A Short Combinatorial Proof of Derangement Identity
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $n$-th rencontres number with the parameter $r$ is the number of permutations having exactly $r$ fixed points. In particular, a derangement is a permutation without any fixed point. We presents a short combinatorial proof for a weighted sum derangement identities.

Refinements of the Bell and Stirling numbers
We introduce new refinements of the Bell, factorial, and unsigned Stirling numbers of the first and second kind that unite the derangement, involution, associated factorial, associated Bell, incomplete Stirling, restricted factorial, restricted Bell, and $r$-derangement numbers (and probably more!). By combining methods from analytic combinatorics, umbral calculus, and probability theory, we derive several recurrence relations and closed form expressions for these numbers. By specializing our results to the classical case, we recover explicit formulae for the Bell and Stirling numbers as sums over compositions.

Zeons, Permanents, the Johnson scheme, and Generalized Derangements
Published in International Journal of Combinatorics, (2011), v.2011, Article ID 539030, 29 pages • View Publication • BIB
Starting with the zero-square "zeon algebra" the connection with permanents is shown. Permanents of sub-matrices of a linear combination of the identity matrix and all-ones matrix leads to moment polynomials with respect to the exponential distribution. A permanent trace formula analogous to MacMahon's Master Theorem is presented and applied. Connections with permutation groups acting on sets and the Johnson association scheme arise. The families of numbers appearing as matrix entries turn out to be related to interesting variations on derangements. These generalized derangements are considered in detail as an illustration of the theory.

Erdos-Ko-Rado theorem for the group $\textrm{PSU}(3,q)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we consider the derangement graph for the group $\textrm{PSU}(3,q)$ where $q$ is a prime power. We calculate all eigenvalues for this derangement graph and use these eigenvalues to prove that $\textrm{PSU}(3,q)$ has the Erdős-Ko-Rado property and, provided that $q\neq 2, 5$, another property that we call the {\textsl Erdős-Ko-Rado module property}.
Signed Countings of types B and D permutations and $t,q$-Euler Numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is a classical result that the parity-balance of the number of weak excedances of all permutations (derangements, respectively) of length $n$ is the Euler number $E_n$, alternating in sign, if $n$ is odd (even, respectively). Josuat-Vergès obtained a $q$-analog of the results respecting the number of crossings of a permutation. One of the goals in this paper is to extend the results to the permutations (derangements, respectively) of types B and D, on the basis of the joint distribution in statistics excedances, crossings and the number of negative entries obtained by Corteel, Josuat-Vergès and Kim. Springer numbers are analogous Euler numbers that count the alternating permutations of type B, called snakes. Josuat-Vergès derived bivariate polynomials $Q_n(t,q)$ and $R_n(t,q)$ as generalized Euler numbers via successive $q$-derivatives and multiplications by $t$ on polynomials in $t$. The other goal in this paper is to give a combinatorial interpretation of $Q_n(t,q)$ and $R_n(t,q)$ as the enumerators of the snakes with restrictions.
Local $h$-vectors of Quasi-Geometric and Barycentric Subdivisions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we answer two questions on local $h$-vectors, which were asked by Athanasiadis. First, we characterize all possible local $h$-vectors of quasi-geometric subdivisions of a simplex. Second, we prove that the local $γ$-vector of the barycentric subdivision of any CW-regular subdivision of a simplex is nonnegative. Along the way, we derive a new recurrence formula for the derangement polynomials.

On the Number of Conjugate Classes of Derangements
Published in Journal of Mathematics, Volume 2021, Article ID 6023081, 20 pages • View Publication • BIB
The number of conjugate classes of derangements of order $n$ is the same as the number $h(n)$ of the restricted partitions with every portion greater than $1$. It is also equal to the number of isotopy classes of $2\times n$ Latin rectangles. Sometimes the exact value is necessary, while sometimes we need the approximation value. In this paper, a recursion formula of $h(n)$ will be obtained, also will some elementary approximation formulae with high accuracy for $h(n)$ be presented. Although we may obtain the value of $h(n)$ in some computer algebra system, it is still meaningful to find an efficient way to calculate the approximate value, especially in engineering, since most people are familiar with neither programming nor CAS software. This paper is mainly for the readers who need a simple and practical formula to obtain the approximate value (without writing a program) with more accuracy, such as to compute the value in an pocket science calculator without programming function. Some methods used here can also be applied to find the fitting functions for some types of data obtained in experiments.
Stirling permutations, marked permutations and Stirling derangements
In this paper we introduce the definition of marked permutations. We first present a bijection between Stirling permutations and marked permutations. We then present an involution on Stirling derangements. Furthermore, we present a symmetric bivariate enumerative polynomials on $r$-colored marked permutations. Finally, we give an explanation of $r$-colored marked permutations by using the language of combinatorial objects.

