Connected Dominating Sets in Graphs With Stability Number Three
In the special case of graphs G of independence number a(G)=3 without induced chordless cycles C7 it is shown that exists connected dominating set D of vertices with number of vertices n(D)<=4. Using the concept of connected dominating sets, we defined a new invariant h(G) that does not exceed the number of Hadwiger. For the considered graphs it is shown that h(G)>=n(G)/4.

On the intersection graph of ideals of $\mathbb{Z}_m$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $m>1$ be an integer, and let $I(\mathbb{Z}_m)^*$ be the set of all non-zero proper ideals of $\mathbb{Z}_m$. The intersection graph of ideals of $\mathbb{Z}_m$, denoted by $G(\mathbb{Z}_m)$, is a graph with vertices $I(\mathbb{Z}_m)^*$ and two distinct vertices $I,J\in I(\mathbb{Z}_m)^*$ are adjacent if and only if $I\cap J\neq 0$. Let $n>1$ be an integer and $\mathbb{Z}_n$ be a $\mathbb{Z}_m$-module. In this paper, we introduce and study a kind of graph structure of $\mathbb{Z}_m$, denoted by $G_n(\mathbb{Z}_m)$. It is the undirected graph with the vertex set $I(\mathbb{Z}_m)^*$, and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if $I\mathbb{Z}_n\cap J\mathbb{Z}_n\neq 0$. Clearly, $G_m(\mathbb{Z}_m)=G(\mathbb{Z}_m)$. We obtain some graph theoretical properties of $G_n(\mathbb{Z}_m)$ and we compute some of its numerical invariants, namely girth, independence number, domination number, maximum degree and chromatic index. We also determine all integer numbers $n$ and $m$ for which $G_n(\mathbb{Z}_m)$ is Eulerian.

The independence number of the Birkhoff polytope graph, and applications to maximally recoverable codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Maximally recoverable codes are codes designed for distributed storage which combine quick recovery from single node failure and optimal recovery from catastrophic failure. Gopalan et al [SODA 2017] studied the alphabet size needed for such codes in grid topologies and gave a combinatorial characterization for it. Consider a labeling of the edges of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ with labels coming from $F_2^d$ , that satisfies the following condition: for any simple cycle, the sum of the labels over its edges is nonzero. The minimal d where this is possible controls the alphabet size needed for maximally recoverable codes in n x n grid topologies. Prior to the current work, it was known that d is between $(\log n)^2$ and $n\log n$. We improve both bounds and show that d is linear in n. The upper bound is a recursive construction which beats the random construction. The lower bound follows by first relating the problem to the independence number of the Birkhoff polytope graph, and then providing tight bounds for it using the representation theory of the symmetric group.

Triangle-free planar graphs with small independence number
Since planar triangle-free graphs are 3-colourable, such a graph with n vertices has an independent set of size at least n/3. We prove that unless the graph contains a certain obstruction, its independence number is at least n/(3-epsilon) for some fixed epsilon>0. We also provide a reduction rule for this obstruction, which enables us to transform any plane triangle-free graph G into a plane triangle-free graph G' such that alpha(G')-|G'|/3=alpha(G)-|G|/3 and |G'|<=(alpha(G)-|G|/3)/epsilon. We derive a number of algorithmic consequences as well as a structural description of n-vertex plane triangle-free graphs whose independence number is close to n/3.
Problems on Matchings and Independent Sets of a Graph

Let $G$ be a finite simple graph. For $X \subset V(G)$, the difference of $X$, $d(X) := |X| - |N (X)|$ where $N(X)$ is the neighborhood of $X$ and $\max \, \{d(X):X\subset V(G)\}$ is called the critical difference of $G$. $X$ is called a critical set if $d(X)$ equals the critical difference and ker$(G)$ is the intersection of all critical sets. It is known that ker$(G)$ is an independent (vertex) set of $G$. diadem$(G)$ is the union of all critical independent sets. An independent set $S$ is an inclusion minimal set with $d(S) > 0$ if no proper subset of $S$ has positive difference. A graph $G$ is called König-Egerváry if the sum of its independence number ($α(G)$) and matching number ($μ(G)$) equals $|V(G)|$. It is known that bipartite graphs are König-Egerváry. In this paper, we study independent sets with positive difference for which every proper subset has a smaller difference and prove a result conjectured by Levit and Mandrescu in 2013. The conjecture states that for any graph, the number of inclusion minimal sets $S$ with $d(S) > 0$ is at least the critical difference of the graph. We also give a short proof of the inequality $|$ker$(G)| + |$diadem$(G)| \le 2α(G)$ (proved by Short in 2016). A characterization of unicyclic non-König-Egerváry graphs is also presented and a conjecture which states that for such a graph $G$, the critical difference equals $α(G) - μ(G)$, is proved. We also make an observation about ker$G)$ using Edmonds-Gallai Structure Theorem as a concluding remark.

