indicated) hyperplane types such that each is the merger of two different large orbits. Furthermore, we single out those 22 types of geometric hyperplanes of $S_4(3)$, featuring 7 176 640 members in total, that are in a one-to-one correspondence with the points lying on the unique hyperbolic quadric $\mathcal{Q}_0^{+}(15,3) \subset {\rm PG}(15,3) \subset \mathcal{V}(S_4(3))$; and, out of them, seven ones that correspond bijectively to the set of 91 840 generators of the symplectic polar space $\mathcal{W}(7,3) \subset \mathcal{V}(S_3(3))$. For $k=3$ we also discuss embedding of the binary Veldkamp space into the ternary one.

Conormal Varieties on the Cominuscule Grassmannian - II
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $X_w$ be a Schubert subvariety of a cominuscule Grassmannian $X$, and let $μ:T^*X\rightarrow\mathcal N$ be the Springer map from the cotangent bundle of $X$ to the nilpotent cone $\mathcal N$. In this paper, we construct a resolution of singularities for the conormal variety $T^*_XX_w$ of $X_w$ in $X$. Further, for $X$ the usual or symplectic Grassmannian, we compute a system of equations defining $T^*_XX_w$ as a subvariety of the cotangent bundle $T^*X$ set-theoretically. This also yields a system of defining equations for the corresponding orbital varieties $μ(T^*_XX_w)$. Inspired by the system of defining equations, we conjecture a type-independent equality, namely $T^*_XX_w=π^{-1}(X_w)\capμ^{-1}(μ(T^*_XX_w))$. The set-theoretic version of this conjecture follows from this work and previous work for any cominuscule Grassmannian of type A, B, or C.

Lagrangian subspaces, delta-matroids and four-term relations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Finite order invariants (Vassiliev invariants) of knots are expressed in terms of weight systems, that is, functions on chord diagrams satisfying the four-term relations. Weight systems have graph analogues, so-called $4$-invariants of graphs, i.e. functions on graphs that satisfy the four-term relations for graphs. Each $4$-invariant determines a weight system. The notion of weight system is naturally generalized for the case of embedded graphs with an arbitrary number of vertices. Such embedded graphs correspond to links; to each component of a link there corresponds a vertex of an embedded graph. Recently, two approaches have been suggested to extend the notion of $4$-invariants of graphs to the case of combinatorial structures corresponding to embedded graphs with an arbitrary number of vertices. The first approach is due to V.~Kleptsyn and E.~Smirnov, who considered functions on Lagrangian subspaces in a $2n$-dimensional space over $\mathbb{F}_2$ endowed with a standard symplectic form and introduced four-term relations for them. On the other hand, the second approach, the one due to Zhukov and Lando, suggests four-term relations for functions on binary delta-matroids. In this paper, we prove that the two approaches are equivalent.
