Bounding the partition function of spin-systems
With a graph $G=(V,E)$ we associate a collection of non-negative real weights $\cup_{v\in V}{λ_{i,v}:1\leq i \leq m} \cup \cup_{uv \in E} {λ_{ij,uv}:1\leq i \leq j \leq m}$. We consider the probability distribution on ${f:V\rightarrow{1,...,m}}$ in which each $f$ occurs with probability proportional to $\prod_{v \in V}λ_{f(v),v}\prod_{uv \in E}λ_{f(u)f(v),uv}$. Many well-known statistical physics models, including the Ising model with an external field and the hard-core model with non-uniform activities, can be framed as such a distribution. We obtain an upper bound, independent of $G$, for the partition function (the normalizing constant which turns the assignment of weights on $\{f:V\rightarrow{1,...,m\}}$ into a probability distribution) in the case when $G$ is a regular bipartite graph. This generalizes a bound obtained by Galvin and Tetali who considered the simpler weight collection $\{λ_i:1 \leq i \leq m\} \cup \{λ_{ij}:1 \leq i \leq j \leq m\}$ with each $λ_{ij}$ either 0 or 1 and with each $f$ chosen with probability proportional to $\prod_{v \in V}λ_{f(v)}\prod_{uv \in E}λ_{f(u)f(v)}$. Our main tools are a generalization to list homomorphisms of a result of Galvin and Tetali on graph homomorphisms and a straightforward second-moment computation.
Matchings and Independent Sets of a Fixed Size in Regular Graphs
We use an entropy based method to study two graph maximization problems. We upper bound the number of matchings of fixed size $\ell$ in a $d$-regular graph on $N$ vertices. For $\frac{2\ell}{N}$ bounded away from 0 and 1, the logarithm of the bound we obtain agrees in its leading term with the logarithm of the number of matchings of size $\ell$ in the graph consisting of $\frac{N}{2d}$ disjoint copies of the complete bipartite graph $K_{d,d}$. This provides asymptotic evidence for a conjecture of S. Friedland {\it et al.}.
We also obtain an analogous result for independent sets of a fixed size in regular graphs, giving asymptotic evidence for a conjecture of J. Kahn. Our bounds on the number of matchings and independent sets of a fixed size are derived from bounds on the partition function (or generating polynomial) for matchings and independent sets.
The probability of generating the symmetric group with a commutator condition
Let B(n) be the set of pairs of permutations from the symmetric group of degree n with a 3-cycle commutator, and let A(n) be the set of those pairs which generate the symmetric or the alternating group of degree n. We find effective formulas for calculating the cardinalities of both sets. More precisely, we show that #B(n)/n! is a discrete convolution of the partition function and a linear combination of divisor functions, while #A(n)/n! is the product of a polynomial and Jordan's totient function. In particular, it follows that the probability that a pair of random permutations with a 3-cycle commutator generates the symmetric or the alternating group of degree n tends to zero as n tends to infinity, which makes a contrast with Dixon's classical result.
Key elements of our proofs are Jordan's theorem from the 19th century, a formula by Ramanujan from the 20th century and a technique of square-tiled surfaces developed by French mathematicians Lelievre and Royer in the beginning of the 21st century. This paper uses and highlights elegant connections between algebra, geometry, and number theory.

Two new expansions for partial sums of Gauss' triangular and square numbers series are given. As a consequence, we derive a family of inequalities for the overpartition function $\bar{p}(n)$ and for the partition function $p_1(n)$ counting the partitions of $n$ with distinct odd parts. Some further inequalities for variations of partition function are proposed as conjectures.
Quantum cohomology via vicious and osculating walkers

We relate the counting of rational curves intersecting Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian to the counting of certain non-intersecting lattice paths on the cylinder, so-called vicious and osculating walkers. These lattice paths form exactly solvable statistical mechanics models and are obtained from solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. The eigenvectors of the transfer matrices of these models yield the idempotents of the Verlinde algebra of the gauged u(n)-WZNW model. The latter is known to be closely related to the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian. We establish further that the partition functions of the vicious and osculating walker model are given in terms of Postnikov's toric Schur functions and can be interpreted as generating functions for Gromov-Witten invariants.
Counting Group Valued Graph Colorings
There are many variations on partition functions for graph homomorphisms or colorings. The case considered here is a counting or hard constraint problem in which the range or color graph carries a free and vertex transitive Abelian group action so that the colors are identified with the elements of this group. A Fourier transform is used to obtain an expansion for the numbers of colorings with terms indexed by isthmus free subgraphs of the domain. The terms are products of a polynomial in the edge density a of the color graph and the number of colorings of the indexing subgraph of the domain into the complementary color graph. The polynomial in a is independent of the color group and the term has order (1-a) to the r where r is the number of vertices minus the number of components in the indexing subgraph. Thus if (1-a) is small there is a main term indexed by the empty subgraph which is a polynomial in a and the first dependence on the coloring group occurs in the lowest order corrections which are indexed by the shortest cycles in the graph and are of order (1-a) to the g-1 where g is the length of these shortest cycles. The main theorem is stated as a reciprocity law. Examples are given in which the coloring groups are long cycles and products of short cycles and adjacent vertices are required to have distant rather than distinct colors. The chromatic polynomial of a graph corresponds to using any group and taking the allowed set to be the complement of the identity.
Conservation Laws of Random Matrix Theory

