Spectral Gap of Down-Up Walks via Trickle-Down: A Simplified and Sharpened Analysis
Local-to-global techniques for establishing spectral gaps have played a central role in the modern theory of Markov chain mixing times and the theory of high-dimensional expanders. One of the most striking results in this burgeoning literature is that a spectral gap for the global down-up walk on the facets of a pure simplicial complex can be reduced to sufficiently strong spectral expansion of just the codimension-2 links of the complex, a phenomenon colloquially referred to as "trickle-down". These types of theorems have had many important applications, including rapid mixing of the exchange walk on the bases of any matroid. In this primarily expository article, we give streamlined proofs of two such theorems in the literature, one by Oppenheim (2018) and one by Leake and Oveis Gharan (2025), via an integrated Bochner method. Moreover, in the latter setting, we quantitatively strengthen the dependence of the global spectral gap on the dimension of the complex and the spectral influence, resolving an open question of Leake and Oveis Gharan.
Disclaimer: The proofs were developed through a couple of rounds of interaction with GPT-5.6 Sol Ultra. We later discovered that Guo and Zhang (2026) had independently proven the same strengthening of the trickle-down theorem of Leake and Oveis Gharan using an extremely similar argument, also found by GPT-5.6 Sol Ultra. The focus of their paper is the complexity of approximating the partition function of spin systems on planar graphs, not on the trickle-down phenomenon itself. In contrast, our motivation is primarily expository, and we hope to bring Bochner-type methods and their connections with the trickle-down phenomenon to the attention of a wider community of researchers.

In this paper, we find distributions of the left-to-right maxima, right-to-left maxima, left-to-right minima and right-to-left-minima statistics on up-down and down-up permutations of even and odd lengths. For instance, we show that the distribution of right-to-left maxima on up-down permutations of even length is given by $(\sec (t))^{q}$. We also derive the joint distribution of the maxima (resp., minima) statistics. To accomplish this, we generalize a result of Kitaev and Remmel by deriving joint distributions involving non-maxima (resp., non-minima) statistics. Consequently, we refine classic enumeration results of André by introducing new $q$-analogues and $(p,q)$-analogues for the number of alternating permutations.
Additionally, we verify Callan's conjecture (2012) that the number of up-down permutations of even length fixed by reverse and complement equals the Springer numbers, thereby offering another combinatorial interpretation of these numbers. Furthermore, we propose two $q$-analogues and a $(p,q)$-analogue of the Springer numbers. Lastly, we enumerate alternating permutations that avoid certain flat partially ordered patterns (POPs), where the only minimum or maximum elements are labeled by the largest or smallest numbers.
Rapid mixing of the down-up walk on matchings of a fixed size
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and let $m^*(G)$ denote the size of a maximum matching in $G$. We show that for any $δ> 0$ and for any $1 \leq k \leq (1-δ)m^*(G)$, the down-up walk on matchings of size $k$ in $G$ mixes in time polynomial in $n$. Previously, polynomial mixing was not known even for graphs with maximum degree $Δ$, and our result makes progress on a conjecture of Jain, Perkins, Sah, and Sawhney [STOC, 2022] that the down-up walk mixes in optimal time $O_{Δ,δ}(n\log{n})$.
In contrast with recent works analyzing mixing of down-up walks in various settings using the spectral independence framework, we bound the spectral gap by constructing and analyzing a suitable multi-commodity flow. In fact, we present constructions demonstrating the limitations of the spectral independence approach in our setting.
Entropy factorization via curvature

We develop a new framework for establishing approximate factorization of entropy on arbitrary probability spaces, using a geometric notion known as non-negative sectional curvature. The resulting estimates are equivalent to entropy subadditivity and generalized Brascamp-Lieb inequalities, and provide a sharp modified log-Sobolev inequality for the Gibbs sampler of several particle systems in both continuous and discrete settings. The method allows us to obtain simple proofs of known results, as well as some new inequalities. We illustrate this through various applications, including discrete Gaussian free fields on arbitrary networks, the down-up walk on uniform $n$-sets, the uniform measure over permutations, and the uniform measure on the unit sphere in $\R^n$. Our method also yields a simple, coupling-based proof of the celebrated logarithmic Sobolev inequality for Langevin diffusions in a convex potential, which is one of the most emblematic applications of the Bakry-Émery criterion.
The Symplectic Schur Process