On Coloring Random Subgraphs of a Fixed Graph
Given an arbitrary graph $G$ we study the chromatic number of a random subgraph $G_{1/2}$ obtained from $G$ by removing each edge independently with probability $1/2$. Studying $χ(G_{1/2})$ has been suggested by Bukh~\cite{Bukh}, who asked whether $\mathbb{E}[χ(G_{1/2})] \geq Ω( χ(G)/\log(χ(G)))$ holds for all graphs $G$. In this paper we show that for any graph $G$ with chromatic number $k = χ(G)$ and for all $d \leq k^{1/3}$ it holds that $\Pr[χ(G_{1/2}) \leq d] < \exp \left(- Ω\left(\frac{k(k-d^3)}{d^3}\right)\right)$. In particular, $\Pr[G_{1/2} \text{ is bipartite}] < \exp \left(- Ω\left(k^2 \right)\right)$. The later bound is tight up to a constant in $Ω(\cdot)$, and is attained when $G$ is the complete graph on $k$ vertices. As a technical lemma, that may be of independent interest, we prove that if in \emph{any} $d^3$ coloring of the vertices of $G$ there are at least $t$ monochromatic edges, then $\Pr[χ(G_{1/2}) \leq d] < e^{- Ω\left(t\right)}$. We also prove that for any graph $G$ with chromatic number $k = χ(G)$ and independence number $α(G) \leq O(n/k)$ it holds that $\mathbb{E}[χ(G_{1/2})] \geq Ω\left( k/\log(k) \right)$. This gives a positive answer to the question of Bukh for a large family of graphs.

The Roller-Coaster Conjecture Revisited
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is well-covered if all its maximal independent sets are of the same cardinality (Plummer, 1970). If G is a well-covered graph, has at least two vertices, and G-v is well-covered for every vertex v, then G is a 1-well-covered graph (Staples, 1975). We call G a λ-quasi-regularizable graph if λ |S| =< |N(S)| for every independent set S of G. The independence polynomial I(G;x) is the generating function of independent sets in a graph G (Gutman & Harary, 1983). The Roller-Coaster Conjecture (Michael & Travis, 2003), saying that for every permutation σ of the set {(α/2),...,α} there exists a well-covered graph G with independence number α such that the coefficients (s_{k}) of I(G;x) are chosen in accordance with σ, has been validated in (Cutler & Pebody, 2017). In this paper, we show that independence polynomials of λ-quasi-regularizable graphs are partially unimodal. More precisely, the coefficients of an upper part of I(G;x) are in non-increasing order. Based on this finding, we prove that the domain of the Roller- Coaster Conjecture can be shortened for well-covered graphs and 1-well-covered graphs.

Some Properties of the Nil-Graphs of Ideals of Commutative Rings
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and ${\rm Nil}(R)$ be the set of nilpotent elements of $R$. The nil-graph of ideals of $R$ is defined as the graph $\mathbb{AG}_N(R)$ whose vertex set is $\{I:\ (0)\neq I\lhd R$ and there exists a non-trivial ideal $J$ such that $IJ\subseteq {\rm Nil}(R)\}$ and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if $IJ\subseteq {\rm Nil}(R)$. Here, we study conditions under which $\mathbb{AG}_N(R)$ is complete or bipartite. Also, the independence number of $\mathbb{AG}_N(R)$ is determined, where $R$ is a reduced ring. Finally, we classify Artinian rings whose nil-graphs of ideals have genus at most one.

On intersecting families of independent sets in trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
A family of sets is intersecting if every pair of its sets intersect. A star is a family with some element (a center) in each of its sets. The classical 1961 result of Erdős, Ko, and Rado states that every intersecting family of r-sets with $r\leq n/2$ has size at most that of a star. We say that graph G is r-EKR if, among all intersecting families of independent r-sets of G, the largest is attained by a star. In 2005 Holroyd and Talbot conjectured that every graph G is r-EKR for all $1\leq r\leq μ(G)/2$, where $μ(G)$ is the size of the smallest maximal independent set in G. We verified the conjecture in 2011 for all chordal graphs containing an isolated vertex. For graphs without isolated vertices it is difficult to determine the center of the largest star, which is often necessary to prove that they are EKR. A tree has the leaf property if its largest star occurs on one of its leaves. We proved that every tree T has the leaf property when $r\leq 4$, and in 2017 Borg and other authors gave examples of families of trees not having the leaf property when $r\geq 5$. A split vertex in a tree is a vertex of degree at least 3. A spider is a tree with exactly one split vertex. Here we prove that all spiders have the leaf property for all $r\leq α(G)$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$, and we characterize which of its leaves are maximum star centers. A pendant tree is one for which each of its split vertices is adjacent to a leaf. Here we show that all pendant trees have the leaf property for all $r\leq α(G)$. We also consider pendant trees with exactly two split vertices and provide partial results on the locations of their maximum star centers.

