A central limit theorem in the framework of the Thompson group $F$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We discuss a central limit theorem in the framework of the group algebra of the Thompson group $F$. We consider the sequence of self-adjoint elements given by $a_n=\frac{g_n+g_n^{*}}{\sqrt{2}}$ in the noncommutative probability space $(\mathbb{C}(F),\varphi)$, where the expectation functional $\varphi$ is the trace associated to the left regular representation of $F$, and the $g_n$-s are the generators of $F$ in its standard infinite presentation. We show that the limit law of the sequence $s_n = \frac{a_0+\cdots+a_{n-1}}{\sqrt{n}}$ is the standard normal distribution.
Ergodic averages for sparse sequences along primes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages along sparse sequences evaluated at prime numbers. Our sequences arise from smooth and well-behaved functions that have polynomial growth. Central to this topic is a comparison result between standard Cesáro averages along positive integers and averages weighted by the (modified) von Mangoldt function. The main ingredients are a recent result of Matomäki, Shao, Tao and Teräväinen on the Gowers uniformity of the latter function in short intervals, a lifting argument that allows one to pass from actions of integers to flows, a simultaneous (variable) polynomial approximation in appropriate short intervals, and some quantitative equidistribution results for the former polynomials. We derive numerous applications in multiple recurrence, additive combinatorics, and equidistribution in nilmanifolds along primes. In particular, we deduce that any set of positive density contains arithmetic progressions with step $\lfloor p^c \rfloor$, where $c$ is a positive non-integer and $p$ denotes a prime, establishing a conjecture of Frantzikinakis.

A shorter proof of the path-width theorem
A graph has {\em path-width} at most $w$ if it can be built from a sequence of graphs each with at most $w+1$ vertices, by overlapping consecutive terms. Every graph with path-width at least $w-1$ contains every $w$-vertex forest as a minor: this was originally proved by Bienstock, Robertson, Thomas and the author, and was given a short proof by Diestel. Here we give a proof even shorter and simpler than that of Diestel.

From Erdos-Renyi graphs to Linial-Meshulam complexes via the multineighbor construction
The $m$-neighbor complex of a graph is the simplicial complex in which faces are sets of vertices with at least $m$ common neighbors. We consider these complexes for Erdos-Renyi random graphs and find that for certain explicit families of parameters the resulting complexes are with high probability $(t-1)$-dimensional with all $(t-2)$-faces and each $(t-1)$-face present with a fixed probability. Unlike the Linial-Meshulam measure on the same complexes there can be correlations between pairs of $(t-1)$-faces but we conjecture that the two measures converge in total variation for certain parameter sequences.

Thresholds for zero-sums with small cross numbers in abelian groups
For an additive group $Γ$ the sequence $S = (g_1, \ldots, g_t)$ of elements of $Γ$ is a zero-sum sequence if $g_1 + \cdots + g_t = 0_Γ$. The cross number of $S$ is defined to be the sum $\sum_{i=1}^k 1/|g_i|$, where $|g_i|$ denotes the order of $g_i$ in $Γ$. Call $S$ good if it contains a zero-sum subsequence with cross number at most 1. In 1993, Geroldinger proved that if $Γ$ is abelian then every length $|Γ|$ sequence of its elements is good, generalizing a 1989 result of Lemke and Kleitman that had proved an earlier conjecture of Erdős and Lemke. In 1989 Chung re-proved the Lemke and Kleitman result by applying a theorem of graph pebbling, and in 2005, Elledge and Hurlbert used graph pebbling to re-prove and generalize Geroldinger's result. Here we use probabilistic theorems from graph pebbling to derive a threshold version of Geroldinger's theorem for abelian groups of a certain form. Specifically, we prove that if $p_1, \ldots, p_d$ are (not necessarily distinct) primes and $Γ_k$ has the form $\prod_{i=1}^d {\mathbb Z}_{p_i^k}$ then there is a function $τ=τ(k)$ (which we specify in Theorem 4) with the following property: if $t-τ\rightarrow\infty$ as $k\rightarrow\infty$ then the probability that $S$ is good in $Γ_k$ tends to 1.

Sums of products of binomial coefficients mod 2 and 2-regular sequences
Wu showed that certain sums of products of binomial coefficients modulo 2 are given by the run length transforms of several famous linear recurrence sequences, such as the positive integers, the Fibonacci numbers, the extended Lucas numbers, and Narayana's cows sequence. In this paper we show that the run length transform of such sequences are 2-regular sequences. This allows us to obtain Wu's results and some new ones using the computer program Walnut, eliminating the need for long technical proofs.

