Euler characteristics in the quantum $K$-theory of flag varieties
We prove that the sheaf Euler characteristic of the product of a Schubert class and an opposite Schubert class in the quantum $K$-theory ring of a (generalized) flag variety $G/P$ is equal to $q^d$, where $d$ is the smallest degree of a rational curve joining the two Schubert varieties. This implies that the sum of the structure constants of any product of Schubert classes is equal to 1. Along the way, we provide a description of the smallest degree $d$ in terms of its projections to flag varieties defined by maximal parabolic subgroups.

Schubert curves in the orthogonal Grassmannian
We develop a combinatorial rule to compute the real geometry of type B Schubert curves $S(λ_\bullet)$ in the orthogonal Grassmannian $\mathrm{OG}_n$, which are one-dimensional Schubert problems defined with respect to orthogonal flags osculating the rational normal curve. Our results are natural analogs of results previously known only in type A. First, using the type B Wronski map, we show that the real locus of the Schubert curve has a natural covering map to $\mathbb{RP}^1$, with monodromy operator $ω$ defined as the commutator of jeu de taquin rectification and promotion on skew shifted semistandard tableaux. We then introduce two different algorithms to compute $ω$ without rectifying the skew tableau. The first uses recently-developed shifted tableau crystal operators, while the second uses local switches much like jeu de taquin. The switching algorithm further computes the K-theory coefficient of the Schubert curve: its nonadjacent switches precisely enumerate Pechenik and Yong's shifted genomic tableaux. The connection to K-theory also gives rise to a partial understanding of the complex geometry of these curves.
Motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells, Hecke algebras, and applications to Casselman's problem
Published in Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 57 (2024), no. 1, 87-141 • View Publication • BIB
Motivic Chern classes are elements in the K-theory of an algebraic variety $X$, depending on an extra parameter $y$. They are determined by functoriality and a normalization property for smooth $X$. In this paper we calculate the motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells in the (equivariant) K-theory of flag manifolds $G/B$. We show that the motivic class of a Schubert cell is determined recursively by the Demazure-Lusztig operators in the Hecke algebra of the Weyl group of $G$, starting from the class of a point. The resulting classes are conjectured to satisfy a positivity property. We use the recursions to give a new proof that they are equivalent to certain K-theoretic stable envelopes recently defined by Okounkov and collaborators, thus recovering results of Fehér, Rimányi and Weber. The Hecke algebra action on the K-theory of the Langlands dual flag manifold matches the Hecke action on the Iwahori invariants of the principal series representation associated to an unramified character for a group over a nonarchimedean local field. This gives a correspondence identifying the duals of the motivic Chern classes to the standard basis in the Iwahori invariants, and the fixed point basis to Casselman's basis. We apply this correspondence to prove two conjectures of Bump, Nakasuji and Naruse concerning factorizations and holomorphy properties of the coefficients in the transition matrix between the standard and the Casselman's basis.

Universal graph Schubert varieties
We consider the loci of invertible linear maps $f : \mathbb{C}^n \to {(\mathbb{C}^n)}^*$ together with pairs of flags $(E_\bullet, F_\bullet)$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ such that the various restrictions $f : F_j \to E_i^*$ have specified ranks. Identifying an invertible linear map with its graph viewed as a point in a Grassmannian, we show that the closures of these loci have cohomology classes represented by the back-stable Schubert polynomials of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. As a special case, we recover the result of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer that Stanley symmetric functions represent the classes of graph Schubert varieties. We consider similar loci where $f$ is restricted to be symmetric or skew-symmetric. Their classes are now given by back-stable versions of the polynomials introduced by Wyser and Yong to represent classes of orbit closures for the orthogonal and symplectic groups acting on the type A flag variety. Using degeneracy locus formulas of Kazarian and of Anderson and Fulton, we obtain new Pfaffian formulas for these polynomials in the vexillary case. We also give a geometric interpretation of the involution Stanley symmetric functions of Hamaker, Marberg, and the author: they represent classes of involution graph Schubert varieties in isotropic Grassmannians.

Real-rootedness of variations of Eulerian polynomials
The binomial Eulerian polynomials, introduced by Postnikov, Reiner, and Williams, are $γ$-positive polynomials and can be interpreted as $h$-polynomials of certain flag simplicial polytopes. Recently, Athanasiadis studied analogs of these polynomials for colored permutations. In this paper, we generalize them to $\mathbf{s}$-inversion sequences and prove that these new polynomials have only real roots by the method of interlacing polynomials. Three applications of this result are presented. The first one is to prove the real-rootedness of binomial Eulerian polynomials, which confirms a conjecture of Ma, Ma, and Yeh. The second one is to prove that the symmetric decomposition of binomial Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations is real-rooted. Thirdly, our polynomials for certain $\mathbf{s}$-inversion sequences are shown to admit a similar geometric interpretation related to edgewise subdivisions of simplexes.

