For $x\ge0$ let $π(x)$ be the number of primes not exceeding $x$. The asymptotic behaviors of the prime-counting function $π(x)$ and the $n$-th prime $p_n$ have been studied intensively in analytic number theory. Surprisingly, we find that $π(x)$ and $p_n$ have many combinatorial properties which should not be ignored. In this paper we pose 60 open problems on combinatorial properties of primes (including connections between primes and partition functions) for further research. For example, we conjecture that for any integer $n>1$ one of the $n$ numbers $π(n),π(2n),...,π(n^2)$ is prime; we also conjecture that for any integer $n>6$ there exists a prime $p<n$ such that $pn$ is a primitive root modulo $p_n$. One of our conjectures involving the partition function $p(n)$ states that for any prime $p$ there is a primitive root $g<p$ modulo $p$ with $g\in\{p(n):\ n=1,2,3,...\}$.

We define a non-commutative version of the $A_1$ T-system, which underlies frieze patterns of the integer plane. This system has discrete conserved quantities and has a particular reduction to the known non-commutative Q-system for $A_1$. We solve the system by generalizing the flat $GL_2$ connection method used in the commuting case to a 2$\times$2 flat matrix connection with non-commutative entries. This allows to prove the non-commutative positive Laurent phenomenon for the solutions when expressed in terms of admissible initial data. These are rephrased as partition functions of paths with non-commutative weights on networks, and alternatively of dimer configurations with non-commutative weights on ladder graphs made of chains of squares and hexagons.

We prove and conjecture some new symmetric function identities, which equate the generating series of 1. Plane partitions, subject to certain restrictions and weightings, and 2. Alternating sign matrices, subject to certain symmetry properties. The left hand side of each of our identities is a simple refinement of a relevant Cauchy or Littlewood identity, allowing them to be interpreted as generating series for plane partitions. The right hand side of each identity is a partition function of the six-vertex model, on a relevant domain. These can be interpreted as generating series for alternating sign matrices, using the well known bijection with six-vertex model configurations.
Some Families of Identities for Integer Partition Function
We give a series of recursive identities for the number of partitions with exactly $k$ parts and with constraints on both the minimal difference among the parts and the minimal part. Using these results we demonstrate that the number of partitions of $n$ is equal to the number of partitions of $2n+d{n \choose 2}$ with $n$ $d$-distant parts. We also provide a direct proof for this identity. This work is the result of our aim at finding a bijective proof for Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
From the Ising and Potts models to the general graph homomorphism polynomial
In this note we study some of the properties of the generating polynomial for homomorphisms from a graph to at complete weighted graph on $q$ vertices. We discuss how this polynomial relates to a long list of other well known graph polynomials and the partition functions for different spin models, many of which are specialisations of the homomorphism polynomial.
We also identify the smallest graphs which are not determined by their homomorphism polynomials for $q=2$ and $q=3$ and compare this with the corresponding minimal examples for the $U$-polynomial, which generalizes the well known Tutte-polynomal.
A combinatorial proof on partition function parity
One of the most basic results concerning the number-theoretic properties of the partition function $p(n)$ is that $p(n)$ takes each value of parity infinitely often. This statement was first proved by Kolberg in 1959, and it was strengthened by Subbarao in 1966 to say that both $p(2n)$ and $p(2n+1)$ take each value of parity infinitely often. These results have received several other proofs, each relying to some extent on manipulating generating functions. We give a new, self-contained proof of Subbarao's result by constructing a series of bijections and involutions, along the way getting a more general theorem concerning the enumeration of a special subset of integer partitions.

