A characterization of the space of symmetric Laurent polynomials of type $(BC)_n$ which vanish on a certain set of submanifolds is given by using the Koornwinder-Macdonald polynomials. A similar characterization was given previously for symmetric polynomials of type $A_n$ by using the Macdonald polynomials. We use a new method which exploits the duality relation. The method simplifies a part of the proof in the $A_n$ case.

Let R_n be the ring of coinvariants for the diagonal action of the symmetric group S_n. It is known that the character of R_n as a doubly-graded S_n module can be expressed using the Frobenius characteristic map as \nabla e_n, where e_n is the n-th elementary symmetric function, and \nabla is an operator from the theory of Macdonald polynomials.
We conjecture a combinatorial formula for \nabla e_n and prove that it has many desirable properties which support our conjecture. In particular, we prove that our formula is a symmetric function (which is not obvious) and that it is Schur positive. These results make use of the theory of ribbon tableau generating functions of Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon. We also show that a variety of earlier conjectures and theorems on \nabla e_n are special cases of our conjecture.
Finally, we extend our conjectures on \nabla e_n and several of the results supporting them to higher powers \nabla^m e_n.

We consider semisimple triangular operators acting in the symmetric component of the group algebra over the weight lattice of a root system. We present a determinantal formula for the eigenbasis of such triangular operators. This determinantal formula gives rise to an explicit construction of the Macdonald polynomials and of the Heckman-Opdam generalized Jacobi polynomials.

We construct explicitly non-polynomial eigenfunctions of the difference operators by Macdonald in case $t=q^k$, $k\in{\mathbb Z}$. This leads to a new, more elementary proof of several Macdonald conjectures, first proved by Cherednik. We also establish the algebraic integrability of Macdonald operators at $t=q^k$ ($k\in {\mathbb Z}$), generalizing the result of Etingof and Styrkas. Our approach works uniformly for all root systems including $BC_n$ case and related Koornwinder polynomials. Moreover, we apply it for a certain deformation of $A_n$ root system where the previously known methods do not work.
Symmetric polynomials vanishing on the shifted diagonals and Macdonald polynomials
For each pair (k,r) of positive integers with r>1, we consider an ideal I^(k,r)_n of the ring of symmetric polynomials in n variables. The ideal I_n^(k,r) has a basis consisting of Macdonald polynomials P(x_1,...,x_n;q,t) at t^{k+1}q^{r-1}=1, and is a deformed version of the one studied earlier in the context of Jack polynomials.
In this paper we give a characterization of I^(k,r)_n in terms of explicit zero conditions on the k-codimensional shifted diagonals of the form x_{2}=tq^{s_1}x_1,...,x_{k+1}=tq^{s_k}x_k.
The ideal I^(k,r)_n may be viewed as a deformation of the space of correlation functions of an abelian current of the affine Lie algebra \hat{sl_r}. We give a brief discussion about this connection.

We obtain general identities for the product of two Schur functions in the case where one of the functions is indexed by a rectangular partition, and give their t-analogs using vertex operators. We study subspaces forming a filtration for the symmetric function space that lends itself to generalizing the theory of Schur functions and also provides a convenient environment for studying the Macdonald polynomials. We use our identities to prove that the vertex operators leave such subspaces invariant. We finish by showing that these operators act simply on the k-Schur functions, thus leading to a concept of irreducibility for these functions.

We consider a filtration of the symmetric function space given by $Λ^{(k)}_t$, the linear span of Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by partitions whose first part is not larger than $k$. We introduce symmetric functions called the $k$-Schur functions, providing an analog for the Schur functions in the subspaces $Λ^{(k)}_t$. We prove several properties for the $k$-Schur functions including that they form a basis for these subspaces that reduces to the Schur basis when $k$ is large. We also show that the connection coefficients for the $k$-Schur function basis with the Macdonald polynomials belonging to $Λ^{(k)}_t$ are polynomials in $q$ and $t$ with integral coefficients. In fact, we conjecture that these integral coefficients are actually positive, and give several other conjectures generalizing Schur function theory.

We know the multiplicity of the adjoint representation of a semisimple Lie algebra in its own exterior algebra, but how do its copies distribute themselves between the exterior powers? The answer (the graded multiplicity) is obtained with the aid of Macdonald polynomials.