Cluster structures in Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we explain how the coordinate ring of each (open) Schubert variety in the Grassmannian can be identified with a cluster algebra, whose combinatorial structure is encoded using (target labelings of) Postnikov's plabic graphs. This result generalizes a theorem of Scott (Scott 2006) for the Grassmannian, and proves a folklore conjecture for Schubert varieties that has been believed by experts since (Scott 2006), though the statement was not formally written down until Müller-Speyer explicitly conjectured it (Müller-Speyer 2016). To prove this conjecture we use a result of Leclerc (Leclerc 2016), who used the module category of the preprojective algebra to prove that coordinate rings of many Richardson varieties in the complete flag variety can be identified with cluster algebras. Our proof also uses a construction of Karpman (Karpman 2016) to build plabic graphs associated to reduced expressions. We additionally generalize our result to the setting of skew Schubert varieties; the latter result uses generalized plabic graphs, i.e. plabic graphs whose boundary vertices need not be labeled in cyclic order.
Linear degenerations of flag varieties: partial flags, defining equations, and group actions
We continue, generalize and expand our study of linear degenerations of flag varieties from [G. Cerulli Irelli, X. Fang, E. Feigin, G. Fourier, M. Reineke, Math. Z. 287 (2017), no. 1-2, 615-654]. We realize partial flag varieties as quiver Grassmannians for equi-oriented type A quivers and construct linear degenerations by varying the corresponding quiver representation. We prove that there exists the deepest flat degeneration and the deepest flat irreducible degeneration: the former is the partial analogue of the mf-degenerate flag variety and the latter coincides with the partial PBW-degenerate flag variety. We compute the generating function of the number of orbits in the flat irreducible locus and study the natural family of line bundles on the degenerations from the flat irreducible locus. We also describe explicitly the reduced scheme structure on these degenerations and conjecture that similar results hold for the whole flat locus. Finally, we prove an analogue of the Borel-Weil theorem for the flat irreducible locus.

Triangle-degrees in graphs and tetrahedron coverings in 3-graphs
We investigate a covering problem in $3$-uniform hypergraphs ($3$-graphs): given a $3$-graph $F$, what is $c_1(n,F)$, the least integer $d$ such that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex $3$-graph with minimum vertex degree $δ_1(G)>d$ then every vertex of $G$ is contained in a copy of $F$ in $G$ ? We asymptotically determine $c_1(n,F)$ when $F$ is the generalised triangle $K_4^{(3)-}$, and we give close to optimal bounds in the case where $F$ is the tetrahedron $K_4^{(3)}$ (the complete $3$-graph on $4$ vertices). This latter problem turns out to be a special instance of the following problem for graphs: given an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $m> n^2/4$ edges, what is the largest $t$ such that some vertex in $G$ must be contained in $t$ triangles? We give upper bound constructions for this problem that we conjecture are asymptotically tight. We prove our conjecture for tripartite graphs, and use flag algebra computations to give some evidence of its truth in the general case.

Generalized Minors and Tensor Invariants
Berenstein, Fomin and Zelevinsky defined functions on double Bruhat cells which they called generalized minors. By relating certain double Bruhat cells to configuration spaces of flags, we give formulas for these generalized minors as tensor invariants. This allows us to verify certain weight identities. The weights of the tensor invariants can then be used to construct the quiver for the cluster structure on the configuration space of three flags. We also show a converse statement--that the weights of tensor invariants can by computed from the structure of the quiver. The weight identities are important because they are necessary for the existence of cluster structures on the moduli space of framed local systems.

A symplectic refinement of shifted Hecke insertion
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 173 (2020), 105216 • View Publication • BIB
Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong defined Hecke insertion to formulate a combinatorial rule for the expansion of the stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_π$ indexed by permutations in the basis of stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_λ$ indexed by partitions. Patrias and Pylyavskyy introduced a shifted analogue of Hecke insertion whose natural domain is the set of maximal chains in a weak order on orbit closures of the orthogonal group acting on the complete flag variety. We construct a generalization of shifted Hecke insertion for maximal chains in an analogous weak order on orbit closures of the symplectic group. As an application, we identify a combinatorial rule for the expansion of "orthogonal" and "symplectic" shifted analogues of $G_π$ in Ikeda and Naruse's basis of $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions.