Even though weight multiplicity formulas, such as Kostant's formula, exist their computational use is extremely cumbersome. In fact, even in cases when the multiplicity is well understood, the number of terms considered in Kostant's formula is factorial in the rank of the Lie algebra and the value of the partition function is unknown. In this paper we address the difficult question: What are the contributing terms to the multiplicity of the zero weight in the adjoint representation of a finite dimensional Lie algebra? We describe and enumerate the cardinalities of these sets (through linear homogeneous recurrence relations with constant coefficients) for the classical Lie algebras of Type $B$, $C$, and $D$, the Type $A$ case was computed by the first author in [5]. In addition, we compute the cardinality of the set of contributing terms for non-zero weight spaces in the adjoint representation. In the Type $B$ case, the cardinality of one such non-zero-weight is enumerated by the Fibonacci numbers. We end with a computational proof of a result of Kostant regarding the exponents of the respective Lie algebra for some low rank examples and provide a section with open problems in this area.
Graph theory and Pfaffian representations of Ising partition function
A well known theorem due to Kasteleyn states that the partition function of an Ising model on an arbitrary planar graph can be represented as the Pfaffian of a skew-symmetric matrix associated to the graph. This results both embodies the free fermionic nature of any planar Ising model and eventually gives an effective way of computing its partition functions in closed form. An extension of this result to non planar models expresses the partition function as a sum of Pfaffians which number is related to the genus of the oriented surface on which the graph can be embedded. In graph theory, McLane's theorem (1937) gives a characterization of planarity as a property of the cycle space of a graph, and recently, Diestel et al. (2009) extended this approach to embeddings in arbitrary surfaces. Here we show that McLane's approach naturally leads to Kasteleyn's results: McLane characterization of planar graphs is just what is needed to turn an Ising partition function into a Pfaffian. Using this approach, we prove that the Ising partition function on an arbitrary non planar graph can be written as \emph{the real part}of the Pfaffian of a single matrix with coefficients taken in a multicomplex algebra $\C_{\tilde g}$, where $\tilde g$ is the non-orientable genus, or crosscap number, of the embedding surface. Known representations as sums of Pfaffians follow from this result. In particular, Kasteleyn's result which involves $4^g$ matrices with real coefficients, $g$ orientable genus, is also recovered through some algebraic reduction.
A Statistical Model of Current Loops and Magnetic Monopoles

We formulate a natural model of current loops and magnetic monopoles for arbitrary planar graphs, which we call the monopole-dimer model, and express the partition function of this model as a determinant. We then extend the method of Kasteleyn and Temperley-Fisher to calculate the partition function exactly in the case of rectangular grids. This partition function turns out to be a square of the partition function of an emergent monomer-dimer model when the grid sizes are even. We use this formula to calculate the local monopole density, free energy and entropy exactly. Our technique is a novel determinantal formula for the partition function of a model of vertices and loops for arbitrary graphs.

The $U$-polynomial of Noble and Welsh is known to have intimate connections with the Potts model as well as with several important graph polynomials. For each graph $G$, $U(G)$ is equivalent to Stanley's symmetric bad colouring polynomial $XB(G)$. Moreover Sarmiento established the equivalence between $U$ and the polychromate of Brylawski. Loebl defined the $q$-dichromate $B_q(G,x,y)$ as a function of a graph $G$ and three independent variables $q,x,y$, proved that it is equal to the partition function of the Potts model with variable number of states and with a certain external field contribution, and conjectured that the $q$-dichromate is equivalent to the $U$-polynomial. He also proposed a stronger conjecture on integer partitions. The aim of this paper is two-fold. We present a construction disproving Loebl's integer partitions conjecture, and we introduce a new function $B_{r,q}(G;x,k)$ which is also equal to the partition function of the Potts model with variable number of states and with a (different) external field contribution, and we show that $B_{r,q}(G;x,k)$ is equivalent to the $U$-polynomial and to Stanley's symmetric bad colouring polynomial.

We prove that the partition function $p(n)$ is log-concave for all $n>25$. We then extend the results to resolve two related conjectures by Chen. The proofs are based on Lehmer's estimates on the remainders of the Hardy--Ramanujan and the Rademacher series for $p(n)$.
Beyond Log-Supermodularity: Lower Bounds and the Bethe Partition Function
A recent result has demonstrated that the Bethe partition function always lower bounds the true partition function of binary, log-supermodular graphical models. We demonstrate that these results can be extended to other interesting classes of graphical models that are not necessarily binary or log-supermodular: the ferromagnetic Potts model with a uniform external field and its generalizations and special classes of weighted graph homomorphism problems.

The homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian Gr(k,n) has a cluster structure defined in terms of planar diagrams known as Postnikov diagrams. The cluster corresponding to such a diagram consists entirely of Pluecker coordinates. We introduce a twist map on Gr(k,n), related to the Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky-twist, and give an explicit Laurent expansion for the twist of an arbitrary Pluecker coordinate in terms of the cluster variables associated with a fixed Postnikov diagram. The expansion arises as a (scaled) dimer partition function of a weighted version of the bipartite graph dual to the Postnikov diagram, modified by a boundary condition determined by the Pluecker coordinate. We also relate the twist map to a maximal green sequence.

