The central curve of a linear program is an algebraic curve specified by linear and quadratic constraints arising from complementary slackness. It is the union of the various central paths for minimizing or maximizing the cost function over any region in the associated hyperplane arrangement. We determine the degree, arithmetic genus and defining prime ideal of the central curve, thereby answering a question of Bayer and Lagarias. These invariants, along with the degree of the Gauss image of the curve, are expressed in terms of the matroid of the input matrix. Extending work of Dedieu, Malajovich and Shub, this yields an instance-specific bound on the total curvature of the central path, a quantity relevant for interior point methods. The global geometry of central curves is studied in detail.

Let \A be an affine hyperplane arrangement in $\C^\ell$ with complement $U$. Let $f_1, \..., f_n$ be linear polynomials defining the hyperplanes of \A, and $A^\cdot$ the algebra of differential forms generated by the 1-forms $d \log f_1, \..., d \log f_n$. To each $l \in \C^n$ we associate the master function $Φ=Φ_l = \prod_{i=1}^n f_i^{l_i}$ on $U$ and the closed logarithmic 1-form $ω= d \log Φ$. We assume $ω$ is an element of a rational linear subspace $D$ of $A^1$ of dimension $q>1$ such that the multiplication map $\bigwedge^k(D) \to A^k$ is zero for $p<k\leq q$. With this assumption, we prove every component of the critical locus $\crit(Φ)$ of $Φ$ has codimension at most $p$, and $\crit(Φ)$ is a union of intersections of level sets of rational master functions. We give conditions that guarantee $\crit(Φ)$ is nonempty and every component has codimension equal to $p$, in terms of syzygies among polynomial master functions.
If \A is $p$-generic, then $D$ is contained in the degree $p$ resonance variety $\R^p(\A)$ -- in this sense the present work complements previous work on resonance and critical loci of master functions. Any arrangement is 1-generic; in case $p=1$ we give a precise description of $\crit(Φ_l)$ in case $l$ lies in an isotropic subspace $D$ of $A^1$, using the multinet structure on \A corresponding to $D\subseteq \R^1(\A)$. This is carried out in detail for the Hessian arrangement. Finally, for arbitrary $p$ and \A, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a set of integral one-forms to span such a subspace, in terms of nested sets of \A, using tropical implicitization.
Non-Generic Tropical Hyperplane Arrangements and the Secondary polytope of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$
Ardila and Develin's paper on tropical oriented hyperplane arrangements and tropical oriented matroids defines tropical oriented matroids and conjectures a bijection between them and triangulations of products of simplices $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$. Oh and Yoo recently confirmed this conjecture; however, neither group addressed the case of hyperplanes that are not in generic position. These non-generic arrangements do not correspond to tropical oriented matroids, but they encode information about subdivisions of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$. This note considers the non-generic case and presents some preliminary results in the area.

Let $W$ be a finite reflection group. For a given $w \in W$, the following assertion may or may not be satisfied:
(*) The principal Bruhat order ideal of $w$ contains as many elements as there are regions in the inversion hyperplane arrangement of $w$.
We present a type independent combinatorial criterion which characterises the elements $w\in W$ that satisfy (*). A couple of immediate consequences are derived:
(1) The criterion only involves the order ideal of $w$ as an abstract poset. In this sense, (*) is a poset-theoretic property.
(2) For $W$ of type $A$, another characterisation of (*), in terms of pattern avoidance, was previously given in collaboration with Linusson, Shareshian and Sjöstrand. We obtain a short and simple proof of that result.
(3) If $W$ is a Weyl group and the Schubert variety indexed by $w \in W$ is rationally smooth, then $w$ satisfies (*).

We find explicit eigenvectors for the transition matrix of a random walk due to Bidegare, Hanlon and Rockmore. This is accomplished by using Brown and Diaconis' analysis of its stationary distribution, together with some combinatorics of functions on the face lattice of a hyperplane arrangement, due to Gelfand and Varchenko.

We consider hyperplane arrangements generated by generic points and study their intersection lattices. These arrangements are known to be equivalent to discriminantal arrangements. We show a fundamental structure of the intersection lattices by decomposing the poset ideals as direct products of smaller lattices corresponding to smaller dimensions. Based on this decomposition we compute the Möbius functions of the lattices and the characteristic polynomials of the arrangements up to dimension six.

