Combinatorics of orbit configuration spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
From a group action on a space, define a variant of the configuration space by insisting that no two points inhabit the same orbit. When the action is almost free, this "orbit configuration space" is the complement of an arrangement of subvarieties inside the cartesian product, and we use this structure to study its topology. We give an abstract combinatorial description of its poset of layers (connected components of intersections from the arrangement) which turns out to be of much independent interest as a generalization of partition and Dowling lattices. The close relationship to these classical posets is then exploited to give explicit cohomological calculations.

The orbit algebra of a permutation group with polynomial profile is Cohen-Macaulay
Let $G$ be a group of permutations of a denumerable set $E$. The profile of $G$ is the function $φ_G$ which counts, for each $n$, the (possibly infinite) number $φ_G(n)$ of orbits of $G$ acting on the $n$-subsets of $E$. Counting functions arising this way, and their associated generating series, form a rich yet apparently strongly constrained class. In particular, Cameron conjectured in the late seventies that, whenever $φ_G(n)$ is bounded by a polynomial, it is asymptotically equivalent to a polynomial. In 1985, Macpherson further asked if the orbit algebra of $G$ - a graded commutative algebra invented by Cameron and whose Hilbert function is $φ_G$ - is finitely generated. In this paper, we announce a proof of a stronger statement: the orbit algebra is Cohen-Macaulay. The generating series of the profile is a rational fraction whose numerator has positive coefficients and denominator admits a combinatorial description. The proof uses classical techniques from group actions, commutative algebra, and invariant theory; it steps towards a classification of ages of permutation groups with profile bounded by a polynomial.

Derangement action digraphs and graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the family of \emph{derangement action digraphs}, which are a subfamily of the group action graphs introduced in [Fred Annexstein, Marc Baumslag, and Arnold L. Rosenberg, Group action graphs and parallel architectures, \emph{SIAM J. Comput.} 19 (1990), no. 3, 544--569]. For any non-empty set $X$ and a non-empty subset $S$ of $\Der(X)$, the set of derangments of $X$, we define the derangement action digraph $\rm\overrightarrow{DA}(X;S)$ to have vertex set $X$, and an arc from $x$ to $y$ if and only if $y=x^s$ for some $s\in S$. In common with Cayley graphs and digraphs, derangement action digraphs may be useful to model networks as the same routing and communication scheme can be implemented at each vertex. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions on $S$ under which $\rm\overrightarrow{DA}(X;S)$ may be viewed as a simple graph of valency $|S|$, and we call such graphs derangement action graphs. Also we investigate the structural and symmetry properties of these digraphs and graphs. Several open problems are posed and many examples are given.

Quadratic and symmetric bilinear forms over finite fields and their association schemes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathscr{Q}(m,q)$ and $\mathscr{S}(m,q)$ be the sets of quadratic forms and symmetric bilinear forms on an $m$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$, respectively. The orbits of $\mathscr{Q}(m,q)$ and $\mathscr{S}(m,q)$ under a natural group action induce two translation association schemes, which are known to be dual to each other. We give explicit expressions for the eigenvalues of these association schemes in terms of linear combinations of generalised Krawtchouk polynomials, generalising earlier results for odd $q$ to the more difficult case when $q$ is even. We then study $d$-codes in these schemes, namely subsets $X$ of $\mathscr{Q}(m,q)$ or $\mathscr{S}(m,q)$ with the property that, for all distinct $A,B\in X$, the rank of $A-B$ is at least $d$. We prove tight bounds on the size of $d$-codes and show that, when these bounds hold with equality, the inner distributions of the subsets are often uniquely determined by their parameters. We also discuss connections to classical error-correcting codes and show how the Hamming distance distribution of large classes of codes over $\mathbb{F}_q$ can be determined from the results of this paper.

Continuous Combinatorics of Abelian Group Actions
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper develops techniques which are used to answer a number of questions in the theory of equivalence relations generated by continuous actions of abelian groups. The methods center around the construction of certain specialized hyper-aperiodic elements, which produce compact subflows with useful properties. For example, we show that there is no continuous $3$-coloring of the Cayley graph on $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^2})$, the free part of the shift action of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ on $2^{\mathbb{Z}^2}$. With earlier work of the authors this computes the continuous chromatic number of $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^2})$ to be exactly $4$. Combined with marker arguments for the positive directions, our methods allow us to analyze continuous homomorphisms into graphs, and more generally equivariant maps into subshifts of finite type. We present a general construction of a finite set of "tiles" for $2^{\mathbb{Z}^n}$ (there are $12$ for $n=2$) such that questions about the existence of continuous homomorphisms into various structures reduce to finitary combinatorial questions about the tiles. This tile analysis is used to deduce a number of results about $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^n})$.