Let R and S be two irreducible root systems spanning the same vector space and having the same Weyl group W, such that S (but not necessarily R) is reduced. For each such pair (R,S) we construct a family of W-invariant orthogonal polynomials in several variables, whose coefficients are rational functions of parameters $q,t_1,t_2,...,t_r$, where r (=1,2 or 3) is the number of W-orbits in R. For particular values of these parameters, these polynomials give the values of zonal spherical functions on real and p-adic symmetric spaces. Also when R=S is of type $A_n$, they conincide with the symmetric polynomials described in I. G. Macdonald, Symmetric Functions and Hall Polynomials, 2nd edition, Oxford University Press (1995), Chapter VI.

For any homomorphism V on the space of symmetric functions, we introduce an operation which creates a q-analog of V. By giving several examples we demonstrate that this quantization occurs naturally within the theory of symmetric functions. In particular, we show that the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions are formed by taking this q-analog of the Schur symmetric functions and the Macdonald symmetric functions appear by taking the q-analog of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions in the parameter t. This relation is then used to derive recurrences on the Macdonald q,t-Kostka coefficients.

We give a direct proof of the combinatorial formula for interpolation Macdonald polynomials by introducing certain polynomials, which we call generic Macdonald polynomials, which depend on $d$ additional parameters and specialize to all Macdonald polynomials of degree $d$. The form of these generic polynomials is that of a Bethe eigenfunction and they imitate, on a more elementary level, the $R$-matrix construction of quantum immanants.

Let $Λ$ be the space of symmetric functions and $V_k$ be the subspace spanned by the modified Schur functions $\{S_λ[X/(1-t)]\}_{λ_1\leq k}$. We introduce a new family of symmetric polynomials, $\{A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]\}_{λ_1\leq k}$, constructed from sums of tableaux using the charge statistic. We conjecture that the polynomials $A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]$ form a basis for $V_k$ and that the Macdonald polynomials indexed by partitions whose first part is not larger than $k$ expand positively in terms of our polynomials. A proof of this conjecture would not only imply the Macdonald positivity conjecture, but would substantially refine it. Our construction of the $A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]$ relies on the use of tableaux combinatorics and yields various properties and conjectures on the nature of these polynomials. Another important development following from our investigation is that the $A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]$ seem to play the same role for $V_k$ as the Schur functions do for $Λ$. In particular, this has led us to the discovery of many generalizations of properties held by the Schur functions, such as Pieri and Littlewood-Richardson type coefficients.

New Examples of Potential Theory on Bratelli Diagrams
We consider potential theory on Bratteli diagrams arising from Macdonald polynomials. The case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials is particularly interesting; the elements of the diagram are partitions, the branching multiplicities are integers, the combinatorial dimensions are Green's polynomials, and the Jordan form of a randomly chosen unipotent upper triangular matrix over a finite field gives rise to a harmonic function. The case of Schur functions yields natural deformations of the Young lattice and Plancharel measure. Many harmonic functions are constructed and algorithms for sampling from the underlying probability measures are given.

The Macdonald polynomials expanded in terms of a modified Schur function basis have coefficients called the $q,t$-Kostka polynomials. We define operators to build standard tableaux and show that they are equivalent to creation operators that recursively build the Macdonald polynomials indexed by two part partitions. We uncover a new basis for these particular Macdonald polynomials and in doing so are able to give an explicit description of their associated $q,t$-Kostka coefficients by assigning a statistic in $q$ and $t$ to each standard tableau.

The lattice cell in the ${i+1}^{st}$ row and ${j+1}^{st}$ column of the positive quadrant of the plane is denoted $(i,j)$. If $μ$ is a partition of $n+1$, we denote by $μ/ij$ the diagram obtained by removing the cell $(i,j)$ from the (French) Ferrers diagram of $μ$. We set $Δ_{μ/ij}=\det \| x_i^{p_j}y_i^{q_j} \|_{i,j=1}^n$, where $(p_1,q_1),... ,(p_n,q_n)$ are the cells of $μ/ij$, and let ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ be the linear span of the partial derivatives of $Δ_{μ/ij}$. The bihomogeneity of $Δ_{μ/ij}$ and its alternating nature under the diagonal action of $S_n$ gives ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ the structure of a bigraded $S_n$-module. We conjecture that ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ is always a direct sum of $k$ left regular representations of $S_n$, where $k$ is the number of cells that are weakly north and east of $(i,j)$ in $μ$. We also make a number of conjectures describing the precise nature of the bivariate Frobenius characteristic of ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ in terms of the theory of Macdonald polynomials. On the validity of these conjectures, we derive a number of surprising identities. In particular, we obtain a representation theoretical interpretation of the coefficients appearing in some Macdonald Pieri Rules.