On the maximum number of colorings of a graph
Published in Journal of Combinatorics, Vol 9, No. 3 (2018), pp. 489-497 • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{C}_k(n)$ be the family of all connected $k$-chromatic graphs of order $n$. Given a natural number $x\geq k$, we consider the problem of finding the maximum number of $x$-colorings among graphs in $\mathcal{C}_k(n)$. When $k\leq 3$ the answer to this problem is known, and when $k\geq 4$ the problem is wide open. For $k\geq 4$ it was conjectured that the maximum number of $x$-colorings is $x(x-1)\cdots (x-k+1)\,x^{n-k}$. In this article, we prove this conjecture under the additional condition that the independence number of the graphs is at most $2$.

Independent sets in the union of two Hamiltonian cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by a question on the maximal number of vertex disjoint Schrijver graphs in the Kneser graph, we investigate the following function, denoted by $f(n,k)$: the maximal number of Hamiltonian cycles on an $n$ element set, such that no two cycles share a common independent set of size more than $k$. We shall mainly be interested in the behavior of $f(n,k)$ when $k$ is a linear function of $n$, namely $k=cn$. We show a threshold phenomenon: there exists a constant $c_t$ such that for $c<c_t$, $f(n,cn)$ is bounded by a constant depending only on $c$ and not on $n$, and for $c_t <c$, $f(n,cn)$ is exponentially large in $n ~(n \to \infty)$. We prove that $0.26 < c_t < 0.36$, but the exact value of $c_t$ is not determined. For the lower bound we prove a technical lemma, which for graphs that are the union of two Hamiltonian cycles establishes a relation between the independence number and the number of $K_4$ subgraphs. A corollary of this lemma is that if a graph $G$ on $n>12$ vertices is the union of two Hamiltonian cycles and $α(G)=n/4$, then $V(G)$ can be covered by vertex-disjoint $K_4$ subgraphs.

Extremal Values of the Chromatic Number for a Given Degree Sequence
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a degree sequence $d:d_1\geq \cdots \geq d_n$, we consider the smallest chromatic number $χ_{\min}(d)$ and the largest chromatic number $χ_{\max}(d)$ among all graphs with degree sequence $d$. We show that if $d_n\geq 1$, then $χ_{\min}(d)\leq \max\left\{ 3,d_1-\frac{n+1}{4d_1}+4\right\}$, and, if $\sqrt{n+\frac{1}{4}}-\frac{1}{2}>d_1\geq d_n\geq 1$, then $χ_{\max}(d)=\max\limits_{i\in [n]}\min\left\{ i,d_i+1\right\}$. For a given degree sequence $d$ with bounded entries, we show that $χ_{\min}(d)$, $χ_{\max}(d)$, and also the smallest independence number $α_{\min}(d)$ among all graphs with degree sequence $d$, can be determined in polynomial time.

Independent sets near the lower bound in bounded degree graphs

By Brook's Theorem, every n-vertex graph of maximum degree at most Delta >= 3 and clique number at most Delta is Delta-colorable, and thus it has an independent set of size at least n/Delta. We give an approximate characterization of graphs with independence number close to this bound, and use it to show that the problem of deciding whether such a graph has an indepdendent set of size at least n/Delta+k has a kernel of size O(k).

Graphs vertex-partitionable into strong cliques
A graph is said to be well-covered if all its maximal independent sets are of the same size. In 1999, Yamashita and Kameda introduced a subclass of well-covered graphs, called localizable graphs and defined as graphs having a partition of the vertex set into strong cliques, where a clique in a graph is strong if it intersects all maximal independent sets. Yamashita and Kameda observed that all well-covered trees are localizable, pointed out that the converse inclusion fails in general, and asked for a characterization of localizable graphs. In this paper we obtain several structural and algorithmic results about localizable graphs. Our results include a proof of the fact that every very well-covered graph is localizable and characterizations of localizable graphs within the classes of line graphs, triangle-free graphs, $C_4$-free graphs, and cubic graphs, each leading to a polynomial time recognition algorithm. On the negative side, we prove NP-hardness of recognizing localizable graphs within the classes of weakly chordal graphs, complements of line graphs, and graphs of independence number three. Furthermore, using localizable graphs we disprove a conjecture due to Zaare-Nahandi about $k$-partite well-covered graphs having all maximal cliques of size $k$. Our results unify and generalize several results from the literature.

