Pattern-avoiding alternating words
Published • View Publication • BIB
A word $w=w_1w_2\cdots w_n$ is alternating if either $w_1<w_2>w_3<w_4>\cdots$ (when the word is up-down) or $w_1>w_2<w_3>w_4<\cdots$ (when the word is down-up). In this paper, we initiate the study of (pattern-avoiding) alternating words. We enumerate up-down (equivalently, down-up) words via finding a bijection with order ideals of a certain poset. Further, we show that the number of 123-avoiding up-down words of even length is given by the Narayana numbers, which is also the case, shown by us bijectively, with 132-avoiding up-down words of even length. We also give formulas for enumerating all other cases of avoidance of a permutation pattern of length 3 on alternating words.

p-Ascent Sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
A sequence $(a_1, \ldots, a_n)$ of nonnegative integers is an {\em ascent sequence} if $a_0 =0$ and for all $i \geq 2$, $a_i$ is at most 1 plus the number of ascents in $(a_1, \ldots, a_{i-1})$. Ascent sequences were introduced by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes, and Kitaev, who showed that these sequences of length $n$ are in 1-to-1 correspondence with \tpt-free posets of size $n$, which, in turn, are in 1-to-1 correspondence with interval orders of size $n$. Ascent sequences are also in bijection with several other classes of combinatorial objects including the set of upper triangular matrices with nonnegative integer entries such that no row or column contains all zeros, permutations that avoid a certain mesh pattern, and the set of Stoimenow matchings. In this paper, we introduce a generalization of ascent sequences, which we call {\em $p$-ascent sequences}, where $p \geq 1$. A sequence $(a_1, \ldots, a_n)$ of nonnegative integers is a $p$-ascent sequence if $a_0 =0$ and for all $i \geq 2$, $a_i$ is at most $p$ plus the number of ascents in $(a_1, \ldots, a_{i-1})$. Thus, in our terminology, ascent sequences are 1-ascent sequences. We generalize a result of the authors by enumerating $p$-ascent sequences with respect to the number of $0$s. We also generalize a result of Dukes, Kitaev, Remmel, and Steingrímsson by finding the generating function for the number of $p$-ascent sequences which have no consecutive repeated elements. Finally, we initiate the study of pattern-avoiding $p$-ascent sequences.

Ascent sequences and the binomial convolution of Catalan numbers
In this paper, we consider two sets of pattern-avoiding ascent sequences: those avoiding both 201 and 210 and those avoiding 0021. In each case we show that the number of such ascent sequences is given by the binomial convolution of the Catalan numbers. The result for $\{201, 210\}$-avoiders completes a family of results given by Baxter and the current author in a previous paper. The result for 0021-avoiders, together with previous work of Duncan, Steingrímsson, Mansour, and Shattuck, completes the Wilf classification of single patterns of length 4 for ascent sequences.

Pattern-avoiding permutations and Brownian excursion Part I: Shapes and fluctuations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Permutations that avoid given patterns are among the most classical objects in combinatorics and have strong connections to many fields of mathematics, computer science and biology. In this paper we study the scaling limits of a random permutation avoiding a pattern of length 3 and their relations to Brownian excursion. Exploring this connection to Brownian excursion allows us to strengthen the recent results of Madras and Pehlivan, and Miner and Pak as well as to understand many of the interesting phenomena that had previously gone unexplained.

Ascent sequences avoiding pairs of patterns
Published • View Publication • BIB
Ascent sequences were introduced by Bousquet-Melou et al. in connection with (2+2)-avoiding posets and their pattern avoidance properties were first considered by Duncan and Steingrimsson. In this paper, we consider ascent sequences of length $n$ avoiding two patterns of length 3, and we determine an exact enumeration for 16 different pairs of patterns. Methods include simple recurrences, bijections to other combinatorial objects (including Dyck paths and pattern-avoiding permutations), and generating trees. We also provide an analogue of the Erdos-Szekeres Theorem to prove that any sufficiently long ascent sequence contains either many copies of the same number or a long increasing subsequence, with a precise bound.

On the growth rate of 1324-avoiding permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an improved algorithm for counting the number of $1324$-avoiding permutations, resulting in 5 further terms of the generating function. We analyse the known coefficients and find compelling evidence that unlike other classical length-4 pattern-avoiding permutations, the generating function in this case does not have an algebraic singularity. Rather, the number of 1324-avoiding permutations of length $n$ behaves as $$B\cdot μ^n \cdot μ_1^{n^σ} \cdot n^g.$$ We estimate $μ=11.60 \pm 0.01,$ $σ=1/2,$ $μ_1 = 0.0398 \pm 0.0010,$ $g = -1.1 \pm 0.2$ and $B =9.5 \pm 1.0.$
Pattern-Avoiding Involutions: Exact and Asymptotic Enumeration
We consider the enumeration of pattern-avoiding involutions, focusing in particular on sets defined by avoiding a single pattern of length 4. As we demonstrate, the numerical data for these problems demonstrates some surprising behavior. This strange behavior even provides some very unexpected data related to the number of 1324-avoiding permutations.