Flips of diagonals in colored triangle-free triangulations of a convex polygon are interpreted as moves between two adjacent chambers in a certain graphic hyperplane arrangement. Properties of geodesics in the associated flip graph are deduced. In particular, it is shown that: (1) every diagonal is flipped exactly once in a geodesic between distinguished pairs of antipodes; (2) the number of geodesics between these antipodes is equal to twice the number of Young tableaux of a truncated shifted staircase shape.

Using previous results concerning the rank two and rank three cases, all connected simply connected Cartan schemes for which the real roots form a finite irreducible root system of arbitrary rank are determined. As a consequence one obtains the list of all crystallographic arrangements, a large subclass of the class of simplicial hyperplane arrangements. Supposing that the rank is at least three, the classification yields Cartan schemes of type $A$ and $B$, an infinite family of series involving the types $C$ and $D$, and $74$ sporadic examples.

We construct bundles $E_k(\A,\F) \to M$ over the complement $M$ of a complex hyperplane arrangement \A, depending on an integer $k \geq 1$ and a set $\F=\{f_1, \ldots, f_μ\}$ of continuous functions $f_i \colon M \to \C$ whose differences are nonzero on $M$, generalizing the configuration space bundles arising in the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation of the pure braid group. We display such families \F\ for rank two arrangements, reflection arrangements of types $A_\ell$, $B_\ell$, $D_\ell$, $F_4$, and for arrangements supporting multinet structures with three classes, with the resulting bundles having nontrivial monodromy around each hyperplane. The construction extends to arbitrary arrangements by pulling back these bundles along products of inclusions arising from subarrangements of these types.
We then consider the faithfulness of the resulting representations of the arrangement group $π_1(M)$. We describe the kernel of the product $ρ_\X \colon G \to \prod_{S \in \X} G_S$ of homomorphisms of a finitely-generated group $G$ onto quotient groups $G_S$ determined by a family \X\ of subsets of a fixed set of generators of $G$, extending a result of T.~Stanford about Brunnian braids. When the projections $G \to G_S$ split in a compatible way, we show the image of $ρ_\X$ is normal with free abelian quotient, and identify the cohomological finiteness type of $G$. These results apply to some well-studied arrangements, implying several qualitative and residual properties of $π_1(M)$, including an alternate proof of a result of Artal, Cogolludo, and Matei on arrangement groups and Bestvina-Brady groups, and a dichotomy for a decomposable arrangement \A: either $π_1(M)$ has a conjugation-free presentation or it is not residually nilpotent.

We give a combinatorial characterization of isotropic subspaces in the Orlik- Solomon algebra of a hyperplane arrangement in terms of decorations of its intersection lattice. We then use this characterization to prove a result that relates these isotropic subspaces with linear systems supported on the arrangement, for arrangements with isolated non-normal crossings of a particular form.

In 2003, Haglund's {\sf bounce} statistic gave the first combinatorial interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers and the Hilbert series of diagonal harmonics. In this paper we propose a new combinatorial interpretation in terms of the affine Weyl group of type $A$. In particular, we define two statistics on affine permutations; one in terms of the Shi hyperplane arrangement, and one in terms of a new arrangement - which we call the Ish arrangement. We prove that our statistics are equivalent to the {\sf area'} and {\sf bounce} statistics of Haglund and Loehr. In this setting, we observe that {\sf bounce} is naturally expressed as a statistic on the root lattice. We extend our statistics in two directions: to "extended" Shi arrangements and to the bounded chambers of these arrangements. This leads to a (conjectural) combinatorial interpretation for all integral powers of the Bergeron-Garsia nabla operator applied to the elementary symmetric functions.

Given a polyhedral complex C with convex support, we characterize, by a local codimension-2 condition, polyhedral complexes that coarsen C. The proof of the characterization draws upon a surprising general shortcut for showing that a collection of polyhedra is a polyhedral complex and upon a property of hyperplane arrangements which is equivalent, for Coxeter arrangements, to Tits' solution to the Word Problem. The motivating special case, the case where C is a complete fan, generalizes a result of Morton, Pachter, Shiu, Sturmfels, and Wienand that equates convex rank tests with semigraphoids. The proof of the main result also implies a special case of Tietze's convexity theorem. We also prove oriented matroid versions of our results, obtaining, as a byproduct, an oriented matroid version of Tietze's convexity theorem.