The distance spectra of the derangement graphs
In this paper, we consider the distance spectra of the derangement graphs. First we give a constructive proof that the connected derangement graphs are of diameter 2. Then we obtain their distance spectra. In particular, we determine all their extremal distance eigenvalues.

Generalized K-Shift Forbidden Substrings in Permutations
In this note we continue the analysis of permutations that avoid substrings j(j+k), 1 <= j <= n-k, k < n, as well as substrings j(j+k) (mod n), 1 <= j <= n. In the first case the number of such permutations can be obtained from recursions starting from derangement numbers, while in the (mod n) case the number of permutations depends on whether n is prime, and more generally, on whether n and k are relatively prime.

Forbidden Patterns and the Alternating Derangement Sequence
In this note we count linear arrangements that avoid certain patterns and show their connection to the derangement numbers. We discuss the sequence Dn, which counts linear arrangements that avoid patterns 12, 23, ..., (n-1)n, n1, and show that this sequence almost follows the derangement sequence itself since the number of its odd terms is one more than the derangement numbers while the number of its even terms is one less. We also express the derangement numbers in terms of these and other arrangements.

In this paper, we present grammatical descriptions of several polynomials associated with Eulerian polynomials, including q-Eulerian polynomials, alternating run polynomials and derangement polynomials. As applications, we get several convolution formulas involving these polynomials.

Pattern-Avoiding Polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Two well-known polytopes whose vertices are indexed by permutations in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ are the permutohedron $P_n$ and the Birkhoff polytope $B_n$. We consider polytopes $P_n(Π)$ and $B_n(Π)$, whose vertices correspond to the permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ avoiding a set of patterns $Π$. For various choices of $Π$, we explore the Ehrhart polynomials and $h^*$-vectors of these polytopes as well as other aspects of their combinatorial structure. For $P_n(Π)$, we consider all subsets $Π\subseteq \mathfrak{S}_3$ and are able to provide results in most cases. To illustrate, $P_n(123,132)$ is a Pitman-Stanley polytope, the number of interior lattice points in $P_n(132,312)$ is a derangement number, and the normalized volume of $P_n(123,231,312)$ is the number of trees on $n$ vertices. The polytopes $B_n(Π)$ seem much more difficult to analyze, so we focus on four particular choices of $Π$. First we show that the $B_n(231,321)$ is exactly the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope. Next we prove that for any $Π$ containing $\{123,312\}$ we have $h^*(B_n(Π))=1$. Finally, we study $B_n(132,312)$ and $\widetilde{B}_n(123)$, where the tilde indicates that we choose vertices corresponding to alternating permutations avoiding the pattern $123$. In both cases we use order complexes of posets and techniques from toric algebra to construct regular, unimodular triangulations of the polytopes. The posets involved turn out to be isomorphic to the lattices of Young diagrams contained in a certain shape, and this permits us to give an exact expression for the normalized volumes of the corresponding polytopes via the hook formula. Finally, Stanley's theory of $(P,ω)$-partitions allows us to show that their $h^*$-vectors are symmetric and unimodal. Various questions and conjectures are presented throughout.

