The KOH terms and classes of unimodal N-modular diagrams
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 118 (2011), no. 8, 2498-2510 • View Publication • BIB
We show how certain suitably modified N-modular diagrams of integer partitions provide a nice combinatorial interpretation for the general term of Zeilberger's KOH identity. This identity is the reformulation of O'Hara's famous proof of the unimodality of the Gaussian polynomial as a combinatorial identity. In particular, we determine, using different bijections, two main natural classes of modular diagrams of partitions with bounded parts and length, having the KOH terms as their generating functions. One of our results greatly extends recent theorems of J. Quinn et al., which presented striking applications to quantum physics.

A Unified Combinatorial Approach to Several Poincare Series Identities
Mendes recently conjectured an identity simplifying the Poincaré series of the space of equivariant polynomial maps from $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ to a subrepresentation of $Sym^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. We show how to prove this identity using a fairly simple integer partition bijection. First, we give a bijective proof of a similar, well-known identity from representation theory. We then show that this bijection can be generalized to prove other Poincaré series identities, including a version of the identity conjectured by Mendes as well as refinements of it.

Bachet's Problem: as few weights to weigh them all
A problem that enjoys an enduring popularity asks: "what is the least number of pound weights that can be used on a scale pan to weigh any integral number of pounds from 1 to 40 inclusive, if the weights can be placed in either of the scale pans ?" W.W. Rouse Ball attributes the first recording of this problem to Bachet in the early 17th century, calling it "Bachet's Weights Problem". However, Bachet's problem stretches all the way back to Fibonacci in 1202, making it a viable candidate for the first problem of integer partitions. Remarkably, given the age of Bachet's problem, an elegant and succinct solution to this problem when we replace 40 with any integer has only come to light in the last 15 or so years. We hope to expound on this generalization here armed only with our sharp wits and a willingness to induct. In doing so we will discover some of the joys of partitions of integers and enumerative combinatorics. This expository article, while of interest to researchers in combinatorics, integer partitions and the history of mathematics, is written with an impressionable undergraduate audience in mind.

On the growth of restricted integer partition functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the rate of growth of $p(n,S,M)$, the number of partitions of $n$ whose parts all belong to $S$ and whose multiplicities all belong to $M$, where $S$ (resp. $M$) are given infinite sets of positive (resp. nonnegative) integers. We show that if $M$ is all nonnegative integers then $p(n,S,M)$ cannot be of only polynomial growth, and that no sharper statement can be made. We ask: if $p(n,S,M)>0$ for all large enough $n$, can $p(n,S,M)$ be of polynomial growth in $n$?

The Möbius function of partitions with restricted block size
Published in Advances in Applied Math. 39 (2007), 283--292 • View Publication • BIB
We study filters in the partition lattice formed by restricting to partitions by type. The Möbius function is determined in terms of the easier-to-compute descent set statistics on permutations and the Möbius function of filters in the lattice of integer compositions. When the underlying integer partition is a knapsack partition, the Möbius function on integer compositions is determined by a topological argument. In this proof the permutahedron makes a cameo appearance.

Cycle indices for finite orthogonal groups of even characteristic
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop cycle index generating functions for orthogonal groups in even characteristic, and give some enumerative applications. A key step is the determination of the values of the complex linear-Weil characters of the finite symplectic group, and their inductions to the general linear group, at unipotent elements. We also define and study several natural probability measures on integer partitions.

Multiple analogues of binomial coefficients and related families of special numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct multiple $qt$-binomial coefficients and related multiple analogues of several celebrated families of special numbers in this paper. These multidimensional generalizations include the first and the second kind of $qt$-Stirling numbers, $qt$-Bell numbers, $qt$-Bernoulli numbers, $qt$-Catalan numbers and the $qt$--Fibonacci numbers. In the course of developing main properties of these extensions, we prove results that are significant in their own rights such as certain probability measures on the set of integer partitions.