Arithmetical subword complexity of automatic sequences
We fully classify automatic sequences $a$ over a finite alphabet $Ω$ with the property that each word over $Ω$ appears is $a$ along an arithmetic progression. Using the terminology introduced by Avgustinovich, Fon-Der-Flaass and Frid, these are the automatic sequences with the maximal possible arithmetical subword complexity. More generally, we obtain an asymptotic formula for arithmetical (and even polynomial) subword complexity of a given automatic sequence $a$.

Thresholds for Pebbling on Grids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a connected graph $G$ and a configuration of $t$ pebbles on the vertices of G, a $q$-pebbling step consists of removing $q$ pebbles from a vertex, and adding a single pebble to one of its neighbors. Given a vector $\bf{q}=(q_1,\ldots,q_d)$, $\bf{q}$-pebbling consists of allowing $q_i$-pebbling in coordinate $i$. A distribution of pebbles is called solvable if it is possible to transfer at least one pebble to any specified vertex of $G$ via a finite sequence of pebbling steps. In this paper, we determine the weak threshold for $\bf{q}$-pebbling on the sequence of grids $[n]^d$ for fixed $d$ and $\bf{q}$, as $n\to\infty$. Further, we determine the strong threshold for $q$-pebbling on the sequence of paths of increasing length. A fundamental tool in these proofs is a new notion of centrality, and a sufficient condition for solvability based on the well used pebbling weight functions; we believe this weight lemma to be the first result of its kind, and may be of independent interest. These theorems improve recent results of Czygrinow and Hurlbert, and Godbole, Jablonski, Salzman, and Wierman. They are the generalizations to the random setting of much earlier results of Chung. In addition, we give a short counterexample showing that the threshold version of a well known conjecture of Graham does not hold. This uses a result for hypercubes due to Czygrinow and Wagner.
Two Games on Arithmetic Functions: SALIQUANT and NONTOTIENT
We investigate the Sprague-Grundy sequences for two normal-play impartial games based on arithmetic functions, first described by Iannucci and Larsson in \cite{sum}. In each game, the set of positions is N (natural numbers). In saliquant, the options are to subtract a non-divisor. Here we obtain several nice number theoretic lemmas, a fundamental theorem, and two conjectures about the eventual density of Sprague-Grundy values. In nontotient, the only option is to subtract the number of relatively prime residues. Here are able to calculate certain Sprague-Grundy values, and start to understand an appropriate class function.

The repetition threshold of episturmian sequences
The repetition threshold of a class $C$ of infinite $d$-ary sequences is the smallest real number $r$ such that in the class $C$ there exists a sequence that avoids $e$-powers for all $e> r$. This notion was introduced by Dejean in 1972 for the class of all sequences over a $d$-letter alphabet. Thanks to the effort of many authors over more than 30 years, the precise value of the repetition threshold in this class is known for every $d \in \mathbb N$. The repetition threshold for the class of Sturmian sequences was determined by Carpi and de Luca in 2000. Sturmian sequences may be equivalently defined in various ways, therefore there exist many generalizations to larger alphabets. Rampersad, Shallit and Vandome in 2020 initiated a study of the repetition threshold for the class of balanced sequences -- one of the possible generalizations of Sturmian sequences. Here, we focus on the class of $d$-ary episturmian sequences -- another generalization of Sturmian sequences introduced by Droubay, Justin and Pirillo in 2001. We show that the repetition threshold of this class is reached by the $d$-bonacci sequence and its value equals $2+\frac{1}{t-1}$, where $t>1$ is the unique positive root of the polynomial $x^d-x^{d-1}- \cdots -x-1$.

Hardinian Arrays
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2014, R.H. Hardin contributed a family of sequences about king-moves on an array to the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). The sequences were recently noticed in an automated search of the OEIS by Kauers and Koutschan, who conjectured a recurrence for one of them. We prove their conjecture as well as some older conjectures stated in the OEIS entries. We also have some new conjectures for the asymptotics of Hardin's sequences.

