Gröbner basis and Krull dimension of Lovász-Saks-Sherijver ideal associated to a tree
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $n$ be a positive integer. Let $Γ=([n], E)$ be a simple graph, where $[n]=\{1,\ldots, n\}$. If $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n, y_1, \ldots, y_n]$ is a polynomial ring, then the graded ideal \[ L_Γ^\mathbb{K}(2) = \left( x_{i}x_{j} + y_{i}y_{j} \colon \quad \{i, j\} \in E(Γ)\right) \subset S,\] is called the Lovász-Saks-Schrijver ideal, LSS-ideal for short, of $Γ$ with respect to $\mathbb{K}$. In the present paper, we compute a Gröbner basis of this ideal with respect to lexicographic ordering induced by $x_1>\cdots>x_n>y_1>\cdots>y_n$ when $Γ=T$ is a tree. As a result, we show that it is independent of the choice of the ground field $\mathbb{K}$ and compute the Hilbert series of $L_T^\mathbb{K}(2)$. Finally, we present concrete combinatorial formulas to obtain the Krull dimension of $S/L_T^\mathbb{K}(2)$ as well as lower and upper bounds for Krull dimension.
Classification of lattice triangles by their two smallest widths
We introduce the notion of the second lattice width of a lattice polytope and use this to classify lattice triangles by their width and second width. This is equivalent to classifying lattice triangles contained in a given rectangle (and no smaller rectangle) up to affine equivalence. Using this classification we investigate the automorphism groups and Ehrhart theory of lattice triangles. We also show that the sequence counting lattice triangles contained in dilations of the unit square has generating function equal to the Hilbert series of a degree 8 hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}(1,1,1,2,2,2)$.

For a nonnegative integer $p$, we give explicit formulas for the $p$-Frobenius number and the $p$-genus of generalized Fibonacci numerical semigroups. Here, the $p$-numerical semigroup $S_p$ is defined as the set of integers whose nonnegative integral linear combinations of given positive integers $a_1,a_2,\dots,a_k$ are expressed more than $p$ ways. When $p=0$, $S_0$ with the $0$-Frobenius number and the $0$-genus is the original numerical semigroup with the Frobenius number and the genus. In this paper, we consider the $p$-numerical semigroup involving Jacobsthal polynomials, which include Fibonacci numbers as special cases. We can also treat with the Jacobsthal-Lucas polynomials, including Lucas numbers accordingly. One of the applications on the $p$-Hilbert series is mentioned.

In the context of the shuffle theorem, many classical integer sequences appear with a natural refinement by two statistics $q$ and $t$: for example the Catalan and Schröder numbers. In particular, the bigraded Hilbert series of diagonal harmonics is a $q,t$-analog of $(n+1)^{n-1}$ (and can be written in terms of symmetric functions via the nabla operator). The motivation for this work is the observation that at $q=-1$, this $q,t$-analog becomes a $t$-analog of Euler numbers, a famous integer sequence that counts alternating permutations. We prove this observation via a more general statement, that involves the Delta operator on symmetric functions (on one side), and new combinatorial statistics on permutations involving peaks and valleys (on the other side). An important tool are the schedule numbers of a parking function first introduced by Hicks; and expanded upon by Haglund and Sergel. Other empirical observation suggest that nonnegativity at $q=-1$ holds in far greater generality.