River Crossing Problems: Algebraic Approach
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider two river crossing problems, about jealous husbands and about missionaries and cannibals. The missionaries and cannibals problem arose a thousand years after the jealous husbands problem, although its solution had actually appeared several hundred years before its formulation. We apply an algebraic approach to study these problems, using a symmetry group action on the state set of the jealous husband problem; then category theory is used to describe the relationship between the two problems. Some historical issues are also touched, related to the fact that the missionaries and cannibals problem arose precisely when the group approach began to be widely spread and popularized. This is the approach that naturally connects both problems.

Gamma-positivity and partial gamma-positivity of descent-type polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study gamma-positivity of descent-type polynomials by introducing the change of context-free grammars method. We first present grammatical proofs of the gamma-positivity of the Eulerian polynomials, type B Eulerian polynomials, derangement polynomials, Narayana polynomials and type B Narayana polynomials. We then provide partial gamma-positive expansions for several multivariate polynomials associated to Stirling permutations, Legendre-Stirling permutations, Jacobi-Stirling permutations and type B derangements, and the recurrences for the partial gamma-coefficients of these expansions are also obtained. Moreover, we define variants of the Foata-Strehl group action which are used to give combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients of most of these partial gamma-positive expansions.

An $L^2$-identity and pinned distance problem
Published in Geom. Funct. Anal. 29 (2019), no. 1, 283-294 • View Publication • BIB
Let $μ$ be a Frostman measure on $E\subset\mathbb{R}^d$. The spherical average decay $$\int_{S^{d-1}}|\widehatμ(rω)|^2\,dω\lesssim r^{-β} $$ was originally used to attack Falconer distance conjecture, via Mattila's integral. In this paper we consider the pinned distance problem, a stronger version of Falconer distance problem, and show that spherical average decay implies the same dimensional threshold on both of them. In particular, with the best known spherical average estimates, we improve Peres-Schlag's result on pinned distance problem significantly. The idea is to reduce the pinned distance problem to an integral where spherical averages apply. The key ingredient is the following identity. Using a group action argument, we show that for any Schwartz function $f$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and any $x\in\mathbb{R}^d$, $$\int_0^\infty |ω_t*f(x)|^2\,t^{d-1}dt\,=\int_0^\infty|\widehat{ω_r}*f(x)|^2\,r^{d-1}dr,$$ where $ω_r$ is the normalized surface measure on $r S^{d-1}$. An interesting remark is that the right hand side can be easily seen equal to $$c_d\int\left|D_x^{-\frac{d-1}{2}}e^{-2πi t\sqrt{-Δ}}f(x)\right|^2\,dt=c_d'\int\left|D_x^{-\frac{d-2}{2}}e^{2πi tΔ}f(x)\right|^2\,dt.$$ An alternative derivation of Mattila's integral via group actions is also given in the Appendix.

The ascent-plateau statistics on Stirling permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, several variants of the ascent-plateau statistic are introduced, including flag ascent-plateau, double ascent and descent-plateau. We first study the flag ascent-plateau statistic on Stirling permutations by using context-free grammars. We then present a unified refinement of the ascent polynomials and the ascent-plateau polynomials. In particular, by using Foata and Strehl's group action, we prove two bistatistics over the set of Stirling permutations of order n are equidistributed.

A combinatorial approach to Rauzy-type dynamics II: the labelling method and a second proof of the KZB classification theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Rauzy-type dynamics are group actions on a collection of combinatorial objects. The first and best known example (the Rauzy dynamics) concerns an action on permutations, associated to interval exchange transformations (IET) for the Poincaré map on compact orientable translation surfaces. The equivalence classes on the objects induced by the group action have been classified by Kontsevich and Zorich, and by Boissy through methods involving both combinatorics algebraic geometry, topology and dynamical systems. Our first paper proposed an ad hoc combinatorial proof of this classification. In this paper we define a general method, called the labelling method, which allows one to classify Rauzy-type dynamics in a much more systematic way. We apply the method to the Rauzy dynamics and obtain a second combinatorial proof of the classification.

