New Weighted Partition Theorems with the Emphasis on the Smallest Part of Partitions

We use the $q$-binomial theorem, the $q$-Gauss sum, and the ${}_2φ_1 \rightarrow {}_2φ_2$ transformation of Jackson to discover and prove many new weighted partition identities. These identities involve unrestricted partitions, overpartitions, and partitions with distinct even parts. Smallest part of the partitions plays an important role in our analysis. This work was motivated in part by the research of Krishna Alladi.

We prove a general theorem on overpartitions with difference conditions that unifies generalisations of Schur's theorem due to Alladi-Gordon, Andrews, Corteel-Lovejoy and the author. This theorem also allows one to give companions and refinements of the generalisations of Andrews' theorems to overpartitions. The proof relies on the method of weighted words of Alladi and Gordon and $q$-difference equation techniques introduced recently by the author.

Recently, Shen (2016) and Alanazi et al. (2016) studied the arithmetic properties of the $\ell$-regular overpartition function $\overline{A}_\ell (n)$, which counts the number of overpartitions of $n$ into parts not divisible by $\ell$. In this note, we will present some new congruences modulo $5$ when $\ell$ is a power of $5$.

We study $ν_k(n)$, the number of partitions of $n$ into $k$ part sizes, and find numerous arithmetic progressions where $ν_2$ and $ν_3$ take on values divisible by 2 and 4. Expanding earlier work, we show $ν_2(An+B) \equiv 0 \pmod{4}$ for (A,B) = (36,30), (72,42), (252,114), (196,70), and likely many other progressions for which our method should easily generalize. Of some independent interest, we prove that the overpartition function $\bar{p}(n) \equiv 0 \pmod{16}$ in the first three progressions (the fourth is known), and thereby show that $ν_3(An+B) \equiv 0 \pmod{2}$ in each of these progressions as well, and discuss the relationship between these congruences in more generality. We end with open questions in this area.

In 1968 and 1969, Andrews proved two partition theorems of the Rogers-Ramanujan type which generalise Schur's celebrated partition identity (1926). Andrews' two generalisations of Schur's theorem went on to become two of the most influential results in the theory of partitions, finding applications in combinatorics, representation theory and quantum algebra. In a recent paper, the author generalised the first of these theorems to overpartitions, using a new technique which consists in going back and forth between $q$-difference equations on generating functions and recurrence equations on their coefficients. Here, using a similar method, we generalise the second theorem of Andrews to overpartitions.

Let ${\overline{p}_{3}}(n)$ be the number of overpartition triples of $n$. By elementary series manipulations, we establish some congruences for ${\overline{p}}_{3}(n)$ modulo small powers of 2, such as
\[{\overline{p}_{3}}(16n+14)\equiv 0 \pmod{32}, \quad {\overline{p}_{3}}(8n+7)\equiv 0 \pmod{64}.\] We also find many arithmetic properties for ${\overline{p}_{3}}(n)$ modulo 7, 9 and 11, involving the following infinite families of Ramanujan-type congruences: for any integers $α\ge 1$ and $n \ge 0$, we have ${\overline{p}_{3}}\big({{3}^{2α+1}}(3n+2)\big)\equiv 0$ (mod $9\cdot 2^4$), $\overline{p}_{3}(4^{α-1}(56n+49)) \equiv 0$ (mod 7) and \[{\overline{p}_{3}}\big({{7}^{2α+1}}(7n+3)\big)\equiv {\overline{p}_{3}}\big({{7}^{2α+1}}(7n+5)\big)\equiv {\overline{p}_{3}}\big({{7}^{2α+1}}(7n+6)\big)\equiv 0 \pmod{7}.\]

We define an overpartition analogue of Gaussian polynomials (also known as $q$-binomial coefficients) as a generating function for the number of overpartitions fitting inside the $M \times N$ rectangle. We call these new polynomials over Gaussian polynomials or over $q$-binomial coefficients. We investigate basic properties and applications of over $q$-binomial coefficients. In particular, via the recurrences and combinatorial interpretations of over q-binomial coefficients, we prove a Rogers-Ramaujan type partition theorem.
Bressoud Style Identities for Regular Partitions and Overpartitions
We construct a family of partition identities which contain the following identities: Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon identities, Bressoud's even moduli generalization of them, and their counterparts for overpartitions due to Lovejoy et al. and Chen et al. We obtain unusual companion identities to known theorems as well as to the new ones in the process. The proof is, against tradition, constructive and open to automation.