Let $Ω_n$ be the ring of polynomial-valued holomorphic differential forms on complex $n$-space, referred to in physics as the superspace ring of rank $n$. The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts diagonally on $Ω_n$ by permuting commuting and anticommuting generators simultaneously. We let $SI_n \subseteq Ω_n$ be the ideal generated by $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term and study the quotient $SR_n = Ω_n / SI_n$ of superspace by this ideal. We calculate the doubly-graded Hilbert series of $SR_n$ and prove an `operator theorem' which characterizes the harmonic space $SH_n \subseteq Ω_n$ attached to $SR_n$ in terms of the Vandermonde determinant and certain differential operators. Our methods employ commutative algebra results which were used in the study of Hessenberg varieties. Our results prove conjectures of N. Bergeron, Li, Machacek, Sulzgruber, Swanson, Wallach, and Zabrocki.
Rational Normal Curves, Chip Firing and Free Resolutions
We study rational normal curves via a connection to the chip firing game. A key technique, introduced in this article, is to interpret the defining ideal of the rational normal curve as an ideal associated to a generalisation of a cycle graph called a parcycle. This association allows us to study rational normal curves by combinatorial methods. Given any Cohen-Macaulay initial monomial ideal of the rational normal curve, we explicitly construct (via this association) a corresponding Gröbner degeneration and an explicit combinatorial minimal free resolution of this Gröbner degeneration. Applications include minimal cellular resolutions for each Cohen-Macaulay initial monomial ideal of the rational normal curve, explicit combinatorial formulas for Hilbert series of certain lex-segment ideals and a combinatorial perspective on the Eagon-Northcott complex associated to the rational normal curve.

In this article, we study Hilbert Series of non-Cohen-Maculay tangent cones for some 4-generated pseudo symmetric monomial curves. We show that the Hilbert Function is nondecreasing by explicitly computing it. We also compute standard bases of these toric ideals.
Stembridge codes and Chow rings
It is well known that the Eulerian polynomial is the Hilbert series of the cohomology of the permutohedral variety. We answer a question of Stembridge on finding a geometric explanation of the \emph{permutation representation} this cohomology carries. Our explanation involves an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-equivariant bijection between a basis for the Chow ring of the Boolean matroid and codes introduced by Stembridge. There are analogous results for the stellohedral variety. We provide a geometric explanation of the permutation representation that its cohomology carries. This involves the augmented Chow ring of a matroid introduced by Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot and Wang. Along the way, we also obtain some new results on augmented Chow rings.

We study the Hilbert series of four objects arising in the Chow-theoretic and Kazhdan-Lusztig framework of matroids. These are, respectively, the Hilbert series of the Chow ring, the augmented Chow ring, the intersection cohomology module, and its stalk at the empty flat. We develop a parallelism between the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid and the Hilbert series of its Chow ring. This extends to a parallelism between the $Z$-polynomial of a matroid and the Hilbert series of its augmented Chow ring. This suggests to bring ideas from one framework to the other. Our two main motivations are the real-rootedness conjecture for all of these polynomials, and the problem of computing them. We provide several intrinsic definitions of these invariants; also, by leveraging that they are valuations under matroid polytope subdivisions, we deduce a fast way for computing them for a large class of matroids. Uniform matroids are a case of combinatorial interest; we link the resulting polynomials with certain real-rooted families such as the (binomial) Eulerian polynomials, and we settle a conjecture of Hameister, Rao, and Simpson. Furthermore, we prove the real-rootedness of the Hilbert series of the augmented Chow rings of uniform matroids via a result of Haglund and Zhang; and in addition, we prove a version of a conjecture of Gedeon in the Chow setting: uniform matroids maximize coefficient-wisely these polynomials for matroids with fixed rank and size. By relying on the nonnegativity of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and the semi-small decompositions of Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot, and Wang, we strengthen the unimodality of the Hilbert series of Chow rings, augmented Chow rings, and intersection cohomologies to $γ$-positivity, a property for palindromic polynomials that lies between unimodality and real-rootedness; this settles a conjecture of Ferroni, Nasr, and Vecchi.

We give a combinatorial description of local cohomology modules of a graded module over a semigroup ring, with support at the graded maximal ideal. This combinatorial framework yields Hochster-type formulas for the Hilbert series of such local cohomology modules in terms of the homology of finitely many polyhedral cell complexes. A Cohen--Macaulay criterion immediately follows. We also provide an alternative proof of a result of [18] characterizing Cohen--Macaulay affine semigroup rings.
Exponential Hilbert series and hierarchical log-linear models
Consider a hierarchical log-linear model, given by a simplicial complex, $Γ$, and integer matrix $A_Γ$. We give a new characterization of the rank of $A_Γ$ given by a logarithmic transformation on the exponential Hilbert series of $Γ$. We show that, if each random variable in $X$ has the same number of possible outcomes, then this formula reduces to a simple description in terms of the face vector of $Γ$. If $Γ$ further satisfies the Dehn-Sommerville relations, then we give an exceptionally simple formula for computing the rank of $A_Γ$, and thus the dimension and the number of degrees of freedom of the model.