The number of nonzero binomial coefficients modulo p^alpha
Published in Journal of Combinatorics and Number Theory 3 (2011) 15-25 • Search Publication
In 1947 Fine obtained an expression for the number of binomial coefficients on row n of Pascal's triangle that are nonzero modulo p. In this paper we use Kummer's theorem to generalize Fine's theorem to prime powers, expressing the number of nonzero binomial coefficients modulo p^alpha as a sum over certain integer partitions. For fixed alpha, this expression can be rewritten to show explicit dependence on the number of occurrences of each subword in the base-p representation of n.

Combinatorial interpretations of binomial coefficient analogues related to Lucas sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let s and t be variables. Define polynomials {n} in s, t by {0}=0, {1}=1, and {n}=s{n-1}+t{n-2} for n >= 2. If s, t are integers then the corresponding sequence of integers is called a Lucas sequence. Define an analogue of the binomial coefficients by C{n,k}={n}!/({k}!{n-k}!) where {n}!={1}{2}...{n}. It is easy to see that C{n,k} is a polynomial in s and t. The purpose of this note is to give two combinatorial interpretations for this polynomial in terms of statistics on integer partitions inside a k by n-k rectangle. When s=t=1 we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the fibonomial coefficients which are simpler than any that have previously appeared in the literature.

Generating All Partitions: A Comparison Of Two Encodings
Integer partitions may be encoded as either ascending or descending compositions for the purposes of systematic generation. Many algorithms exist to generate all descending compositions, yet none have previously been published to generate all ascending compositions. We develop three new algorithms to generate all ascending compositions and compare these with descending composition generators from the literature. We analyse the new algorithms and provide new and more precise analyses for the descending composition generators. In each case, the ascending composition generation algorithm is substantially more efficient than its descending composition counterpart. We develop a new formula for the partition function p(n) as part of our analysis of the lexicographic succession rule for ascending compositions.

A product of integer partitions
I present a bijection on integer partitions that leads to recursive expressions, closed formulae and generating functions for the cardinality of certain sets of partitions of a positive integer $n$. The bijection leads also to a product on partitions that is associative with a natural grading thus defining a free associative algebra on the set of integer partitions. As an outcome of the computations, certain sets of integers appear that I call difference sets and the product of the integers in a difference set is an invariant for a family of sets of partitions. The main combinatorial objects used in these constructions are the central hooks of the Ferrers diagrams of partitions.

A $q$-analogue of the FKG inequality and some applications
Let $L$ be a finite distributive lattice and $μ: L \to {\mathbb R}^{+}$ a log-supermodular function. For functions $k: L \to {\mathbb R}^{+}$ let $$E_μ (k; q) \defeq \sum_{x\in L} k(x) μ(x) q^{{\mathrm rank}(x)} \in {\mathbb R}^{+}[q].$$ We prove for any pair $g,h: L\to {\mathbb R}^{+}$ of monotonely increasing functions, that $$E_μ (g; q)\cdot E_μ (h; q) \ll E_μ (1; q)\cdot E_μ (gh; q), $$ where ``$ \ll $'' denotes coefficientwise inequality of real polynomials. The FKG inequality of Fortuin, Kasteleyn and Ginibre (1971) is the real number inequality obtained by specializing to $q=1$. The polynomial FKG inequality has applications to $f$-vectors of joins and intersections of simplicial complexes, to Betti numbers of intersections of certain Schubert varieties, and to the following kind of correlation inequality for power series weighted by Young tableaux. Let $Y$ be the set of all integer partitions. Given functions $k, μ: Y \rarr \R^+$, and parameters $0\le s\le t$, define the formal power series $$F_μ(k ; z) \defeq \sum_{\la\in Y} k(\la) μ(\la) (f_{\la})^t \frac{z^{|\la|}}{(|\la| !)^s} \in \R^+ [[z]], $$ %\sum_{\la\in Y} k(\la) μ(\la) (f_{\la})^t \frac{z^{|\la|}}{|\la| !} \in \R^+ [[z]],$$ where $f_{\la}$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $\la$. Assume that $μ: Y\rarr \R^+$ is log-supermodular, and that $g, h: Y \rarr \R^+$ are monotonely increasing with respect to containment order of partition shapes. Then $$F_μ(g;z) \cdot F_μ(h;z) \ll F_μ(1;z) \cdot F_μ(gh;z). $$

Ergodicity of multiplicative statistics
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a subfamily of multiplicative measures on integer partitions we give conditions for properly rescaled associated Young diagrams to converge in probability to a certain deterministic curve named the limit shape of partitions. We provide explicit formulas for the scaling function and the limit shape covering some known and some new examples.

