We link distinct concepts of geometric group theory and homotopy theory through underlying combinatorics. For a flag simplicial complex $K$, we specify a necessary and sufficient combinatorial condition for the commutator subgroup $RC_K'$ of a right-angled Coxeter group, viewed as the fundamental group of the real moment-angle complex $\mathcal{R}_K$, to be a one-relator group; and for the Pontryagin algebra $H_*(Ω\mathcal{Z}_K)$ of the moment-angle complex to be a one-relator algebra. We also give a homological characterisation of these properties. For $RC_K'$, it is given by a condition on the homology group $H_2(\mathcal{R}_K)$, whereas for $H_*(Ω\mathcal{Z}_K)$ it is stated in terms of the bigrading of the homology groups of $\mathcal{Z}_K$.
Interval structures in the Bruhat and weak orders

We study the appearance of notable interval structures -- lattices, modular lattices, distributive lattices, and boolean lattices -- in both the Bruhat and weak orders of Coxeter groups. We collect and expand upon known results for principal order ideals, including pattern characterizations and enumerations for the symmetric group. This segues naturally into a similar analysis for arbitrary intervals, although the results are less characterizing for the Bruhat order at this generality. In counterpoint, however, we obtain a full characterization for intervals starting at rank one in the symmetric group, for each of the four structure types, in each of the two posets. Each category can be enumerated, with intriguing connections to Fibonacci and Catalan numbers. We conclude with suggestions for further directions and questions, including an interesting analysis of the intervals formed between a permutation and each generator in its support.

Toric heaps, cyclic reducibility, and conjugacy in Coxeter groups

As a visualization of Cartier and Foata's "partially commutative monoid" theory, G.X. Viennot introduced "heaps of pieces" in 1986. These are essentially labeled posets satisfying a few additional properties. They naturally arise as models of reduced words in Coxeter groups. In this paper, we introduce a cyclic version, motivated by the idea of taking a heap and wrapping it into a cylinder. We call this object a "toric heap", as we formalize it as a labeled toric poset, which is a cyclic version of an ordinary poset. To define the concept of a toric extension, we develop a morphism in the category of toric heaps. We study toric heaps in Coxeter theory, in view of the fact that a cyclic shift of a reduced word is simply a conjugate by an initial or terminal generator. This allows us to formalize and study a framework of "cyclic reducibility" in Coxeter theory, and apply it to model conjugacy. We introduce the notion of "torically reduced", which is stronger than being cyclically reduced for group elements. This gives rise to a new class of elements called "torically fully commutative" (TFC), which are those that have a unique cyclic commutativity class, and comprise a strictly bigger class than the "cyclically fully commutative" (CFC) elements. We prove several cyclic analogues of results on fully commutative (FC) elements due to Stembridge. We conclude with how this framework fits into recent work in Coxeter groups, and we correct a minor flaw in a few recently published theorems.
Growth rates of Coxeter groups and Perron numbers

We define a large class of abstract Coxeter groups, that we call $\infty$--spanned, and for which the word growth rate and the geodesic growth rate appear to be Perron numbers. This class contains a fair amount of Coxeter groups acting on hyperbolic spaces, thus corroborating a conjecture by Kellerhals and Perren. We also show that for this class the geodesic growth rate strictly dominates the word growth rate.
A generalization of combinatorial identities for stable discrete series constants

This article is concerned with the constants that appear in Harish-Chandra's character formula for stable discrete series of real reductive groups, although it does not require any knowledge about real reductive groups or discrete series. In Harish-Chandra's work the only information we have about these constants is that they are uniquely determined by an inductive property. Later Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson and Herb gave different formulas for these constants. In this article we generalize these formulas to the case of arbitrary finite Coxeter groups (in this setting, discrete series no longer make sense), and give a direct proof that the two formulas agree. We actually prove a slightly more general identity that also implies the combinatorial identity underlying the discrete series character identities of Morel. We deduce this identity from a general abstract theorem giving a way to calculate the alternating sum of the values of a valuation on the chambers of a Coxeter arrangement. We also introduce a ring structure on the set of valuations on polyhedral cones in Euclidean space with values in a fixed ring. This gives a theoretical framework for the valuation appearing in Appendix A of the Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson paper. In Appendix B we extend the notion of $2$-structures (due to Herb) to pseudo-root systems.
On the central limit theorem for the two-sided descent statistics in Coxeter groups
In 2018, Kahle and Stump raised the following problem: identify sequences of finite Coxeter groups $W_n$ for which the two-sided descent statistics on a uniform random element of $W_n$ is asymptotically normal. Recently, Brück and Röttger provided an almost-complete answer, assuming some regularity condition on the sequence $W_n$. In this note, we provide a shorter proof of their result, which does not require any regularity condition. The main new proof ingredient is the use of the second Wasserstein distance on probability distributions, based on the work of Mallows (1972).