Let $R=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$, a graded algebra $S=R/I$ satisfies $N_{k,p}$ if $I$ is generated in degree $k$, and the graded minimal resolution is linear the first $p$ steps, and the $k$-index of $S$ is the largest $p$ such that $S$ satisfies $N_{k,p}$. Eisenbud and Goto have shown that for any graded ring $R/I$, then $R/I_{\geq k}$, where $I_{\geq k}=I\cap M^k$ and $M=(x_1,\dots,x_n)$, has a $k$-linear resolution (satisfies $N_{k,p}$ for all $p$) if $k\gg0$. For a squarefree monomial ideal $I$, we are here interested in the ideal $I_k$ which is the squarefree part of $I_{\geq k}$. The ideal $I$ is, via Stanley-Reisner correspondence, associated to a simplicial complex $Δ_I$. In this case, all Betti numbers of $R/I_k$ for $k>\min\{\text{deg}(u)\mid u\in I\}$, which of course is a much finer invariant than the index, can be determined from the Betti diagram of $R/I$ and the $f$-vector of $Δ_I$. We compare our results with the corresponding statements for $I_{\ge k}$. (Here $I$ is an arbitrary graded ideal.) In this case we show that the Betti numbers of $R/I_{\ge k}$ can be determined from the Betti numbers of $R/I$ and the Hilbert series of $R/I_{\ge k}$.
Matroidal Cayley-Bacharach and independence/dependence of geometric properties of matroids
We consider the relationship between a matroidal analogue of the degree $a$ Cayley-Bacharach property (finite sets of points failing to impose independent conditions on degree $a$ hypersurfaces) and geometric properties of matroids. If the matroid polytopes in question are nestohedra, we show that the minimal degree matroidal Cayley-Bacharach property denoted $MCB(a)$ is determined by the structure of the building sets used to construct them. This analysis also applies for other degrees $a$. Also, it does not seem to affect the combinatorial equivalence class of the matroid polytope.
However, there are close connections to minimal nontrivial degrees $a$ and the geometry of the matroids in question for paving matroids (which are conjecturally generic among matroids of a given rank) and matroids constructed out of supersolvable hyperplane arrangements. The case of paving matroids is still related to with properties of building sets since it is closely connected to (Hilbert series of) Chow rings of matroids, which are combinatorial models of the cohomology of wonderful compactifications. Finally, our analysis of supersolvable line and hyperplane arrangements give a family of matroids which are natrually related to independence conditions imposed by points one plane curves or can be analyzed recursively.
On the consistency of score sheets of a round-robin football tournament
In this paper we introduce the submonoids $\mathscr{R}_n$, resp. $\mathscr{C}_n$, of the monoid $\mathscr{M}_n$ of ordered score sheets of a robin-round tournament played by $n$ teams for which the order is preserved after the leader team is disqualified, resp. all principal submatrices preserve the given ordering. We study (using both theoretical and computational methods) the most important invariants of these monoids, namely the Hilbert basis, the multiplicity, the Hilbert series and the Hilbert function. In particular we give a general description of the Hilbert basis of $\mathscr{R}_n$ and we show that $\mathscr{C}_n$ is Gorenstein for $n>2$.

We apply the method of orbit harmonics to the set of break divisors and orientable divisors on graphs to obtain the central and external zonotopal algebras respectively. We then relate a construction of Efimov in the context of cohomological Hall algebras to the central zonotopal algebra of a graph $G_{Q,γ}$ constructed from a symmetric quiver $Q$ with enough loops and a dimension vector $γ$. This provides a concrete combinatorial perspective on the former work, allowing us to identify the quantum Donaldson-Thomas invariants as the Hilbert series of the space of $S_γ$-invariants of the Postnikov-Shapiro slim subgraph space attached to $G_{Q,γ}$. The connection with orbit harmonics in turn allows us to give a manifestly nonnegative combinatorial interpretation to numerical Donaldson-Thomas invariants as the number of $S_γ$-orbits under the permutation action on the set of break divisors on $G_{Q,γ}$. We conclude with several representation-theoretic consequences, whose combinatorial ramifications may be of independent interest.

