Weighted words at degree two, I: Bressoud's algorithm as an energy transfer

In a recent paper, we generalized a partition identity stated by Siladić in his study of the level one standard module of type $A_2^{(2)}$. The proof used weighted words with an arbitrary number of primary colors and all the secondary colors obtained from these primary colors, and a brand new variant of the bijection of Bressoud for Schur's partition identity. In this paper, the first of two, we analyze this variant of Bressoud's algorithm in the framework of statistical mechanics, where an integer partition is viewed as an amount of energy shared, according to certain properties, between several states. This viewpoint allows us to generalize the previous result by considering a more general family of minimal difference conditions. For example, we generalize the Siladić identity to overpartitions. In the second paper, we connect this result to the Glaisher theorem and give some applications to level one perfect crystals.

Integer compositions, integer partitions, Fibonacci numbers, and generalizations of these have recently been shown to be interconnected via two-toned tilings of horizontal grids. In this article, we present refinements of two-toned tilings, describe functions which analyze them, and apply these to generalizations of integer compositions and partitions which interpolate between the two.
Limit Shapes for Unimodal Sequences

We prove asymptotic 0-1 Laws satisfied by diagrams of unimodal sequences of positive integers. These diagrams consist of columns of squares in the plane, and the upper boundary is called the shape. For various types, we show that, as the number of squares tends to infinity, $100\%$ of shapes are near a certain curve---that is, there is a single {\it limit shape}. Similar phenomena have been well-studied for integer partitions, so the present work is a natural extension. One notable corollary is a transferred limit shape for overpartitions.
On Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula for $\mathfrak{sl}_{4}(\mathbb{C})$

The $q$-analog of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over a finite group, known as the Weyl group, whose terms involve the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function. This formula, when evaluated at $q=1$, gives the multiplicity of a weight in a highest weight representation of a simple Lie algebra. In this paper, we consider the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb{C})$ and give closed formulas for the $q$-analog of Kostant's weight multiplicity. This formula depends on the following two sets of results. First, we present closed formulas for the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function by counting restricted colored integer partitions. These formulas, when evaluated at $q=1$, recover results of De Loera and Sturmfels. Second, we describe and enumerate the Weyl alternation sets, which consist of the elements of the Weyl group that contribute nontrivially to Kostant's weight multiplicity formula. From this, we introduce Weyl alternation diagrams on the root lattice of $\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb{C})$, which are associated to the Weyl alternation sets. This work answers a question posed in 2019 by Harris, Loving, Ramirez, Rennie, Rojas Kirby, Torres Davila, and Ulysse.

Let $(V,ω)$ be an orthosympectic $\mathbb Z_2$-graded vector space and let $\mathfrak g:=\mathfrak{gosp}(V,ω)$ denote the Lie superalgebra of similitudes of $(V,ω)$. When the space $\mathscr P(V)$ of superpolynomials on $V$ is \emph{not} a completely reducible $\mathfrak g$-module, we construct a natural basis $D_λ$ of Capelli operators for the algebra of $\mathfrak g$-invariant superpolynomial superdifferential operators on $V$, where the index set $\mathcal P$ is the set of integer partitions of length at most two. We compute the action of the operators $D_λ$ on maximal indecomposable components of $\mathscr P(V)$ explicitly, in terms of Knop-Sahi interpolation polynomials. Our results show that, unlike the cases where $\mathscr P(V)$ is completely reducible, the eigenvalues of a subfamily of the $D_λ$ are \emph{not} given by specializing the Knop-Sahi polynomials. Rather, the formulas for these eigenvalues involve suitably regularized forms of these polynomials. In addition, we demonstrate a close relationship between our eigenvalue formulas for this subfamily of Capelli operators and the Dougall-Ramanujan hypergeometric identity.
We also transcend our results on the eigenvalues of Capelli operators to the Deligne category $\mathsf{Rep}(O_t)$. More precisely, we define categorical Capelli operators $\{\mathbf D_{t,λ}\}_{λ\in\mathcal P}^{}$ that induce morphisms of indecomposable components of symmetric powers of $\mathsf V_t$, where $\mathsf V_t$ is the generating object of $\mathsf{Rep}(O_t)$. We obtain formulas for the eigenvalue polynomials associated to the $\left\{\mathbf D_{t,λ}\right\}_{λ\in\mathcal P}$ that are analogous to our results for the operators $\{D_λ\}_{λ\in\mathcal P}^{}$.