Two Vignettes On Full Rook Placements
Using bijections between pattern-avoiding permutations and certain full rook placements on Ferrers boards, we give short proofs of two enumerative results. The first is a simplified enumeration of the 3124, 1234-avoiding permutations, obtained recently by Callan via a complicated decomposition. The second is a streamlined bijection between 1342-avoiding permutations and permutations which can be sorted by two increasing stacks in series, originally due to Atkinson, Murphy, and Ruškuc.

Pattern avoidance in ordered set partitions and words
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the enumeration of ordered set partitions avoiding a permutation pattern, as introduced by Godbole, Goyt, Herdan and Pudwell. Let $\op_{n,k}(p)$ be the number of ordered set partitions of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ into $k$ blocks that avoid a permutation pattern $p$. We establish an explicit identity between the number $\op_{n,k}(p)$ and the numbers of words avoiding the inverse of $p$. This identity allows us to easily translate results on pattern-avoiding words obtained in earlier works into equivalent results on pattern-avoiding ordered set partitions. In particular, \emph{(a)} we determine the asymptotic growth rate of the sequence $(\op_{n,k}(p))_{n\geq 1}$ for every positive $k$ and every permutation pattern $p$, \emph{(b)} we partially confirm a conjecture of Godbole et al. concerning the variation of the sequences $(\op_{n,k}p))_{1\leq k\leq n}$, \emph{(c)} we undertake a detailed study of the number of ordered set partitions avoiding a pattern of length 3.

Symmetries of statistics on lattice paths between two boundaries
Published in Adv. Math. 287 (2016), 347-388 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that on the set of lattice paths with steps N=(0,1) and E=(1,0) that lie between two fixed boundaries T and B (which are themselves lattice paths), the statistics `number of E steps shared with B' and `number of E steps shared with T' have a symmetric joint distribution. To do so, we give an involution that switches these statistics, preserves additional parameters, and generalizes to paths that contain steps S=(0,-1) at prescribed x-coordinates. We also show that a similar equidistribution result for path statistics follows from the fact that the Tutte polynomial of a matroid is independent of the order of its ground set. We extend the two theorems to k-tuples of paths between two boundaries, and we give some applications to Dyck paths, generalizing a result of Deutsch, to watermelon configurations, to pattern-avoiding permutations, and to the generalized Tamari lattice. Finally, we prove a conjecture of Nicolás about the distribution of degrees of k consecutive vertices in k-triangulations of a convex n-gon. To achieve this goal, we provide a new statistic-preserving bijection between certain k-tuples of non-crossing paths and k-flagged semistandard Young tableaux, which is based on local moves reminiscent of jeu de taquin.

Cyclic permutations realized by signed shifts
Published • View Publication • BIB
The periodic (ordinal) patterns of a map are the permutations realized by the relative order of the points in its periodic orbits. We give a combinatorial characterization of the periodic patterns of an arbitrary signed shift, in terms of the structure of the descent set of a certain cyclic permutation associated to the pattern. Signed shifts are an important family of one-dimensional dynamical systems that includes shift maps and the tent map as particular cases. Defined as a function on the set of infinite words on a finite alphabet, a signed shift deletes the first letter and, depending on its value, possibly applies the complementation operation on the remaining word. For shift maps, reverse shift maps, and the tent map, we give exact formulas for their number of periodic patterns. As a byproduct of our work, we recover results of Gessel--Reutenauer and Weiss--Rogers and obtain new enumeration formulas for pattern-avoiding cycles.

(a,b)-rectangle patterns in permutations and words
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a $(a,b)$-rectangle pattern on permutations that not only generalizes the notion of successive elements (bonds) in permutations, but is also related to mesh patterns introduced recently by Brändén and Claesson. We call the $(k,k)$-rectangle pattern the $k$-box pattern. To provide an enumeration result on the maximum number of occurrences of the 1-box pattern, we establish an enumerative result on pattern-avoiding signed permutations. Further, we extend the notion of $(k,\ell)$-rectangle patterns to words and binary matrices, and provide distribution of $(1,\ell)$-rectangle patterns on words; explicit formulas are given for up to 7 letter alphabets where $\ell \in \{1,2\}$, while obtaining distributions for larger alphabets depends on inverting a matrix we provide. We also provide similar results for the distribution of bonds over words. As a corollary to our studies we confirm a conjecture of Mathar on the number of "stable LEGO walls" of width 7 as well as prove three conjectures due to Hardin and a conjecture due to Barker. We also enumerate two sequences published by Hardin in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

The Shape of Random Pattern-Avoiding Permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We initiate the study of limit shapes for random permutations avoiding a given pattern. Specifically, for patterns of length 3, we obtain delicate results on the asymptotics of distributions of positions of numbers in the permutations. We view the permutations as 0-1 matrices to describe the resulting asymptotics geometrically. We then apply our results to obtain a number of results on distributions of permutation statistics.
The Dyck pattern poset
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of pattern in the context of lattice paths, and investigate it in the specific case of Dyck paths. Similarly to the case of permutations, the pattern-containment relation defines a poset structure on the set of all Dyck paths, which we call the Dyck pattern poset. Given a Dyck path P, we determine a formula for the number of Dyck paths covered by P, as well as for the number of Dyck paths covering P. We then address some typical pattern-avoidance issues, enumerating some classes of pattern-avoiding Dyck paths. Finally, we offer a conjecture concerning the asymptotic behavior of the sequence counting Dyck paths avoiding a generic pattern and we pose a series of open problems regarding the structure of the Dyck pattern poset.

