On the number of simultaneous core partitions with $d$-distinct parts
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the number $N_{d,r}(s)$ of $(s, s+r)$-core integer partitions with $d$-distinct parts. Our first main result is a proof of a recurrence relation conjectured by Sahin in 2018. We also derive generating functions, asymptotics, and exact formulas for $N_{d,r}(s)$ when $r$ is within $d$ of a multiple of $s$. Finally, we exhibit a surprising connection to $A$-restricted compositions.

An Improved Algorithm for Counting Graphical Degree Sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present an improved version of a previous efficient algorithm that computes the number $D(n)$ of zero-free graphical degree sequences of length $n$. A main ingredient of the improvement lies in a more efficient way to compute the function $P(N,k,l,s)$ of Barnes and Savage. We further show that the algorithm can be easily adapted to compute the $D(i)$ values for all $i\le n$ in a single run. Theoretical analysis shows that the new algorithm to compute all $D(i)$ values for $i\le n$ is a constant times faster than the previous algorithm to compute a single $D(n)$. Experimental evaluations show that the constant of improvement is about 10. We also perform simulations to estimate the asymptotic order of $D(n)$ by generating uniform random samples from the set of $E(n)$ integer partitions of fixed length $n$ with even sum and largest part less than $n$ and computing the proportion of them that are graphical degree sequences. The known numerical results of $D(n)$ for $n\le 290$ together with the known bounds of $D(n)$ and simulation results allow us to make an informed guess about its unknown asymptotic order. The techniques for the improved algorithm can be applied to compute other similar functions that count the number of graphical degree sequences of various classes of graphs of order $n$ and that all involve the function $P(N,k,l,s)$.

Number of Vertices of the Polytope of Integer Partitions and Factorization of the Partitioned Number
Published • View Publication • BIB
The polytope of integer partitions of $n$ is the convex hull of the corresponding $n$-dimensional integer points. Its vertices are of importance because every partition is their convex combination. Computation shows intriguing features of $v(n),$ the number of the polytope vertices: its graph has a saw-toothed shape with the highest peaks at prime $n$'s. We explain the shape of $v(n)$ by the large number of partitions of even $n$'s that were counted by N. Metropolis and P. R. Stein. These partitions are convex combinations of two others. We reveal that divisibility of $n$ by 3 also reduces the value of $v(n),$ which is caused by partitions that are convex combinations of three but not two others, and characterize convex representations of such integer points in arbitrary integral polytope. To approach the prime $n$ phenomenon, we use a specific classification of integers and demonstrate that the graph of $v(n)$ is stratified to layers corresponding to resulting classes. Our main conjecture claims that $v(n)$ depends on collections of divisors of $n.$ We also offer an initial argument for that the number of vertices of the Gomory's master corner polyhedron on the cyclic group has features similar to those of $v(n).$

A generalized Hardy-Ramanujan formula for the number of restricted integer partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We derive the asymptotic formula for $p_n(N,M)$, the number of partitions of integer $n$ with part size at most $N$ and length at most $M$. We consider both $N$ and $M$ are comparable to $\sqrt{n}$. This is an extension of the classical Hardy-Ramanujan formula and Szekeres' formula. The proof relies on the saddle point method.

Asymptotic results for Representation Theory
Representation theory of finite groups portrays a marvelous crossroad of group theory, algebraic combinatorics, and probability. In particular the Plancherel measure is a probability that arises naturally from representation theory, and in this thesis we consider three ramifications of asymptotic questions for random Plancherel distributed representations. First we recall irreducible characters of the symmetric group, which are indexed by integer partitions. We focus on the so called 'dual approach', in which the partition indexing a character is now considered to be the variable. We extend a famous result of Kerov on the asymptotic of Plancherel distributed characters by studying partial trace and partial sum of a representation matrix. We decompose each of these objects into a main term and a remainder, and in each case we prove a central limit theorem for the main term. We apply these results to prove a law of large numbers for the partial sum. In the second part we consider projective representations of the symmetric group by converting a multirectangular approach developed by Stanley for the classical case. In particular, we present a positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the renormalized projective character, written as a polynomial in a new set of coordinates. We prove the positivity for the leading term of the polynomial. In the last part of the thesis we recall the theory of supercharacters, which is an alternative tool to representation theory when the classical approach proves to be intractable. We show that a generalization of the Plancherel measure, called the superplancherel measure, arises naturally. We focus on a particular supercharacter theory for the upper unitriangular group in which supercharacters are indexed by set partitions. We prove a limit shape result for a random set partition according to this distribution.

On the distribution of rank and crank statistics for integer partitions
Published in Res. Number Theory 5 (2019), no. 2, Art. 18, 8 pp • View Publication • BIB
Let $k$ be a positive integer and $m$ be an integer. Garvan's $k$-rank $N_k(m,n)$ is the number of partitions of $n$ into at least $(k-1)$ successive Durfee squares with $k$-rank equal to $m$. In this paper give some asymptotics for $N_k(m,n)$ with $|m|\ge \sqrt{n}$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. As a corollary, we give a more complete answer for the Dyson's crank distribution conjecture. We also establish some asymptotic formulas for finite differences of $N_k(m,n)$ with respect to $m$ with $m\gg \sqrt{n}\log n$.

