Tropical decomposition of Young's partition lattice

Young's partition lattice $L(m,n)$ consists of unordered partitions having $m$ parts where each part is at most $n$. Using methods from complex algebraic geometry, R. Stanley proved that $L(m,n)$ is rank-symmetric, unimodal, and strongly Sperner. Moreover, he conjectured that $L(m,n)$ has a stronger property called symmetric chain decomposition. Despite many efforts, this conjecture has only been proved for $\min(m,n)\leq 4$. In this paper, we decompose $L(m,n)$ into level sets for certain tropical polynomials derived from the secant varieties of the rational normal curve in projective space, and we find that the resulting subposets have an elementary raising and lowering algorithm. As a corollary, we obtain a symmetric chain decomposition for the subposet of $L(m,n)$ consisting of "sufficiently generic" partitions.
Generalization of a few results in Integer Partitions
In this paper, we generalize a few important results in Integer Partitions; namely the results known as Stanley's theorem and Elder's theorem, and the congruence results proposed by Ramanujan for the partition function. We generalize the results of Stanley and Elder from a fixed integer to an array of subsequent integers, and propose an analogue of Ramanujan's congruence relations for the `number of parts' function instead of the partition function. We also deduce the generating function for the `number of parts', and relate the technical results with their graphical interpretations through a novel use of the Ferrer's diagrams.

A \emph{Golomb ruler} is a sequence of distinct integers (the \emph{markings} of the ruler) whose pairwise differences are distinct. Golomb rulers can be traced back to additive number theory in the 1930s and have attracted recent research activities on existence problems, such as the search for \emph{optimal} Golomb rulers (those of minimal length given a fixed number of markings). Our goal is to enumerate Golomb rulers in a systematic way: we study
[g_m(t) := # {\x \in \Z^{m+1} : \, 0 = x_0 < x_1 < ... < x_{m-1} < x_m = t, \text{all} x_j - x_k \text{distinct}},]
the number of Golomb rulers with $m+1$ markings and length $t$. Our main result is that $g_m(t)$ is a quasipolynomial in $t$ which satisfies a combinatorial reciprocity theorem: $(-1)^{m-1} g_m(-t)$ equals the number of rulers $\x$ of length $t$ with $m+1$ markings, each counted with its \emph{Golomb multiplicity}, which measures how many combinatorially different Golomb rulers are in a small neighborhood of $\x$. Our reciprocity theorem can be interpreted in terms of certain mixed graphs associated to Golomb rulers; in this language, it is reminiscent of Stanley's reciprocity theorem for chromatic polynomials. Thus in the second part of the paper we develop an analogue of Stanley's theorem to mixed graphs, which connects their chromatic polynomials to acyclic orientations.

Let G be a group of automorphisms of a ranked poset Q and let N_{k} denote the number of orbits on the elements of rank k in Q. What can be said about the N_{k} for standard posets, such as finite projective spaces or the Boolean lattice? We discuss the connection of this question to the representation theory of the group, and in particular to the inequalities of Livingstone-Wagner and Stanley. We show that these are special cases of more general inequalities which depend on the prime divisors of the group order. The new inequalities often yield stronger bounds depending on the order of the group.

Let $I\subset S=\KK[x_1,...,x_n]$ be an ideal generated by squarefree monomials of degree $\ge d$. If the number of degree $d$ minimal generating monomials $μ_d(I)\le \min(\binom{n}{d+1},\sum_{j=1}^{n-d}\binom{2j-1}{j})$, then the Stanley depth $\sdepth_S(I)\ge d+1$.

We construct many nonpolytopal nonsimplicial Gorenstein* meet semi-lattices with nonnegative toric g-vector, supporting a conjecture of Stanley. These are formed as Bier spheres over the face posets of multiplexes, polytopes constructed by Bisztriczky as generalizations of simplices.

We use the Pieri and Giambelli formulas of arXiv:0809.4966 and arXiv:1109.6669 and the calculus of raising operators developed in arXiv:0811.2781 and arXiv:0812.0639 to prove a tableau formula for eta polynomials of arXiv:1109.6669 and the Stanley symmetric functions which correspond to Grassmannian elements of the Weyl group $W_n$ of type $D_n$. We define the skew elements of $W_n$ and exhibit a bijection between the set of reduced words for any skew element $w$ in $W_n$ and a set of certain standard typed tableaux on a skew shape $λ/μ$ associated to $w$.

We give a direct combinatorial proof of the known fact that the 3-cube has 384 spanning trees, using an "edge slide" operation on spanning trees. This gives an answer in the case n=3 to a question implicitly raised by Stanley. Our argument also gives a bijective proof of the n=3 case of a weighted count of the spanning trees of the n-cube due to Martin and Reiner.
A tour of the Weak and Strong Lefschetz Properties

An artinian graded algebra, $A$, is said to have the Weak Lefschetz property (WLP) if multiplication by a general linear form has maximal rank in every degree. A vast quantity of work has been done studying and applying this property, touching on numerous and diverse areas of algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, and combinatorics. Amazingly, though, much of this work has a "common ancestor" in a theorem originally due to Stanley, although subsequently reproved by others. In this expository paper we describe the different directions in which research has moved starting with this theorem, and we discuss some of the open questions that continue to motivate current research.
Shellability of complexes of directed trees

The question of shellability of complexes of directed trees was asked by R. Stanley. D. Kozlov showed that the existence of a complete source in a directed graph provides a shelling of its complex of directed trees. We will show that this property gives a shelling that is straightforward in some sense. Among the simplicial polytopes, only the crosspolytopes allow such a shelling. Furthermore, we show that the complex of directed trees of a complete double directed graph is a union of suitable spheres. We also investigate shellability of the maximal pure skeleton of a complex of directed trees. Also, we prove that is vertex-decomposable. For these complexes we describe the set of generating facets.

