We introduce coloring groups, which are permutation groups obtained from a proper edge coloring of a graph. These groups generalize the generalized toggle groups of Striker (which themselves generalize the toggle groups introduced by Cameron and Fon-der-Flaass). We present some general results connecting the structure of a coloring group to the structure of its graph coloring, providing graph-theoretic characterizations of the centralizer and primitivity of a coloring group. We apply these results particularly to generalized toggle groups arising from trees as well as coloring groups arising from the independence posets introduced by Thomas and Williams.

In \cite{striker2018rowmotion} Striker generalized Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass's notion of a toggle group. In this paper we begin the study of transitive generalized toggle groups that contain a cycle. We first show that if such a group has degree $n$ and contains a transposition or a 3-cycle then the group contains $A_n$. Using the result about transpositions, we then prove that a transitive generalized toggle group that contains a short cycle must be primitive. Employing a result of Jones \cite{jones2014primitive}, which relies on the classification of the finite simple groups, we conclude that any transitive generalized toggle group of degree $n$ that contains a cycle with at least 3 fixed points must also contain $A_n$. Finally, we look at imprimitive generalized toggle groups containing a long cycle and show that they decompose into a direct product of primitive generalized toggle groups each containing a long cycle.

Interval-closed sets of a poset are a natural superset of order ideals. We initiate the study of interval-closed sets of finite posets from enumerative and dynamical perspectives. In particular, we use the generalized toggle group to define rowmotion on interval-closed sets as a product of these toggles. Our main theorem is an intricate global characterization of rowmotion on interval-closed sets, which we show is equivalent to the toggling definition. We also study specific posets; we enumerate interval-closed sets of ordinal sums of antichains, completely describe their rowmotion orbits, and prove a homomesy result involving the signed cardinality statistic. Finally, we study interval-closed sets of product of chains posets, proving further results about enumeration and homomesy.

In this article, we consider involutions, called togglings, on the set of independent sets of the Dynkin diagram of type A, or a path graph. We are interested in the action of the subgroup of the symmetric group of the set of independent sets generated by togglings. We show that the subgroup coincides with the symmetric group.
Birational and noncommutative lifts of antichain toggling and rowmotion

The rowmotion action on order ideals or on antichains of a finite partially ordered set has been studied (under a variety of names) by many authors. Depending on the poset, one finds unexpectedly interesting orbit structures, instances of (small order) periodicity, cyclic sieving, and homomesy. Many of these nice features still hold when the action is extended to $[0,1]$-labelings of the poset or (via detropicalization) to labelings by rational functions (the birational setting).
In this work, we parallel the birational lifting already done for order-ideal rowmotion to antichain rowmotion. We give explicit equivariant bijections between the birational toggle groups and between their respective liftings. We further extend all of these notions to labellings by noncommutative rational functions, setting an unpublished periodicity conjecture of Grinberg in a broader context.

In 2012, N. Williams and the second author showed that on order ideals of ranked partially ordered sets (posets), rowmotion is conjugate to (and thus has the same orbit structure as) a different toggle group action, which in special cases is equivalent to promotion on linear extensions of posets constructed from two chains. In 2015, O. Pechenik and the first and second authors extended these results to show that increasing tableaux under K-promotion naturally corresponds to order ideals in a product of three chains under a toggle group action conjugate to rowmotion they called hyperplane promotion. In this paper, we generalize these results to the setting of arbitrary increasing labelings of any finite poset with given restrictions on the labels. We define a generalization of K-promotion in this setting and show it corresponds to a toggle group action we call toggle-promotion on order ideals of an associated poset. When the restrictions on labels are particularly nice (for example, specifying a global bound on all labels used), we show that toggle-promotion is conjugate to rowmotion. Additionally, we show that any poset that can be nicely embedded into a Cartesian product has a natural toggle-promotion action conjuate to rowmotion.