We define a measure on tuples of partitions, called the symplectic Schur process, that should be regarded as the right analogue of the Schur process of Okounkov-Reshetikhin for the Cartan type C. The weights of our measure include factors that are universal symplectic characters, as well as a novel family of "Down-Up Schur functions" that we define and for which we prove new identities of Cauchy-Littlewood-type. Our main structural result is that the point process corresponding to the symplectic Schur process is determinantal and we find an explicit correlation kernel. We also present dynamics that preserve the family of symplectic Schur processes and explore an alternative sampling scheme, based on the Berele insertion algorithm, in a special case. Finally, we study the asymptotics of the Berele insertion process and find explicit formulas for the limit shape and fluctuations near the bulk and the edge. One of the limit regimes leads to a new kernel that resembles the symmetric Pearcey kernel.
Relations of multiple $\tilde{T}$-values involving the total numbers of certain permutations
Kaneko and Tsumura proved a relation of multiple $\tilde{T}$-values involving Entringer numbers counting the total number of down-up permutations starting with a fixed value. In the present paper, we generalize this relation and provide some relations involving Entringer numbers and the total number of Dumont permutations of the first kind starting with a fixed value. For this purpose, we also provide explicit formulas for the total numbers of those permutations.
Optimal mixing of the down-up walk on independent sets of a given size

Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices of maximum degree $Δ$. We show that, for any $δ> 0$, the down-up walk on independent sets of size $k \leq (1-δ)α_c(Δ)n$ mixes in time $O_{Δ,δ}(k\log{n})$, thereby resolving a conjecture of Davies and Perkins in an optimal form. Here, $α_{c}(Δ)n$ is the NP-hardness threshold for the problem of counting independent sets of a given size in a graph on $n$ vertices of maximum degree $Δ$. Our mixing time has optimal dependence on $k,n$ for the entire range of $k$; previously, even polynomial mixing was not known. In fact, for $k = Ω_Δ(n)$ in this range, we establish a log-Sobolev inequality with optimal constant $Ω_{Δ,δ}(1/n)$.
At the heart of our proof are three new ingredients, which may be of independent interest. The first is a method for lifting $\ell_\infty$-independence from a suitable distribution on the discrete cube -- in this case, the hard-core model -- to the slice by proving stability of an Edgeworth expansion using a multivariate zero-free region for the base distribution. The second is a generalization of the Lee-Yau induction to prove log-Sobolev inequalities for distributions on the slice with considerably less symmetry than the uniform distribution. The third is a sharp decomposition-type result which provides a lossless comparison between the Dirichlet form of the original Markov chain and that of the so-called projected chain in the presence of a contractive coupling.
On Optimization and Counting of Non-Broken Bases of Matroids
Given a matroid $M=(E,{\cal I})$, and a total ordering over the elements $E$, a broken circuit is a circuit where the smallest element is removed and an NBC independent set is an independent set in ${\cal I}$ with no broken circuit. The set of NBC independent sets of any matroid $M$ define a simplicial complex called the broken circuit complex which has been the subject of intense study in combinatorics. Recently, Adiprasito, Huh and Katz showed that the face of numbers of any broken circuit complex form a log-concave sequence, proving a long-standing conjecture of Rota.
We study counting and optimization problems on NBC bases of a generic matroid. We find several fundamental differences with the independent set complex: for example, we show that it is NP-hard to find the max-weight NBC base of a matroid or that the convex hull of NBC bases of a matroid has edges of arbitrary large length. We also give evidence that the natural down-up walk on the space of NBC bases of a matroid may not mix rapidly by showing that for some family of matroids it is NP-hard to count the number of NBC bases after certain conditionings.
Down-up algebras and chromatic symmetric functions
We establish Guay-Paquet's unpublished linear relation between certain chromatic symmetric functions by relating his algebra on paths to the $q$-Klyachko algebra. The coefficients in this relations are $q$-hit polynomials, and they come up naturally in our setup as connected remixed Eulerian numbers, in contrast to the computational approach of Colmenarejo-Morales-Panova. As Guay-Paquet's algebra is a down-up algebra, we are able to harness algebraic results in the context of the latter and establish results of a combinatorial flavour. In particular we resolve a conjecture of Colmenarejo-Morales-Panova on chromatic symmetric functions. This concerns the abelian case of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture, which we briefly survey.

The Euler number $E_n$ (resp. Entringer number $E_{n,k}$) enumerates the alternating (down-up) permutations of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ (resp. starting with $k$). The Springer number $S_n$ (resp. Arnold number $S_{n,k}$) enumerates the type $B$ alternating permutations (resp. starting with $k$). In this paper, using bijections we first derive the counterparts in {\em André permutations} and {\em Simsun permutations} for the Entringer numbers $(E_{n,k})$, and then the counterparts in {\em signed André permutations} and {\em type $B$ increasing 1-2 trees} for the Arnold numbers $(S_{n,k})$.