Consideration of a classification of the number of partitions of a natural number according to the members of sub-partitions differing from unity leads to a non-recursive formula for the number of irreducible representations of the symmetric group Sn. This article was published, long ago, under the title A non-recursive expression for the number of irreducible representations of the Symmetric Group Sn, Physica 114A, 1982, 361-364, North-Holland Publishing Co. The Introduction has been, somewhat, improved, however, the handmade result remains unproved.

We study the solutions of the T-system for type A, also known as the octahedron equation, viewed as a 2+1-dimensional discrete evolution equation. These may be expressed entirely in terms of the stepped surface over which the initial data are specified, via a suitably defined flat $GL_n$ connection which embodies the integrability of this infinite rank system. By interpreting the connection as the transfer operator for a directed graph or network with weighted edges, we show that the solution at a given point is expressed as the partition function for dimers on a bipartite graph dual to the "shadow" of the point onto the initial data stepped surface. We extend the result to the case of other geometries such as that of the evaporation of a cube corner crystal, and to a reformulation of the Kenyon-Pemantle discrete hexahedron equation.
Partition functions for dense instances of combinatorial enumeration problems
Given a complete graph with positive weights on its edges, we define the weight of a subset of edges as the product of weights of the edges in the subset and consider sums (partition functions) of weights over subsets of various kinds: cycle covers, closed walks, spanning trees. We show that if the weights of the edges of the graph are within a constant factor, fixed in advance, of each other then the bulk of the partition function is concentrated on the subsets of a particularly simple structure: cycle covers with few cycles, walks that visit every vertex only few times, and spanning trees with small degree of every vertex. This allows us to construct a polynomial time algorithm to separate graphs with many Hamiltonian cycles from graphs that are sufficiently far from Hamiltonian.
On Generalizing a Temporal Formalism for Game Theory to the Asymptotic Combinatorics of S5 Modal Frames
A temporal-theoretic formalism for understanding game theory is described where a strict ordering relation on a set of time points $T$ defines a game on $T$. Using this formalism, a proof of Zermelo's Theorem, which states that every finite 2-player zero-sum game is determined, is given and an exhaustive analysis of the game of Nim is presented. Furthermore, a combinatorial analysis of games on a set of arbitrary time points is given; in particular, it is proved that the number of distinct games on a set $T$ with cardinality $n$ is the number of partial orders on a set of $n$ elements. By generalizing this theorem from temporal modal frames to S5 modal frames, it is proved that the number of isomorphism classes of S5 modal frames $\mathcal{F} = \ < W, R \ >$ with $|W|=n$ is equal to the partition function $p(n)$. As a corollary of the fact that the partition function is asymptotic to the Hardy-Ramanujan number $$\frac{1}{4\sqrt{3}n}e^{π\sqrt{2n/3}}$$ the number of isomorphism classes of S5 modal frames $\mathcal{F} = \ < W, R \ >$ with $|W|=n$ is asymptotically the Hardy-Ramanujan number. Lastly, we use these results to prove that an arbitrary modal frame is an S5 modal frame with probability zero.

In this paper we present a sampling framework for RNA structures of fixed topological genus. We introduce a novel, linear time, uniform sampling algorithm for RNA structures of fixed topological genus $g$, for arbitrary $g>0$. Furthermore we develop a linear time sampling algorithm for RNA structures of fixed topological genus $g$ that are weighted by a simplified, loop-based energy functional. For this process the partition function of the energy functional has to be computed once, which has $O(n^2)$ time complexity.

We study the remarkable Saxl conjecture which states that tensor squares of certain irreducible representations of the symmetric groups S_n contain all irreducibles as their constituents. Our main result is that they contain representations corresponding to hooks and two row Young diagrams. For that, we develop a new sufficient condition for the positivity of Kronecker coefficients in terms of characters, and use combinatorics of rim hook tableaux combined with known results on unimodality of certain partition functions. We also present connections and speculations on random characters of S_n.
