Barycentric subdivisions and derangement polynomials for the even-signed permutation groups
The derangement polynomial for the symmetric group enumerates derangements by the number of excedances. It can be interpreted as the local $h$-polynomial, in the sense of Stanley, of the barycentric subdivision of the simplex. Motivated by this interpretation, we define a derangement polynomial for the even-signed permutation group. The coefficients of this polynomial are nonnegative, symmetric and unimodal. We show that they enumerate derangements in the even-signed permutation group according to a notion of excedance, which is analogous to the one introduced by Brenti for signed permutations. We also give an explicit formula for the corresponding exponential generating function.

In this paper, algorithms are developed for computing the Stirling transform and the inverse Stirling transform; specifically, we investigate a class of sequences satisfying a two-term recurrence. We derive a general identity which generalizes the usual Stirling transform and investigate the corresponding generating functions also. In addition, some interesting consequences of these results related to classical sequences like Fibonacci, Bernoulli and the numbers of derangements have been derived.

We confirm Sun's conjecture that $(\root{n+1}\of{F_{n+1}}/\root{n}\of{F_n})_{n\ge 4}$ is strictly decreasing to the limit 1, where $(F_n)_{n\ge0}$ is the Fibonacci sequence. We also prove that the sequence $(\root{n+1}\of{D_{n+1}}/\root{n}\of{D_n})_{n\ge3}$ is strictly decreasing with limit $1$, where $D_n$ is the $n$-th derangement number. For $m$-th order harmonic numbers $H_n^{(m)}=\sum_{k=1}^n 1/k^m\ (n=1,2,3,\ldots)$, we show that $(\root{n+1}\of{H^{(m)}_{n+1}}/\root{n}\of{H^{(m)}_n})_{n\ge3}$ is strictly increasing.

We give a new recurrence formula for the eigenvalues of the derangement graph. Consequently, we provide a simpler proof of the Alternating Sign Property of the derangement graph. Moreover, we prove that the absolute value of the eigenvalue decreases whenever the corresponding partition decreases in the dominance order. In particular, this settles affirmatively a conjecture of Ku and Wales (J. of Combin. Theory, Series A 117 (2010) 289--312) regarding the lower and upper bound for the absolute values of these eigenvalues.

We use the theory of lexicographic shellability to provide various examples in which the rank of the homology of a Rees product of two partially ordered sets enumerates some set of combinatorial objects, perhaps according to some natural statistic on the set. Many of these examples generalize a result of J. Jonsson, which says that the rank of the unique nontrivial homology group of the Rees product of a truncated Boolean algebra of degree $n$ and a chain of length $n-1$ is the number of derangements in $§_n$.\

We propose a new approach to the combinatorial interpretations of linearization coefficient problem of orthogonal polynomials. We first establish a difference system and then solve it combinatorially and analytically using the method of separation of variables. We illustrate our approach by applying it to determine the number of perfect matchings, derangements, and other weighted permutation problems. The separation of variables technique naturally leads to integral representations of combinatorial numbers where the integrand contains a product of one or more types of orthogonal polynomials. This also establishes the positivity of such integrals.

Let $A_n$ be the alternating group of even permutations of $X:=\{1,2,...,n\}$ and ${\mathcal E}_n$ the set of even derangements on $X.$ Denote by $A\T_n^q$ the tensor product of $q$ copies of $A\T_n,$ where the Cayley graph $A\T_n:=\T(A_n,{\mathcal E}_n)$ is called the even derangement graph. In this paper, we intensively investigate the properties of $A\T_n^q$ including connectedness, diameter, independence number, clique number, chromatic number and the maximum-size independent sets of $A\T_n^q.$ By using the result on the maximum-size independent sets $A\T_n^q$, we completely determine the full automorphism groups of $A\T_n^q.$

A permutation sigma in Sn is a k-derangement if for any subset X = {a1, . . ., ak} \subseteq [n], {sigma(a1), . . ., sigma(ak)} is not equal to X. One can form the k-derangement graph on the set of permutations of Sn by connecting two permutations sigma and tau if sigma(tau)^-1 is a k-derangement. We characterize when such a graph is connected or Eulerian. For n an odd prime power, we determine the independence, clique and chromatic number of the 2-derangement graph.

We use both Abel's lemma on summation by parts and Zeilberger's algorithm to find recurrence relations for definite summations. The role of Abel's lemma can be extended to the case of linear difference operators with polynomial coefficients. This approach can be used to verify and discover identities involving harmonic numbers and derangement numbers. As examples, we use the Abel-Zeilberger algorithm to prove the Paule-Schneider identities, the Apery-Schmidt-Strehl identity, Calkin's identity and some identities involving Fibonacci numbers.
Derangement Frequency in the Boolean Complex
In previous work, we associated to any finite simple graph a particular set of derangements of its vertices. These derangements are in bijection with the spheres in the wedge sum describing the homotopy type of the boolean complex for this graph. Here we study the frequency with which a given derangement appears in this set.