We prove Stanley's conjecture that, if delta_n is the staircase shape, then the skew Schur functions s_{delta_n / mu} are non-negative sums of Schur P-functions. We prove that the coefficients in this sum count certain fillings of shifted shapes. In particular, for the skew Schur function s_{delta_n / delta_{n-2}}, we discuss connections with Eulerian numbers and alternating permutations.

We give an iterative method to realize general Jack functions from Jack functions of rectangular shapes. We first show some cases of Stanley's conjecture on positivity of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, and then use this method to give a new realization of Jack functions. We also show in general that vectors of products of Jack vertex operators form a basis of symmetric functions. In particular this gives a new proof of linear independence for the rectangular and marked rectangular Jack vertex operators. Thirdly a generalized Frobenius formula for Jack functions was given and was used to give new evaluation of Dyson integrals and even powers of Vandermonde determinant.

We present an equivariant bijection between two actions--promotion and rowmotion--on order ideals in certain posets. This bijection simultaneously generalizes a result of R. Stanley concerning promotion on the linear extensions of two disjoint chains and recent work of D. Armstrong, C. Stump, and H. Thomas on root posets and noncrossing partitions. We apply this bijection to several classes of posets, obtaining equivariant bijections to various known objects under rotation. We extend the same idea to give an equivariant bijection between alternating sign matrices under rowmotion and under B. Wieland's gyration. Finally, we define two actions with related orders on alternating sign matrices and totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions.
Stanley Conjecture on intersection of three monomial primary ideals
We show that the Stanley's Conjecture holds for an intersection of three monomial primary ideals of a polynomial algebra S over a field.
Depth and minimal number of generators of square free monomial ideals
Let $I$ be an ideal of a polynomial algebra $S$ over a field generated by square free monomials of degree $\geq d$. If $I$ contains more monomials of degree $d$ than $(n-d)/(n-d+1)$ of the total number of square free monomials of $S$ of degree $d+1$ then $\depth_SI\leq d$, in particular the Stanley's Conjecture holds in this case.
Flag subdivisions and $γ$-vectors

The $γ$-vector is an important enumerative invariant of a flag simplicial homology sphere. It has been conjectured by Gal that this vector is nonnegative for every such sphere $Δ$ and by Reiner, Postnikov and Williams that it increases when $Δ$ is replaced by any flag simplicial homology sphere which geometrically subdivides $Δ$. Using the nonnegativity of the $γ$-vector in dimension 3, proved by Davis and Okun, as well as Stanley's theory of simplicial subdivisions and local $h$-vectors, the latter conjecture is confirmed in this paper in dimensions 3 and 4.

We discuss three distinct topics of independent interest; one in enumerative combinatorics, one in symmetric function theory, and one in algebraic geometry. The topic in enumerative combinatorics concerns a q-analog of a generalization of the Eulerian polynomials, the one in symmetric function theory deals with a refinement of the chromatic symmetric functions of Stanley, and the one in algebraic geometry deals with Tymoczko's representation of the symmetric group on the cohomology of the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety of type A. Our purpose is to explore some remarkable connections between these topics.
On Two Classes of Closely Related Monomial Ideals
In [7] we obtained a formula for the Hilbert depth of squarefree Veronese ideals in a standard graded polynomial ring by relating it to the Hilbert depth of powers of the irrelevant maximal ideal. In this paper, we prove that these two Hilbert depth formulas are equivalent to each other. Our result reveals that there is a strong connection between these two classes of seemingly unrelated monomial ideals. We conjecture that their Stanley depths are equivalent as well.
Posets, parking functions and the regions of the Shi arrangement revisited
The number of regions of the type A_{n-1} Shi arrangement in R^n is counted by the intrinsically beautiful formula (n+1)^{n-1}. First proved by Shi, this result motivated Pak and Stanley as well as Athanasiadis and Linusson to provide bijective proofs. We give a description of the Athanasiadis-Linusson bijection and generalize it to a bijection between the regions of the type C_n Shi arrangement in R^n and sequences a_1a_2...a_n, where a_i \in \{-n, -n+1,..., -1, 0, 1,..., n-1, n\}, i \in [n]. Our bijections naturally restrict to bijections between regions of the arrangements with a certain number of ceilings (or floors) and sequences with a given number of distinct elements. A special family of posets, whose antichains encode the regions of the arrangements, play a central role in our approach.
$h$-vectors of small matroid complexes
Stanley conjectured in 1977 that the $h$-vector of a matroid simplicial complex is a pure $O$-sequence. We give simple constructive proofs that the conjecture is true for matroids of rank less than or equal to 3, and corank 2. We used computers to verify that Stanley's conjecture holds for all matroids on at most nine elements.