We describe dualities and complexes of logarithmic forms and differentials for central affine and corresponding projective arrangements. We generalize the Borel-Serre formula from vector bundles to sheaves on projective d-space with locally free resolutions of length one. Combining these results we present a generalization of a formula due to Mustata and Schenck, relating the Poincare polynomial of an arrangement in projective 3-space (or a locally tame arrangement in projective d-space with zero-dimensional non-free locus) to the total Chern polynomial of its sheaf of logarithmic 1-forms.

Each irreducible component of the first resonance variety of a hyperplane arrangement naturally determines a codimension one foliation on the ambient space. The superposition of these foliations define what we call the resonance web of the arrangement. In this paper we initiate the study of these objects with emphasis on their spaces of abelian relations.

We extend properties of the weak order on finite Coxeter groups to Weyl groupoids admitting a finite root system. In particular, we determine the topological structure of intervals with respect to weak order, and show that the set of morphisms with fixed target object forms an ortho-complemented meet semilattice. We define the Coxeter complex of a Weyl groupoid with finite root system and show that it coincides with the triangulation of a sphere cut out by a simplicial hyperplane arrangement. As a consequence, one obtains an algebraic interpretation of many hyperplane arrangements that are not reflection arrangements.
Chamber Structure of Double Hurwitz numbers

Double Hurwitz numbers count covers of the projective line by genus g curves with assigned ramification profiles over 0 and infinity, and simple ramification over a fixed branch divisor. Goulden, Jackson and Vakil have shown double Hurwitz numbers are piecewise polynomial in the orders of ramification, and Shadrin, Shapiro and Vainshtein have determined the chamber structure and wall crossing formulas for g=0. This paper gives a unified approach to these results and strengthens them in several ways --- the most important being the extension of the results of Shapiro, Shadrin and Vainshtein to arbitrary genus. The main tool is the authors' previous work expressing double Hurwitz number as a sum over certain labeled graphs. We identify the labels of the graphs with lattice points in the chambers of certain hyperplane arrangements, which are well known to give rise to piecewise polynomial functions. Our understanding of the wall crossing for these functions builds on the work of Varchenko, and could have broader applications.

Generalizing a result of Yoshinaga in dimension 3, we show that a central hyperplane arrangement in 4-space is free exactly if its restriction with multiplicities to a fixed hyperplane of the arrangement is free and its reduced characteristic polynomial equals the characteristic polynomial of this restriction. We show that the same statement holds true in any dimension when imposing certain tameness hypotheses.

The purpose of this paper is applying minimality of hyperplane arrangements to local system cohomology groups. It is well known that twisted cohomology groups with coefficients in a generic rank one local system vanish except in the top degree, and bounded chambers form a basis of the remaining cohomology group. We determine precisely when this phenomenon happens for two-dimensional arrangements.

We prove that for any finite real hyperplane arrangement the average projection volumes of the maximal cones is given by the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of the arrangement. This settles the conjecture of Drton and Klivans that this held for all finite real reflection arrangements. The methods used are geometric and combinatorial. As a consequence we determine that the angle sums of a zonotope are given by the characteristic polynomial of the order dual of the intersection lattice of the arrangement.
An elementary chromatic reduction for gain graphs and special hyperplane arrangements

A gain graph is a graph whose edges are labelled invertibly by "gains" from a group. "Switching" is a transformation of gain graphs that generalizes conjugation in a group. A "weak chromatic function" of gain graphs with gains in a fixed group satisfies three laws: deletion-contraction for links with neutral gain, invariance under switching, and nullity on graphs with a neutral loop. The laws lead to the "weak chromatic group" of gain graphs, which is the universal domain for weak chromatic functions. We find expressions, valid in that group, for a gain graph in terms of minors without neutral-gain edges, or with added complete neutral-gain subgraphs, that generalize the expression of an ordinary chromatic polynomial in terms of monomials or falling factorials. These expressions imply relations for chromatic functions of gain graphs.
We apply our relations to some special integral gain graphs including those that correspond to the Shi, Linial, and Catalan arrangements, thereby obtaining new evaluations of and new ways to calculate the zero-free chromatic polynomial and the integral and modular chromatic functions of these gain graphs, hence the characteristic polynomials and hypercubical lattice-point counting functions of the arrangements. We also calculate the total chromatic polynomial of any gain graph and especially of the Catalan, Shi, and Linial gain graphs.
