Signed shifts are generalizations of the shift map in which, interpreted as a map from the unit interval to itself sending x to the fractional part of Nx, some slopes are allowed to be negative. Permutations realized by the relative order of the elements in the orbits of these maps have been studied recently by Amigo, Archer and Elizalde. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of the permutations (also called patterns) realized by signed shifts. In the case of the negative shift, which is the signed shift having only negative slopes, we use the characterization to give an exact enumeration of these patterns. Finally, we improve the best known bounds for the number of patterns realized by the tent map, and calculate the topological entropy of signed shifts using these combinatorial methods.
A note on two conjectures that strengthen the four colour theorem
There are two conjectures concerning planar graph colourings that are strengthenings of the four colour theorem. One concerns signed graph colouring and is proposed by Máčajová, Raspaud and Škoviera. It asserts that every signed planar graph is $4$-colourable. Another concerns list colouring and is proposed by Kündgen and Ramamurthi which asserts that if $L$ is a $2$-list assignment of a planar graph $G$, then there is an $L$-colouring of $G$ such that each colour class induces a bipartite graph. In this note we prove that the first conjecture implies the second one.
Asymptotics of signed Bernoulli convolutions scaled by multinacci numbers
We study the signed Bernoulli convolution $$ν_β^{(n)}=*_{j=1}^n \left (\frac12δ_{β^{-j}}-\frac12δ_{-β^{-j}}\right ),\ n\ge 1$$ where $β>1$ satisfies $$β^m=β^{m-1}+\cdots+β+1$$ for some integer $m\ge 2$. When $m$ is odd, we show that the variation $|ν_β^{(n)}|$ coincides the unsigned Bernoulli convolution $$μ_β^{(n)}=*_{j=1}^n \left (\frac12δ_{β^{-j}}+\frac12δ_{-β^{-j}}\right ).$$ When $m$ is even, we obtain the exact asymptotic of the total variation $\|ν_β^{(n)}\|$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$.

Dvořák and Postle \cite{DP} introduced a \textit{DP-coloring} of a simple graph as a generalization of a list-coloring. They proved a Brooks' type theorem for a DP-coloring, and Bernshteyn, Kostochka and Pron \cite{BKP} extended it to a DP-coloring of multigraphs. However, detailed structure when a multigraph does not admit a DP-coloring was not specified in \cite{BKP}. In this note, we make this point clear and give the complete structure. This is also motivated by the relation to signed coloring of signed graphs.

DP-coloring of a simple graph is a generalization of list coloring, and also a generalization of signed coloring of signed graphs. It is known that for each $k \in \{3, 4, 5, 6\}$, every planar graph without $C_k$ is 4-choosable. Furthermore, Jin, Kang, and Steffen \cite{JKS} showed that for each $k \in \{3, 4, 5, 6\}$, every signed planar graph without $C_k$ is signed 4-choosable. In this paper, we show that for each $k \in \{3, 4, 5, 6\}$, every planar graph without $C_k$ is 4-DP-colorable, which is an extension of the above results.

A signed graph $Γ$ is said to be determined by its spectrum if every signed graph with the same spectrum as $Γ$ is switching isomorphic with $Γ$. Here it is proved that the path $P_n$, interpreted as a signed graph, is determined by its spectrum if and only if $n\equiv 0, 1$, or 2 (mod 4), unless $n\in\{8, 13, 14, 17, 29\}$, or $n=3$.

Combinatorial characterisations are obtained of symmetric and anti-symmetric infinitesimal rigidity for two-dimensional frameworks with reflectional symmetry in the case of norms where the unit ball is a quadrilateral and where the reflection acts freely on the vertex set. At the framework level, these characterisations are given in terms of induced monochrome subgraph decompositions, and at the graph level they are given in terms of sparsity counts and recursive construction sequences for the corresponding signed quotient graphs.
Bidirected Graphs I: Signed General Kotzig-Lovász Decomposition

This paper is the first from a series of papers that establish a common analogue of the strong component and basilica decompositions for bidirected graphs. A bidirected graph is a graph in which a sign $+$ or $-$ is assigned to each end of each edge, and therefore is a common generalization of digraphs and signed graphs. Unlike digraphs, the reachabilities between vertices by directed trails and paths are not equal in general bidirected graphs. In this paper, we set up an analogue of the strong connectivity theory for bidirected graphs regarding directed trails, motivated by factor theory. We define the new concepts of {\em circular connectivity} and {\em circular components} as generalizations of the strong connectivity and strong components. In our main theorem, we characterize the inner structure of each circular component; we define a certain binary relation between vertices in terms of the circular connectivity and prove that this relation is an equivalence relation. The nontrivial aspect of this structure arises from directed trails starting and ending with the same sign, and is therefore characteristic to bidirected graphs that are not digraphs. This structure can be considered as an analogue of the general Kotzig-Lovász decomposition, a known canonical decomposition in $1$-factor theory. From our main theorem, we also obtain a new result in $b$-factor theory, namely, a $b$-factor analogue of the general Kotzig-Lovász decomposition.
Predicting Positive and Negative Links with Noisy Queries: Theory & Practice

