A permutation based approach to the $q$-deformation of the Dynkin Operator
Introduced by Solomon, the descent algebra is a significant subalgebra of the group algebra of the symmetric group $\mathbf{k}S_n$ related to many important algebraic and combinatorial topics. It contains all the classical Lie idempotents of $\mathbf{k}S_n$, in particular the Dynkin operator, a fundamental tool for studying the free Lie algebra. We look at a $q$-deformation of the Dynkin operator and study its action over the descent algebra with classical combinatorial tools like Solomon's Mackey formula. This leads to elementary proofs that the operator is indeed an idempotent for $q=1$ as well as to interesting formulas and algebraic structures especially when $q$ is a root of unity.
Normality conditions in the Sylow $\boldsymbol{p}$-subgroup of $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{Sym}(p^n)}$ and its associated Lie algebra
Published in Journal of Algebra, Volume 689, 1 March 2026, Pages 747-763 • View Publication • BIB
In this work, we give a description of the structure of the normal subgroups of a Sylow $p$-subgroup $W_n$ of $\mathrm{Sym}(p^n)$, showing that they contain a term from the lower central series with bounded index. To this end, we explicitly determine the terms of the upper and the lower central series of $W_n$. We provide a similar description of these series in the Lie algebra associated to $W_n$, giving a new proof of the equality of their terms in both the group and the algebra contexts. Finally, we calculate the growth of the normalizer chain starting from an elementary abelian regular subgroup of $W_n$.

Log-concavity of characters of parabolic Verma modules, and of restricted Kostant partition functions
In 2022, Huh-Matherne-Mészáros-St. Dizier showed that normalized Schur polynomials are Lorentzian, thereby yielding their continuous (resp. discrete) log-concavity on the positive orthant (resp. on their support, in type $A$ root directions). A reinterpretation of this result is that the characters of finite-dimensional simple representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ are denormalized Lorentzian (DL). In the same paper, these authors also showed that shifted characters of Verma modules over $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ are DL. In this work we extend these results to a larger family of modules that subsumes both of the above: we show that shifted characters of all parabolic Verma modules over $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ are denormalized Lorentzian. The proof involves certain graphs on $[n+1]$; more strongly, we explain why the character (i.e., generating function) of the Kostant partition function of any loopless multigraph on $[n+1]$ is Lorentzian after shifting and normalizing. We then show that parabolic Vermas form a "maximal" class with log-concave (hence DL) characters. Namely, log-concavity fails in greater generality along three natural directions: (1) it does not hold for every simple Lie type, (2) nor for a larger universal family of highest weight modules, the higher order Verma modules, even in type $A$, and (3) it does not always hold for important generalizations of Schur polynomials: the Jack and Macdonald polynomials. Finally, we extend these results to parabolic (i.e. "first order") and higher order Verma modules over the semisimple Lie algebras $\oplus_{t=1}^T \mathfrak{sl}_{n_t+1}(\mathbb{C})$. We also partially resolve a conjecture of Huh et al on the DL property for integral highest weight simple modules.

Some results on the higher-rank graphs associated to crystals of semisimple Lie algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we continue the study of the higher-rank graphs associated to finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebras, introduced by the author and R. Yuncken, whose construction relies on Kashiwara's theory of crystals. First we prove that the Bruhat graphs of the corresponding Weyl groups, both weak and strong, can be embedded into the higher-rank graphs as colored graphs. Next, specializing to Lie algebras of type $A$, we connect some aspects of the construction of the higher-rank graphs with some well-known notions in combinatorics, most notably the keys of Lascoux and Schützenberger.