We generalize overpartitions to (k,j)-colored partitions: k-colored partitions in which each part size may have at most j colors. We find numerous congruences and other symmetries. We use a wide array of tools to prove our theorems: generating function dissections, modular forms, bijections, and other combinatorial maps. We find connections to divisor sums, the Han/Nekrasov-Okounkov hook length formula and a possible approach to a finitization, and other topics, suggesting that a rich mine of results is available.

Let $\overline{p}(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$. Recently, Fortin-Jacob-Mathieu and Hirschhorn-Sellers independently obtained 2-, 3- and 4-dissections of the generating function for $\overline{p}(n)$ and derived a number of congruences for $\overline{p}(n)$ modulo $4$, $8$ and $64$ including $\overline{p}(5n+2)\equiv 0 \pmod{4}$, $\overline{p}(4n+3)\equiv 0 \pmod{8}$ and $\overline{p}(8n+7)\equiv 0 \pmod{64}$. By employing dissection techniques, Yao and Xia obtained congruences for $\overline{p}(n)$ modulo $8, 16$ and $32$, such as $\overline{p}(48n+26) \equiv 0 \pmod{8}$, $\overline{p}(24n+17)\equiv 0 \pmod{16}$ and $\overline{p}(72n+69)\equiv 0 \pmod{32}$. In this paper, we give a 16-dissection of the generating function for $\overline{p}(n)$ modulo 16 and we show that $\overline{p}(16n+14)\equiv0\pmod{16}$ for $n\ge 0$. Moreover, by using the $2$-adic expansion of the generating function of $\overline{p}(n)$ due to Mahlburg, we obtain that $\overline{p}(\ell^2n+r\ell)\equiv0\pmod{16}$, where $n\ge 0$, $\ell \equiv -1\pmod{8}$ is an odd prime and $r$ is a positive integer with $\ell \nmid r$. In particular, for $\ell=7$, we get $\overline{p}(49n+7)\equiv0\pmod{16}$ and $\overline{p}(49n+14)\equiv0\pmod{16}$ for $n\geq 0$. We also find four congruence relations: $\overline{p}(4n)\equiv(-1)^n\overline{p}(n) \pmod{16}$ for $n\ge 0$, $\overline{p}(4n)\equiv(-1)^n\overline{p}(n)\pmod{32}$ for $n$ being not a square of an odd positive integer, $\overline{p}(4n)\equiv(-1)^n\overline{p}(n)\pmod{64}$ for $n\not\equiv 1,2,5\pmod{8}$ and $\overline{p}(4n)\equiv(-1)^n\overline{p}(n)\pmod{128}$ for $n\equiv 0\pmod{4}$.

Let $\overline{p}(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$. Hirschhorn and Sellers showed that $\overline{p}(4n+3)\equiv 0 \pmod{8}$ for $n\geq 0$. They also conjectured that $\overline{p}(40n+35)\equiv 0 \pmod{40}$ for $n\geq 0$. Chen and Xia proved this conjecture by using the $(p,k)$-parametrization of theta functions given by Alaca, Alaca and Williams. In this paper, we show that $\overline{p}(5n)\equiv (-1)^{n}\overline{p}(4\cdot 5n) \pmod{5}$ for $n \geq 0$ and $\overline{p}(n)\equiv (-1)^{n}\overline{p}(4n)\pmod{8}$ for $n \geq 0$ by using the relation of the generating function of $\overline{p}(5n)$ modulo $5$ found by Treneer and the $2$-adic expansion of the generating function of $\overline{p}(n)$ due to Mahlburg. As a consequence, we deduce that $\overline{p}(4^k(40n+35))\equiv 0 \pmod{40}$ for $n,k\geq 0$. Furthermore, applying the Hecke operator on $φ(q)^3$ and the fact that $φ(q)^3$ is a Hecke eigenform, we obtain an infinite family of congrences $\overline{p}(4^k \cdot5\ell^2n)\equiv 0 \pmod{5}$, where $k\ge 0$ and $\ell$ is a prime such that $\ell\equiv3 \pmod{5}$ and $\left(\frac{-n}{\ell}\right)=-1$. Moreover, we show that $\overline{p}(5^{2}n)\equiv \overline{p}(5^{4}n) \pmod{5}$ for $n \ge 0$. So we are led to the congruences $\overline{p}\big(4^k5^{2i+3}(5n\pm1)\big)\equiv 0 \pmod{5}$ for $n, k, i\ge 0$. In this way, we obtain various Ramanujan-type congruences for $\overline{p}(n)$ modulo $5$ such as $\overline{p}(45(3n+1))\equiv 0 \pmod{5}$ and $\overline{p}(125(5n\pm 1))\equiv 0 \pmod{5}$ for $n\geq 0$.