Two closely related discrete probability distributions are introduced. In each case the support is a set of vectors in $\mathbb{R}^n$ obtained from the partitions of the fixed positive integer $n$. These distributions arise naturally when considering equally-likely random permutations on the set of $n$ letters. For one of the distributions, the expectation vector and covariance matrix is derived. For the other distribution, conjectures for several elements of the expectation vector are provided.
Nuclear partitions and a formula for $p(n)$
Define a "nuclear partition" to be an integer partition with no part equal to one. In this study we prove a simple formula to compute the partition function $p(n)$ by counting only the nuclear partitions of $n$, a vanishingly small subset by comparison with all partitions of $n$ as $n\to \infty$. Variations on the proof yield other formulas for $p(n)$, as well as Ramanujan-like congruences and an application to parity of the partition function.
Cores and quotients of partitions through the Frobenius symbol

The Frobenius symbol was first introduced in 1900 by Frobenius as a way to encode an integer partition. In 1941, motivated by the modular representation theory of the symmetric group, Nakayama introduced the idea of a p-core partition, for p prime, using hook removals. In the following decade, Robinson, Littlewood, Staal and Farahat codified the $p$-quotient of such a partition, using variations of the star diagram. Since the 1970s, the convention has been to build up the theory of both core and quotients with the abacus construction, first introduced by G. James. In this paper we return to the earlier point of view. First we show that, for any positive integer t, the t-core and t-quotient of an integer partition can be directly obtained from its Frobenius symbol. The argument also works in the opposite direction: that is, given the Frobenius symbol of a t-core and a $t$-tuple of Frobenius symbols, one can recover the Frobenius symbol of the corresponding partition. One immediate application is the calculation of the Durfee number of the associated partition from the Frobenius symbols of the core and quotient. In 1991, J. Scopes gathered together the $p$-core partitions into families to prove that Donovan's conjecture holds for the symmetric groups at the prime p. We describe, using our methods, the action of the affine Weyl group W_p of type $A$ on Frobenius symbols, and use this to parametrize and compute the explicit number of Scopes families. In particular we enumerate both the infinite and finite Scopes families. Core partitions have also attracted recent interest in number theory. By constructing explicit and combinatorial bijections, we revisit some well-known identities originally obtained using sophisticated methods. We end with a close study of the relationship between certain hooks in the quotient and certain hooks in the associated partition.
Sequentially congruent partitions and partitions into squares

In recent work, M. Schneider and the first author studied a curious class of integer partitions called "sequentially congruent" partitions: the $m$th part is congruent to the $(m+1)$th part modulo $m$, with the smallest part congruent to zero modulo the number of parts. Let $p_{\mathcal S}(n)$ be the number of sequentially congruent partitions of $n,$ and let $p_{\square}(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ wherein all parts are squares. In this note we prove bijectively, for all $n\geq 1,$ that $p_{\mathcal S}(n) = p_{\square}(n).$ Our proof naturally extends to show other exotic classes of partitions of $n$ are in bijection with certain partitions of $n$ into $k$th powers.
Index of seaweed algebras and integer partitions

The index of a Lie algebra is an important algebraic invariant. In 2000, Vladimir Dergachev and Alexandre Kirillov defined seaweed subalgebras of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ (or $\mathfrak{sl}_n$) and provided a formula for the index of a seaweed algebra using a certain graph, so-called a meander. In a recent paper, Vincent Coll, Andrew Mayers, and Nick Mayers defined a new statistic for partitions, namely the index of a partition, which arises from seaweed Lie algebras of type A. At the end of their paper, they presented an interesting conjecture, which involves integer partitions into odd parts. Motivated by their work, in this paper, we exploit various index statistics and the index weight generating functions for partitions. In particular, we examine their conjecture by considering the generating function for partitions into odd parts. We will also reprove another result from their paper using generating functions.