Fundamental groups of moduli spaces of real weighted stable curves
The ordinary and $S_n$-equivariant fundamental groups of the moduli space $\overline{M_{0,n+1}}(\mathbb{R})$ of real $(n+1)$-marked stable curves of genus $0$ are known as \emph{cactus groups} $J_n$ and have applications both in geometry and the representation theory of Lie algebras. In this paper, we compute the ordinary and $S_n$-equivariant fundamental groups of the Hassett space of weighted real stable curves $\overline{M_{0,\mathcal{A}}}(\mathbb{R})$ with $S_n$-symmetric weight vector $\mathcal{A} = (1/a, \ldots, 1/a, 1)$, which we call \emph{weighted cactus groups} $J_n^a$. We show that $J_n^a$ is obtained from the usual cactus presentation by introducing braid relations, which successively simplify the group from $J_n$ to $S_n \rtimes \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ as $a$ increases. Our proof is by decomposing $\overline{M_{0,\mathcal{A}}}(\mathbb{R})$ as a polytopal complex, generalizing a similar known decomposition for $\overline{M_{0,n+1}}(\mathbb{R})$. In the unweighted case, these cells are known to be cubes and are `dual' to the usual decomposition into associahedra (by the combinatorial type of the stable curve). For $\overline{M_{0,\mathcal{A}}}(\mathbb{R})$, our decomposition instead consists of products of permutahedra. The cells of the decomposition are indexed by weighted stable trees, but `dually' to the usual indexing.
The Terwilliger algebra of digraphs I -- Hamming digraph $H^*(d,3)$
In the present paper, we define the Terwilliger algebra of digraphs. Then, we determine the irreducible modules of the Terwilliger algebra of a Hamming digraph $H^*(d,3)$. As is well known, the representation of the Terwilliger algebra of a binary Hamming graph $H(d,2)$ is closely related to that of the Lie algebra $\mathit{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$. We show that in the case of $H^*(d,3)$, it is related to that of the Lie algebra $\mathit{sl}_3(\mathbb{C})$. We also identify the Terwilliger algebra of $H^*(d,3)$ as the $d$ symmetric tensor algebra of ${\rm Mat}_3(\mathbb{C})$.
Counting $\mathbb F_q$-points of orbital varieties in ad-nilpotent ideals of type $A_n$
Let $\mathfrak b_n(\mathbb F_q)$ denote the Lie algebra of upper triangular $n \times n$ matrices over $\mathbb F_q$, and let $\mathfrak u_n(\mathbb F_q)$ be the subalgebra of strictly upper triangular matrices. For every $\mathfrak b_n(\mathbb F_q)$-stable ideal $\mathfrak a \subseteq \mathfrak u_n(\mathbb F_q)$ and partition $μ$ of $n$, we give an explicit formula for the number of elements in $\mathfrak a$ of Jordan type $μ$. Up to a power of $q$, the number of points is given by the Hall scalar product of a modified Hall-Littlewood function indexed by $μ$ and a chromatic quasisymmetric function associated to $\mathfrak a$. In the special case $\mathfrak a = \mathfrak u_Λ(\mathbb F_q)$, the nilradical of the standard parabolic subalgebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb F_q)$ corresponding to a composition $Λ$ of $n$, our formula specializes to a result of Karp and Thomas: up to a polynomial in $q$, the number of elements in $\mathfrak u_Λ(\mathbb F_q)$ of Jordan type $μ$ equals the coefficient of $\mathbf x^Λ$ in the specialization of the dual Macdonald symmetric function $\mathrm Q_{μ'}(\mathbf x; q^{-1}, t)$ at $t = 0$. We give a new and shorter proof using a parabolic version of Borodin's division algorithm. We present four applications: (1) a formula for the number of points on a nilpotent Hessenberg variety; (2) a derivation of Kirillov's recurrence for counting nilpotent matrices of fixed Jordan type; (3) a formula for the number of $X \in \mathfrak u_Λ(\mathbb F_q)$ with $X^2 = 0$, yielding a new proof of the Kirillov-Melnikov-Ekhad-Zeilberger formula via two-row Macdonald polynomials; (4) a formula for the number of double cosets $\mathsf U_1 \backslash \mathsf{GL}_n(\mathbb F_q) / \mathsf U_2$, where $\mathsf U_1$ and $\mathsf U_2$ are unipotent subgroups from $\mathfrak b_n(\mathbb F_q)$-stable ideals.