In a very recent work, G. E. Andrews defined the combinatorial objects which he called {\it singular overpartitions} with the goal of presenting a general theorem for overpartitions which is analogous to theorems of Rogers--Ramanujan type for ordinary partitions with restricted successive ranks. As a small part of his work, Andrews noted two congruences modulo 3 which followed from elementary generating function manipulations. In this work, we prove that Andrews' results modulo 3 are two examples of an infinite family of congruences modulo 3 which hold for that particular function. We also expand the consideration of such arithmetic properties to other functions which are part of Andrews' framework for singular overpartitions.

We obtain two-variable Hecke-Rogers identities for three universal mock theta functions. This implies that many of Ramanujan's mock theta functions, including all the third order functions, have a Hecke-Rogers-type double sum representation. We find new generating function identities for the Dyson rank function, the overpartition rank function, the M2-rank function and related spt-crank functions. Results are proved using the theory of basic hypergeometric functions.

In this paper we obtain asymptotic formulas for the positive crank and rank moments for overpartitions. Moreover, we show that crank and rank moments are asymptotically equal while the difference is asymptotically positive. This indicates that there exist analogous higher ospt-functions for overpartitions, which we define.

In 2003, Atkin and Garvan initiated the study of rank and crank moments for ordinary partitions. These moments satisfy a strict inequality. We prove that a strict inequality also holds for the first rank and crank moments of overpartitions and consider a new combinatorial interpretation in this setting.

Let $\bar{p}(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$. It was conjectured by Hirschhorn and Sellers that $\bar{p}(40n+35)\equiv 0\ ({\rm mod\} 40)$ for $n\geq 0$. Employing 2-dissection formulas of quotients of theta functions due to Ramanujan, and Hirschhorn and Sellers, we obtain a generating function for $\bar{p}(40n+35)$ modulo 5. Using the $(p, k)$-parametrization of theta functions given by Alaca, Alaca and Williams, we give a proof of the congruence $\bar{p}(40n+35)\equiv 0\ ({\rm mod\} 5)$. Combining this congruence and the congruence $\bar{p}(4n+3)\equiv 0\ ({\rm mod\} 8)$ obtained by Hirschhorn and Sellers, and Fortin, Jacob and Mathieu, we give a proof of the conjecture of Hirschhorn and Sellers.

We find that a wide variety of families of partition statistics stabilize in a fashion similar to $p_k(n)$, the number of partitions of n with k parts, which satisfies $p_k(n) = p_{k+1}(n + 1), k \geq n/2$. We bound the regions of stabilization, discuss variants on the phenomenon, and give the limiting sequence in many cases as the coefficients of a single-variable generating function. Examples include many statistics that have an Euler product form, partitions with prescribed subsums, and plane overpartitions.

Two new expansions for partial sums of Gauss' triangular and square numbers series are given. As a consequence, we derive a family of inequalities for the overpartition function $\bar{p}(n)$ and for the partition function $p_1(n)$ counting the partitions of $n$ with distinct odd parts. Some further inequalities for variations of partition function are proposed as conjectures.

For $k\geq i\geq 1$, let $B_{k,i}(n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ such that part 1 appears at most $i-1$ times, two consecutive integers l and $l+1$ appear at most $k-1$ times and if l and $l+1$ appear exactly $k-1$ times then the total sum of the parts l and $l+1$ is congruent to $i-1$ modulo 2. Let $A_{k,i}(n)$ denote the number of partitions with parts not congruent to $i$, $2k-i$ and $2k$ modulo $2k$. Bressoud's theorem states that $A_{k,i}(n)=B_{k,i}(n)$. Corteel, Lovejoy, and Mallet found an overpartition analogue of Bressoud's theorem for $i=1$, that is, for partitions not containing nonoverlined part 1. We obtain an overpartition analogue of Bressoud's theorem in the general case. For $k\geq i\geq 1$, let $D_{k,i}(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$ such that the nonoverlined part 1 appears at most $i-1$ times, for any integer $l$, $l$ and nonoverlined $l+1$ appear at most $k-1$ times and if the parts $l$ and the nonoverlined part $l+1$ appear exactly $k-1$ times then the total sum of the parts $l$ and nonoverlined part $l+1$ is congruent to the number of overlined parts that are less than $l+1$ plus $i-1$ modulo 2. Let $C_{k,i}(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions with the nonoverlined parts not congruent to $\pm i$ and $2k-1$ modulo $2k-1$. We show that $C_{k,i}(n)=D_{k,i}(n)$. This relation can also be considered as a Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon type theorem for overpartitions.