We study the functions that count matrices of given rank over a finite field with specified positions equal to zero. We show that these matrices are $q$-analogues of permutations with certain restricted values. We obtain a simple closed formula for the number of invertible matrices with zero diagonal, a $q$-analogue of derangements, and a curious relationship between invertible skew-symmetric matrices and invertible symmetric matrices with zero diagonal. In addition, we provide recursions to enumerate matrices and symmetric matrices with zero diagonal by rank, and we frame some of our results in the context of Lie theory. Finally, we provide a brief exposition of polynomiality results for enumeration questions related to those mentioned, and give several open questions.

We determine how the flag f-vector of any graded poset changes under the Rees product with the chain, and more generally, any t-ary tree. As a corollary, the Möbius function of the Rees product of any graded poset with the chain, and more generally, the t-ary tree, is exactly the same as the Rees product of its dual with the chain, respectively, t-ary chain. We then study enumerative and homological properties of the Rees product of the cubical lattice with the chain. We give a bijective proof that the Möbius function of this poset can be expressed as n times a signed derangement number. From this we derive a new bijective proof of Jonsson's result that the Möbius function of the Rees product of the Boolean algebra with the chain is given by a derangement number. Using poset homology techniques we find an explicit basis for the reduced homology and determine a representation for the reduced homology of the order complex of the Rees product of the cubical lattice with the chain over the symmetric group.

Recently, Deutsch and Elizalde studied the largest and the smallest fixed points of permutations. Motivated by their work, we consider the analogous problems in weighted set partitions. Let $A_{n,k}(\mathbf{t})$ denote the total weight of partitions on $[n+1]$ with the largest singleton $\{k+1\}$. In this paper, explicit formulas for $A_{n,k}(\mathbf{t})$ and many combinatorial identities involving $A_{n,k}(\mathbf{t})$ are obtained by umbral operators and combinatorial methods. As applications, we investigate three special cases such as permutations, involutions and labeled forests. Particularly in the permutation case, we derive a surprising identity analogous to the Riordan identity related to tree enumerations, namely, \begin{eqnarray*} \sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}D_{k+1}(n+1)^{n-k} &=& n^{n+1}, \end{eqnarray*} where $D_{k}$ is the $k$-th derangement number or the number of permutations of $\{1,2,\dots, k\}$ with no fixed points.
The symmetric and unimodal expansion of Eulerian polynomials via continued fractions

This paper was motivated by a conjecture of Brändén (European J. Combin. \textbf{29} (2008), no.~2, 514--531) about the divisibility of the coefficients in an expansion of generalized Eulerian polynomials, which implies the symmetric and unimodal property of the Eulerian numbers. We show that such a formula with the conjectured property can be derived from the combinatorial theory of continued fractions. We also discuss an analogous expansion for the corresponding formula for derangements and prove a $(p,q)$-analogue of the fact that the (-1)-evaluation of the enumerator polynomials of permutations (resp. derangements) by the number of excedances gives rise to tangent numbers (resp. secant numbers). The $(p,q)$-analogue unifies and generalizes our recent results (European J. Combin. \textbf{31} (2010), no.~7, 1689--1705.) and that of Josuat-Vergès (European J. Combin. \textbf{31} (2010), no.~7, 1892--1906).
Homology of the Boolean Complex

We construct and analyze an explicit basis for the homology of the boolean complex of a Coxeter system. This gives combinatorial meaning to the spheres in the wedge sum describing the homotopy type of the complex. We assign a set of derangements to any finite simple graph. For each derangement, we construct a corresponding element in the homology of the complex, and the collection of these elements forms a basis for the homology of the boolean complex. In this manner, the spheres in the wedge sum describing the homotopy type of the complex can be represented by a set of derangements. We give an explicit, closed-form description of the derangements that can be obtained from any graph, and compute this set for several families of graphs. In the cases of complete graphs and Ferrers graphs, these calculations give bijective proofs of previously obtained enumerative results.

A classic problem in enumerative combinatorics is to count the number of derangements, that is, permutations with no fixed point. Inspired by a recent generalization to facet derangements of the hypercube by Gordon and McMahon, we generalize this problem to enumerating derangements in the wreath product of any finite cyclic group with the symmetric group. We also give q- and (q, t)-analogs for cyclic derangements, generalizing results of Brenti and Gessel.
The (1-E)-transform in combinatorial Hopf algebras

We extend to several combinatorial Hopf algebras the endomorphism of symmetric functions sending the first power-sum to zero and leaving the other ones invariant. As a transformation of alphabets, this is the (1-E)-transform, where E is the exponential alphabet, whose elementary symmetric functions are e_n=1/n!. In the case of noncommutative symmetric functions, we recover Schocker's idempotents for derangement numbers [Discr. Math. 269 (2003), 239].
From these idempotents, we construct subalgebras of the descent algebras analogous to the peak algebras and study their representation theory. The case of WQSym leads to similar subalgebras of the Solomon-Tits algebras. In FQSym, the study of the transformation boils down to a simple solution of the Tsetlin library in the uniform case.