A conjecture on monomial realizations and polyhedral realizations for crystal bases
Crystal bases are powerful combinatorial tools in the representation theory of quantum groups $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$ for a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras $\mathfrak{g}$. The polyhedral realizations are combinatorial descriptions of the crystal base $B(\infty)$ for Verma modules in terms of the set of integer points of a polyhedral cone, which equals the string cone when $\mathfrak{g}$ is finite dimensional simple. It is a fundamental and natural problem to find explicit forms of the polyhedral cone. The monomial realization expresses crystal bases $B(λ)$ of integrable highest weight representations as Laurent monomials with double indexed variables. In this paper, we give a conjecture between explicit forms of the polyhedral cones and monomial realizations. We prove the conjecture is true when $\mathfrak{g}$ is a classical Lie algebra, a rank $2$ Kac-Moody algebra or a classical affine Lie algebra.
Statistics for random representations of Lie algebras
In this paper we investigate how a typical, large-dimensional representation looks for a complex Lie algebra. In particular, we study the family $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$ of Lie algebras for $r \geq 2$ and derive asymptotic probability distributions for the multiplicity of small irreducible representations, as well as the largest dimension, the largest height, and the total number of irreducible representations appearing in the decomposition of a representation sampled uniformly from all representations with the same dimension. This provides a natural generalization to the similar statistical studies of integer partitions, which forms the case $r=1$ of our considerations and where one has a rich toolkit ranging from combinatorial methods to approaches utilizing the theory of modular forms. We perform our analysis by extending the statistical mechanics inspired approaches in the case of partitions to the infinite family here.

Fixed points in Gieseker spaces and blocks of Ariki-Koike algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article, we establish combinatorial links between the irreducible components of the fixed point locus of the Gieseker variety and the block theory of Ariki-Koike algebras. First, we describe the fixed point locus in terms of Nakajima quiver varieties over the McKay quiver of type A. We then reinterpret the dimension of an irreducible component as double the weight of a block. Cores of charged multipartitions have been defined by Fayers and further developed by Jacon and Lecouvey. In addition, we give a new way to compute the multicharge associated with the core of a charged multipartition. Finally, we also explain how the notion of core blocks, defined by Fayers, is interpreted on the geometric side using the deep connection between quiver varieties and affine Lie algebras.

A proof of the Naito--Sagaki conjecture via the branching rule for $\imath$quantum groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Naito--Sagaki conjecture asserts that the branching rule for the restriction of finite-dimensional, irreducible polynomial representations of $GL_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ to $Sp_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ amounts to the enumeration of certain ``rational paths'' satisfying specific conditions. This conjecture can be thought of as a non-Levi type analog of the Levi type branching rule, stated in terms of the path model due to Littelmann, and was proved combinatorially in 2018 by Schumann--Torres. In this paper, we give a new proof of the Naito--Sagaki conjecture independently of Schumann--Torres, using the branching rule based on the crystal basis theory for $\imath$quantum groups of type $\mathrm{AII}_{2n-1}$. Here, note that $\imath$quantum groups are certain coideal subalgebras of a quantized universal enveloping algebra obtained by $q$-deforming symmetric pairs, and also regarded as a generalization of quantized universal enveloping algebras; these were defined by Letzter in 1999, and since then their representation theory has become an active area of research. The main ingredients of our approach are certain combinatorial operations, such as promotion operators and Kashiwara operators, which are well-suited to the representation theory of complex semisimple Lie algebras.
A recursion formula for Branching from $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ to $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ subalgebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any representation of a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, one problem of branching rules to $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-subalgebra is to determine the multiplicity of each irreducible component. In this paper, we derive a recursion formula of such multiplicities by restricting a certain tensor representation in two ways, in which the Pieri's rule is involved. We also investigate branching rules for fundamental representations as they are initial conditions of the recursion formula.

Denominator identity for the affine Lie superalgebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{spo}}(2m,2m+1)$ and indefinite theta functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1994, Kac and Wakimoto found the denominator identity for classical affine Lie superalgebras, generalizing that for affine Lie algebras. As an application, they obtained power series identities for some powers of $\triangle(q)$, where $\triangle(q)$ is the generating function of triangular numbers. In this article, we give a different proof of one of their identities. The main step is to prove that a certain indefinite theta function involving spherical polynomials is a modular form. We use the technique recently developed by Roehrig and Zwegers.

On the Boson-Fermion Correspondence for Factorial Schur Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an algebraic (non-analytic) proof of the deformed boson-fermion Fock space construction of Molev's double supersymmetric Schur functions, among other results, from our previous paper. In other words, we make no assumptions on the variables and parameters. By specializing to a finite number of variables and shifting parameters, we recover the factorial Schur functions. Furthermore, we realize the bosonic construction through a representation of a completion of the infinite rank general linear Lie algebra.

