Determinantal representations of alternating run polynomials
Based on a determinantal formula for the higher derivative of a quotient of two functions, we first present the determinantal expressions of Eulerian polynomials and Andre polynomials. In particular, we discover that the Euler number (number of alternating permutations) can be expressed as a lower Hessenberg determinant. We then investigate the determinantal representations of the up-down run polynomials and the types A and B alternating run polynomials. As applications, we deduce several new recurrence relations, which imply the multiplicity of -1 in these three kinds of polynomials. And then, we provide two determinantal representations for the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations. In particular, we discover a close connection between the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations and the type B Eulerian polynomials.

Normal ordered grammars
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the theory of normal ordered grammars, which gives a natural generalization of the normal ordering problem. To illustrate the main idea, we explore normal ordered grammars associated with the Eulerian polynomials and the second-order Eulerian polynomials. In particular, we present a normal ordered grammatical interpretation for the (cdes, cyc) (p,q)-Eulerian polynomials, where cdes and cyc are the cycle descent and cycle statistics, respectively. The exponential generating function for a family of polynomials, generated by a normal ordered grammar associated with the second-order Eulerian polynomials, reveals an interesting feature: its expression involves the generating function for Catalan numbers as its exponent. In the final part, we discuss some normal ordered grammars related to the type B Eulerian polynomials. A normal ordered grammatical interpretation of the up-down run polynomial is also established.

Enumeration of permutations by the parity of descent positions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Noticing that some recent variations of descent polynomials are special cases of Carlitz and Scoville's four-variable polynomials, which enumerate permutations by the parity of descent and ascent positions, we prove a $q$-analogue of Carlitz-Scoville's generating function by counting the inversion number and a type B analogue by enumerating the signed permutations with respect to the parity of desecnt and ascent positions. As a by-product of our formulas, we obtain a $q$-analogue of Chebikin's formula for alternating descent polynomials, an alternative proof of Sun's gamma-positivity of her bivariate Eulerian polynomials and a type B analogue, the latter refines Petersen's gamma-positivity of the type B Eulerian polynomials.

Gamma-positivity and partial gamma-positivity of descent-type polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study gamma-positivity of descent-type polynomials by introducing the change of context-free grammars method. We first present grammatical proofs of the gamma-positivity of the Eulerian polynomials, type B Eulerian polynomials, derangement polynomials, Narayana polynomials and type B Narayana polynomials. We then provide partial gamma-positive expansions for several multivariate polynomials associated to Stirling permutations, Legendre-Stirling permutations, Jacobi-Stirling permutations and type B derangements, and the recurrences for the partial gamma-coefficients of these expansions are also obtained. Moreover, we define variants of the Foata-Strehl group action which are used to give combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients of most of these partial gamma-positive expansions.

Eulerian polynomials and descent statistics
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 90: 86-144, 2017 • View Publication • BIB
We prove several identities expressing polynomials counting permutations by various descent statistics in terms of Eulerian polynomials, extending results of Stembridge, Petersen, and Brändén. Additionally, we find $q$-exponential generating functions for $q$-analogues of these descent statistic polynomials that also keep track of the inversion number or inverse major index. We also present identities relating several of these descent statistic polynomials to refinements of type B Eulerian polynomials and flag descent polynomials by the number of negative letters of a signed permutation. Our methods include permutation enumeration techniques involving noncommutative symmetric functions, Brändén's modified Foata-Strehl action, and a group action of Petersen on signed permutations. Notably, the modified Foata-Strehl action yields an analogous relation between Narayana polynomials and the joint distribution of the peak number and descent number over 231-avoiding permutations, which we also interpret in terms of binary trees and Dyck paths.
