Recognition of chordal graphs and cographs which are Cover-Incomparability graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 26:3, Discrete Algorithms (November 15, 2024) dmtcs:11657 • View Publication • BIB
Cover-Incomparability graphs (C-I graphs) are an interesting class of graphs from posets. A C-I graph is a graph from a poset $P=(V,\le)$ with vertex set $V$, and the edge-set is the union of edge sets of the cover graph and the incomparability graph of the poset. The recognition of the C-I graphs is known to be NP-complete (Maxová et al., Order 26(3), 229--236(2009)). In this paper, we prove that chordal graphs having at most two independent simplicial vertices are exactly the chordal graphs which are also C-I graphs. A similar result is obtained for cographs as well. Using the structural results of these graphs, we derive linear time recognition algorithms for chordal graphs and cographs which are C-I graphs.
Toggling, rowmotion, and homomesy on interval-closed sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Interval-closed sets of a poset are a natural superset of order ideals. We initiate the study of interval-closed sets of finite posets from enumerative and dynamical perspectives. In particular, we use the generalized toggle group to define rowmotion on interval-closed sets as a product of these toggles. Our main theorem is an intricate global characterization of rowmotion on interval-closed sets, which we show is equivalent to the toggling definition. We also study specific posets; we enumerate interval-closed sets of ordinal sums of antichains, completely describe their rowmotion orbits, and prove a homomesy result involving the signed cardinality statistic. Finally, we study interval-closed sets of product of chains posets, proving further results about enumeration and homomesy.

A $Q$-polynomial structure for the Attenuated Space poset $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The goal of this article is to display a $Q$-polynomial structure for the Attenuated Space poset $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$. The poset $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$ is briefly described as follows. Start with an $(N+M)$-dimensional vector space $H$ over a finite field with $q$ elements. Fix an $M$-dimensional subspace $h$ of $H$. The vertex set $X$ of $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$ consists of the subspaces of $H$ that have zero intersection with $h$. The partial order on $X$ is the inclusion relation. The $Q$-polynomial structure involves two matrices $A, A^* \in {\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$ with the following entries. For $y, z \in X$ the matrix $A$ has $(y,z)$-entry $1$ (if $y$ covers $z$); $q^{{\rm dim}\,y}$ (if $z$ covers $y$); and 0 (if neither of $y,z$ covers the other). The matrix $A^*$ is diagonal, with $(y,y)$-entry $q^{-{\rm dim}\,y}$ for all $y\in X$. By construction, $A^*$ has $N+1$ eigenspaces. By construction, $A$ acts on these eigenspaces in a (block) tridiagonal fashion. We show that $A$ is diagonalizable, with $2N+1$ eigenspaces. We show that $A^*$ acts on these eigenspaces in a (block) tridiagonal fashion. Using this action, we show that $A$ is $Q$-polynomial. We show that $A, A^*$ satisfy a pair of relations called the tridiagonal relations. We consider the subalgebra $T$ of ${\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$ generated by $A, A^*$. We show that $A,A^*$ act on each irreducible $T$-module as a Leonard pair.
Whitney Twins, Whitney Duals, and Operadic Partition Posets
We say that a pair of nonnegative integer sequences $(\{a_k\}_{k\geq 0},\{b_k\}_{k\geq 0})$ is Whitney-realizable if there exists a poset $P$ for which (the absolute values) of the Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are given by the numbers $a_k$ and $b_k$ respectively. The pair is said to be Whitney-dualizable if, in addition, there exists another poset $Q$ for which their Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are instead given by $b_k$ and $a_k$ respectively. In this case, we say that $P$ and $Q$ are Whitney duals. We use results on Whitney duality, recently developed by the first two authors, to exhibit a family of sequences which allows for multiple realizations and Whitney-dual realizations. More precisely, we study edge labelings for the families of posets of pointed partitions $Π_n^{\bullet}$ and weighted partitions $Π_n^{w}$ which are associated to the operads $\mathcal{P}erm$ and $\mathcal{C}om^2$ respectively. The first author and Wachs proved that these two families of posets share the same pair of Whitney numbers. We find EW-labelings for $Π_n^{\bullet}$ and $Π_n^{w}$ and use them to show that they also share multiple nonisomorphic Whitney dual posets. In addition to EW-labelings, we also find two new EL-labelings for $Π_n^\bullet$ answering a question of Chapoton and Vallette. Using these EL-labelings of $Π_n^\bullet$, and an EL-labeling of $Π_n^w$ introduced by the first author and Wachs, we give combinatorial descriptions of bases for the operads $\mathcal{P}re\mathcal{L}ie, \mathcal{P}erm,$ and $\mathcal{C}om^2$. We also show that the bases for $\mathcal{P}erm$ and $\mathcal{C}om^2$ are PBW bases.

