A proof of the $m$-Symmetric Macdonald positivity at $t=1$
We prove, in the case $t=1$, the extension to the $m$-symmetric world of the original Macdonald positivity conjecture. This is achieved by giving a combinatorial interpretation of the Kostka coefficients $K_{ΩΛ}(q,1)$ in terms of standard fillings of the diagram associated to the $m$-partition $Ω$. This interpretation generalizes the one in the usual Macdonald case, which is given by a major index statistic on standard tableaux.

Fast computation of Ehrhart polynomials of Gelfand--Tsetlin polytopes via Macdonald reciprocity
We describe an efficient method for computing the Ehrhart polynomial of Gelfand--Tsetlin polytopes arising from Kostka coefficients. The key idea is to exploit Ehrhart--Macdonald reciprocity: evaluating the Ehrhart polynomial at negative integers reduces to counting \emph{strict} Gelfand--Tsetlin patterns, which are often zero or very small for low dilations. Combined with an adaptive strategy that chooses the cheapest evaluation point (positive or negative) at each step, this yields substantial practical speedups compared to general-purpose polytope software. We benchmark against $\mathtt{OSCAR}$/$\mathtt{polymake}$, and illustrate the broader applicability of the method through order polytopes and permutation posets. The implementation is available in the Rust \texttt{kostka} package, with related optimizations also incorporated in the new \texttt{lrcalc-rs} replacement for \texttt{lrcalc}.

Counting 3-way contingency tables via quiver semi-invariants
Let $\mathbf{T}_{\mathbf{a},\mathbf{b}}$ be the number of $3$-way contingency tables of size $m \times n \times p$ with two of its three plane-sum margins fixed by $\mathbf{a}=(a_1, \ldots, a_m) \in \mathbb{N}^m$ and $\mathbf{b}=(b_1, \ldots, b_n) \in \mathbb{N}^n$. When $p=1$, this is the number of $m \times n$ non-negative integer matrices whose row and column sums are fixed by $\mathbf{a}$ and $\mathbf{b}$. In this paper, we study the numbers $\mathbf{T}_{\mathbf{a},\mathbf{b}}$ through the lens of quiver invariant theory. Let $\mathcal{Q}^{p}_{m,n}$ be the $p$-complete bipartite quiver with $m$ source vertices, $n$ sink vertices, and $p$ arrows from each source to each sink. Let $\mathbf{1}$ denote the dimension vector of $\mathcal{Q}^{p}_{m,n}$ that takes value $1$ at every vertex of $\mathcal{Q}^{p}_{m,n}$, and let $θ_{\mathbf{a}, \mathbf{b}}$ denote the integral weight that assigns $a_i$ to the $i^{th}$ source vertex and $-b_j$ to the $j^{th}$ sink vertex of $\mathcal{Q}^{p}_{m,n}$. We begin by realizing $\mathbf{T}_{\mathbf{a},\mathbf{b}}$ as the dimension of the space of semi-invariants associated to $(\mathcal{Q}^{p}_{m,n}, \mathbf{1}, θ_{\mathbf{a}, \mathbf{b}})$. Using this connection and methods from quiver invariant theory, we show that $\mathbf{T}_{\mathbf{a},\mathbf{b}}$ is a parabolic Kostka coefficient. In the case $p=1$, this recovers the formula for the number of the $m \times n$ contingency tables with row and column sums fixed by $\mathbf{a}$ and $\mathbf{b}$, which in the classical $2$-way setting can also be obtained via the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.