Using sequences of finite length with positive integer elements and the inversion statistic on such sequences, a collection of binomial and multinomial identities are extended to their $q$-analog form via combinatorial proofs. Using the major index statistic on sequences, a connection between integer partitions with kinds and finite differences of the coefficients of generalized Galois numbers is established.
Systematic Counting of Restricted Partitions
Integer partitions are one of the most fundamental objects of combinatorics (and number theory), and so is enumerating objects avoiding patterns. In the present paper we describe two approaches for the systematic counting of classes of partitions avoiding an arbitrary set of "patterns".
On a Class of Sums with Unexpectedly High Cancellation, and its Applications
Following attempts at an analytic proof of the Pentagonal Number Theorem, we report on the discovery of a general principle leading to an unexpected cancellation of oscillating sums. After stating the motivation, and our theorem, we apply it to prove several results on the Prouhet-Tarry-Escott Problem, integer partitions, and the distribution of prime numbers. Regarding the Prouhet-Tarry-Escott problem, we show that \begin{align*} \sum_{|\ell|\leq x}(4x^2-4\ell^2)^{2r}-\sum_{|\ell|<x}(4x^2-(2\ell+1)^2)^{2r}=\text{polynomial w.r.t. } x \text{ with degree }2r-1. \end{align*} This can perhaps be proved using properties of Bernoulli polynomials, but the claim fell out of our method in a more natural and motivated way. Using this result, we solve an approximate version of the PTE Problem, and in doing so our work in the approximate case exceeds the bounds one can prove using a pigeonhole argument, which seems remarkable. Also, we prove that $$ \sum_{\ell^2 < n} (-1)^\ell p(n-\ell^2)\ \sim\ (-1)^n 2^{-3/4} n^{-1/4} \sqrt{p(n)}, $$ where $p(n)$ is the usual partition function. We get the following "Weak pentagonal number theorem", in which we can replace the partition function $p(n)$ with Chebyshev $Ψ$ function: $$ \sum_{0 < \ell < \sqrt{xT}/2} Ψ([e^{\sqrt{x - \frac{(2\ell)^2}{T}}},\ e^{\sqrt{x - \frac{(2\ell-1)^2}{T}}}])\ =Ψ(e^{\sqrt{x}})\left(\frac{1}{2} + O\left (e^{-0.196\sqrt{x}}\right)\right), $$ where $T=e^{0.786\sqrt{x}}$, where $Ψ([a,b]) := \sum_{n\in [a,b]} Λ(n)$ and $Ψ(x) = Ψ([1,x])$, where $Λ$ is the von Mangoldt function. Note that this last equation (sum over $\ell$) is stronger than one would get using a strong form of the Prime Number Theorem and also a naive use of the Riemann Hypothesis in each interval, since the widths of the intervals are smaller than $e^{\frac{1}{2} \sqrt{x}}$, making the RH estimate ``trivial".
Counting pattern-avoiding integer partitions

A partition $α$ is said to contain another partition (or pattern) $μ$ if the Ferrers board for $μ$ is attainable from $α$ under removal of rows and columns. We say $α$ avoids $μ$ if it does not contain $μ$. In this paper we count the number of partitions of $n$ avoiding a fixed pattern $μ$, in terms of generating functions and their asymptotic growth rates.
We find that the generating function for this count is rational whenever $μ$ is (rook equivalent to) a partition in which any two part sizes differ by at least two. In doing so, we find a surprising connection to metacyclic $p$-groups. We further obtain asymptotics for the number of partitions of $n$ avoiding a pattern $μ$. Using these asymptotics we conclude that the generating function for $μ$ is not algebraic whenever $μ$ is rook equivalent to a partition with distinct parts whose first two parts are positive and differ by 1.