Symmetries and intrinsic vs. extrinsic properties of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0, n}$
We consider the following question: How much of the combinatorial structure determining properties of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ is ``intrinsic'' and how much new information do we obtain from using properties specific to this space? Our approach is to study the effect of the $S_n$-action. Apart from being a natural action to consider, it is known that this action does not extend to other wonderful compactifications associated to the $A_{n - 2}$ hyperplane arrangement. We find the differences in intersection patterns of faces on associahedra and permutohedra which characterize the failure to extend to other compactifications and show that this is reflected by most terms of degree $\ge 2$ of the cohomology/Chow ring. Even from a combinatorial perspective, terms of degree 1 are more naturally related to geometric properties. In particular, imposing $S_n$-invariance implies that many of the log concave sequences obtained from degree 1 Hodge--Riemann relations (and all of them for $n \le 2000$) on the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ can be restricted to those with a special recursive structure. A conjectural result implies that this is true for all $n$. Elements of these sequences can be expressed as polynomials in quantum Littlewood--Richardson coefficients multiplied by terms such as partition components, factorials, and multinomial coefficients. After dividing by binomial coefficients, polynomials with these numbers as coefficients can be interepreted in terms of volumes or resultants. Finally, we find a connection between the geometry of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ and higher degree Hodge--Riemann relations of other rings via Toeplitz matrices.

Real-rootedness of the type A minuscule polynomials
We prove two recent conjectures of Bourn and Erickson (2023) regarding the real-rootedness of a certain family of polynomials $N_n(t)$ as well as the sum of their coefficients. These polynomials arise as the numerators of generating functions in the context of the discrete one-dimensional earth mover's distance (EMD) and have also connection to the Wiener index of minuscule lattices. We also prove that the coefficients of $N_n(x)$ are asymptotically normal, the coefficient matrix of $N_n(x)$ is totally positive and the polynomial sequence $N_n(x)$'s is $x$-log-concave.

On Integer Sets Excluding Permutation Pattern Waves
We study Ramsey-type problems on sets avoiding sequences whose consecutive differences have a fixed relative order. For a given permutation $π\in S_k$, a $π$-wave is a sequence $x_1 < \cdots < x_{k+1}$ such that $x_{i+1} - x_i > x_{j+1} - x_j$ if and only if $π(i) > π(j)$. A subset of $[n] = \{1,\ldots,n\}$ is $π$-wave-free if it does not contain any $π$-wave. Our first main result shows that the size of the largest $π$-wave-free subset of $[n]$ is $O\left((\log n)^{k-1}\right)$. We then classify all permutations for which this bound is tight. In the cases where it is not tight, we prove stronger polylogarithmic upper bounds. We then apply these bounds to a closely related coloring problem studied by Landman and Robertson.

Laplacian $\{-1,0,1\}$- and $\{-1,1\}$-diagonalizable graphs
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 704:309-339, 2025 • View Publication • BIB
A graph is called "Laplacian integral" if the eigenvalues of its Laplacian matrix are all integers. We investigate the subset of these graphs whose Laplacian is furthermore diagonalized by a matrix with entries coming from a fixed set, in particular, the sets $\{-1,0,1\}$ or $\{-1,1\}$. Such graphs include as special cases the recently-investigated families of "Hadamard-diagonalizable" and "weakly Hadamard-diagonalizable" graphs. As a combinatorial tool to aid in our investigation, we introduce a family of vectors that we call "balanced", which generalizes totally balanced partitions, regular sequences, and complete partitions. We show that balanced vectors completely characterize which graph complements and complete multipartite graphs are $\{-1,0,1\}$-diagonalizable, and we furthermore prove results on diagonalizability of the Cartesian product, disjoint union, and join of graphs. Particular attention is paid to the $\{-1,0,1\}$- and $\{-1,1\}$-diagonalizability of the complete graphs and complete multipartite graphs. Finally, we provide a complete list of all simple, connected graphs on nine or fewer vertices that are $\{-1,0,1\}$- or $\{-1,1\}$-diagonalizable.

Planar networks and simple Lie groups beyond type A
Published • View Publication • BIB
The general linear group $GL_{n}$, along with its adjoint simple group $PGL_n$, can be described by means of weighted planar networks. In this paper we give a network description for simple Lie groups of types $B$ and $C$. The corresponding networks are axially symmetric modulo a sequence of cluster mutations along the axis of symmetry. We extend to this setting the result of Gekhtman, Shapiro, and Vainshtein on the Poisson property of Postnikov's boundary measurement map. We also show that $B$ and $C$ type networks with positive weights parametrize the totally nonnegative part of the respective group. Finally, we construct network parametrizations of double Bruhat cells in symplectic and odd-dimensional orthogonal groups, and identify the corresponding face weights with Fock-Goncharov cluster coordinates.
Combinatorial Identities for Vacillating Tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
Vacillating tableaux are sequences of integer partitions that satisfy specific conditions. The concept of vacillating tableaux stems from the representation theory of the partition algebra and the combinatorial theory of crossings and nestings of matchings and set partitions. In this paper, we further investigate the enumeration of vacillating tableaux and derive multiple combinatorial identities and integer sequences relating to the number of vacillating tableaux, simplified vacillating tableaux, and limiting vacillating tableaux.