Lexical tableaux and quasisymmetric functions
There is a natural bijection between standard immaculate tableaux of composition shape $α\vDash n$ and length $\ell(α) = k$ and the $ \left\{ \begin{smallmatrix} n \\ k \end{smallmatrix} \right\} $ set-partitions of $\{ 1, 2, \ldots, n \}$ into $k$ blocks, for the Stirling number $ \left\{ \begin{smallmatrix} n \\ k \end{smallmatrix} \right\} $ of the second kind. We introduce a family of tableaux that we refer to as \emph{lexical tableaux} that generalize immaculate tableaux in such a way that there is a bijection between standard lexical tableaux of shape $α\vDash n$ and length $\ell(α) = k$ and the $ \left[ \begin{smallmatrix} n \\ k \end{smallmatrix} \right] $ permutations on $\{ 1, 2, \ldots, n \}$ with $k$ disjoint cycles. In addition to the entries in the first column strictly increasing, the defining characteristic of lexical tableaux is that the word $w$ formed by the consecutive labels in any row is the lexicographically smallest out of all cyclic permutations of $w$. This includes weakly increasing words, and thus, lexical tableaux provide a natural generalization of immaculate tableaux. Extending this generalization, we introduce a pair of dual bases of the Hopf algebras $\textsf{QSym}$ and $\textsf{NSym}$ defined in terms of lexical tableaux. We present two expansions of these bases, involving the monomial and fundamental bases (or, dually, the ribbon and complete homogeneous bases), using Kostka coefficient analogues and coefficients derived from standard lexical tableaux.

Tesler identities for wreath Macdonald polynomials
We give an explicit formula for an operator that sends a wreath Macdonald polynomial to the delta function at a character associated to its partition. This allows us to prove many new results for wreath Macdonald polynomials, especially pertaining to reciprocity: Macdonald--Koornwinder duality, evaluation formulas, etc. Additionally, we initiate the study of wreath interpolation Macdonald polynomials, derive a plethystic formula for wreath $(q,t)$-Kostka coefficients, and present series solutions to the bispectral problem involving wreath Macdonald operators. Our approach is to use the eigenoperators for wreath Macdonald polynomials that have been produced from quantum toroidal and shuffle algebras.

Cylindric Schur functions
We generalize several classical results about Schur functions to the family of cylindric Schur functions. First, we give a combinatorial proof of a Murnaghan--Nakayama formula for expanding cylindric Schur functions in the power-sum basis. We also explore some cases where this formula is cancellation-free. The second result is polynomiality of Kostka coefficients associated with stretched row-flagged skew Schur functions. This implies polynomiality of stretched cylindric Kostka coefficients. This generalizes a result by E. Rassart from 2004. Finally, we also show the saturation property for the row-flagged skew Kostka coefficients which also implies the saturation property for cylindric Schur functions.

On Faces and Hilbert Bases of Kostka Cones
Published • View Publication • BIB
Kostka coefficients appear in the representation theory of the general linear group and enumerate semistandard Young tableaux of fixed shape and content. The $r$-Kostka cone is the real polyhedral cone generated by pairs of partitions with at most $r$ parts, written as non-increasing $r$-tuples, such that the corresponding Kostka coefficient is nonzero. We provide several results showing that its faces have interesting structural and enumerative properties. We show that the $d$-faces of the $r$-Kostka cone can be determined from those of the $(3d+3)$-Kostka cone, allowing us to characterize its $2$-faces and enumerate its $d$-faces for $d \leq 4$. We provide tight asymptotics for the number of $d$-faces for arbitrary $d$ and determine the maximum number of extremal rays contained in a $d$-face for $d < r$. We then make progress towards a generalization of the Gao-Kiers-Orelowitz-Yong Width Bound on initial entries of partitions $(λ,μ)$ appearing in the Hilbert basis of the $λ_1$-Kostka cone. We show that at least $93.7\%$ of integer pairs $λ_1 \geq μ_1 > 0$ appear as the initial entries of partitions $(λ,μ)$ comprising a Hilbert basis element of the $r$-Kostka cone for every $r > λ_1$. We conclude with a conjecture about a curious $h$-vector phenomenon.