Macaulay Posets and Rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Macaulay posets are posets in which an analog of the Kruskal-Katona Theorem holds. Macaulay rings (also called Macaulay-Lex rings) are rings in which an analog of Macaulay's Theorem for lex ideals holds. The study of both of these objects started with Macaulay almost a century ago. Since then, these two branches have developed separately over the past century, with the last link being the Clements-Lindström Theorem. For every ring that is the quotient of a polynomial ring by a homogeneous ideal we define the poset of monomials. Under certain conditions, we prove a Macaulay Correspondence Theorem, a ring is Macaulay if and only if its poset of monomials is Macaulay. Furthermore, the tensor product of rings corresponds to the Cartesian product of the posets of monomials. This allows us to transfer results between rings and posets. By using this translation, we give several answers to a problem posed by Mermin and Peeva, a positive answer to Hoefel's question about applying Macaulay poset theory to ring theory, and deduce several other results in algebra and combinatorics. A new proof of the Mermin-Murai Theorem on colored square free rings is presented by using star posets. We extend the Mermin-Murai Theorem to rings that are not square free. Using a result from Mermin and Peeva we give an answer to a question posed by Bezrukov and Leck. Some results of Chong also give answers to the Bezrukov-Leck problem. All of these results have a common feature. They involve the tensor product of rings whose Hasse graphs of the poset of monomials are trees. We call such rings, tree rings. We give a classification of Macaulay rings that are the tensor product of a tree ring. Finally, we show that there are Macaulay rings that are not the tensor product of tree rings, and present the first examples of Macaulay rings that are not quotients by a monomial ideal and not quotients by a toric ideal.

Reflect-Push Methods Part I: Two Dimensional Techniques
Published • View Publication • BIB
We determine all maximum weight downsets in the product of two chains, where the weight function is a strictly increasing function of the rank. Many discrete isoperimetric problems can be reduced to the maximum weight downset problem. Our results generalize Lindsay's edge-isoperimetric theorem in two dimensions in several directions. They also imply and strengthen (in several directions) a result of Ahlswede and Katona concerning graphs with maximal number of adjacent pairs of edges. We find all optimal shifted graphs in the Ahlswede-Katona problem. Furthermore, the results of Ahlswede-Katona are extended to posets with a rank increasing and rank constant weight function. Our results also strengthen a special case of a recent result by Keough and Radcliffe concerning graphs with the fewest matchings. All of these results are achieved by applications of a key lemma that we call the reflect-push method. This method is geometric and combinatorial. Most of the literature on edge-isoperimetric inequalities focuses on finding a solution, and there are no general methods for finding all possible solutions. Our results give a general approach for finding all compressed solutions for the above edge-isoperimetric problems. By using the Ahlswede-Cai local-global principle, one can conclude that lexicographic solutions are optimal for many cases of higher dimensional isoperimetric problems. With this and our two dimensional results we can prove Lindsay's edge-isoperimetric inequality in any dimension. Furthermore, our results show that lexicographic solutions are the unique solutions for which compression techniques can be applied in this general setting.
Two classes of posets with real-rooted chain polynomials
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 31 (2024), Research Paper 4.16, 22pp (electronic) • View Publication • BIB
The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. It has been a challenging open problem to determine which posets have real-rooted chain polynomials. Two new classes of posets, namely those of all rank-selected subposets of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and all noncrossing partition lattices associated to finite Coxeter groups, are shown to have this property. The first result generalizes one of Brenti and Welker. As a special case, the descent enumerator of permutations of the set $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$ which have ascents at specified positions is shown to be real-rooted, hence log-concave and unimodal, and a good estimate for the location of the peak is deduced.

