The Mathieu group $M_{12}$ and its pseudogroup extension $M_{13}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a construction of the Mathieu group $M_{12}$ using a game reminiscent of Loyd's ``15-puzzle''. The elements of $M_{12}$ are realized as permutations on~12 of the~13 points of the finite projective plane of order~3. There is a natural extension to a ``pseudogroup'' $M_{13}$ acting on all~13 points, which exhibits a limited form of sextuple transitivity. Another corollary of the construction is a metric, akin to that induced by a Cayley graph, on both $M_{12}$ and $M_{13}$. We develop these results, and extend them to the double covers and automorphism groups of $M_{12}$ and $M_{13}$, using the ternary Golay code and $12 \x 12$ Hadamard matrices. In addition, we use experimental data on the quasi-Cayley metric to gain some insight into the structure of these groups and pseudogroups.

Hamiltonicity of Cubic Cayley Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Following a problem posed by Lovász in 1969, it is believed that every connected vertex-transitive graph has a Hamilton path. This is shown here to be true for cubic Cayley graphs arising from groups having a $(2,s,3)$-presentation, that is, for groups $G=\la a,b| a^2=1, b^s=1, (ab)^3=1, etc. \ra$ generated by an involution $a$ and an element $b$ of order $s\geq3$ such that their product $ab$ has order 3. More precisely, it is shown that the Cayley graph $X=Cay(G,\{a,b,b^{-1}\})$ has a Hamilton cycle when $|G|$ (and thus $s$) is congruent to 2 modulo 4, and has a long cycle missing only two vertices (and thus necessarily a Hamilton path) when $|G|$ is congruent to 0 modulo 4.

Equi-distribution over Descent Classes of the Hyperoctahedral Group
Published • View Publication • BIB
A classical result of MacMahon shows that the length function and the major index are equi-distributed over the symmetric group. Foata and Schützenberger gave a remarkable refinement and proved that these parameters are equi-distributed over inverse descent classes, implying bivariate equi-distribution identities. Type $B$ analogues of these results, refinements and consequences are given in this paper.

Permutation representations of the braid group commutator subgroup
We study the representations of the commutator subgroup of the braid group with n strands in the symmetric group of degree r. Motivated by some experimental results, we conjecture that for n>r, every such representation is trivial.

Stein's Method and Random Character Ratios
Published • View Publication • BIB
Stein's method is used to prove limit theorems for random character ratios. Tools are developed for four types of structures: finite groups, Gelfand pairs, twisted Gelfand pairs, and association schemes. As one example an error term is obtained for a central limit theorem of Kerov on the spectrum of the Cayley graph of the symmetric group generated by i-cycles, or equivalently for the character ratio of a Plancherel distributed representation on an i-cycle. Other main examples include an error term for a central limit theorem of Ivanov on character ratios of random projective representations of the symmetric group, and a new central limit theorem for the spectrum of certain graphs whose vertices are the set of perfect matchings on 2n symbols. The error terms in the resulting limit theorems are typically O(n^{-1/4}) or better. The results are obtained with remarkably little information: a character formula for a single representation close to the trivial representation and estimates on two step transition probabilities of a random walk. Although the limit theorems stated in this paper are all for the case of normal approximation, many of the tools developed are quite general. Indeed, both the construction of an exchangeable pair used for Stein's method and lemmas computing certain moments are useful for arbitrary distributional approximation.

Critical pairs in abelian groups and Kemperman's structure theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
A well-known result by Kemperman describes the structure of those pairs (A,B) of finite subsets of an abelian group satisfying |A+B|\le|A|+|B|-1. We establish a description which is, in a sense, dual to Kemperman's, and as an application sharpen several results due to Deshouillers, Hamidoune, Hennecart, and Plagne.

Bases for certain cohomology representations of the symmetric group
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 24 (2006), no. 4, pp. 361-390. • View Publication • BIB
We give a combinatorial description (including explicit differential-form bases) for the cohomology groups of the space of n distinct nonzero complex numbers, with coefficients in rank-one local systems which are of finite monodromy around the coordinate hyperplanes and trivial monodromy around all other hyperplanes. In the case where the local system is equivariant for the symmetric group, we write the cohomology groups as direct sums of inductions of one-dimensional characters of subgroups. This relies on an equivariant description of the Orlik-Solomon algebras of full monomial reflection groups (wreath products of the symmetric group with a cyclic group). The combinatorial models involved are certain representations of these wreath products which possess bases indexed by labelled trees.

The combinatorics of the Baer-Specker group
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics 168 (2008), 125-151 • View Publication • BIB
Denote the integers by Z and the positive integers by N. The groups Z^k (k a natural number) are discrete, and the classification up to isomorphism of their (topological) subgroups is trivial. But already for the countably infinite power Z^N of Z, the situation is different. Here the product topology is nontrivial, and the subgroups of Z^N make a rich source of examples of non-isomorphic topological groups. Z^N is the Baer-Specker group. We study subgroups of the Baer-Specker group which possess group theoretic properties analogous to properties introduced by Menger (1924), Hurewicz (1925), Rothberger (1938), and Scheepers (1996). The studied properties were introduced independently by Kočinac and Okunev. We obtain purely combinatorial characterizations of these properties, and combine them with other techniques to solve several questions of Babinkostova, Kočinac, and Scheepers.

