Scheduling Problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of a scheduling problem which is a boolean function $S$ over atomic formulas of the form $x_i \leq x_j$. Considering the $x_i$ as jobs to be performed, an integer assignment satisfying $S$ schedules the jobs subject to the constraints of the atomic formulas. The scheduling counting function counts the number of solutions to $S$. We prove that this counting function is a polynomial in the number of time slots allowed. Scheduling polynomials include the chromatic polynomial of a graph, the zeta polynomial of a lattice, the Billera-Jia-Reiner polynomial of a matroid. To any scheduling problem, we associate not only a counting function for solutions, but also a quasisymmetric function and a quasisymmetric function in non-commuting variables. These scheduling functions include the chromatic symmetric functions of Sagan, Gebhard, and Stanley, and a close variant of Ehrenborg's quasisymmetric function for posets. Geometrically, we consider the space of all solutions to a given scheduling problem. We extend a result of Steingrímmson by proving that the $h$-vector of the space of solutions is given by a shift of the scheduling polynomial. Furthermore, under certain niceness conditions on the defining boolean function, we prove partitionability of the space of solutions and positivity of fundamental expansions of the scheduling quasisymmetric functions and of the $h$-vector of the scheduling polynomial.

Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $I$ be the edge ideal of a clutter $\mathcal{C}$ in a polynomial ring $S$. In this paper, we present estimations of the Stanley depth of $I$ as well as the Stanley regularity of $S/I$, in terms of combinatorial data from the clutter $\mathcal{C}$.

Stanley's Lemma and Multiple Theta Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present an algorithmic approach to the verification of identities on multiple theta functions in the form of products of theta functions $[(-1)^δa_1^{α_1}a_2^{α_2}\cdots a_r^{α_r}q^{s}; q^{t}]_\infty$, where $α_i$ are integers, $δ=0$ or $1$, $s\in \mathbb{Q}$, $t\in \mathbb{Q}^{+}$, and the exponent vectors $(α_1,α_2,\ldots,α_r)$ are linearly independent over $\mathbb{Q}$. For an identity on such multiple theta functions, we provide an algorithmic approach for computing a system of contiguous relations satisfied by all the involved multiple theta functions. Using Stanley's Lemma on the fundamental parallelepiped, we show that a multiple theta function can be determined by a finite number of its coefficients. Thus such an identity can be reduced to a finite number of simpler relations. Many classical multiple theta function identities fall into this framework, including Riemann's addition formula and the extended Riemann identity.

Moments of normally distributed random matrices - Bijective explicit evaluation
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper is devoted to the distribution of the eigenvalues of $XUYU^t$ where $X$ and $Y$ are given symmetric matrices and $U$ is a random real valued square matrix of standard normal distribution. More specifically we look at its moments, i.e. the mathematical expectation of the trace of $(XUYU^t)^n$ for arbitrary integer $n$. Hanlon, Stanley, Stembridge (1992) showed that this quantity can be expressed in terms of some generating series for the connection coefficients of the double cosets of the hyperoctahedral group with the eigenvalues of $X$ and $Y$ as indeterminate. We provide an explicit evaluation of these series in terms of monomial symmetric functions. Our development relies on an interpretation of the connection coefficients in terms of locally orientable hypermaps and a new bijective construction between partitioned locally orientable hypermaps and some decorated forests. As a corollary we provide a simple explicit evaluation of the moments of $XUYU^*$ when $U$ is complex valued and $X$ and $Y$ are given hermitian matrices.

The Potts model and chromatic functions of graphs
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Comb. Phys. Interact. 1 (2014), 47-60 • View Publication • BIB
The $U$-polynomial of Noble and Welsh is known to have intimate connections with the Potts model as well as with several important graph polynomials. For each graph $G$, $U(G)$ is equivalent to Stanley's symmetric bad colouring polynomial $XB(G)$. Moreover Sarmiento established the equivalence between $U$ and the polychromate of Brylawski. Loebl defined the $q$-dichromate $B_q(G,x,y)$ as a function of a graph $G$ and three independent variables $q,x,y$, proved that it is equal to the partition function of the Potts model with variable number of states and with a certain external field contribution, and conjectured that the $q$-dichromate is equivalent to the $U$-polynomial. He also proposed a stronger conjecture on integer partitions. The aim of this paper is two-fold. We present a construction disproving Loebl's integer partitions conjecture, and we introduce a new function $B_{r,q}(G;x,k)$ which is also equal to the partition function of the Potts model with variable number of states and with a (different) external field contribution, and we show that $B_{r,q}(G;x,k)$ is equivalent to the $U$-polynomial and to Stanley's symmetric bad colouring polynomial.