Classification of uniform flag triangulations of the boundary of the full root polytope of type $A$
The full root polytope of type $A$ is the convex hull of all pairwise differences of the standard basis vectors which we represent by forward and backward arrows. We completely classify all flag triangulations of this polytope that are uniform in the sense that the edges may be described as a function of the relative order of the indices of the four basis vectors involved. These fifteen triangulations fall naturally into three classes: three in the lex class, three in the revlex class and nine in the Simion class. We also consider a refined face count where we distinguish between forward and backward arrows. We prove the refined face counts only depend on the class of the triangulations. The refined face generating functions are expressed in terms of the Catalan and Delannoy generating functions and the modified Bessel function of the first kind.

The $cd$-Index: A Survey
This is a survey of the $cd$-index of Eulerian partially ordered sets. The $cd$-index is an encoding of the numbers of chains, specified by ranks, in the poset. It is the most efficient such encoding, incorporating all the affine relations on the flag numbers of Eulerian posets. Eulerian posets include the face posets of regular CW spheres (in particular, of convex polytopes), intervals in the Bruhat order on Coxeter groups, and the lattices of regions of oriented matroids. The paper discusses inequalities on the $cd$-index, connections with other combinatorial parameters, computation, and algebraic approaches.

The adjoint braid arrangement as a combinatorial Lie algebra via the Steinmann relations
We study a certain discrete differentiation of piecewise-constant functions on the adjoint of the braid hyperplane arrangement, defined by taking finite-differences across hyperplanes. In terms of Aguiar-Mahajan's Lie theory of hyperplane arrangements, we show that this structure is equivalent to the action of Lie elements on faces. We use layered binary trees to encode flags of adjoint arrangement faces, allowing for the representation of certain Lie elements by antisymmetrized layered binary forests. This is dual to the well-known use of (delayered) binary trees to represent Lie elements of the braid arrangement. The discrete derivative then induces an action of layered binary forests on piecewise-constant functions, which we call the forest derivative. Our main result states that forest derivatives of functions factorize as external products of functions precisely if one restricts to functions which satisfy the Steinmann relations, which are certain four-term linear relations appearing in the foundations of axiomatic quantum field theory. We also show that the forest derivative satisfies the Lie properties of antisymmetry the Jacobi identity. It follows from these Lie properties, and also crucially factorization, that functions which satisfy the Steinmann relations form a left comodule of the Lie cooperad, with the coaction given by the forest derivative. Dually, this endows the adjoint braid arrangement modulo the Steinmann relations with the structure of a Lie algebra internal to the category of vector species. This work is a first step towards describing new connections between Hopf theory in species and quantum field theory.
The volume polynomial of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties and the Gelfand-Zetlin polytope
Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties are subvarieties of the flag variety $\mathrm{Flag}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ arising naturally in the intersection of geometry, representation theory, and combinatorics. Recent results of Abe-Horiguchi-Masuda-Murai-Sato and Abe-DeDieu-Galetto-Harada relate the volume polynomials of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties to the volume polynomial of the Gelfand-Zetlin polytope $\mathrm{GZ}(λ)$ for $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$. The main results of this manuscript use and generalize tools developed by Anderson-Tymoczko, Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin, and Postnikov, in order to derive an explicit formula for the volume polynomials of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties in terms of the volumes of certain faces of the Gelfand-Zetlin polytope, and also exhibit a manifestly positive, combinatorial formula for their coefficients with respect to the basis of monomials in the $α_i := λ_i-λ_{i+1}$. In addition, motivated by these considerations, we carefully analyze the special case of the permutohedral variety, which is also known as the toric variety associated to Weyl chambers. In this case, we obtain an explicit decomposition of the permutohedron (the moment map image of the permutohedral variety) into combinatorial $(n-1)$-cubes, and also give a geometric interpretation of this decomposition by expressing the cohomology class of the permutohedral variety in $\mathrm{Flag}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ as a sum of the cohomology classes of a certain set of Richardson varieties.

Enriched chain polytopes
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics 237 (2020), 485 - 500 • View Publication • BIB
Stanley introduced a lattice polytope $\mathcal{C}_P$ arising from a finite poset $P$, which is called the chain polytope of $P$. The geometric structure of $\mathcal{C}_P$ has good relations with the combinatorial structure of $P$. In particular, the Ehrhart polynomial of $\mathcal{C}_P$ is given by the order polynomial of $P$. In the present paper, associated to $P$, we introduce a lattice polytope $\mathcal{E}_{P}$, which is called the enriched chain polytope of $P$, and investigate geometric and combinatorial properties of this polytope. By virtue of the algebraic technique on Gröbner bases, we see that $\mathcal{E}_P$ is a reflexive polytope with a flag regular unimodular triangulation. Moreover, the $h^*$-polynomial of $\mathcal{E}_P$ is equal to the $h$-polynomial of a flag triangulation of a sphere. On the other hand, by showing that the Ehrhart polynomial of $\mathcal{E}_P$ coincides with the left enriched order polynomial of $P$, it follows from works of Stembridge and Petersen that the $h^*$-polynomial of $\mathcal{E}_P$ is $γ$-positive. Stronger, we prove that the $γ$-polynomial of $\mathcal{E}_P$ is equal to the $f$-polynomial of a flag simplicial complex.