We study the ring of quasisymmetric polynomials in $n$ anticommuting (fermionic) variables. Let $R_n$ denote the polynomials in $n$ anticommuting variables. The main results of this paper show the following interesting facts about quasisymmetric polynomials in anticommuting variables:
(1) The quasisymmetric polynomials in $R_n$ form a commutative sub-algebra of $R_n$.
(2) There is a basis of the quotient of $R_n$ by the ideal $I_n$ generated by the quasisymmetric polynomials in $R_n$ that is indexed by ballot sequences. The Hilbert series of the quotient is given by
$$ \text{Hilb}_{R_n/I_n}(q) = \sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor{n/2}\rfloor} f^{(n-k,k)} q^k\,,$$ where $f^{(n-k,k)}$ is the number of standard tableaux of shape $(n-k,k)$.
(3) There is a basis of the ideal generated by quasisymmetric polynomials that is indexed by sequences that break the ballot condition

Stirling numbers, which count partitions of a set and permutations in the symmetric group, have found extensive application in combinatorics, geometry, and algebra. We study analogues and q-analogues of these numbers corresponding to the Coxeter group of type B. In particular, we show how they are related to complete homogeneous and elementary symmetric polynomials; demonstrate how they q-count signed partitions and permutations; compute their ordinary, exponential, and q-exponential generating functions; and prove various identities about them. Ordered analogues of the q-Stirling numbers of the second kind have recently appeared in conjectures of Zabrocki and of Swanson--Wallach concerning the Hilbert series of certain super coinvariant algebras. We provide conjectural bases for these algebras and show that they have the correct Hilbert series.

Let $G$ be a complex classical group, and let $V$ be its defining representation (possibly plus a copy of the dual). A foundational problem in classical invariant theory is to write down generators and relations for the ring of $G$-invariant polynomial functions on the space $\mathcal{P}^m(V)$ of degree-$m$ homogeneous polynomial functions on $V$. In this paper, we replace $\mathcal{P}^m(V)$ with the full polynomial algebra $\mathcal{P}(V)$. As a result, the invariant ring is no longer finitely generated. Hence instead of seeking generators, we aim to write down linear bases for bigraded components. Indeed, when $G$ is of sufficiently high rank, we realize these bases as sets of graphs with prescribed number of vertices and edges. When the rank of $G$ is small, there arise complicated linear dependencies among the graphs, but we remedy this setback via representation theory: in particular, we determine the dimension of an arbitrary component in terms of branching multiplicities from the general linear group to the symmetric group. We thereby obtain an expression for the bigraded Hilbert series of the ring of invariants on $\mathcal{P}(V)$. We conclude with examples using our graphical notation, several of which recover classical results.
Deformed graphical zonotopal algebras
We study certain filtered deformations of the external zonotopal algebra of a given graph parametrized by univariate polynomials. We establish some general properties of these algebras, compute their Hilbert series for a number of graphs using Macaulay2, and formulate several conjectures.
Shi arrangements restricted to Weyl cones

We consider the restrictions of Shi arrangements to Weyl cones, their relations to antichains in the root poset, and their intersection posets. For any Weyl cone, we provide bijections between regions, flats intersecting the cone, and antichains of a naturally-defined subposet of the root poset. This gives a refinement of the parking function numbers via the Poincaré polynomials of the intersection posets of all Weyl cones. Finally, we interpret these Poincaré polynomials as the Hilbert series of three isomorphic graded rings. One of these rings arises from the Varchenko-Gel'fand ring, another is the coordinate ring of the vertices of the order polytope of a subposet of the root poset, and the third is purely combinatorial.
