A sandwich theorem for the spectrum of graph coverings
We show that all normal covers of a fixed finite graph $G$ sitting between the universal and maximal abelian covers share the same atomic part of their spectral measures. We give an explicit double formula for the mass of atoms which generalises and unifies known results on universal covering trees and maximal abelian covers. It also proves an extension of a conjecture in physics literature on hyperbolic lattices. Moreover, we also establish the logarithmic Hölder regularity of the continuous part of the spectral measures. Our proof combines techniques from von Neumann algebras, matching theory and the monotone labelling method.
In an appendix, we prove a converse generalised Gallai-Edmonds structural theorem which might be of independent interest.
On some k-fold generalizations of Lovász theta and their sandwich theorems
We study several $k$-fold generalizations of the Lovász theta function associated with the maximum $k$-colorable induced subgraph problem. The first is the Narasimhan--Manber parameter $\vartheta_k$. We prove that, for graphs whose adjacency matrix belongs to a homogeneous partially coherent algebra, this parameter is recovered by the theta number of the Cartesian product with the complete graph on $k$ vertices. This class includes distance-regular and $1$-walk-regular graphs, and thus our result generalizes a theorem by Sinjorgo and Sotirov (2022) for graphs that are vertex- and edge-transitive. We introduce a new parameter $\varphi_k$ obtained from orthonormal representations of graphs and show the inequality $\varphi_k \leq \vartheta_k$. For both parameters, we study the smallest $k$ for which the parameter is equal to the number of vertices; these saturation parameters yield lower bounds on the chromatic number. We determine which vertex-weighted versions of these parameters are gauges, and discuss a natural definition for the $k$-fold theta body of a graph. We conclude with open questions comparing $\vartheta_k$, $\varphi_k$, $\vartheta(G\square K_k)$, and related convexifications.
A Tauberian approach to metric scaling limits of random discrete structures, with an application to random planar maps
We prove sandwich theorems and a Tauberian theorem in the space of compact metric measure spaces, endowed with the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov (GHP) topology. These results hold with respect to a close relative of Gromov's Lipschitz order. As a proof-of-concept of a general method to prove metric scaling limits of random discrete structures, we give an application to the theory of random planar maps: the Brownian sphere is the scaling limit in the GHP topology of irreducible quandrangulations. Our main inputs are (i) the convergence of general quadrangulations to the Brownian sphere (Le Gall, 2013; Miermont, 2013); and (ii) couplings where irreducible quadrangulations of the hexagon are "grown" by face-openings (Addario-Berry, 2014).

Equipartition theory, beginning with the classical ham sandwich theorem, seeks the fair division of finite point sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ by the full-dimensional regions determined by a prescribed geometric dissection of $\mathbb{R}^d$. Here we examine $\textit{equidistributions}$ of finite point sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ by prescribed $\textit{low dimensional}$ subsets. Our main result states that if $r\geq 3$ is a prime power, then for any $m$-coloring of a sufficiently small point set $X$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, there exists an $r$-fan in $\mathbb{R}^d$ -- that is, the union of $r$ ``half-flats'' of codimension $r-2$ centered about a common $(r-1)$-codimensional affine subspace -- which captures all the points of $X$ in such a way that each half-flat contains at most an $r$-th of the points from each color class. The number of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ we require for this is essentially tight when $m\geq 2$. Additionally, we extend our equidistribution results to ''piercing'' distributions in a similar fashion to Dolnikov's hyperplane transversal generalization of the ham sandwich theorem. By analogy with recent work of Frick et al., our results are obtained by applying Gale duality to linear cases of topological Tverberg-type theorems. Finally, we extend our distribution results to multiple $r$-fans after establishing a multiple intersection version of a topological Tverberg-type theorem due to Sarkaria.