In this paper, we analyze the toggle group on the set of antichains of a poset. Toggle groups, generated by simple involutions, were first introduced by Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass for order ideals of posets. Recently Striker has motivated the study of toggle groups on general families of subsets, including antichains. This paper expands on this work by examining the relationship between the toggle groups of antichains and order ideals, constructing an explicit isomorphism between the two groups. We also focus on the rowmotion action that has been well-studied in dynamical algebraic combinatorics, describing it as the composition of antichain toggles. We also describe a piecewise-linear analogue of toggling to Stanley's chain polytope. We examine the connections with the piecewise-linear toggling Einstein and Propp introduced for order polytopes and prove that almost all of our results for antichain toggles extend to the piecewise-linear setting.

This paper explores the orbit structure and homomesy (constant averages over orbits) properties of certain actions of toggle groups on the collection of independent sets of a path graph. In particular we prove a generalization of a homomesy conjecture of Propp that for the action of a "Coxeter element" of vertex toggles, the difference of indicator functions of symmetrically-located vertices is 0-mesic. Then we use our analysis to show facts about orbit sizes that are easy to conjecture but nontrivial to prove. Besides its intrinsic interest, this particular combinatorial dynamical system is valuable in providing an interesting example of (a) homomesy in a context where large orbit sizes make a cyclic sieving phenomenon unlikely to exist, (b) the use of Coxeter theory to greatly generalize the set of actions for which results hold, and (c) the usefulness of Striker's notion of generalized toggle groups.

We generalize the notion of the toggle group, as defined in [P. Cameron-D. Fon-der-Flaass '95] and further explored in [J. Striker-N. Williams '12], from the set of order ideals of a poset to any family of subsets of a finite set. We prove structure theorems for certain finite generalized toggle groups, similar to the theorem of Cameron and Fon-der-Flaass in the case of order ideals. We apply these theorems and find other results on generalized toggle groups in the following settings: chains, antichains, and interval-closed sets of a poset; independent sets, vertex covers, acyclic subgraphs, and spanning subgraphs of a graph; matroids and convex geometries. We generalize rowmotion, an action studied on order ideals in [P. Cameron-D. Fon-der-Flaass '95] and [J. Striker-N. Williams '12], to a map we call cover-closure on closed sets of a closure operator. We show that cover-closure is bijective if and only if the set of closed sets is isomorphic to the set of order ideals of a poset, which implies rowmotion is the only bijective cover-closure map.
Flexible Toggles and Symmetric Invertible Asynchronous Elementary Cellular Automata

A sequential dynamical system (SDS) consists of a graph $G$ with vertices $v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_n$, a state set $A$, a collection of "vertex functions" $\{f_{v_i}\}_{i=1}^n$, and a permutation $π\in S_n$ that specifies how to compose these functions to yield the SDS map $[G,\{f_{v_i}\}_{i=1}^n,π]\colon A^n\to A^n$. In this paper, we study symmetric invertible SDS defined over the cycle graph $C_n$ using the set of states $\mathbb F_2$. These are, in other words, asynchronous elementary cellular automata (ECA) defined using ECA rules 150 and 105. Each of these SDS defines a group action on the set $\mathbb F_2^n$ of $n$-bit binary vectors. Because the SDS maps are products of involutions, this relates to \emph{generalized toggle groups}, which Striker recently defined. In this paper, we further generalize the notion of a generalized toggle group to that of a \emph{flexible toggle group}; the SDS maps we consider are examples of Coxeter elements of flexible toggle groups.
Our main result is the complete classification of the dynamics of symmetric invertible SDS defined over cycle graphs using the set of states $\mathbb F_2$ and the identity update order $π=123\cdots n$. More precisely, if $T$ denotes the SDS map of such an SDS, then we obtain an explicit formula for $|\text{Per}_r(T)|$, the number of periodic points of $T$ of period $r$, for every positive integer $r$. It turns out that if we fix $r$ and vary $n$ and $T$, then $|\text{Per}_r(T)|$ only takes at most three nonzero values.
The toggle group, homomesy, and the Razumov-Stroganov correspondence

The Razumov-Stroganov correspondence, an important link between statistical physics and combinatorics proved in 2011 by L. Cantini and A. Sportiello, relates the ground state eigenvector of the O(1) dense loop model on a semi-infinite cylinder to a refined enumeration of fully-packed loops, which are in bijection with alternating sign matrices. This paper reformulates a key component of this proof in terms of posets, the toggle group, and homomesy, and proves two new homomesy results on general posets which we hope will have broader implications.