The Action of Young Subgroups on the Partition Complex
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the restrictions, the strict fixed points, and the strict quotients of the partition complex $|Π_n|$, which is the $Σ_n$-space attached to the poset of proper nontrivial partitions of the set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. We express the space of fixed points $|Π_n|^G$ in terms of subgroup posets for general $G\subset Σ_n$ and prove a formula for the restriction of $|Π_n|$ to Young subgroups $Σ_{n_1}\times \dots\times Σ_{n_k}$. Both results follow by applying a general method, proven with discrete Morse theory, for producing equivariant branching rules on lattices with group actions. We uncover surprising links between strict Young quotients of $|Π_n|$, commutative monoid spaces, and the cotangent fibre in derived algebraic geometry. These connections allow us to construct a cofibre sequence relating various strict quotients $|Π_n|^\diamond\wedge_{Σ_n} (S^\ell)^{\wedge n}$ and give a combinatorial proof of a splitting in derived algebraic geometry. Combining all our results, we decompose strict Young quotients of $|Π_n|$ in terms of "atoms" $|Π_d|^\diamond\wedge_{Σ_d} (S^\ell)^{\wedge d}$ for $\ell$ odd and compute their homology. We thereby also generalise Goerss' computation of the algebraic André-Quillen homology of trivial square-zero extensions from $\mathbb{F}_2$ to $\mathbb{F}_p$ for $p$ an odd prime.

Permutation Modules associated to the Hyperoctahedron and Group Actions
We investigate the permutation modules associated to the set of $k$-dimensional faces of the hyperoctahedron in dimension $n$, denoted $H^{n}.$ For any $k\leq n$ such a module can be defined over an arbitrary field $F$, it is called a face module of $H^{n}$ over $F.$ We describe a spectral decomposition of such face modules into submodules and show that these submodules are irreducible under the hyperoctahedral group $B_{n}.$ The same method can be used to describe the exact relationship between the face modules in any two dimensions $0\leq t\leq k\leq n.$ Applications of this technique include a rank formula for the rank of the incidence matrix of $t$-dimensional versus $k$-dimensional faces of $H^{n}$ and a characterization of $(t,k,\ell)$-designs on $H^{n}.$ We also prove an orbit theorem for subgroups of the hyperoctahedral group on the set of faces of $H^{n}.$ The decomposition method is elementary, mostly characteristic free and does not involve the representation theory of automorphism groups. It is therefore quite general and can be used to decompose permutation modules associated to other geometries.

Structural Relations of Symmetry among Players in Strategic Games
Published • View Publication • BIB
The notions of symmetry and anonymity in strategic games have been formalized in different ways in the literature. We propose a combinatorial framework to analyze these notions, using group actions. Then, the same framework is used to define partial symmetries in payoff matrices. With this purpose, we introduce the notion of the role a player plays with respect to another one, and combinatorial relations between roles are studied. Building on them, we define relations directly between players, which provide yet another characterization of structural symmetries in the payoff matrices of strategic games.

Rowmotion and Increasing Labeling Promotion
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, Volume 164, 2019, Pages 72-108 • View Publication • BIB
In 2012, N. Williams and the second author showed that on order ideals of ranked partially ordered sets (posets), rowmotion is conjugate to (and thus has the same orbit structure as) a different toggle group action, which in special cases is equivalent to promotion on linear extensions of posets constructed from two chains. In 2015, O. Pechenik and the first and second authors extended these results to show that increasing tableaux under K-promotion naturally corresponds to order ideals in a product of three chains under a toggle group action conjugate to rowmotion they called hyperplane promotion. In this paper, we generalize these results to the setting of arbitrary increasing labelings of any finite poset with given restrictions on the labels. We define a generalization of K-promotion in this setting and show it corresponds to a toggle group action we call toggle-promotion on order ideals of an associated poset. When the restrictions on labels are particularly nice (for example, specifying a global bound on all labels used), we show that toggle-promotion is conjugate to rowmotion. Additionally, we show that any poset that can be nicely embedded into a Cartesian product has a natural toggle-promotion action conjuate to rowmotion.

Rigidity of warped cones and coarse geometry of expanders
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the geometry of warped cones over free, minimal isometric group actions and related constructions of expander graphs. We prove a rigidity theorem for the coarse geometry of such warped cones: Namely, if a group has no abelian factors, then two such warped cones are quasi-isometric if and only if the actions are finite covers of conjugate actions. As a consequence, we produce continuous families of non-quasi-isometric expanders and superexpanders. The proof relies on the use of coarse topology for warped cones, such as a computation of their coarse fundamental groups.