Planar Graphs have Independence Ratio at least 3/13
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics. Vol. 23(3), 2016, #P3.45 • View Publication • BIB
The 4 Color Theorem (4CT) implies that every $n$-vertex planar graph has an independent set of size at least $\frac{n}4$; this is best possible, as shown by the disjoint union of many copies of $K_4$. In 1968, Erdős asked whether this bound on independence number could be proved more easily than the full 4CT. In 1976 Albertson showed (independently of the 4CT) that every $n$-vertex planar graph has an independent set of size at least $\frac{2n}9$. Until now, this remained the best bound independent of the 4CT. Our main result improves this bound to $\frac{3n}{13}$.

$3$-uniform hypergraphs and linear cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Gyárfás, Győri and Simonovits proved that if a $3$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices has no linear cycles, then its independence number $α\ge \frac{2n} {5}$. The hypergraph consisting of vertex disjoint copies of a complete hypergraph $K_5^3$ on five vertices, shows that equality can hold. They asked whether this bound can be improved if we exclude $K_5^3$ as a subhypergraph and whether such a hypergraph is $2$-colorable. In this paper we answer these questions affirmatively. Namely, we prove that if a $3$-uniform linear-cycle-free hypergraph doesn't contain $K_5^3$ as a subhypergraph, then it is $2$-colorable. This result clearly implies that its independence number $α\ge \lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil$. We show that this bound is sharp. Gyárfás, Győri and Simonovits also proved that a linear-cycle-free $3$-uniform hypergraph contains a vertex of strong degree at most 2. In this context, we show that a linear-cycle-free $3$-uniform hypergraph has a vertex of degree at most $n-2$ when $n \ge 10$.

A graph for which the inertia bound is not tight
Published • View Publication • BIB
The inertia bound gives an upper bound on the independence number of a graph by considering the inertia of matrices corresponding to the graph. The bound is known to be tight for graphs on 10 or fewer vertices as well as for all perfect graphs. The question has been asked as to whether the bound is always tight. We show that the bound is not tight for the Paley graph on 17 vertices as well as for the graph obtained from Paley 17 by deleting a vertex.

Transference for the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
For natural numbers $n,r \in \mathbb{N}$ with $n\ge r$, the Kneser graph $K(n,r)$ is the graph on the family of $r$-element subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ in which two sets are adjacent if and only if they are disjoint. Delete the edges of $K(n,r)$ with some probability, independently of each other: is the independence number of this random graph equal to the independence number of the Kneser graph itself? We answer this question affirmatively as long as $r/n$ is bounded away from $1/2$, even when the probability of retaining an edge of the Kneser graph is quite small. This gives us a random analogue of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem since an independent set in the Kneser graph is the same as a uniform intersecting family. To prove our main result, we give some new estimates for the number of disjoint pairs in a family in terms of its distance from an intersecting family, these might be of independent interest.

We prove that for every $ε> 0$ this conjecture is equivalent to its restriction on a specific set of edge-chromatic critical graphs with independence ratio smaller than $\frac{1}{2} + ε$.

Edge Clique Cover of Claw-free Graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory, Volume 90, 2018, 311 -- 405 • View Publication • BIB
The smallest number of cliques, covering all edges of a graph $ G $, is called the (edge) clique cover number of $ G $ and is denoted by $ cc(G) $. It is an easy observation that for every line graph $ G $ with $ n $ vertices, $cc(G)\leq n $. G. Chen et al. [Discrete Math. 219 (2000), no. 1--3, 17--26; MR1761707] extended this observation to all quasi-line graphs and questioned if the same assertion holds for all claw-free graphs. In this paper, using the celebrated structure theorem of claw-free graphs due to Chudnovsky and Seymour, we give an affirmative answer to this question for all claw-free graphs with independence number at least three. In particular, we prove that if $ G $ is a connected claw-free graph on $ n $ vertices with $ α(G)\geq 3 $, then $ cc(G)\leq n $ and equality holds if and only if $ G $ is either the graph of icosahedron, or the complement of a graph on $10$ vertices called twister or the $p^{th}$ power of the cycle $ C_n $, for $1\leq p \leq \lfloor (n-1)/3\rfloor $.