The motivation of this work is to extend the techniques of higher order random walks on simplicial complexes to analyze mixing times of Markov chains for combinatorial problems. Our main result is a sharp upper bound on the second eigenvalue of the down-up walk on a pure simplicial complex, in terms of the second eigenvalues of its links. We show some applications of this result in analyzing mixing times of Markov chains, including sampling independent sets of a graph and sampling common independent sets of two partition matroids.
Avoiding vincular patterns on alternating words

A word $w=w_1w_2\cdots w_n$ is alternating if either $w_1<w_2>w_3<w_4>\cdots$ (when the word is up-down) or $w_1>w_2<w_3>w_4<\cdots$ (when the word is down-up). The study of alternating words avoiding classical permutation patterns was initiated by the authors in~\cite{GKZ}, where, in particular, it was shown that 123-avoiding up-down words of even length are counted by the Narayana numbers.
However, not much was understood on the structure of 123-avoiding up-down words. In this paper, we fill in this gap by introducing the notion of a cut-pair that allows us to subdivide the set of words in question into equivalence classes. We provide a combinatorial argument to show that the number of equivalence classes is given by the Catalan numbers, which induces an alternative (combinatorial) proof of the corresponding result in~\cite{GKZ}.
Further, we extend the enumerative results in~\cite{GKZ} to the case of alternating words avoiding a vincular pattern of length 3. We show that it is sufficient to enumerate up-down words of even length avoiding the consecutive pattern $\underline{132}$ and up-down words of odd length avoiding the consecutive pattern $\underline{312}$ to answer all of our enumerative questions. The former of the two key cases is enumerated by the Stirling numbers of the second kind.

A word $w=w_1w_2\cdots w_n$ is alternating if either $w_1<w_2>w_3<w_4>\cdots$ (when the word is up-down) or $w_1>w_2<w_3>w_4<\cdots$ (when the word is down-up). In this paper, we initiate the study of (pattern-avoiding) alternating words. We enumerate up-down (equivalently, down-up) words via finding a bijection with order ideals of a certain poset. Further, we show that the number of 123-avoiding up-down words of even length is given by the Narayana numbers, which is also the case, shown by us bijectively, with 132-avoiding up-down words of even length. We also give formulas for enumerating all other cases of avoidance of a permutation pattern of length 3 on alternating words.
A bijective enumeration of $3$-strip tableaux
Baryshnikov and Romik derived the combinatorial identities for the numbers of the $m$-strip tableaux. This generalized the classical André's theorem for the number of up-down permutations. They asked for a bijective proof for the enumeration of $3$-strip tableaux. In this paper we will provide such a bijective proof. First we count the $3$-strip tableaux by decomposition. Secondly we will apply this "decomposition" idea on the up-down permutations and down-up permutations to enumerate the $3$-strip tableaux bijectively.

Quadrant marked mesh patterns in alternating permutations
This paper is continuation of the systematic study of distribution of quadrant marked mesh patterns. We study quadrant marked mesh patterns on up-down and down-up permutations, also known as alternating and reverse alternating permutations, respectively. In particular, we refine classic enumeration results of André on alternating permutations by showing that the distribution of the quadrant marked mesh pattern of interest is given by $(\sec(xt))^{1/x}$ on up-down permutations of even length and by $\int_0^t (\sec(xz))^{1+\frac{1}{x}}dz$ on down-up permutations of odd length.

In this paper, we give bijections between the set of 4123-avoiding down-up alternating permutations of length $2n$ and the set of standard Young tableaux of shape $(n,n,n)$, and between the set of 4123-avoiding down-up alternating permutations of length $2n-1$ and the set of shifted standard Young tableaux of shape $(n+1, n, n-1)$ via an intermediate structure of Yamanouchi words. Moreover, we get the enumeration of 4123-avoiding up-down alternating permutations of even and odd length by presenting bijections between 4123-avoiding up-down alternating permutations and standard Young tableaux.
Variations on Descents and Inversions in Permutations

We study new statistics on permutations that are variations on the descent and the inversion statistics. In particular, we consider the alternating descent set of a permutation sigma = sigma_1sigma_2...sigma_n defined as the set of indices i such that either i is odd and sigma_i > sigma_{i+1}, or i is even and sigma_i < sigma_{i+1}. We show that this statistic is equidistributed with the 3-descent set statistic on permutations sigma = sigma_1sigma_2...sigma_{n+1} with sigma_1 = 1, defined to be the set of indices i such that the triple sigma_i sigma_{i+1} sigma_{i+2} forms an odd permutation of size 3. We then introduce Mahonian inversion statistics corresponding to the two new variations of descents and show that the joint distributions of the resulting descent-inversion pairs are the same. We examine the generating functions involving alternating Eulerian polynomials, defined by analogy with the classical Eulerian polynomials sum_{sigma in S_n} t^{des(sigma)+1} using alternating descents. For the alternating descent set statistic, we define the generating polynomial in two non-commutative variables by analogy with the ab-index of the Boolean algebra B_n, and make observations about it. By looking at the number of alternating inversions in alternating (down-up) permutations, we obtain a new q-analog of the Euler number E_n and show how it emerges in a q-analog of an identity expressing E_n as a weighted sum of Dyck paths.