Local limit of the fixed point forest
Published in Electron. J. Probab. 22 (2017), no. 18, 1-26 • View Publication • BIB
Consider the following partial "sorting algorithm" on permutations: take the first entry of the permutation in one-line notation and insert it into the position of its own value. Continue until the first entry is 1. This process imposes a forest structure on the set of all permutations of size $n$, where the roots are the permutations starting with 1 and the leaves are derangements. Viewing the process in the opposite direction towards the leaves, one picks a fixed point and moves it to the beginning. Despite its simplicity, this "fixed point forest" exhibits a rich structure. In this paper, we consider the fixed point forest in the limit $n\to \infty$ and show using Stein's method that at a random permutation the local structure weakly converges to a tree defined in terms of independent Poisson point processes. We also show that the distribution of the length of the longest path to a leaf converges to the geometric distribution with mean $e-1$, and the length of the shortest path converges to the Poisson distribution with mean 1. In addition, the higher moments are bounded and hence the expectations converge as well.

On a conjecture of Stein
Published • View Publication • BIB
Stein proposed the following conjecture: if the edge set of $K_{n,n}$ is partitioned into $n$ sets, each of size $n$, then there is a partial rainbow matching of size $n-1$. He proved that there is a partial rainbow matching of size $n(1-\frac{D_n}{n!})$, where $D_n$ is the number of derangements of $[n]$. This means that there is a partial rainbow matching of size about $(1- \frac{1}{e})n$. Using a topological version of Hall's theorem we improve this bound to $\frac{2}{3}n$.

Permutation groups and derangements of odd prime order
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a transitive permutation group of degree $n$. We say that $G$ is $2'$-elusive if $n$ is divisible by an odd prime, but $G$ does not contain a derangement of odd prime order. In this paper we study the structure of quasiprimitive and biquasiprimitive $2'$-elusive permutation groups, extending earlier work of Giudici and Xu on elusive groups. As an application, we use our results to investigate automorphisms of finite arc-transitive graphs of prime valency.
Consistency and Derangements in Brane Tilings
Published in Journal of Physics A 49 (2016) 355401 • View Publication • BIB
Brane tilings describe Lagrangians (vector multiplets, chiral multiplets, and the superpotential) of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories. These theories, written in terms of a bipartite graph on a torus, correspond to worldvolume theories on $N$ D$3$-branes probing a toric Calabi-Yau threefold singularity. A pair of permutations compactly encapsulates the data necessary to specify a brane tiling. We show that geometric consistency for brane tilings, which ensures that the corresponding quantum field theories are well behaved, imposes constraints on the pair of permutations, restricting certain products constructed from the pair to have no one-cycles. Permutations without one-cycles are known as derangements. We illustrate this formulation of consistency with known brane tilings. Counting formulas for consistent brane tilings with an arbitrary number of chiral bifundamental fields are written down in terms of delta functions over symmetric groups.

Computing derangement probabilities of the symmetric group acting on k-sets
Let $i(\infty,k)$ be the limiting proportion, as $n \rightarrow \infty$, of permutations in the symmetric group of degree $n$ that fix a $k$-set. We give an algorithm for computing $i(\infty,k)$ and state the values of $i(\infty,k)$ for $k \le 30$. These values are consistent with a conjecture of Peter Cameron that $i(\infty,k)$ is a decreasing function of $k$.

Arithmetic Properties of the Sequence of Derangements and its Generalizations
Published • View Publication • BIB
The sequence of derangements is given by the formula $D_0 = 1, D_n = nD_{n-1} + (-1)^n, n>0$. It is a classical object appearing in combinatorics and number theory. In this paper we consider two classes of sequences: first class is given by the formulae $a_0 = h_1(0), a_n = f(n)a_{n-1} + h_1(n)h_2(n)^n, n>0$, where $f,h_1,h_2 \in\mathbb{Z}[X]$, and the second one is defined by $a_n = \sum_{j=0}^n \frac{n!}{j!} h(n)^j, n\in\mathbb{N}$, where $h\in\mathbb{Z}[X]$. Both classes are a generalization of the sequence of derangements. We study such arithmetic properties of these sequences as: periodicity modulo $d$, where $d\in\mathbb{N}_+$, $p$-adic valuations, asymptotics, boundedness, periodicity, recurrence relations and prime divisors. Particularly we focus on the properties of the sequence of derangements and use them to establish arithmetic properties of the sequences of even and odd derangements.