Combinatorial, piecewise-linear, and birational homomesy for products of two chains
Published • View Publication • BIB
This article illustrates the dynamical concept of $homomesy$ in three kinds of dynamical systems -- combinatorial, piecewise-linear, and birational -- and shows the relationship between these three settings. In particular, we show how the rowmotion and promotion operations of Striker and Williams can be lifted to (continuous) piecewise-linear operations on the order polytope of Stanley, and then lifted to birational operations on the positive orthant in $\mathbb{R}^{|P|}$ and indeed to a dense subset of $\mathbb{C}^{|P|}$. When the poset $P$ is a product of a chain of length $a$ and a chain of length $b$, these lifted operations have order $a+b$, and exhibit the homomesy phenomenon: the time-averages of various quantities are the same in all orbits. One important tool is a concrete realization of the conjugacy between rowmotion and promotion found by Striker and Williams; this $recombination$ $map$ allows us to use homomesy for promotion to deduce homomesy for rowmotion. NOTE: An earlier draft showed that Stanley's transfer map between the order polytope and the chain polytope arises as the tropicalization of an analogous map in the bilinear realm; in 2020 we removed this material for the sake of brevity, especially after Joseph and Roby generalized our proof to the noncommutative realm (see arXiv:1909.09658v3). Readers who nonetheless wish to see our proof can find the September 2018 draft of this preprint through the arXiv.

Order polynomials and Pólya's enumeration theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Pólya's enumeration theorem is concerned with counting labeled sets up to symmetry. Given a finite group acting on a finite set of labeled elements it states that the number of labeled sets up to symmetry is given by a polynomial in the number of labels. We give a new perspective on this theorem by generalizing it to partially ordered sets and order preserving maps. Further we prove a reciprocity statement in terms of strictly order preserving maps generalizing a classical result by Stanley (1970). We apply our results to counting graph colorings up to symmetry.

On some colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions
Recently, Hyatt introduced some colored Eulerian quasisymmetric function to study the joint distribution of excedance number and major index on colored permutation groups. We show how Hyatt's generating function formula for the fixed point colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions can be deduced from the Decrease value theorem of Foata and Han. Using this generating function formula, we prove two symmetric function generalizations of the Chung-Graham-Knuth symmetrical Eulerian identity for some flag Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which are specialized to the flag excedance numbers. Combinatorial proofs of those symmetrical identities are also constructed. We also study some other properties of the flag Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. In particular, we confirm a recent conjecture of Mongelli [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 120 (2013) 1216--1234] about the unimodality of the generating function of the flag excedances over the type B derangements. Moreover, colored versions of the hook factorization and admissible inversions of permutations are found, as well as a new recurrence formula for the $(\maj-\exc,\fexc)$-$q$-Eulerian polynomials. We introduce a colored analog of Rawlings major index on colored permutations and obtain an interpretation of the colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions as sums of some fundamental quasisymmetric functions related with them, by applying Stanley's $P$-partition theory and a decomposition of the Chromatic quasisymmetric functions due to Shareshian and Wachs.

G-parking functions and tree inversions
Published • View Publication • BIB
A depth-first search version of Dhar's burning algorithm is used to give a bijection between the parking functions of a graph and labeled spanning trees, relating the degree of the parking function with the number of inversions of the spanning tree. Specializing to the complete graph answers a problem posed by R. Stanley.

Graphs with Equal Chromatic Symmetric Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Stanley [9] introduced the chromatic symmetric function ${\bf X}_G$ associated to a simple graph $G$ as a generalization of the chromatic polynomial of $G$. In this paper we present a novel technique to write ${\bf X}_G$ as a linear combination of chromatic symmetric functions of smaller graphs. We use this technique to give a sufficient condition for two graphs to have the same chromatic symmetric function. We then construct an infinite family of pairs of unicyclic graphs with the same chromatic symmetric function, answering the question posed by Martin, Morin, and Wagner [7] of whether such a pair exists. Finally, we approach the problem of whether it is possible to determine a tree from its chromatic symmetric function. Working towards an answer to this question, we give a classification theorem for single-centroid trees in terms of data closely related to its chromatic symmetric function.

Topology of polyhedral products and the Golod property of Stanley-Reisner rings
The polyhedral product is a space constructed from a simplicial complex and a collection of pairs of spaces, which is connected with the Stanley Reisner ring of the simplicial complex via cohomology. Generalizing the previous work Grbic and Theriault, Grujic and Welker, and the authors, we show a decomposition of polyhedral products for a large class of simplicial complexes including the ones whose Alexander duals are shellable or sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. This implies the property, called Golod, of the corresponding Stanley-Reisner rings proved by Herzog, Reiner and Welker.