Upper and lower bounds for rich lines in grids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove upper and lower bounds for the number of lines in general position that are rich in a Cartesian product point set. This disproves a conjecture of Solymosi and improves work of Elekes, Borenstein and Croot, and Amirkhanyan, Bush, Croot, and Pryby. The upper bounds are based on a version of the asymmetric Balog-Szemeredi-Gowers theorem for group actions combined with product theorems for the affine group. The lower bounds are based on a connection between rich lines in Cartesian product sets and amenability (or expanding families of graphs in the finite field case). As an application of our upper bounds for rich lines in grids, we give a geometric proof of the asymmetric sum-product estimates of Bourgain and Shkredov.

On Baire Measurable Colorings of Group Actions
Published in Ergod. Th. Dynam. Sys. 41 (2021) 818-845 • View Publication • BIB
The field of descriptive combinatorics investigates the question, to what extent can classical combinatorial results and techniques be made topologically or measure-theoretically well-behaved? This paper examines a class of coloring problems induced by actions of countable groups on Polish spaces, with the requirement that the desired coloring be Baire measurable. We show that the set of all such coloring problems that admit a Baire measurable solution for a particular free action $α$ is complete analytic (apart from the trivial situation when the orbit equivalence relation induced by $α$ is smooth on a comeager set); this result confirms the "hardness" of finding a topologically well-behaved coloring. When $α$ is the shift action, we characterize the class of problems for which $α$ has a Baire measurable coloring in purely combinatorial terms; it turns out that closely related concepts have already been studied in graph theory with no relation to descriptive set theory. We remark that our framework permits a wholly dynamical interpretation (with colorings corresponding to equivariant maps to a given subshift), so this article can also be viewed as a contribution to generic dynamics.

Infinite families of 2-designs from GA_1(q) actions
Group action is a standard approach to obtain $t$-designs. In this approach, selecting a specific permutation group with a certain degree of transitivity or homogeneity and a proper set of base blocks is important for obtaining $t$-$(v, k, λ)$ designs with computable parameters $t, v, k$, and $λ$. The general affine group $\GA_1(q)$ is $2$-transitive on $\gf(q)$, and has relatively a small size. In this paper, we determine the parameters of a number of infinite families of $2$-designs obtained from the action of the group $\GA_1(q)$ on certain base blocks, and demonstrate that some of the $2$-designs give rise to linear codes with optimal or best parameters known. Open problems are also presented.

Refined Cyclic Sieving on Words for the Major Index Statistic
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 73, October 2018, pages 37 to 60 • View Publication • BIB
Reiner-Stanton-White defined the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) associated to a finite cyclic group action and a polynomial. A key example arises from the length generating function for minimal length coset representatives of a parabolic quotient of a finite Coxeter group. In type A, this result can be phrased in terms of the natural cyclic action on words of fixed content. There is a natural notion of refinement for many CSP's. We formulate and prove a refinement, with respect to the major index statistic, of this CSP on words of fixed content by also fixing the cyclic descent type. The argument presented is completely different from Reiner-Stanton-White's representation-theoretic approach. It is combinatorial and largely, though not entirely, bijective in a sense we make precise with a "universal" sieving statistic on words, "flex". A building block of our argument involves cyclic sieving for shifted subset sums, which also appeared in Reiner-Stanton-White. We give an alternate, largely bijective proof of a refinement of this result by extending some ideas of Wagon-Wilf.

Fixed-point-free involutions and Schur P-positivity
Published in J. Combin. 11 (2020), no. 1, 65-110 • View Publication • BIB
The orbits of the symplectic group acting on the type A flag variety are indexed by the fixed-point-free involutions in a finite symmetric group. The cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits have polynomial representatives $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ akin to Schubert polynomials. We show that the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, which are stable limits of the polynomials $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, are Schur $P$-positive. To do so, we construct an analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree, an algebraic recurrence that computes Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct of our proof, we obtain a Pfaffian formula of geometric interest for $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ when $z$ is a fixed-point-free version of a Grassmannian permutation. We also classify the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions that are single Schur $P$-functions, and show that the decomposition of $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ into Schur $P$-functions is unitriangular with respect to dominance order on strict partitions. These results and proofs mirror previous work by the authors related to the orthogonal group action on the type A flag variety.