Social networks involve both positive and negative relationships, which can be captured in signed graphs. The {\em edge sign prediction problem} aims to predict whether an interaction between a pair of nodes will be positive or negative. We provide theoretical results for this problem that motivate natural improvements to recent heuristics.
The edge sign prediction problem is related to correlation clustering; a positive relationship means being in the same cluster. We consider the following model for two clusters: we are allowed to query any pair of nodes whether they belong to the same cluster or not, but the answer to the query is corrupted with some probability $0<q<\frac{1}{2}$. Let $δ=1-2q$ be the bias. We provide an algorithm that recovers all signs correctly with high probability in the presence of noise with $O(\frac{n\log n}{δ^2}+\frac{\log^2 n}{δ^6})$ queries. This is the best known result for this problem for all but tiny $δ$, improving on the recent work of Mazumdar and Saha \cite{mazumdar2017clustering}. We also provide an algorithm that performs $O(\frac{n\log n}{δ^4})$ queries, and uses breadth first search as its main algorithmic primitive. While both the running time and the number of queries for this algorithm are sub-optimal, our result relies on novel theoretical techniques, and naturally suggests the use of edge-disjoint paths as a feature for predicting signs in online social networks. Correspondingly, we experiment with using edge disjoint $s-t$ paths of short length as a feature for predicting the sign of edge $(s,t)$ in real-world signed networks. Empirical findings suggest that the use of such paths improves the classification accuracy, especially for pairs of nodes with no common neighbors.

We study a new discrete-time dynamical system on circle patterns with the combinatorics of the square grid. This dynamics, called Miquel dynamics, relies on Miquel's six circles theorem. We provide a coordinatization of the appropriate space of circle patterns on which the dynamics acts and use it to derive local recurrence formulas. Isoradial circle patterns arise as periodic points of Miquel dynamics. Furthermore, we prove that certain signed sums of intersection angles are preserved by the dynamics. Finally, when the initial circle pattern is spatially biperiodic with a fundamental domain of size two by two, we show that the appropriately normalized motion of intersection points of circles takes place along an explicit quartic curve.
Oriented Hypergraphic Matrix-tree Type Theorems and Bidirected Minors via Boolean Order Ideals

Restrictions of incidence-preserving path maps produce an oriented hypergraphic All Minors Matrix-tree Theorems for Laplacian and adjacency matrices. The images of these maps produce a locally signed graphic, incidence generalization, of cycle covers and basic figures that correspond to incidence-k-forests. When restricted to bidirected graphs the natural partial ordering of maps results in disjoint signed boolean lattices whose minor calculations correspond to principal order ideals. As an application, (1) the determinant formula of a signed graphic Laplacian is reclaimed and shown to be determined by the maximal positive-circle-free elements, and (2) spanning trees are equivalent to single-element order ideals.

We define a new statistic on any Weyl group which we call the odd length and which reduces, for Weyl groups of types $A$, $B$, and $D$, the the statistics by the same name that have already been defined and studied in [10], [13], [14], and [3]. We show that the signed (by length) generating function of the odd length always factors nicely except possibly in type $E_8$, and we obtain multivariate analogues of these factorizations in types $B$ and $D$.

Craigen introduced and studied signed group Hadamard matrices extensively and eventually provided an asymptotic existence result for Hadamard matrices. Following his lead, Ghaderpour introduced signed group orthogonal designs and showed an asymptotic existence result for orthogonal designs and consequently Hadamard matrices. In this paper, we construct some interesting families of orthogonal designs using signed group orthogonal designs to show the capability of signed group orthogonal designs in generation of different types of orthogonal designs.

A weighted graph $G^ω$ consists of a simple graph $G$ with a weight $ω$, which is a mapping,$ω$: $E(G)\rightarrow\mathbb{Z}\backslash\{0\}$. A signed graph is a graph whose edges are labeled with $-1$ or $1$. In this paper, we characterize graphs which have a sign such that their signed adjacency matrix has full rank, and graphs which have a weight such that their weighted adjacency matrix does not have full rank. We show that for any arbitrary simple graph $G$, there is a sign $σ$ so that $G^σ$ has full rank if and only if $G$ has a $\{1,2\}$-factor. We also show that for a graph $G$, there is a weight $ω$ so that $G^ω$ does not have full rank if and only if $G$ has at least two $\{1,2\}$-factors.