Four bases for the Onsager Lie algebra related by a $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ action
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Onsager Lie algebra $O$ is an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra defined by generators $A$, $B$ and relations $[A, [A, [A, B]]] = 4[A, B]$ and $[B, [B, [B, A]]] = 4[B, A]$. Using an embedding of $O$ into the tetrahedron Lie algebra $\boxtimes$, we obtain four direct sum decompositions of the vector space $O$, each consisting of three summands. As we will show, there is a natural action of $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ on these decompositions. For each decomposition, we provide a basis for each summand. Moreover, we describe the Lie bracket action on these bases and show how they are recursively constructed from the generators $A$, $B$ of $O$. Finally, we discuss the action of $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ on these bases and determine some transition matrices among the bases.

Auslander regular algebras and Coxeter matrices
We show that Iyama's grade bijection for Auslander-Gorenstein algebras coincides with the bijection introduced by Auslander-Reiten. This result uses a new characterisation of Auslander-Gorenstein algebras. Furthermore, we show that the grade bijection of an Auslander regular algebra coincides with the permutation matrix P in the Bruhat factorisation of the Coxeter matrix. This gives a new, purely linear algebraic interpretation of the grade bijection and allows us to calculate it in a much quicker way than was previously known. We give several applications of our main results. First, we show that the permanent of the Coxeter matrix of an Auslander regular algebra is either 1 or -1. Second, we obtain a new combinatorial characterisation of distributive lattices among the class of finite lattices. Explicitly, a lattice is distributive if and only if its Coxeter matrix can be written as PU where P is a permutation matrix and U is an upper triangular matrix. Other applications include new homological results about modules in blocks of category $\mathcal{O}$ of semisimple Lie algebras.

Conjugation, loop and closure invariants of the iterated-integrals signature
Given a feature set for the shape of a closed loop, it is natural to ask which features in that set do not change when the starting point of the path is moved. For example, in two dimensions, the area enclosed by the path does not depend on the starting point. In the present article, we characterize such loop invariants among all those features known as interated integrals of a given path. Furthermore, we relate these to conjugation invariants, which are a canonical object of study when treating (tree reduced) paths as a group with multiplication given by the concatenation. Finally, closure invariants are a third class in this context which is of particular relevance when studying piecewise linear trajectories, e.g. given by linear interpolation of time series. Keywords: invariant features; concatenation of paths; combinatorial necklaces; shuffle algebra; free Lie algebra; signed area; signed volume; tree-like equivalence.
The support of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is an order ideal in the weak Bruhat order
For integral weights $λ$ and $μ$ of a classical simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, Kostant's weight multiplicity formula gives the multiplicity of the weight $μ$ in the irreducible representation with highest weight $λ$, which we denote by $m(λ,μ)$. Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over the Weyl group of the Lie algebra whose terms are determined via a vector partition function. The Weyl alternation set $\mathcal{A}(λ,μ)$ is the set of elements of the Weyl group that contribute nontrivially to the multiplicity $m(λ,μ)$. In this article, we prove that Weyl alternation sets are order ideals in the weak Bruhat order of the corresponding Weyl group. Specializing to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$, we give a complete characterization of the Weyl alternation sets $\mathcal{A}(\tildeα,μ)$, where $\tildeα$ is the highest root and $μ$ is a negative root, answering a question of Harry posed in 2024. We also provide some enumerative results that pave the way for our future work, where we aim to prove Harry's conjecture that the $q$-analog of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is $m_q(\tildeα,μ)=q^{r+j-i+1}+q^{r+j-i}-q^{j-i+1}$ when $μ=-(α_i+α_{i+1}+\cdots+α_{j})$ is a negative root of $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$.

Gelfand-Tsetlin Crystals of Kostant-Kumar modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give Gelfand-Tsetlin crystals for the Kostant-Kumar modules for the finite simple Lie algebra of type A. Kostant-Kumar modules are cyclic submodules of the tensor product of two irreducible highest weight modules of a symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras. In this case (type A), we also provide a polytopal model for Kostant-Kumar modules in terms of BiKogan faces.
Generalised nice sets

A new combinatorial object, called generalised nice set, is classified up to collineations of the Fano plane. This classification is necessary to find the graded contractions of all the exceptional complex Lie algebras of dimension at least 52, endowed with $\mathbb Z_2^3$-gradings coming from the octonions. Our classification is of purely combinatorial nature.