This paper presents an overview of the derivation and significance of recently derived conservation laws for the matrix moments of Hermitean random matrices with dominant exponential weights that may be either even or odd. This is based on a detailed asymptotic analysis of the partition function for these unitary ensembles and their scaling limits. As a particular application we derive closed form expressions for the coefficients of the genus expansion for the associated free energy in a particular class of dominant even weights. These coefficients are generating functions for enumerating g-maps, related to graphical combinatorics on Riemann surfaces. This generalizes and resolves a 30+ year old conjecture in the physics literature related to quantum gravity.
Multiply-refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices

Four natural boundary statistics and two natural bulk statistics are considered for alternating sign matrices (ASMs). Specifically, these statistics are the positions of the 1's in the first and last rows and columns of an ASM, and the numbers of generalized inversions and -1's in an ASM. Previously-known and related results for the exact enumeration of ASMs with prescribed values of some of these statistics are discussed in detail. A quadratic relation which recursively determines the generating function associated with all six statistics is then obtained. This relation also leads to various new identities satisfied by generating functions associated with fewer than six of the statistics. The derivation of the relation involves combining the Desnanot-Jacobi determinant identity with the Izergin-Korepin formula for the partition function of the six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions.
The Bethe Partition Function of Log-supermodular Graphical Models
Sudderth, Wainwright, and Willsky have conjectured that the Bethe approximation corresponding to any fixed point of the belief propagation algorithm over an attractive, pairwise binary graphical model provides a lower bound on the true partition function. In this work, we resolve this conjecture in the affirmative by demonstrating that, for any graphical model with binary variables whose potential functions (not necessarily pairwise) are all log-supermodular, the Bethe partition function always lower bounds the true partition function. The proof of this result follows from a new variant of the "four functions" theorem that may be of independent interest.
More on the O(n) model on random maps via nested loops: loops with bending energy

We continue our investigation of the nested loop approach to the O(n) model on random maps, by extending it to the case where loops may visit faces of arbitrary degree. This allows to express the partition function of the O(n) loop model as a specialization of the multivariate generating function of maps with controlled face degrees, where the face weights are determined by a fixed point condition. We deduce a functional equation for the resolvent of the model, involving some ring generating function describing the immediate vicinity of the loops. When the ring generating function has a single pole, the model is amenable to a full solution. Physically, such situation is realized upon considering loops visiting triangles only and further weighting these loops by some local bending energy. Our model interpolates between the two previously solved cases of triangulations without bending energy and quadrangulations with rigid loops. We analyze the phase diagram of our model in details and derive in particular the location of its non-generic critical points, which are in the universality classes of the dense and dilute O(n) model coupled to 2D quantum gravity. Similar techniques are also used to solve a twisting loop model on quadrangulations where loops are forced to make turns within each visited square. Along the way, we revisit the problem of maps with controlled, possibly unbounded, face degrees and give combinatorial derivations of the one-cut lemma and of the functional equation for the resolvent.

Let V be an n-dimensional vector space and let On be the orthogonal group. Motivated by a question of B. Szegedy (B. Szegedy, Edge coloring models and reflection positivity, Journal of the American Mathematical Society Volume 20, Number 4, 2007), about the rank of edge connection matrices of partition functions of vertex models, we give a combinatorial parameterization of tensors in V \otimes k invariant under certain subgroups of the orthogonal group. This allows us to give an answer to this question for vertex models with values in an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero.
New enumeration formulas for alternating sign matrices and square ice partition functions

The refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices (ASMs) of given order having prescribed behavior near one or more of their boundary edges has been the subject of extensive study, starting with the Refined Alternating Sign Matrix Conjecture of Mills-Robbins-Rumsey, its proof by Zeilberger, and more recent work on doubly-refined and triply-refined enumeration by several authors. In this paper we extend the previously known results on this problem by deriving explicit enumeration formulas for the "top-left-bottom" (triply-refined) and "top-left-bottom-right" (quadruply-refined) enumerations. The latter case solves the problem of computing the full boundary correlation function for ASMs. The enumeration formulas are proved by deriving new representations, which are of independent interest, for the partition function of the square ice model with domain wall boundary conditions at the "combinatorial point" 2π/3.
Topology of RNA-RNA interaction structures

The topological filtration of interacting RNA complexes is studied and the role is analyzed of certain diagrams called irreducible shadows, which form suitable building blocks for more general structures. We prove that for two interacting RNAs, called interaction structures, there exist for fixed genus only finitely many irreducible shadows. This implies that for fixed genus there are only finitely many classes of interaction structures. In particular the simplest case of genus zero already provides the formalism for certain types of structures that occur in nature and are not covered by other filtrations. This case of genus zero interaction structures is already of practical interest, is studied here in detail and found to be expressed by a multiple context-free grammar extending the usual one for RNA secondary structures. We show that in $O(n^6)$ time and $O(n^4)$ space complexity, this grammar for genus zero interaction structures provides not only minimum free energy solutions but also the complete partition function and base pairing probabilities.
Macdonald processes