Regular and semi-regular representations of groups by posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
By a result of Babai, with finitely many exceptions, every group $G$ admits a semi-regular poset representation with three orbits, that is, a poset $P$ with automorphism group $\textrm{Aut}(P) \simeq G$ such that the action of $\textrm{Aut}(P)$ on the underlying set is free and with three orbits. Among finite groups, only the trivial group and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ have a regular poset representation (i.e. semi-regular with one orbit), however many infinite groups admit such a representation. In this paper we study non-necessarily finite groups which have a regular representation or a semi-regular representation with two orbits. We prove that if $G$ admits a Cayley graph which is locally the Cayley graph of a free group, then it has a semi-regular representation of height 1 with two orbits. In this case we will see that any extension of the integers by $G$ admits a regular representation. Applications are given to finite simple groups, hyperbolic groups, random groups and indicable groups.

Hyperbolic polynomials and starved polytopes
We study sets of univariate hyperbolic polynomials that share the same first few coefficients and show that they have a natural combinatorial description akin to that of polytopes. We define a stratification of such sets in terms of root arrangements of hyperbolic polynomials and show that any stratum is either empty, a point or of maximal dimension and in the latter case we characterise its relative interior. This is used to show that the poset of strata is a graded, atomic and coatomic lattice and to provide an algorithm for computing which root arrangements are realised in such sets of hyperbolic polynomials.

Fixed elements of pircon automorphisms
We prove that the subposet induced by the fixed elements of any automorphism of a pircon is also a pircon. By a result of Abdallah, Hansson, and Hultman, the order complex of any open interval in a pircon is a PL ball or a PL sphere. We apply our main results to symmetric groups of the form $S_{2n}$. A consequence is that the fixed point free signed involutions form a pircon under the dual of the Bruhat order on the hyperoctahedral group. Finally, we prove that this poset is, in fact, EL-shellable, which is a type $B$ analogue of a result of Can, Cherniavsky, and Twelbeck.

Möbius Homology
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper introduces and develops Möbius homology, a homology theory for representations of finite posets into abelian categories. Although the connection between poset topology and Möbius functions is classical, we go further by establishing a direct connection between poset topology and Möbius inversions. In particular, we show that Möbius homology categorifies the Möbius inversion, as its Euler characteristic coincides with the Möbius inversion applied to the dimension function of the representation. We also present a homological version of Rota's Galois Connection Theorem, relating the Möbius homologies of two posets connected by a Galois connection. Our main application concerns persistent homology over general posets. We prove that, under a suitable definition, the persistence diagram arises as an Euler characteristic over a poset of intervals, and thus Möbius homology provides a categorification of the persistence diagram. This furnishes a new invariant for persistent homology over arbitrary finite posets. Finally, leveraging our homological variant of Rota's Galois Connection Theorem, we establish several results about the persistence diagram.

On reachability categories, persistence, and commuting algebras of quivers
Published in Theory and Applications of Categories, Vol. 41, 2024, No. 12, pp 426-448 • View Publication • BIB
For a finite quiver $Q$, we study the reachability category $\mathbf{Reach}_Q$. We investigate the properties of $\mathbf{Reach}_Q$ from both a categorical and a topological viewpoint. In particular, we compare $\mathbf{Reach}_Q$ with $\mathbf{Path}_Q$, the category freely generated by $Q$. As a first application, we study the category algebra of $\mathbf{Reach}_Q$, which is isomorphic to the commuting algebra of $Q$. As a consequence, we recover, in a categorical framework, previous results obtained by Green and Schroll; we show that the commuting algebra of $Q$ is Morita equivalent to the incidence algebra of a poset, the reachability poset. We further show that commuting algebras are Morita equivalent if and only if the reachability posets are isomorphic. As a second application, we define persistent Hochschild homology of quivers via reachability categories.

Topological expansion for posets and the homological $k$-connectivity of random $q$-complexes
We study high dimensional expansion beyond simplicial complexes (posets) and focus on $q$-complexes which are complexes whose basic building blocks are linear spaces. We show that the complete $q$-complex (consists of all subspaces of a given linear space) may have non-trivial homology groups and therefore some techniques for simplicial complexes fail. We develop new techniques to work bypass this. In particular: (i) We describe a new construction of cones and use it to determine when the homology of the complete $q$-complex is trivial. We use this construction to prove the "projective support dimension conjecture" conjectured by Mnukhin and Siemons. (ii) We define topological high dimensional expansion for posets, and show that the complete $q$-complex has linear (in the number of lines) coboundary expansion. (iii) We define the $q$-Linial-Meshulam model of random $q$-complexes and prove a sharp threshold for the connectivity of random $q$-complexes.

