Dual Schubert polynomials via a Cauchy identity
We give a combinatorial proof that Postnikov and Stanley's formula for dual Schubert polynomials in terms of weighted chains in Bruhat order is equivalent to a classical Cauchy identity for polynomials. This gives a natural interpretation of Huang and Pylyavskyy's recent insertion algorithms.
Lattice Path Delta Matroids
We initiate the study of a type $C_n$ generalization of the lattice path matroids defined by Bonin, de Mier, and Noy. These are delta matroids whose feasible sets are in bijection with lattice paths which are symmetric along the main diagonal. We describe deletion, contraction, enveloping matroids, and the homogeneous components of these delta matroids in terms of the combinatorics of symmetric lattice paths.
In the second half, we study the convex geometry of the feasible polytopes of lattice path delta matroids. We show that these polytopes decompose into the feasible polytope of special lattice paths corresponding to intervals in the type $C_n$ Gale order whose related Richardson variety is a toric variety. Further, these special polytopes inherit a unimodular triangulation from Stanley's Eulerian triangulation of the hypercube. As a consequence, the volume of these polytopes is the proportion of permutations with specific ascent sets.
Shuffle series

We apply operad theory to enumerative combinatorics in order to count the number of shuffles between series-parallel posets and chains. We work with three types of shuffles, two of them noncommutative, for example a left deck-divider shuffle $A$ between $P$ and $Q$ is a shuffle of the posets in which, on every maximal chain $m\subset A$, the minimum and maximum elements belong to $P$ and no two consecutive points of $Q$ appear consecutively on $m$. The number of left deck-divider shuffles of $P$ and $Q$ differ from the number of left deck-divider shuffles of $Q$ and $P$.
The generating functions whose $n$ coefficient counts shuffles between a poset $P$ and $1<2<\cdots<n$ are called shuffle series. We explain how shuffle series are isomorphic to order series as algebras over the operad of series parallel posets.
The weak and strict order polynomials are well known in the literature. At the level of generating series, with the theory of sets with a negative number of elements, we introduce a third order series and prove a theorem in the style of Stanley's Reciprocity Theorem compatible with the structure of algebras over the operad of finite posets.
We conclude by describing the relationship of our work with the combinatorial properties of the operadic tensor product of free trees operads.

We study three invariants of geometrically vertex decomposable ideals: the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, the multiplicity, and the $a$-invariant. We show that these invariants can be computed recursively using the ideals that appear in the geometric vertex decomposition process. As an application, we prove that the $a$-invariant of a geometrically vertex decomposable ideal is non-positive. We also recover some previously known results in the literature including a formula for the regularity of the Stanley--Reisner ideal of a pure vertex decomposable simplicial complex, and proofs that some well-known families of ideals are Hilbertian. Finally, we apply our recursions to the study of toric ideals of bipartite graphs. Included among our results on this topic is a new proof for a known bound on the $a$-invariant of a toric ideal of a bipartite graph.
Signed Poset Polytopes
Stanley introduced in 1986 the order polytope and the chain polytope for a given finite poset. These polytopes contain much information about the poset and have given rise to important examples in polyhedral geometry. In 1993, Reiner introduced signed posets as natural type-B analogues of posets. We define and study signed order and chain polytopes. Our results include convex-hull and halfspace descriptions, unimodular triangulations, Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials and their relations to signed permutation statistics, and a Gorenstein characterization of signed order and chain polytopes.

Assuming Stanley's $P$-partition conjecture holds, the regular Schur labeled skew shape posets with underlying set $\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$ are precisely the posets $P$ such that the $P$-partition generating function is symmetric and the set of linear extensions of $P$, denoted $Σ_L(P)$, is a left weak Bruhat interval in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We describe the permutations in $Σ_L(P)$ in terms of reading words of standard Young tableaux when $P$ is a regular Schur labeled skew shape poset, and classify $Σ_L(P)$'s up to descent-preserving isomorphism as $P$ ranges over regular Schur labeled skew shape posets. The results obtained are then applied to classify the $0$-Hecke modules $\mathsf{M}_P$ associated with regular Schur labeled skew shape posets $P$ up to isomorphism. Then we characterize regular Schur labeled skew shape posets as the posets whose linear extensions form a dual plactic-closed subset of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Using this characterization, we construct distinguished filtrations of $\mathsf{M}_P$ with respect to the Schur basis when $P$ is a regular Schur labeled skew shape poset. Further issues concerned with the classification and decomposition of the $0$-Hecke modules $\mathsf{M}_P$ are also discussed.