On Schützenberger modules of the cactus group
Published • View Publication • BIB
The cactus group acts on the set of standard Young tableau of a given shape by (partial) Schützenberger involutions. It is natural to extend this action to the corresponding Specht module by identifying standard Young tableau with the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis. We term these representations of the cactus group "Schützenberger modules", denoted $S^λ_{\mathsf{Sch}}$, and in this paper we investigate their decomposition into irreducible components. We prove that when $λ$ is a hook shape, the cactus group action on $S^λ_{\mathsf{Sch}}$ factors through $S_{n-1}$ and the resulting multiplicities are given by Kostka coefficients. Our proof relies on results of Berenstein and Kirillov and Chmutov, Glick, and Pylyavskyy.
The Kostka semigroup and its Hilbert basis
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications, 4:2 (2024) Article #S2R9 • View Publication • BIB
The Kostka semigroup consists of pairs of partitions with at most r parts that have positive Kostka coefficient. For this semigroup, Hilbert basis membership is an NP-complete problem. We introduce KGR graphs and conservative subtrees, through the Gale-Ryser theorem on contingency tables, as a criterion for membership. In our main application, we show that if a partition pair is in the Hilbert basis then the partitions are at most r wide. We also classify the extremal rays of the associated polyhedral cone; these rays correspond to a (strict) subset of the Hilbert basis. In an appendix, the second and third authors show that a natural extension of our main result on the Kostka semigroup cannot be extended to the Littlewood-Richardson semigroup. This furthermore gives a counterexample to a recent speculation of P. Belkale concerning the semigroup controlling nonvanishing conformal blocks.

Multi-Macdonald polynomials
We introduce Macdonald polynomials indexed by $n$-tuples of partitions and characterized by certain orthogonality and triangularity relations. We prove that they can be explicitly given as products of ordinary Macdonald polynomials depending on special alphabets. With this factorization in hand, we establish their most basic properties, such as explicit formulas for their norm-squared, evaluation and reproducing kernel. Moreover, we show that the $q,t$-Kostka coefficients associated to the multi-Macdonald polynomials are positive and correspond to $q,t$-analogs of the dimensions of the irreducible representations of $C_n \sim S_d$, the wreath product of the cyclic group $C_n$ with the symmetric group.
Macdonald polynomials in superspace as eigenfunctions of commuting operators
Published in Journal of Combinatorics 3 (2012), pages 495-561 • View Publication • BIB
A generalization of the Macdonald polynomials depending upon both commuting and anticommuting variables has been introduced recently. The construction relies on certain orthogonality and triangularity relations. Although many superpolynomials were constructed as solutions of highly over-determined system, the existence issue was left open. This is resolved here: we demonstrate that the underlying construction has a (unique) solution. The proof uses, as a starting point, the definition of the Macdonald superpolynomials in terms of the Macdonald non-symmetric polynomials via a non-standard (anti)symmetrization and a suitable dressing by anticommuting monomials. This relationship naturally suggests the form of two family of commuting operators that have the defined superpolynomials as their common eigenfunctions. These eigenfunctions are then shown to be triangular and orthogonal. Up to a normalization, these two conditions uniquely characterize these superpolynomials. Moreover, the Macdonald superpolynomials are found to be orthogonal with respect to a second (constant-term-type) scalar product and its norm is evaluated. The latter is shown to match (up to a q-power) the conjectured norm with respect to the original scalar product. Finally, we recall the super-version of the Macdonald positivity conjecture and present two new conjectures which both provide a remarkable relationship between the new (q,t)-Kostka coefficients and the usual ones.

Degrees of stretched Kostka coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a partition l and a composition b, the stretched Kostka coefficient K_{l, b}(n) is the map sending each positive integer n to the Kostka coefficient indexed by nl and nb. Kirillov and Reshetikhin (1986) have shown that stretched Kostka coefficients are polynomial functions of n. King, Tollu, and Toumazet have conjectured that these polynomials always have nonnegative coefficients (2004), and they have given a conjectural expression for their degrees (2006). We prove the values conjectured by King, Tollu, and Toumazet for the degrees of stretched Kostka coefficients. Our proof depends upon the polyhedral geometry of Gelfand--Tsetlin polytopes and uses tilings of GT-patterns, a combinatorial structure introduced in De Loera & McAllister (2004).