A George Szekeres Formula for Restricted Partitions
We derive an asymptotic formula for $A(n,j,r)$ the number of integer partitions of $n$ into at most $j$ parts each part $\le r$. We assume $j$ and $r$ are near their mean values. We also investigate the second largest part, the number of parts $\ge 2$, etc. We show that the fraction of the partitions of an even integer $n$ that are graphical, ie. whose parts form the degree sequence of a simple graph, is $O(\ln^{-1/2} n)$. Probabilistic results are used in our discussion of graphical partitions. The George Szekeres circle method is essential for our asymptotic results on partitions. We determine the distributions defined by the successive ranks of partitions, generalizing the result of Erdos and Richmond for the rank of a partition.
The tree of numerical semigroups with low multiplicity
We show that the number of numerical semigroups with multiplicity three, four or five and fixed genus is increasing as a function in the genus. To this end we use the Kunz polytope for these multiplicities. Counting numerical semigroups with fixed multiplicity and genus is then an integer partition problem with some extra conditions (those of membership to the Kunz polytope). For the particular case of multiplicity four, we are able to prove that the number of numerical semigroups with multiplicity four and genus $g$ is the number of partitions $x+y+z=g+6$ with $0<x\le y\le z$, $x\neq 1$, $y\neq 2$ and $z\neq 3$.

Staircases to analytic sum-sides for many new integer partition identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type
Published • View Publication • BIB
We utilize the technique of staircases and jagged partitions to provide analytic sum-sides to some old and new partition identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type. Firstly, we conjecture a class of new partition identities related to the principally specialized characters of certain level $2$ modules for the affine Lie algebra $A_9^{(2)}$. Secondly, we provide analytic sum-sides to some earlier conjectures of the authors. Next, we use these analytic sum-sides to discover a number of further generalizations. Lastly, we apply this technique to the well-known Capparelli identities and present analytic sum-sides which we believe to be new. All of the new conjectures presented in this article are supported by a strong mathematical evidence.

Half-space Macdonald processes
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Pi 8 (2020) e11 • View Publication • BIB
Macdonald processes are measures on sequences of integer partitions built using the Cauchy summation identity for Macdonald symmetric functions. These measures are a useful tool to uncover the integrability of many probabilistic systems, including the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation and a number of other models in its universality class. In this paper we develop the structural theory behind half-space variants of these models and the corresponding half-space Macdonald processes. These processes are built using a Littlewood summation identity instead of the Cauchy identity, and their analysis is considerably harder than their full-space counterparts. We compute moments and Laplace transforms of observables for general half-space Macdonald measures. Introducing new dynamics preserving this class of measures, we relate them to various stochastic processes, in particular the log-gamma polymer in a half-quadrant (they are also related to the stochastic six-vertex model in a half-quadrant and the half-space ASEP). For the polymer model, we provide explicit integral formulas for the Laplace transform of the partition function. Non-rigorous saddle point asymptotics yield convergence of the directed polymer free energy to either the Tracy-Widom GOE, GSE or the Gaussian distribution depending on the average size of weights on the boundary.
On the distribution of the eigenvalues of the area operator in loop quantum gravity
Published in Classical and Quantum Gravity, 35 (2018) 065008 • View Publication • BIB
We study the distribution of the eigenvalues of the area operator in loop quantum gravity concentrating on the part of the spectrum relevant for isolated horizons. We first show that the approximations relying on integer partitions are not sufficient to obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalue distribution for large areas. We then develop a method, based on Laplace transforms, that provides a very accurate solution to this problem. The representation that we get is valid for any area and can be used to obtain its asymptotics in the large area limit.

On the Largest Part Size and Its Multiplicity of a Random Integer Partition
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $λ$ be a partition of the positive integer $n$ chosen umiformly at random among all such partitions. Let $L_n=L_n(λ)$ and $M_n=M_n(λ)$ be the largest part size and its multiplicity, respectively. For large $n$, we focus on a comparison between the partition statistics $L_n$ and $L_n M_n$. In terms of convergence in distribution, we show that they behave in the same way. However, it turns out that the expectation of $L_n M_n -L_n$ grows as fast as $\frac{1}{2}\log{n}$ We obtain a precise asymptotic expansion for this expectation and conclude with an open problem arising from this study.

A generalised Euler-Poincaré formula for associahedra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We derive a formula for the number of flip-equivalence classes of tilings of an $n$-gon by collections of tiles of shape dictated by an integer partition $λ$. The proof uses the Euler-Poincaré formula; and the formula itself generalises the Euler-Poincaré formula for associahedra.