In this paper, we use the Lambert series generating function for Euler's totient function to introduce a new identity for the number of $1$'s in the partitions of $n$. A new expansion for Euler's partition function $p(n)$ is derived in this context. These surprising new results connect the famous classical totient function from multiplicative number theory to the additive theory of partitions.
Rigidity of Balanced Minimal Cycle Complexes

A $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ$ is balanced if its graph $G(Δ)$ is $d$-colorable. Klee and Novik obtained the balanced lower bound theorem for balanced normal $(d-1)$-pseudomanifolds $Δ$ with $d\geq3$ by showing that the subgraph of $G(Δ)$ induced by the vertices colored in $T$ is rigid in $\mathbb{R}^3$ for any $3$ colors $T$. We show that the same rigidity result, and thus the balanced lower bound theorem, holds for balanced minimal $(d-1)$-cycle complexes with $d \geq 3$. Motivated by the Stanley's work on a colored system of parameters for the Stanley-Reisner ring of balanced simplicial complexes, we further investigate the infinitesimal rigidity of non-generic realization of balanced, and more broadly $\bm{a}$-balanced, simplicial complexes. Among other results, we show that for $d \geq 4$, a balanced homology $(d-1)$-manifold can be realized as an infinitesimally rigid framework in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that each vertex of color $i$ lies on the $i$th coordinate axis.
Stanley decompositions of rings of invariants and certain highest weight Harish-Chandra modules
The first half of this paper is largely expository, wherein we present a systematic combinatorial approach to the theory of polynomial (semi)invariants and multilinear invariants of several vectors and covectors, for the classical groups. This culminates in a graphical description of graded linear bases. By applying well-known results of lattice path combinatorics to Weyl's fundamental theorems of classical invariant theory, we write down Stanley decompositions and Hilbert-Poincare series in terms of families of non-intersecting lattice paths, enumerated with respect to certain corners.
In the second half of the paper, we revisit the (semi)invariants in the first half as a special case of a much broader phenomenon. On one hand, polynomial invariants of a group $H$ can be generalized to modules of covariants, i.e., $H$-equivariant polynomial functions between $H$-modules. On the other hand, from the perspective of Roger Howe's theory of dual pairs, these modules of covariants can be viewed as infinite-dimensional simple $(\mathfrak{g}, K)$-modules. This suggests an expanded program in which our goal is to apply combinatorial techniques involving lattice paths in order to write down Hilbert series for arbitrary unitarizable highest-weight $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules. As a preview of future work in this program, we present examples showing how modules of covariants -- even those which are not Cohen-Macaulay, and therefore which we would not expect to be combinatorially nice -- can be decomposed in terms of lattice paths. We also extend these methods beyond the classical groups.
New cases of the Strong Stanley Conjecture
We make progress towards understanding the structure of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $g_{λ,μ}^ν$ for products of Jack symmetric functions. Building on recent results of the second author, we are able to prove new cases of a conjecture of Stanley in which certain families of these coefficients can be expressed as a product of upper or lower hook lengths for every box in each of the partitions. In particular, we prove that conjecture in the case of a rectangular union, i.e. for $g_{μ,\bar σ}^{μ\cup m^n}$ where $\bar σ$ is the complementary partition of $σ= μ\cap m^n$ in the rectangular partition $m^n$. We give a formula for these coefficients through an explicit prescription of such choices of hooks. Lastly, we conjecture an analogue of this conjecture of Stanley holds in the case of Shifted Jack functions.
Explicit formulas for a family of hypermaps beyond the one-face case

Enumeration of hypermaps is widely studied in many fields. In particular, enumerating hypermaps with a fixed edge-type according to the number of faces and genus is one topic of great interest. However, it is challenging and explicit results mainly exist for hypermaps having one face, especially for the edge-type corresponding to maps. The first systematic study of one-face hypermaps with any fixed edge-type is the work of Jackson (Trans.~Amer.~Math.~Soc.~299, 785--801, 1987) using group characters. In 2011, Stanley obtained the generating polynomial of one-face hypermaps of any fixed edge-type expressed in terms of the backward shift operator. There are also enormous amount of work on enumerating one-face hypermaps of specific edge-types. The enumeration of hypermaps with more faces is generally much harder. In this paper, we make some progress in that regard, and obtain the generating polynomials and properties for a family of typical two-face hypermaps with almost any fixed edge-type.

Describing the equality conditions of the Alexandrov--Fenchel inequality has been a major open problem for decades. We prove that in the case of convex polytopes, this description is not in the polynomial hierarchy unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses to a finite level. This is the first hardness result for the problem, and is a complexity counterpart of the recent result by Shenfeld and van Handel (arXiv:archive/201104059), which gave a geometric characterization of the equality conditions. The proof involves Stanley's order polytopes and employs poset theoretic technology.