It is a classical result that the parity-balance of the number of weak excedances of all permutations (derangements, respectively) of length $n$ is the Euler number $E_n$, alternating in sign, if $n$ is odd (even, respectively). Josuat-Vergès obtained a $q$-analog of the results respecting the number of crossings of a permutation. One of the goals in this paper is to extend the results to the permutations (derangements, respectively) of types B and D, on the basis of the joint distribution in statistics excedances, crossings and the number of negative entries obtained by Corteel, Josuat-Vergès and Kim.
Springer numbers are analogous Euler numbers that count the alternating permutations of type B, called snakes. Josuat-Vergès derived bivariate polynomials $Q_n(t,q)$ and $R_n(t,q)$ as generalized Euler numbers via successive $q$-derivatives and multiplications by $t$ on polynomials in $t$. The other goal in this paper is to give a combinatorial interpretation of $Q_n(t,q)$ and $R_n(t,q)$ as the enumerators of the snakes with restrictions.
A note on the vertex arboricity of signed graphs
A signed tree-coloring of a signed graph $(G,σ)$ is a vertex coloring $c$ so that $G^{c}(i,\pm)$ is a forest for every $i\in c(u)$ and $u\in V(G)$, where $G^{c}(i,\pm)$ is the subgraph of $(G,σ)$ whose vertex set is the set of vertices colored by $i$ or $-i$ and edge set is the set of positive edges with two end-vertices colored both by $i$ or both by $-i$, along with the set of negative edges with one end-vertex colored by $i$ and the other colored by $-i$. If $c$ is a function from $V(G)$ to $M_n$, where $M_n$ is $\{\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots,\pm k\}$ if $n=2k$, and $\{0,\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots,\pm k\}$ if $n=2k+1$, then $c$ a signed tree-$n$-coloring of $(G,σ)$. The minimum integer $n$ such that $(G,σ)$ admits a signed tree-$n$-coloring is the signed vertex arboricity of $(G,σ)$, denoted by $va(G,σ)$. In this paper, we first show that two switching equivalent signed graphs have the same signed vertex arboricity, and then prove that $va(G,σ)\leq 3$ for every balanced signed triangulation and for every edge-maximal $K_5$-minor-free graph with balanced signature. This generalizes the well-known result that the vertex arboricity of every planar graph is at most 3.
New concept of connection in signed graphs

In a signed graph each edge has a sign, $+1$ or $-1$. We introduce in the present paper a new definition of connection in a signed graph by the existence of both positive and negative chains between vertices. We prove some results and properties of this definition, such as sign components, sign articulation vertices, and sign isthmi, and we compare them to corresponding graph and signed-graphic matroid properties. We apply our results to signed graphs without positive cycles. For signed graphs in which every edge is negative our properties become parity properties.
The strong ring of simplicial complexes
We define a ring R of geometric objects G generated by finite abstract simplicial complexes. To every G belongs Hodge Laplacian H as the square of the Dirac operator determining its cohomology and a unimodular connection matrix L). The sum of the matrix entries of the inverse of L is the Euler characteristic. The spectra of H as well as inductive dimension add under multiplication while the spectra of L multiply. The nullity of the Hodge of H are the Betti numbers which can now be signed. The map assigning to G its Poincare polynomial is a ring homomorphism from R the polynomials. Especially the Euler characteristic is a ring homomorphism. Also Wu characteristic produces a ring homomorphism. The Kuenneth correspondence between cohomology groups is explicit as a basis for the product can be obtained from a basis of the factors. The product in R produces the strong product for the connection graphs and leads to tensor products of connection Laplacians. The strong ring R is also a subring of the full Stanley-Reisner ring S Every element G can be visualized by its Barycentric refinement graph G1 and its connection graph G'. Gauss-Bonnet, Poincare-Hopf or the Brouwer-Lefschetz extend to the strong ring. The isomorphism of R with a subring of the strong Sabidussi ring shows that the multiplicative primes in R are the simplicial complexes and that every connected element in the strong ring has a unique prime factorization. The Sabidussi ring is dual to the Zykov ring, in which the Zykov join is the addition. The connection Laplacian of the d-dimensional lattice remains invertible in the infinite volume limit: there is a mass gap in any dimension.

A Weyl arrangement is the hyperplane arrangement defined by a root system. Arnold and Saito proved that every Weyl arrangement is free. The Weyl subarrangements of type $A_{\ell}$ are represented by simple graphs. Stanley gave a characterization of freeness for this type of arrangements in terms of thier graph. In addition, The Weyl subarrangements of type $B_{\ell}$ can be represented by signed graphs. A characterization of freeness for them is not known. However, characterizations of freeness for a few restricted classes are known. For instance, Edelman and Reiner characterized the freeness of the arrangements between type $ A_{\ell-1} $ and type $ B_{\ell} $. In this paper, we give a characterization of the freeness and supersolvability of the Weyl subarrangements of type $B_{\ell}$ under certain assumption.