Pattern Count on Multiply Restricted Permutations
Previous work has studied the pattern count on singly restricted permutations. In this work, we focus on patterns of length 3 in multiply restricted permutations, especially for double and triple pattern-avoiding permutations. We derive explicit formulae or generating functions for various occurrences of length 3 patterns on multiply restricted permutations, as well as some combinatorial interpretations for non-trivial pattern relationships.

Beyond alternating permutations: Pattern avoidance in Young diagrams and tableaux
Published in Published in two parts: Electr. J. Comb. 20(4): #P17 (2013) and Electr. J. Comb. 21(3): #P3.9 (2014) • View Publication • BIB
We investigate pattern avoidance in alternating permutations and generalizations thereof. First, we study pattern avoidance in an alternating analogue of Young diagrams. In particular, we extend Babson-West's notion of shape-Wilf equivalence to apply to alternating permutations and so generalize results of Backelin-West-Xin and Ouchterlony to alternating permutations. Second, we study pattern avoidance in the more general context of permutations with restricted ascents and descents. We consider a question of Lewis regarding permutations that are the reading words of thickened staircase Young tableaux, that is, permutations that have (k - 1) ascents followed by a descent, followed by (k - 1) ascents, et cetera. We determine the relative sizes of the sets of pattern-avoiding (k - 1)-ascent permutations in terms of the forbidden pattern. Furthermore, we give inequalities in the sizes of sets of pattern-avoiding permutations in this context that arise from further extensions of shape-equivalence type enumerations.
Binary Patterns in Binary Cube-Free Words: Avoidability and Growth
Published in RAIRO-Theor. Inf. Appl. 48 (2014) 369-389 • View Publication • BIB
The avoidability of binary patterns by binary cube-free words is investigated and the exact bound between unavoidable and avoidable patterns is found. All avoidable patterns are shown to be D0L-avoidable. For avoidable patterns, the growth rates of the avoiding languages are studied. All such languages, except for the overlap-free language, are proved to have exponential growth. The exact growth rates of languages avoiding minimal avoidable patterns are approximated through computer-assisted upper bounds. Finally, a new example of a pattern-avoiding language of polynomial growth is given.

Enumeration of fixed points of an involution on $β(1,0)$-trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
$β(1,0)$-trees provide a convenient description of rooted non-separable planar maps. The involution $h$ on $β(1,0)$-trees was introduced to prove a complicated equidistribution result on a class of pattern-avoiding permutations. In this paper, we describe and enumerate fixed points of the involution $h$. Intriguingly, the fixed points are equinumerous with the fixed points under taking the dual map on rooted non-separable planar maps, even though the fixed points do not go to each other under the know (natural) bijection between the trees and the maps.

Avoiding colored partitions of two elements in the pattern sense
Enumeration of pattern-avoiding objects is an active area of study with connections to such disparate regions of mathematics as Schubert varieties and stack-sortable sequences. Recent research in this area has brought attention to colored permutations and colored set partitions. A colored partition of a set $S$ is a partition of $S$ with each element receiving a color from the set $[k]=\{1,2,...,k\}$. Let $Π_n\wr C_k$ be the set of partitions of $[n]$ with colors from $[k]$. In an earlier work, the authors study pattern avoidance in colored set partitions in the equality sense. Here we study pattern avoidance in colored partitions in the pattern sense. We say that $σ\inΠ_n\wr C_k$ contains $π\in Π_m\wr C_\ell$ in the pattern sense if $σ$ contains a copy $π$ when the colors are ignored and the colors on this copy of $π$ are order isomorphic to the colors on $π$. Otherwise we say that $σ$ avoids $π$. We focus on patterns from $Π_2\wr C_2$ and find that many familiar and some new integer sequences appear. We provide bijective proofs wherever possible, and we provide formulas for computing those sequences that are new.
Non-Contiguous Pattern Avoidance in Binary Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we consider the enumeration of binary trees avoiding non-contiguous binary tree patterns. We begin by computing closed formulas for the number of trees avoiding a single binary tree pattern with 4 or fewer leaves and compare these results to analogous work for contiguous tree patterns. Next, we give an explicit generating function that counts binary trees avoiding a single non-contiguous tree pattern according to number of leaves. In addition, we enumerate binary trees that simultaneously avoid more than one tree pattern. Finally, we explore connections between pattern-avoiding trees and pattern-avoiding permutations.