On the density of the odd values of the partition function, II: An infinite conjectural framework
Published in J. of Number Theory 188 (2018), 357--370 • View Publication • BIB
We continue our study of a basic but seemingly intractable problem in integer partition theory, namely the conjecture that $p(n)$ is odd exactly $50\%$ of the time. Here, we greatly extend on our previous paper by providing a doubly-indexed, infinite framework of conjectural identities modulo 2, and show how to, in principle, prove each such identity. However, our conjecture remains open in full generality. A striking consequence is that, under suitable existence conditions, if any $t$-multipartition function is odd with positive density and $t\not \equiv 0$ (mod 3), then $p(n)$ is also odd with positive density. These are all facts that appear virtually impossible to show unconditionally today. Our arguments employ a combination of algebraic and analytic methods, including certain technical tools recently developed by Radu in his study of the parity of the Fourier coefficients of modular forms.

Asymptotic Properties of Random Restricted Partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study two types of probability measures on the set of integer partitions of $n$ with at most $m$ parts. The first one chooses the random partition with a chance related to its largest part only. We then obtain the limiting distributions of all of the parts together and that of the largest part as $n$ tends to infinity while $m$ is fixed or tends to infinity. In particular, if $m$ goes to infinity not too fast, the largest part satisfies the central limit theorem. The second measure is very general. It includes the Dirichlet distribution and the uniform distribution as special cases. We derive the asymptotic distributions of the parts jointly by taking limits of $n$ and $m$ in the same manner as that in the first probability measure.

Boundary optimization for rough sets
Published in Discrete Math. 341 (2018) 2465--2477 • View Publication • BIB
Let $n > m\ge 2$ be integers and let $\mathcal{A}=\{A_1,\dots,A_m\}$ be a partition of $[n]=\{1,\dots,n\}$. For $X \subseteq [n]$, its $\mathcal{A}$-boundary region $\mathcal{A}(X)$ is defined to be the union of those blocks $A_i$ of $\mathcal{A}$ for which $A_i\cap X\neq \emptyset$ and $A_i\cap ([n] \setminus X)\neq \emptyset$. For three different probability distributions on the power set of $[n]$, partitions $\mathcal{A}$ of $[n]$ are determined such that the expected cardinality of the $\mathcal{A}$-boundary region of a randomly chosen subset of $[n]$ is minimal and maximal, respectively. The problem can be reduced to an optimization problem for integer partitions of $n$. In the most difficult case, the concave-convex shape of the corresponding weight function as well as several other inequalities are proved using an integral representation of the weight function. In one case, there is an interesting analogon to the AZ-identity. The study is motivated by the rough set theory.

A general asymptotic formula for distinct partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Many asymptotic formulas exist for unrestricted integer partitions as well as for distinct partitions of integers into a finite number of parts. Szekeres and Canfield have derived an asymptotic formula for the number of partitions that is valid for any value of the number of parts. We obtain general asymptotic formulas for distinct partitions that are valid in a wider range of parameters than the existing asymptotic formulas, and we recover the known asymptotic results as special cases of our general formulas.

Enumerating kth Roots in the Symmetric Inverse Monoid
The symmetric inverse monoid, SIM(n), is the set of all partial one-to-one mappings from the set {1, 2, ... , n} to itself under the operation of composition. Earlier research on the symmetric inverse monoid delineated the process for determining whether an element of SIM(n) has a kth root. The problem of enumerating kth roots of a given element of SIM(n) has since been posed, which is solved in this work. In order to find the number of kth roots of an element, all that is needed is to know the cycle and path structure of the element. Conveniently, the cycle and cycle-free components may be considered separately in calculating the number of kth roots. Since the enumeration problem has been completed for the symmetric group, this paper only focuses on the cycle-free elements of SIM(n). The formulae derived for cycle-free elements of SIM(n) here utilize integer partitions, similar to their use in the expressions given for the number of kth roots of permutations.
Box polynomials and the excedance matrix
We consider properties of the box polynomials, a one variable polynomial defined over all integer partitions $λ$ whose Young diagrams fit in an $m$ by $n$ box. We show that these polynomials can be expressed by the finite difference operator applied to the power $x^{m+n}$. Evaluating box polynomials yields a variety of identities involving set partition enumeration. We extend the latter identities using restricted growth words and a new operator called the fast Fourier operator, and consider connections between set partition enumeration and the chromatic polynomial on graphs. We also give connections between the box polynomials and the excedance matrix, which encodes combinatorial data from a noncommutative quotient algebra motivated by the recurrence for the excedance set statistic on permutations.

Analyzing Boltzmann Samplers for Bose-Einstein Condensates with Dirichlet Generating Functions
Published in Proceedings of the 15th Workshop on Analytic Algorithmics and Combinatorics (ANALCO 2018) 107-117 • View Publication • BIB
Boltzmann sampling is commonly used to uniformly sample objects of a particular size from large combinatorial sets. For this technique to be effective, one needs to prove that (1) the sampling procedure is efficient and (2) objects of the desired size are generated with sufficiently high probability. We use this approach to give a provably efficient sampling algorithm for a class of weighted integer partitions related to Bose-Einstein condensation from statistical physics. Our sampling algorithm is a probabilistic interpretation of the ordinary generating function for these objects, derived from the symbolic method of analytic combinatorics. Using the Khintchine-Meinardus probabilistic method to bound the rejection rate of our Boltzmann sampler through singularity analysis of Dirichlet generating functions, we offer an alternative approach to analyze Boltzmann samplers for objects with multiplicative structure.