On Expected Factors in Reduced Decompositions in Type B
Published • View Publication • BIB
The expected number of Yang-Baxter moves appearing in a reduced decomposition of the longest element of the Coxeter group of type B_n is computed to be 2-4/n. For the same element, the expected number of 0101 or 1010 factors appearing in a reduced decomposition is 2/(n^2-2).

Schubert classes in the equivariant cohomology of the Lagrangian Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $LG_n$ denote the Lagrangian Grassmannian parametrizing maximal isotropic (Lagrangian) subspaces of a fixed symplectic vector space of dimension $2n.$ For each strict partition $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_k)$ with $λ_1\leq n$ there is a Schubert variety $X(λ).$ Let $T$ denote a maximal torus of the symplectic group acting on $LG_n.$ Consider the $T$-equivariant cohomology of $LG_n$ and the $T$-equivariant fundamental class $σ(λ)$ of $X(λ).$ The main result of the present paper is an explicit formula for the restriction of the class $σ(λ)$ to any torus fixed point. The formula is written in terms of factorial analogue of the Schur $Q$-function, introduced by Ivanov. As a corollary to the restriction formula, we obtain an equivariant version of the Giambelli-type formula for $LG_n.$ As another consequence of the main result, we obtained a presentation of the ring $H_T^*(LG_n).$

On abelian $(2^{2m+1}(2^{m-1}+1), 2^m(2^m+1), 2^m)$-difference sets
In this paper we prove that an abelian group contains $(2^{2m+1}(2^{m-1}+1), 2^m(2^m+1), 2^m)$-difference sets with $m\geqslant 3$ if and only if it contains an elementary abelian 2-group of order $2^{2m}$. Our proof shows that the method of constructing such difference sets is essentially unique.
Multiple polylogarithms, polygons, trees and algebraic cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct algebraic cycles in Bloch's cubical cycle group which correspond to multiple polylogarithms with generic arguments. Moreover, we construct out of them a Hopf subalgebra in the Bloch-Kriz cycle Hopf algebra. In the process, we are led to other Hopf algebras built from trees and polygons, which are mapped to the latter. We relate the coproducts to the one for Goncharov's motivic multiple polylogarithms and to the Connes-Kreimer coproduct on plane trees and produce the associated Hodge realization for polygons.

We prove a conjecture of F. Chapoton relating certain enumerative invariants of (a) the cluster complex associated by S. Fomin and A. Zelevinsky to a finite root system and (b) the lattice of noncrossing partitions associated to the corresponding finite real reflection group.

Enriched $P$-partitions and peak algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop a more general view of Stembridge's enriched $P$-partitions and use this theory to outline the structure of peak algebras for the symmetric group and the hyperoctahedral group. Initially we focus on commutative peak algebras, spanned by sums of permutations with the same number of peaks, where we consider several variations on the definition of "peak." Whereas Stembridge's enriched $P$-partitions are related to quasisymmetric functions (the dual coalgebra of Solomon's type A descent algebra), our generalized enriched $P$-partitions are related to type B quasisymmetric functions (the dual coalgebra of Solomon's type B descent algebra). Using these functions, we move on to explore (non-commutative) peak algebras spanned by sums of permutations with the same set of peaks. While some of these algebras have been studied before, our approach gives explicit structure constants with a combinatorial description.

On the shape of Bruhat intervals
Let (W,S) be a crystallographic Coxeter group (this includes all finite and affine Weyl groups), and J a subset of S. Let $W^J$ denote the set of minimal coset representatives modulo the parabolic subgroup $W_J$. For w in $W^J$, let $f^{w,J}_{i}$ denote the number of elements of length i below w in Bruhat order on $W^J$ (notation simplified to $f^{w}_{i}$ in the case when J=S). We show that $f^{w,J}_{i}$ is less than or equal to $f^{w,J}_{j}$ when i < j and j is less than or equal to the length of w minus i. Furthermore, we express when an initial and final interval of the f's is symmetric around the middle in terms of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. It is also shown that if W is finite then the sequence of f's cannot grow too rapidly. Som result mirroring our first result are obtaind, again in the finite case. The proofs rely for the most part on properties of the cohomology of Kac-Moody Schubert varieties.
The $\hat W$-orbit of $ρ$, Kostant's formula for powers of the Euler product and affine Weyl groups as permutations of Z
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 208 (2007), no. 3, 1103--1119. • View Publication • BIB
Let an affine Weyl group $\hat W$ act as a group of affine transformations on a real vector space V. We analyze the $\hat W$-orbit of a regular element in V and deduce applications to Kostant's formula for powers of the Euler product and to the representations of $\hat W$ as permutations of the integers.

Lattices generated by skeletons of reflexive polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Lattices generated by lattice points in skeletons of reflexive polytopes are essential in determining the fundamental group and integral cohomology of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. Here we prove that the lattice generated by all lattice points in a reflexive polytope is already generated by lattice points in codimension two faces. This answers a question of J. Morgan.

Extending Fine sequences: a link with forbidden patterns
We propose a natural, bivariate, generalization of the nonsingular similarity relations considered by T. Fine. We also provide an enumeration formulae and a generating tree for those relations. The latter allow us to give a new bijection between 321-avoiding derangements and Fine sequences. Moreover, we establish that two special cases are in a one-to-one correspondence with subsets of permutations characterized by forbidden subsequences on the symmetrical group. All our results are established using the technique of generating tree, thus giving entirely bijective proofs.