Macdonald processes are probability measures on sequences of partitions defined in terms of nonnegative specializations of the Macdonald symmetric functions and two Macdonald parameters q,t in [0,1). We prove several results about these processes, which include the following.
(1) We explicitly evaluate expectations of a rich family of observables for these processes. (2) In the case t=0, we find a Fredholm determinant formula for a q-Laplace transform of the distribution of the last part of the Macdonald-random partition. (3) We introduce Markov dynamics that preserve the class of Macdonald processes and lead to new "integrable" 2d and 1d interacting particle systems. (4) In a large time limit transition, and as q goes to 1, the particles of these systems crystallize on a lattice, and fluctuations around the lattice converge to O'Connell's Whittaker process that describe semi-discrete Brownian directed polymers. (5) This yields a Fredholm determinant for the Laplace transform of the polymer partition function, and taking its asymptotics we prove KPZ universality for the polymer (free energy fluctuation exponent 1/3 and Tracy-Widom GUE limit law). (6) Under intermediate disorder scaling, we recover the Laplace transform of the solution of the KPZ equation with narrow wedge initial data. (7) We provide contour integral formulas for a wide array of polymer moments. (8) This results in a new ansatz for solving quantum many body systems such as the delta Bose gas.
Generalization of a few results in Integer Partitions
In this paper, we generalize a few important results in Integer Partitions; namely the results known as Stanley's theorem and Elder's theorem, and the congruence results proposed by Ramanujan for the partition function. We generalize the results of Stanley and Elder from a fixed integer to an array of subsequent integers, and propose an analogue of Ramanujan's congruence relations for the `number of parts' function instead of the partition function. We also deduce the generating function for the `number of parts', and relate the technical results with their graphical interpretations through a novel use of the Ferrer's diagrams.

We study various mathematical aspects of discrete models on graphs, specifically the Dimer and the Ising models. We focus on proving gluing formulas for individual summands of the partition function. This paper deals with the partition function of the Ising model from statistical mechanics, which is used to study phase transitions in physical systems. A special case of interest is that of the Ising model with constant energies and external field. One may consider such an Ising system as a simple graph together with vertex and edge weights. When these weights are considered indeterminates, the partition function for the constant case is a trivariate polynomial Z(G;x,y,z). This polynomial was studied with respect to its approximability by L. A. Goldberg, M. Jerrum and M. Paterson in 2003. Z(G;x,y,z) generalizes a bivariate polynomial Z(G;t,y), which was studied by D. Andrén and K. Markström in 2009.
We consider the complexity of Z(G;t,y) and Z(G;x,y,z) in comparison to that of the Tutte polynomial, which is well-known to be closely related to the Potts model in the absence of an external field. We show that Z(G;\x,\y,\z) is #P-hard to evaluate at all points in $mathbb{Q}^3$, except those in an exception set of low dimension, even when restricted to simple graphs which are bipartite and planar. A counting version of the Exponential Time Hypothesis, #ETH, was introduced by H. Dell, T. Husfeldt and M. Wahlén in 2010 in order to study the complexity of the Tutte polynomial. In analogy to their results, we give a dichotomy theorem stating that evaluations of Z(G;t,y) either take exponential time in the number of vertices of $G$ to compute, or can be done in polynomial time. Finally, we give an algorithm for computing Z(G;x,y,z) in polynomial time on graphs of bounded clique-width, which is not known in the case of the Tutte polynomial.

We establish a fundamental connection between the geometric RSK correspondence and GL(N,R)-Whittaker functions, analogous to the well known relationship between the RSK correspondence and Schur functions. This gives rise to a natural family of measures associated with GL(N,R)-Whittaker functions which are the analogues in this setting of the Schur measures on integer partitions. The corresponding analogue of the Cauchy-Littlewood identity can be seen as a generalisation of an integral identity for GL(N,R)-Whittaker functions due to Bump and Stade. As an application, we obtain an explicit integral formula for the Laplace transform of the law of the partition function associated with a one-dimensional directed polymer model with log-gamma weights recently introduced by one of the authors (TS).
A conjecture on independent sets and graph covers
In this article, I present a conjecture on the number of independent sets on graph covers. I also show that the conjecture implies that the partition function of a binary pairwise attractive model is greater than that of the Bethe approximation.

We study partition functions for the dimer model on families of finite graphs converging to infinite self-similar graphs and forming approximation sequences to certain well-known fractals. The graphs that we consider are provided by actions of finitely generated groups by automorphisms on rooted trees, and thus their edges are naturally labeled by the generators of the group. It is thus natural to consider weight functions on these graphs taking different values according to the labeling. We study in detail the well-known example of the Hanoi Towers group $H^{(3)}$, closely related to the Sierpiński gasket.