When $λ$ is a partition, the specialized non-symmetric Macdonald polynomial $E_λ(x;q;0)$ is symmetric and related to a modified Hall--Littlewood polynomial. We show that whenever all parts of the integer partition $λ$ is a multiple of $n$, the underlying set of fillings exhibit the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) under a cyclic shift of the columns. The corresponding CSP polynomial is given by $E_λ(x;q;0)$. In addition, we prove a refined cyclic sieving phenomenon where the content of the fillings is fixed. This refinement is closely related to an earlier result by B.~Rhoades.
We also introduce a skew version of $E_λ(x;q;0)$. We show that these are symmetric and Schur-positive via a variant of the Robinson--Schenstedt--Knuth correspondence and we also describe crystal raising- and lowering operators for the underlying fillings. Moreover, we show that the skew specialized non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials are in some cases vertical-strip LLT polynomials. As a consequence, we get a combinatorial Schur expansion of a new family of LLT polynomials.

We examine "partition zeta functions" analogous to the Riemann zeta function but summed over subsets of integer partitions. We prove an explicit formula for a family of partition zeta functions already shown to have nice properties -- those summed over partitions of fixed length -- which yields complete information about analytic continuation, poles and trivial roots of the zeta functions in the family. Then we present a combinatorial proof of the explicit formula, which shows it to be a zeta function analog of MacMahon's partial fraction decomposition of the generating function for partitions of fixed length.
Partition of a Subset into Two Directed Cycles with Partial Degrees
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a directed graph of order $n\geq 6$. Let $W$ be a subset of $V$ with $|W|\geq 6$. Suppose that every vertex of $W$ has degree at least $(3n-3)/2$ in $D$. Then for any integer partition $|W|=n_1+n_2$ with $n_1\geq 3$ and $n_2\geq 3$, $D$ contains two disjoint directed cycles $C_1$ and $C_2$ such that $|V(C_1)\cap W|=n_1$ and $|V(C_2)\cap W|=n_2$. We conjecture that for any integer partition $|W|=n_1+n_2+\cdots +n_k$ with $k\geq 3$ and $n_i\geq 3(1\leq i\leq k)$, $D$ contains $k$ disjoint directed cycles $C_1,C_2,\ldots , C_k$ such that $|V(C_i)\cap W|=n_i$ for all $1\leq i\leq k$. The degree condition is sharp in general.
A Constructive Proof of Jacobi's Identity for the Sum of Two Squares
We present a constructive proof of Jacobi's identity for the sum of two squares. We present a combinatorial proof of the Jacobi Triple Product and combine with a proof of Hirschhorn to define an algorithm. The input is a factorization $n=dN$ with $d \equiv1\mod 4$ plus two bits of data, and whose output is either another factorization $n=d'N'$ and $d' \equiv3\mod 4$ with two more bits of data, or a pair of integers whose squares sum to $n$. We phrase this algorithm in terms of integer partitions and matchings on an infinite graph.

Let $p(n)$ be the number of all integer partitions of the positive integer $n$ and let $λ$ be a partition, selected uniformly at random from among all such $p(n)$ partitions. It is known that each partition $λ$ has a unique graphical representation, composed by $n$ non-overlapping cells in the plane called Young diagram. As a second step of our sampling experiment, we select a cell $c$ uniformly at random from among all $n$ cells of the Young diagram of the partition $λ$. For large $n$, we study the asymptotic behavior of the hook length $Z_n=Z_n(λ,c)$ of the cell $c$ of a random partituion $λ$. This two-step sampling procedure suggests a product probability measure, which assigns the probability $1/np(n)$ to each pair $(λ,c)$. With respect to this probability measure, we show that the random variable $πZ_n/\sqrt{6n}$ converges weakly, as $n\to\infty$, to a random variable whose probability density function equals $6y/π^2 (e^y-1)$ if $0<y<\infty$, and zero elsewhere.

Young's lattice is a partial order on integer partitions whose saturated chains correspond to standard Young tableaux, one type of combinatorial object that generates the Schur basis for symmetric functions. Generalizing Young's lattice, we introduce a new partial order on weak compositions that we call the key poset. Saturated chains in this poset correspond to standard key tableaux, the combinatorial objects that generate the key polynomials, a nonsymmetric polynomial generalization of the Schur basis. Generalizing skew Schur functions, we define skew key polynomials in terms of this new poset. Using weak dual equivalence, we give a nonnegative weak composition Littlewood-Richardson rule for the key expansion of skew key polynomials, generalizing the flagged Littlewood-Richardson rule of Reiner and Shimozono.