A modular relation for the chromatic symmetric functions of (3+1)-free posets
We consider a linear relation which expresses Stanley's chromatic symmetric function for a poset in terms of the chromatic symmetric functions of some closely related posets, which we call the modular law. By applying this in the context of (3+1)-free posets, we are able to reduce Stanley and Stembridge's conjecture that the chromatic symmetric functions of all (3+1)-free posets are e-positive to the case of (3+1)-and-(2+2)-free posets, also known as unit interval orders. In fact, our reduction can be pushed further to a much smaller class of posets, for which we have no satisfying characterization. We also obtain a new proof of the fact that all 3-free posets have e-positive chromatic symmetric functions.

Stanley depth and symbolic powers of monomial ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
The aim of this paper is to study the Stanley depth of symbolic powers of a squarefree monomial ideal. We prove that for every squarefree monomial ideal $I$ and every pair of integers $k, s\geq 1$, the inequalities ${\rm sdepth} (S/I^{(ks)}) \leq {\rm sdepth} (S/I^{(s)})$ and ${\rm sdepth} (I^{(ks)}) \leq {\rm sdepth} (I^{(s)})$ hold. If moreover $I$ is unmixed of height $d$, then we show that for every integer $k\geq1$, ${\rm sdepth}(I^{(k+d)})\leq {\rm sdepth}(I^{(k)})$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/I^{(k+d)})\leq {\rm sdepth}(S/I^{(k)})$. Finally, we consider the limit behavior of the Stanley depth of symbolic powers of a squarefree monomial ideal. We also introduce a method for comparing the Stanley depth of factors of monomial ideals.

Diagrams of affine permutations, balanced labellings, and symmetric functions
We generalize the work of Fomin, Greene, Reiner, and Shimozono on balanced labellings in two directions: (1) we define the diagrams of affine permutations and the balanced labellings on them; (2) we define the set-valued version of the balanced labellings. We show that the column-strict balanced labellings on the diagram of an affine permutation yield the affine Stanley symmetric function defined by Lam, and that the column-strict set-valued balanced labellings yield the affine stable Grothendieck polynomial of Lam. Moreover, once we impose suitable flag conditions, the flagged column-strict set-valued balanced labellings on the diagram of a finite permutation give a monomial expansion of the Grothendieck polynomial of Lascoux and Schützenberger. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for a diagram to be an affine permutation diagram.

Permutation patterns, Stanley symmetric functions and generalized Specht modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generalizing the notion of a vexillary permutation, we introduce a filtration of S_infinity by the number of Schur function terms in the Stanley symmetric function, with the kth filtration level called the k-vexillary permutations. We show that for each k, the k-vexillary permutations are characterized by avoiding a finite set of patterns. A key step is the construction of a Specht series, in the sense of James and Peel, for the Specht module associated to the diagram of a permutation. As a corollary, we prove a conjecture of Liu on diagram varieties for certain classes of permutation diagrams. We apply similar techniques to characterize multiplicity-free Stanley symmetric functions, as well as permutations whose diagram is equivalent to a forest in the sense of Liu.

An algorithm for computing the multigraded Hilbert depth of a module
Published • View Publication • BIB
A method for computing the multigraded Hilbert depth of a module was presented in [16]. In this paper we improve the method and we introduce an effective algorithm for performing the computations. In a particular case, the algorithm may also be easily adapted for computing the Stanley depth of the module. We further present interesting examples which were found with the help of an experimental implementation of the algorithm. Thus, we completely solve several open problems proposed by Herzog in [12].

A generalization of Euler numbers to finite Coxeter groups
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 19(2) (2015), 325--336 • View Publication • BIB
It is known that Euler numbers, defined as the Taylor coefficients of the tangent and secant functions, count alternating permutations in the symmetric group. Springer defined a generalization of these numbers for each finite Coxeter group by considering the largest descent class, and computed the value in each case of the classification. We consider here another generalization of Euler numbers for finite Coxeter groups, building on Stanley's result about the number of orbits of maximal chains of set partitions. We present a method to compute these integers and obtain the value in each case of the classification.

Tower tableaux and Schubert polynomials
We prove that the well-known condition of being a balanced labeling can be characterized in terms of the sliding algorithm on tower diagrams. The characterization involves a generalization of authors' Rothification algorithm. Using the characterization, we obtain descriptions of Schubert polynomials and Stanley symmetric functions.
Structure and enumeration of (3+1)-free posets
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 18 (2014) 645-674 • View Publication • BIB
A poset is (3+1)-free if it does not contain the disjoint union of chains of length 3 and 1 as an induced subposet. These posets play a central role in the (3+1)-free conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge. Lewis and Zhang have enumerated (3+1)-free posets in the graded case by decomposing them into bipartite graphs, but until now the general enumeration problem has remained open. We give a finer decomposition into bipartite graphs which applies to all (3+1)-free posets and obtain generating functions which count (3+1)-free posets with labelled or unlabelled vertices. Using this decomposition, we obtain a decomposition of the automorphism group and asymptotics for the number of (3+1)-free posets.