Hall-Littlewood vertex operators and generalized Kostka polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
A family of vertex operators that generalizes those given by Jing for the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions is presented. These operators produce symmetric functions related to the Poincare polynomials referred to as generalized Kostka polynomials in the same way that Jing's operator produces symmetric functions related to Kostka-Foulkes polynomials. These operators are then used to derive commutation relations and new relations involving the generalized Kostka coefficients. Such relations may be interpreted as identities in the (GL(n) x C^*)-equivariant K-theory of the nullcone.

Positivity for special cases of $(q,t)$-Kostka coefficients and standard tableaux statistics

We present two symmetric function operators $H_3^{qt}$ and $H_4^{qt}$ that have the property $H_{3}^{qt} H_{(2^a1^b)}[X;q,t] = H_{(32^a1^b)}[X;q,t]$ and $H_4^{qt} H_{(2^a1^b)}[X;q,t] = H_{(42^a1^b)}[X;q,t]$. These operators are generalizations of the analogous operator $H_2^{qt}$ and also have expressions in terms of Hall-Littlewood vertex operators. We also discuss statistics, $a_μ(T)$ and $b_μ(T)$, on standard tableaux such that the $q,t$ Kostka polynomials are given by the sum over standard tableaux of shape $\la$, $K_{\laμ}(q,t) = \sum_T t^{a_μ(T)} q^{b_μ(T)}$ for the case when when $μ$ is two columns or of the form $(32^a1^b)$ or $(42^a1^b)$. This provides proof of the positivity of the $(q,t)$-Kostka coefficients in the previously unknown cases of $K_{\la (32^a1^b)}(q,t)$ and $K_{\la (42^a1^b)}(q,t)$. The vertex operator formulas are used to give formulas for generating functions for classes of standard tableaux that generalize the case when $μ$ is two columns.

Tableaux statistics for two part Macdonald polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Macdonald polynomials expanded in terms of a modified Schur function basis have coefficients called the $q,t$-Kostka polynomials. We define operators to build standard tableaux and show that they are equivalent to creation operators that recursively build the Macdonald polynomials indexed by two part partitions. We uncover a new basis for these particular Macdonald polynomials and in doing so are able to give an explicit description of their associated $q,t$-Kostka coefficients by assigning a statistic in $q$ and $t$ to each standard tableau.

Science Fiction and Macdonald's Polynomials

This work studies the remarkable relationships that hold among certain m-tuples of the Garsia-Haiman modules $ {\bf M}_μ$ and corresponding elements of the Macdonald basis. We recall that ${\bf M}_μ$ is defined for a partition $μ\part n$, as the linear span of derivatives of a certain bihomogeneous polynomial $Δ_ μ(x,y)$ in the variables $x_1,x_2,..., x_n, y_1,y_2,..., y_n$. It has been conjectured by Garsia and Haiman that ${\bf M}_μ$ has $n!$ dimensions and that its bigraded Frobenius characteristic is given by the symmetric polynomial ${\widetilde{H}}_μ(x;q,t)=\sum_{λ\part n} S_λ(X) {\widetilde{K}}_{λμ}(q,t)$ where the ${\widetilde{K}}_{λμ}(q,t)$ are related to the Macdonald $q,t$-Kostka coefficients $ K_{λμ}(q,t)$ by the identity ${\widetilde{K}}_{λμ}(q,t)=K_{λμ}(q,1/t)t^{n(μ)}$ with $n(μ)$ the x-degree of $Δ_ μ(x;y)$. Computer data has suggested that as $ν$ varies among the immediate predecessors of a partition $μ$, the spaces ${\bf M}_ν$ behave like a boolean lattice. We formulate a number of remarkable conjectures about the Macdonald polynomials. In particular we obtain a representation theoretical interpretation for some of the symmetries that can be found in the computed tables of $q,t$-Kostka coefficients.