Packing a Degree Sequence Realization With A Graph
Two simple $n$-vertex graphs $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$, with respective maximum degrees $Δ_{1}$ and $Δ_{2}$, are said to pack if $G_{1}$ is isomorphic to a subgraph of the complement of $G_{2}$. The BEC conjecture by Bollobás, Eldridge, and Catlin, states that if $(Δ_{1}+1)(Δ_{2}+1)\leq n+1$, then $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$ pack. The BEC conjecture is true when $Δ_{1}=2$ and has been confirmed for a few other classes of graphs with various conditions on $Δ_{1}$, $Δ_{2}$, or $n$. We show that if \[(Δ_{1}+1)(Δ_{2}+1)\leq n+\min\{Δ_{1},Δ_{2}\},\] then there exists a simple graph with an identical degree sequence as $G_{1}$ that packs with $G_{2}$. However, except for a few cases, we show that this bound is not sharp. As a consequence of our work, we confirm the BEC conjecture if $G_{1}$ is the vertex disjoint union of a unigraph and a forest $F$ such that either $F$ has at least $Δ_{2}+1$ components or at most $2Δ_{2}-1$ edges.
Constructing and sampling partite, $3$-uniform hypergraphs with given degree sequence
Published • View Publication • BIB
Partite, $3$-uniform hypergraphs are $3$-uniform hypergraphs in which each hyperedge contains exactly one point from each of the $3$ disjoint vertex classes. We consider the degree sequence problem of partite, $3$-uniform hypergraphs, that is, to decide if such a hypergraph with prescribed degree sequences exists. We prove that this decision problem is NP-complete in general, and give a polynomial running time algorithm for third almost-regular degree sequences, that is, when each degree in one of the vertex classes is $k$ or $k-1$ for some fixed $k$, and there is no restriction for the other two vertex classes. We also consider the sampling problem, that is, to uniformly sample partite, $3$-uniform hypergraphs with prescribed degree sequences. We propose a Parallel Tempering method, where the hypothetical energy of the hypergraphs measures the deviation from the prescribed degree sequence. The method has been implemented and tested on synthetic and real data. It can also be applied for $χ^2$ testing of contingency tables. We have shown that this hypergraph-based $χ^2$ test is more sensitive than the standard $χ^2$ test. The extra sensitivity is especially advantageous on small data sets, where the proposed Parallel Tempering method shows promising performance.
On nonrepetitive colorings of paths and cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
We say that a sequence $a_1 \cdots a_{2t}$ of integers is repetitive if $a_i = a_{i+t}$ for every $i\in\{1,\ldots,t\}$. A walk in a graph $G$ is a sequence $v_1 \cdots v_r$ of vertices of $G$ in which $v_iv_{i+1}\in E(G)$ for every $i\in\{1,\ldots,r-1\}$. Given a $k$-coloring $c\colon V(G)\to\{1,\ldots,k\}$ of $V(G)$, we say that $c$ is walk-nonrepetitive (resp. stroll-nonrepetitive) if for every $t\in\mathbb{N}$ and every walk $v_1\cdots v_{2t}$ the sequence $c(v_1) \cdots c(v_{2t})$ is not repetitive unless $v_i = v_{i+t}$ for every $i\in\{1,\ldots,t\}$ (resp. unless $v_i = v_{i+t}$ for some $i\in\{1,\ldots,t\}$). The walk (resp. stroll) chromatic number $σ(G)$ (resp. $ρ(G)$) of $G$ is the minimum $k$ for which $G$ has a walk-nonrepetitive (resp. stroll-nonrepetitive) $k$-coloring. Let $C_n$ and $P_n$ denote, respectively, the cycle and the path with $n$ vertices. In this paper we present three results that answer questions posed by Barát and Wood in 2008: (i) $σ(C_n) = 4$ whenever $n\geq 4$ and $n \notin\{5,7\}$; (ii) $ρ(P_n) = 3$ if $3\leq n\leq 21$ and $ρ(P_n) = 4$ otherwise; and (iii) $ρ(C_n) = 4$, whenever $n \notin\{3,4,6,8\}$, and $ρ(C_n) = 3$ otherwise. In particular, (ii) improves bounds on $n$ obtained by Tao in 2023.