Binomial Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations
Binomial Eulerian polynomials first appeared in work of Postnikov, Reiner and Williams on the face enumeration of generalized permutohedra. They are $γ$-positive (in particular, palindromic and unimodal) polynomials which can be interpreted as $h$-polynomials of certain flag simplicial polytopes and which admit interesting Schur $γ$-positive symmetric function generalizations. This paper introduces analogues of these polynomials for $r$-colored permutations with similar properties and uncovers some new instances of equivariant $γ$-positivity in geometric combinatorics.

A Lower Bound of the Number of Threshold Functions in Terms of Combinatorial Flags on the Boolean Cube
Let $ E=\{ (1, b_1, \ldots , b_n)\in R^{n+1} \mid \; b_i= \pm 1 ,\; i=1, \ldots, n \}$, $E^{\times n}_{\ne 0} := \{ W=(w_{i_1}, \ldots , w_{i_n}) \mid w_{i_k}\in E, \, k=1, \ldots, n, \, dim \, span(w_{i_1}, \ldots , w_{i_n}) = n \},$ and $q^W_l := |span(w_{i_{n-l+1}}, \ldots , w_{i_n}) \cap E|.$ Then for any weights $p=(p_1, \ldots, p_{2^n})$, $p_i\in R$, $\sum_{i=1}^{2^n}{p_i} =1$ we have for the number of threshold functions $P(2,n)$ the following lower bound $$P(2, n) \geq 2\sum_{W\in E^{\times n}_{\ne 0}}{\frac{1- p_{i_1} -p_{i_2} - \cdots - p_{i_{q_n^W}}}{q_n^W\cdot q_{n-1}^W\cdots q_1^W}},$$ and the right side of the inequality doesn't depend on the choice of $p$. Here the indices used in the numerator correspond to vectors from $span(w_{i_1}, \ldots , w_{i_n})\cap E = \left\{w_{i_1}, \ldots, w_{i_n}, \ldots w_{i_{q_n^W}}\right\}$.

Weyl-Mahonian Statistics for Weighted Flags of Type A-D
We relate properties of weighted flags (or multiflags) of type AD to statistics of the corresponding Weyl groups. For type A, we recover the Mahonian statistics on symmetric groups. Finally, we sketch briefly an easy extension incorporating statistics for so-called Euler-polynomials.
Combinatorics of cluster structures in Schubert varieties
We give an explicit combinatorial description of cluster structures in Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian in terms of (target labelings of) Postnikov's plabic graphs. This description is a natural generalization of the description given by (Scott 2006) for the Grassmannian and has been believed by experts essentially since (Scott 2006), though the statement was not formally written down until (Müller-Speyer 2016). To prove this conjecture we use a result of (Leclerc 2016), who used the module category of the preprojective algebra to prove that coordinate rings of many Richardson varieties in the complete flag variety admit cluster structures. We also adapt a construction of (Karpman 2016) to build cluster seeds associated to reduced expressions. Further, we explicitly describe cluster structures in skew Schubert varieties using plabic graphs whose boundary vertices need not be labeled in cyclic order.

Direct families of polytopes with nontrivial Massey products
The problem of existence of nontrivial Massey products in cohomology of a space is well-known in algebraic topology and homological algebra. A number of problems in complex geometry, symplectic geometry, and algebraic topology can be stated in terms of Massey products. One of such problems is to establish formality of smooth manifolds in rational homotopy theory. There have already been constructed a few classes of spaces with nontrivial triple Massey products in cohomology. Until now, very few examples of manifolds $M$ with nontrivial higher Massey products in $H^*(M)$ were known. In this work we introduce a sequence of smooth closed manifolds $\{M_{k}\}^{\infty}_{k=1}$ such that $M_{k}\hookrightarrow M_{k+1}$ is a submanifold and a retract of $M_{k+1}$ for any $k\geq 1$ and there exists a nontrivial Massey product $\langleα_{1},\ldots,α_{n}\rangle$ in $H^*(M_{k})$ for each $2\leq n\leq k$. The sequence $\{M_k\}^{\infty}_{k=1}$ is determined by a new family of flag nestohedra $\mathcal P_{Mas}$. We give P.D.E. for the two-parametric generating series of $\mathcal P_{Mas}$.