The Tverberg--Vrećica conjecture claims a broad generalization of Tverberg's classical theorem. One of its consequences, the central transversal theorem, extends both the centerpoint theorem and the ham sandwich theorem. In this manuscript, we establish complex analogues of these results, where the corresponding transversals are complex affine spaces. The proofs of the complex Tverberg--Vrećica conjecture and its optimal colorful version rely on the non-vanishing of an equivariant Euler class. Furthermore, we obtain new Borsuk--Ulam-type theorems on complex Stiefel manifolds. These theorems yield complex analogues of recent extensions of the ham sandwich theorem for mass assignments by Axelrod-Freed and Soberón, and provide a direct proof of the complex central transversal theorem.

We prove a colorful generalization of the Borsuk--Ulam theorem and derive colorful consequences from it, such as a colorful generalization of the ham sandwich theorem. Even in the uncolored case this specializes to a strengthening of the ham sandwich theorem, which given an additional condition, contains a result of Bárány, Hubard, and Jerónimo on well-separated measures as a special case. We prove a colorful generalization of Fan's antipodal sphere covering theorem, we derive a short proof of Gale's colorful KKM theorem, and we prove a colorful generalization of Brouwer's fixed point theorem. Our results also provide an alternative between Radon-type intersection results and KKM-type covering results. Finally, we prove colorful Borsuk--Ulam theorems for higher symmetry.
Transversal generalizations of hyperplane equipartitions

The classical Ham Sandwich theorem states that any $d$ point sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ can be simultaneously bisected by a single affine hyperplane. A generalization of Dolnikov asserts that any $d$ families of pairwise intersecting compact, convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ admit a common hyperplane transversal. We extend Dolnikov's theorem by showing that families of compact convex sets satisfying more general non-disjointness conditions admit common transversals by multiple hyperplanes. In particular, these generalize all known optimal results to the long-standing Grünbaum--Hadwiger--Ramos measure equipartition problem in the case of two hyperplanes. Our proof proceeds by establishing topological Radon-type intersection theorems and then applying Gale duality in the linear setting. For a single hyperplane, this gives a new proof of Dolnikov's original result via Sarkaria's non-embedding criterion for simplicial complexes.
Bisections of mass assignments using flags of affine spaces

We use recent extensions of the Borsuk--Ulam theorem for Stiefel manifolds to generalize the ham sandwich theorem to mass assignments. A $k$-dimensional mass assignment continuously imposes a measure on each $k$-dimensional affine subspace of $\mathbb{R}^d$. Given a finite collection of mass assignments of different dimensions, one may ask if there is some sequence of affine subspaces $S_{k-1} \subset S_k \subset \ldots \subset S_{d-1} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ such that $S_i$ bisects all the mass assignments on $S_{i+1}$ for every $i$. We show it is possible to do so whenever the number of mass assignments of dimensions $(k,\ldots,d)$ is a permutation of $(k,\ldots,d)$. We extend previous work on mass assignments and the central transversal theorem. We also study the problem of halving several families of $(d-k)$-dimensional affine spaces of $\mathbb{R}^d$ using a $(k-1)$-dimensional affine subspace contained in some translate of a fixed $k$-dimensional affine space. For $k=d-1$, there results can be interpreted as dynamic ham sandwich theorems for families of moving points.

We show that the size of codes in projective space controls structural results for zeros of odd maps from spheres to Euclidean space. In fact, this relation is given through the topology of the space of probability measures on the sphere whose supports have diameter bounded by some specific parameter. Our main result is a generalization of the Borsuk--Ulam theorem, and we derive four consequences of it: (i) We give a new proof of a result of Simonyi and Tardos on topological lower bounds for the circular chromatic number of a graph; (ii) we study generic embeddings of spheres into Euclidean space and show that projective codes give quantitative bounds for a measure of genericity of sphere embeddings; and we prove generalizations of (iii) the Ham Sandwich theorem and (iv) the Lyusternik--Shnirel'man--Borsuk covering theorem for the case where the number of measures or sets in a covering, respectively, may exceed the ambient dimension.