The order and chain polytopes, introduced by Richard P. Stanley, form a pair of Ehrhart equivalent polytopes associated to a given finite poset. A conjecture by Takayuki Hibi and Nan Li states that the $f$-vector of the chain polytope dominates the $f$-vector of the order polytope. In this paper we prove a stronger form of that conjecture for a special class of posets. More precisely, we show that the $f$-vectors increase monotonically over an admissible family of chain-order polytopes for such posets.
A class of trees determined by their chromatic symmetric functions

Stanley introduced the concept of chromatic symmetric functions of graphs which extends and refines the notion of chromatic polynomials of graphs, and asked whether trees are determined up to isomorphism by their chromatic symmetric functions. Using the technique of differentiation with respect to power-sum symmetric functions, we give a positive answer to Stanley's question for the class of trees with exactly two vertices of degree at least 3. In addition, we prove that for any tree $T$, the generalized degree sequence for subtrees of $T$ is determined by the chromatic symmetric function of $T$, providing evidence to a conjecture of Crew.
Generalized Pitman-Stanley polytope: vertices and faces

In 1999, Pitman and Stanley introduced the polytope bearing their name along with a study of its faces, lattice points, and volume. The Pitman-Stanley polytope is well-studied due to its connections to probability, parking functions, the generalized permutahedra, and flow polytopes. Its lattice points correspond to plane partitions of skew shape with entries 0 and 1. Pitman and Stanley remarked that their polytope can be generalized so that lattice points correspond to plane partitions of skew shape with entries $0,1, \ldots , m$. Since then, this generalization has been untouched. We study this generalization and show that it can also be realized as a flow polytope of a grid graph. We give multiple characterizations of its vertices in terms of plane partitions of skew shape and integer flows. For a fixed skew shape, we show that the number of vertices of this polytope is a polynomial in $m$ whose leading term, in certain cases, counts standard Young tableaux of a shifted shape. Moreover, we give formulas for the number of faces, as well as generating functions for the number of vertices.

A graphic arrangement is a subarrangement of the braid arrangement whose set of hyperplanes is determined by an undirected graph. A classical result due to Stanley, Edelman and Reiner states that a graphic arrangement is free if and only if the corresponding graph is chordal, i.e., the graph has no chordless cycle with four or more vertices. In this article we extend this result by proving that the module of logarithmic derivations of a graphic arrangement has projective dimension at most one if and only if the corresponding graph is weakly chordal, i.e., the graph and its complement have no chordless cycle with five or more vertices.

Let $K$ be a field and $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, the ring of polynomials in $n$ variables, over $K$. Using the fact that the Hilbert depth is an upper bound for the Stanley depth of a quotient of squarefree monomial ideals $0\subset I\subsetneq J\subset S$, we prove several combinatorial inequalities which involve the coefficients of the polynomial $f(t)=(1+t+\cdots+t^{m-1})^n$.

Stanley's Tree Isomorphism Conjecture posits that the chromatic symmetric function can distinguish non-isomorphic trees. While already established for caterpillars and other subclasses of trees, we prove the conjecture's validity for a new class of trees that generalize proper caterpillars, thus confirming the conjecture for a broader class of trees.

We obtain a new presentation for Specht modules whose conjugate shapes have strictly decreasing parts by introducing a linear operator on the space generated by column tabloids. The generators of the presentation are column tabloids and the relations form a proper subset of the Garnir relations of Fulton. The results in this paper extend earlier results of the authors and Stanley on Specht modules of staircase shape.

Given a permutation statistic $\operatorname{st}$, define its inverse statistic $\operatorname{ist}$ by $\operatorname{ist}(π):=\operatorname{st}(π^{-1})$. We give a general approach, based on the theory of symmetric functions, for finding the joint distribution of $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{st}_{2}$ whenever $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{st}_{2}$ are descent statistics: permutation statistics that depend only on the descent composition. We apply this method to a number of descent statistics, including the descent number, the peak number, the left peak number, the number of up-down runs, and the major index. Perhaps surprisingly, in many cases the polynomial giving the joint distribution of $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{ist}_{2}$ can be expressed as a simple sum involving products of the polynomials giving the (individual) distributions of $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{st}_{2}$. Our work leads to a rederivation of Stanley's generating function for doubly alternating permutations, as well as several conjectures concerning real-rootedness and $γ$-positivity.