Projective and external saturation problem for posets
We introduce two variants of the poset saturation problem. For a poset $P$ and the Boolean lattice $\mathcal{B}_n$, a family $\mathcal{F}$ of sets, not necessarily from $\mathcal{B}_n$, is \textit{projective $P$-saturated} if (i) it does not contain any strong copies of $P$, (ii) for any $G\in \mathcal{B}_n\setminus \mathcal{F}$, the family $\mathcal{F}\cup \{G\}$ contains a strong copy of $P$, and (iii) for any two different $F,F'\in\mathcal{F}$ we have $F\cap[n]\neq F'\cap [n]$. Ordinary strongly $P$-saturated families, i.e., subfamilies $\mathcal{F}$ required to be from $\mathcal{B}_n$ satisfying (i) and (ii), automatically satisfy (iii) as they lie within $\mathcal{B}_n$. We study what phenomena are valid both for the ordinary saturation number $\mathrm{sat}^*(n,P)$ and the projective saturation number, the size of the smallest projective $P$-saturated family. Note that the projective saturation number might differ for a poset and its dual. We also introduce an even more relaxed and symmetric version of poset saturation, \textit{external saturation}. We conjecture that all finite posets have bounded external saturation number, and prove this in some special cases.

On the cross-product conjecture for the number of linear extensions
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 77 (2025) 535-562 • View Publication • BIB
We prove a weak version of the cross--product conjecture: ${F}(k+1,\ell) {F}(k,\ell+1) \geq (\frac12+\varepsilon) {F}(k,\ell) {F}(k+1,\ell+1)$, where ${F}(k,\ell)$ is the number of linear extensions for which the values at fixed elements $x,y,z$ are $k$ and $\ell$ apart, respectively, and where $\varepsilon>0$ depends on the poset. We also prove the converse inequality and disprove the {generalized cross--product conjecture}. The proofs use geometric inequalities for mixed volumes and combinatorics of words.
Sparse Incidence Geometries and Pebble Game Algorithms
We generalize a sparsity condition for hypergraphs and show a result relating sparseness of hypergraphs to the decomposition of a modified incidence graph into edge-disjoint spanning forests. We also give new sparsity conditions for posets, and define an algorithm of pebble game type for recognising this sparsity.
Ladder determinantal varieties and their symbolic blowups
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we show that the symbolic Rees algebra of a mixed ladder determinantal ideal is strongly $F$-regular. Furthermore, we prove that the symbolic associated graded algebra of a mixed ladder determinantal ideal is $F$-pure. The latter implies that mixed ladder determinantal rings are $F$-pure. We also show that ideals of the poset of minors of a generic matrix give rise to $F$-pure algebras with straightening law.

Minimal Posets with Prescribed Maximal Chain Cardinalities
Given a nonempty finite multiset $S$ of positive integers, we wish to find a partially ordered set $P$ of minimal cardinality such that the multiset of cardinalities of all maximal chains in $P$ equals $S$. This paper establishes upper and lower bounds on the size of $P$: $\max(S) + \lceil \log_2 |S| \rceil <= |P| <= \max(S) + |S| - 1$, and both bounds are tight.

Note on the number of antichains in generalizations of the Boolean lattice
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a short and self-contained argument that shows that, for any positive integers $t$ and $n$ with $t =O\Bigl(\frac{n}{\log n}\Bigr)$, the number $α([t]^n)$ of antichains of the poset $[t]^n$ is at most \[\exp_2\Bigl(1+O\Bigl(\Bigl(\frac{t\log^3 n}{n}\Bigr)^{1/2}\Bigr)\Bigr)N(t,n)\,,\] where $N(t,n)$ is the size of a largest level of $[t]^n$. This, in particular, says that if $t \ll n/\log^3 n$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$, then $\logα([t]^n)=(1+o(1))N(t,n)$, giving a (partially) positive answer to a question of Moshkovitz and Shapira for $t, n$ in this range. Particularly for $t=3$, we prove a better upper bound: \[\logα([3]^n)\le(1+4\log 3/n)N(3,n),\] which is the best known upper bound on the number of antichains of $[3]^n$.
Dualizing and canonical complexes on finite posets