The independence number, coloring number and related parameters are investigated in the setting of oriented hypergraphs using the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator. For the independence number, both an inertia--like bound and a ratio--like bound are shown. A Sandwich Theorem involving the clique number, the vector chromatic number and the coloring number is proved, as well as a lower bound for the vector chromatic number in terms of the smallest and the largest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian. In addition, spectral partition numbers are studied in relation to the coloring number.

We prove an extension of a ham sandwich theorem for families of lines in the plane by Dujmović and Langerman. Given two sets $A, B$ of $n$ lines each in the plane, we prove that it is possible to partition the plane into $r$ convex regions such that the following holds. For each region $C$ of the partition there is a subset of $c_r n^{1/r}$ lines of $A$ whose pairwise intersections are in $C$, and the same holds for $B$. In this statement $c_r$ only depends on $r$. We also prove that the dependence on $n$ is optimal.

We define non-commutative versions of the vertex packing polytope, the theta convex body and the fractional vertex packing polytope of a graph, and establish a quantum version of the Sandwich Theorem of Grötschel, Lovász and Schrijver. We define new non-commutative versions of the Lovász number of a graph which lead to an upper bound of the zero-error capacity of the corresponding quantum channel that can be genuinely better than the one established previously by Duan, Severini and Winter. We define non-commutative counterparts of widely used classical graph parameters and establish their interrelation.
Perfect weak modular product graphs
In this paper we enumerate the necessary and sufficient conditions for the weak modular product of two simple graphs to be perfect. The weak modular product differs from the direct product by also encoding non-adjacencies of the factor graphs in its edges. This work is motivated by the following: a 1978 theorem of Kozen states that two graphs on $n$ vertices are isomorphic if and only if there is a clique of size $n$ in the weak modular product between the two graphs. Furthermore, a straightforward corollary of Kozen's theorem and Lovász's sandwich theorem is if the weak modular product between two graphs is perfect, then checking if the graphs are isomorphic is polynomial in $n$. Interesting cases include complete multipartite graphs and disjoint unions of cliques. All perfect weak modular products have factors that fall into classes of graphs for which testing isomorphism is already known to be polynomial in the number of vertices.

We introduce the signless 1-Laplacians and the dual Cheeger constants on simplicial complexes. The connection of its spectrum to the combinatorial properties like independence number, chromatic number and dual Cheeger constant is investigated. Our estimates can be comparable to Hoffman's bounds in virtue of Laplacian on simplicial complexes. An interesting inequality relating multiplicity of the largest eigenvalue, independence number and chromatic number are provided, which could be regarded as a variant version of Lovasz sandwich theorem. Also, the behavior of the operator under the topological operations of wedge and duplication of motifs is studied. The Courant nodal domain theorem in spectral theory is extended to the case of signless 1-Laplacian on complexes.
Weak Modular Product of Bipartite Graphs, Bicliques and Isomorphism
A 1978 theorem of Kozen states that two graphs on $n$ vertices are isomorphic if and only if there is a clique of size $n$ in the weak modular product between the two graphs. Restricting to bipartite graphs and considering complete bipartite subgraphs (bicliques) therein, we study the combinatorics of the weak modular product. We identify cases where isomorphism is tractable using this approach, which we call Isomorphism via Biclique Enumeration (IvBE). We find that IvBE is polynomial for bipartite $2K_2$-free graphs and quasi-polynomial for families of bipartite graphs, where the largest induced matching and largest induced crown graph grows slowly in $n$, that is, $O(\mathrm{polylog }\, n)$. Furthermore, as expected a straightforward corollary of Kozen's theorem and Lovász's sandwich theorem is if the weak modular product between two graphs is perfect, then checking if the graphs are isomorphic is polynomial in $n$. However, we show that for balanced, bipartite graphs this is only true in a few trivial cases. In doing so we define a new graph product on bipartite graphs, the very weak modular product. The results pertaining to bicliques in bipartite graphs proved here may be of independent interest.
Thieves can make sandwiches