A sharp bound for the reconstruction of partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Answering a question of Cameron, Pretzel and Siemons proved that every integer partition of $n\ge 2(k+3)(k+1)$ can be reconstructed from its set of $k$-deletions. We describe a new reconstruction algorithm that lowers this bound to $n\ge k^2+2k$ and present examples showing that this bound is best possible.

Symbolic computation of moments of sampling distributions
Published in Computational Statistics and Data Analysis (2008) • View Publication • BIB
By means of the notion of umbrae indexed by multisets, a general method to express estimators and their products in terms of power sums is derived. A connection between the notion of multiset and integer partition leads immediately to a way to speed up the procedures. Comparisons of computational times with known procedures show how this approach turns out to be more efficient in eliminating much unnecessary computation.

A property of dominance of partitions
Given an integer partition $\la=(\la_1, ..., \la_\ell)$ and an integer k, denote by $\la^{(k)}$ the sequence of length $\ell$ obtained by reordering the values $|\la_i-k|$ in non-increasing order. If $\la$ dominates $μ$ and has the same weight, then $\la^{(k)}$ dominates $μ^{(k)}$.

The defining ideals of conjugacy classes of nilpotent matrices and a conjecture of Weyman
Published • View Publication • BIB
Tanisaki introduced generating sets for the defining ideals of the schematic intersections of the closure of conjugacy classes of nilpotent matrices with the set of diagonal matrices. These ideals are naturally labeled by integer partitions. Given such a partition $λ$, we define several methods to produce a reduced generating set for the associated ideal $I_λ$. For particular shapes we find nice generating sets. By comparing our sets with some generating sets of $I_λ$ arising from a work of Weyman, we find a counterexample to a related conjecture of Weyman.

Set partition statistics and q-Fibonacci numbers
We consider the set partition statistics ls and rb introduced by Wachs and White and investigate their distribution over set partitions avoiding certain patterns. In particular, we consider those set partitions avoiding the pattern 13/2, $Π_n(13/2)$, and those avoiding both 13/2 and 123, $Π_n(13/2,123)$. We show that the distribution over $Π_n(13/2)$ enumerates certain integer partitions, and the distribution over $Π_n(13/2,123)$ gives q-Fibonacci numbers. These q-Fibonacci numbers are closely related to q-Fibonacci numbers studied by Carlitz and by Cigler. We provide combinatorial proofs that these q-Fibonacci numbers satisfy q-analogues of many Fibonacci identities. Finally, we indicate how p,q-Fibonacci numbers arising from the bistatistic (ls, rb) give rise to p,q-analogues of identities.
Integer partitions and exclusion statistics: Limit shapes and the largest part of Young diagrams
Published in J. Stat. Mech. (2007) P10001 • View Publication • BIB
We compute the limit shapes of the Young diagrams of the minimal difference $p$ partitions and provide a simple physical interpretation for the limit shapes. We also calculate the asymptotic distribution of the largest part of the Young diagram and show that the scaled distribution has a Gumbel form for all $p$. This Gumbel statistics for the largest part remains unchanged even for general partitions of the form $E=\sum_i n_i i^{1/ν}$ with $ν>0$ where $n_i$ is the number of times the part $i$ appears.
Integer Partitions and Exclusion Statistics
Published in J. Phys. A: Math.Theor. 40, 11255 (2007) • View Publication • BIB
We provide a combinatorial description of exclusion statistics in terms of minimal difference $p$ partitions. We compute the probability distribution of the number of parts in a random minimal $p$ partition. It is shown that the bosonic point $ p=0$ is a repulsive fixed point for which the limiting distribution has a Gumbel form. For all positive $p$ the distribution is shown to be Gaussian.