We prove a common generalization of the Ham Sandwich theorem and Alon's Necklace Splitting theorem. Our main results show the existence of fair distributions of $m$ measures in $R^d$ among $r$ thieves using roughly $mr/d$ convex pieces, even in the cases when $m$ is larger than the dimension. The main proof relies on a construction of a geometric realization of the topological join of two spaces of partitions of $R^d$ into convex parts, and the computation of the Fadell-Husseini ideal valued index of the resulting spaces.
Shattered Sets and the Hilbert Function
We study complexity measures on subsets of the boolean hypercube and exhibit connections between algebra (the Hilbert function) and combinatorics (VC theory). These connections yield results in both directions. Our main complexity-theoretic result proves that most linear program feasibility problems cannot be computed by polynomial-sized constant-depth circuits. Moreover, our result applies to a stronger regime in which the hyperplanes are fixed and only the directions of the inequalities are given as input to the circuit. We derive this result by proving that a rich class of extremal functions in VC theory cannot be approximated by low-degree polynomials. We also present applications of algebra to combinatorics. We provide a new algebraic proof of the Sandwich Theorem, which is a generalization of the well-known Sauer-Perles-Shelah Lemma. Finally, we prove a structural result about downward-closed sets, related to the Chvátal conjecture in extremal combinatorics.
Labeled compression schemes for extremal classes

It is a long-standing open problem whether there always exists a compression scheme whose size is of the order of the Vapnik-Chervonienkis (VC) dimension $d$. Recently compression schemes of size exponential in $d$ have been found for any concept class of VC dimension $d$. Previously, compression schemes of size $d$ have been given for maximum classes, which are special concept classes whose size equals an upper bound due to Sauer-Shelah. We consider a generalization of maximum classes called extremal classes. Their definition is based on a powerful generalization of the Sauer-Shelah bound called the Sandwich Theorem, which has been studied in several areas of combinatorics and computer science. The key result of the paper is a construction of a sample compression scheme for extremal classes of size equal to their VC dimension. We also give a number of open problems concerning the combinatorial structure of extremal classes and the existence of unlabeled compression schemes for them.

We generalize the ham sandwich theorem to $d+1$ measures in $\mathbb{R}^d$ as follows. Let $μ_1,μ_2, \dots, μ_{d+1}$ be absolutely continuous finite Borel measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Let $ω_i=μ_i(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for $i\in [d+1]$, $ω=\min\{ω_i; i\in [d+1]\}$ and assume that $\sum_{j=1}^{d+1} ω_j=1$. Assume that $ω_i \le 1/d$ for every $i\in[d+1]$. Then there exists a hyperplane $h$ such that each open halfspace $H$ defined by $h$ satisfies $μ_i(H) \le (\sum_{j=1}^{d+1} μ_j(H))/d$ for every $i \in [d+1]$ and $\sum_{j=1}^{d+1} μ_j(H) \ge \min(1/2, 1-dω) \ge 1/(d+1)$. As a consequence we obtain that every $(d+1)$-colored set of $nd$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that no color is used for more than $n$ points can be partitioned into $n$ disjoint rainbow $(d-1)$-dimensional simplices.
A Lower Bound on the Crossing Number of Uniform Hypergraphs

In this paper, we consider the embedding of a complete $d$-uniform geometric hypergraph with $n$ vertices in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where each hyperedge is represented as a $(d-1)$-simplex, and a pair of hyperedges is defined to cross if they are vertex-disjoint and contains a common point in the relative interior of the simplices corresponding to them. As a corollary of the Van Kampen-Flores Theorem, it can be seen that such a hypergraph contains $Ω(\frac{2^d}{\sqrt{d}})$ $n\choose 2d$ crossing pairs of hyperedges. Using Gale Transform and Ham Sandwich Theorem, we improve this lower bound to $Ω(\frac{2^d \log d}{\sqrt{d}})$ $n\choose 2d$.