We study cells with respect to the $p$-canonical basis of the Hecke algebra of a crystallographic Coxeter system (see arXiv:1510.01556, arXiv:1901.02323) and their compatibility with standard parabolic subgroups. We show that after induction to the surrounding bigger Coxeter group the cell module of a right $p$-cell in a standard parabolic subgroup decomposes as a direct sum of cell modules. Along the way, we state some new positivity properties of the $p$-canonical basis.
Geometric realizations of regular abstract polyhedra with automorphism group $H_3$

A \textit{geometric realization} of an abstract polyhedron $\mathcal{P}$ is a mapping $ρ: \mathcal{P} \to \mathbb{E}^3$ that sends an $i$-face to an open set of dimension $i$. This work adapts a method based on Wythoff construction to generate a full rank realization of a regular abstract polyhedron from its automorphism group $Γ$. The method entails finding a real orthogonal representation of $Γ$ of degree 3 and applying its image to suitably chosen open sets in space. To demonstrate the use of the method, we apply it to the abstract polyhedra whose automorphism groups are isomorphic to the non-crystallographic Coxeter group $H_3$.
A characterization of simplicial oriented geometries as groupoids with root systems
This paper shows that simplicial oriented geometries can be characterized as groupoids with root systems having certain favorable properties, as conjectured by the first author. The proof first translates Handa's characterization of oriented matroids, as acycloids which remain acycloids under iterated elementary contractions, into the language of groupoids with root systems, then establishes favorable lattice theoretic properties of a generalization of a construction which Brink and Howlett used in their study of normalizers of parabolic subgroups of Coxeter groups and uses Björner-Edelman-Ziegler's lattice theoretic characterization of simplicial oriented geometries amongst oriented geometries.
On the joint distribution of descents and signs of permutations

We study the joint distribution of descents and sign for elements of the symmetric group and the hyperoctahedral group (Coxeter groups of types $A$ and $B$). For both groups, this has an application to riffle shuffling: for large decks of cards the sign is close to random after a single shuffle. In both groups, we derive generating functions for the Eulerian distribution refined according to sign, and use them to give two proofs of central limit theorems for positive and negative Eulerian numbers.
The facial weak order on hyperplane arrangements

We extend the facial weak order from finite Coxeter groups to central hyperplane arrangements. The facial weak order extends the poset of regions of a hyperplane arrangement to all its faces. We provide four non-trivially equivalent definitions of the facial weak order of a central arrangement: (1) by exploiting the fact that the faces are intervals in the poset of regions, (2) by describing its cover relations, (3) using covectors of the corresponding oriented matroid, and (4) using certain sets of normal vectors closely related to the geometry of the corresponding zonotope. Using these equivalent descriptions, we show that when the poset of regions is a lattice, the facial weak order is a lattice. In the case of simplicial arrangements, we further show that this lattice is semidistributive and give a description of its join-irreducible elements. Finally, we determine the homotopy type of all intervals in the facial weak order.
Lucas atoms

Given two variables $s$ and $t$, the associated sequence of Lucas polynomials is defined inductively by $\{0\}=0$, $\{1\}=1$, and $\{n\}=s\{n-1\}+t\{n-2\}$ for $n\ge2$. An integer (e.g., a Catalan number) defined by an expression of the form $\prod_i n_i/\prod_j k_j$ has a Lucas analogue obtained by replacing each factor with the corresponding Lucas polynomial. There has been interest in deciding when such expressions, which are a priori only rational functions, are actually polynomials in $s,t$. The approaches so far have been combinatorial. We introduce a powerful algebraic method for answering this question by factoring $\{n\}=\prod_{d|n} P_d(s,t)$, where we call the polynomials $P_d(s,t)$ Lucas atoms. This permits us to show that the Lucas analogues of the Fuss-Catalan and Fuss-Narayana numbers for all irreducible Coxeter groups are polynomials in $s,t$. Using gamma expansions, a technique which has recently become popular in combinatorics and geometry, one can show that the Lucas atoms have a close relationship with cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_d(q)$. Certain results about the $Φ_d(q)$ can then be lifted to Lucas atoms. In particular, one can prove analogues of theorems of Gauss and Lucas, deduce reduction formulas, and evaluate the $P_d(s,t)$ at various specific values of the variables.
Torus orbit closures in flag varieties and retractions on Weyl groups

A finite Coxeter group $W$ has a natural metric $d$ and if $\mathcal{M}$ is a subset of $W$, then for each $u\in W$, there is $q\in \mathcal{M}$ such that $d(u,q)=d(u,\mathcal{M})$. Such $q$ is not unique in general but if $\mathcal{M}$ is a Coxeter matroid, then it is unique, and we define a retraction $\mathcal{R}^m_{\mathcal{M}}\colon W\to \mathcal{M}\subset W$ so that $\mathcal{R}^m_{\mathcal{M}}(u)=q$.
The $T$-fixed point set $Y^T$ of a $T$-orbit closure $Y$ in a flag variety $G/B$ is a Coxeter matroid, where $G$ is a semisimple algebraic group, $B$ is a Borel subgroup, and $T$ is a maximal torus of $G$ contained in $B$. We define a retraction $\mathcal{R}^g_{Y}\colon W\to Y^T\subset W$ geometrically, where $W$ is the Weyl group of $G$, and show that $\mathcal{R}^g_{Y}=\mathcal{R}^m_{Y^T}$. We introduce another retraction $\mathcal{R}^a_{\mathcal{M}}\colon W\to \mathcal{M}\subset W$ algebraically for an arbitrary subset $\mathcal{M}$ of $W$ when $W$ is a Weyl group of classical Lie type, and show that $\mathcal{R}^a_{\mathcal{M}}=\mathcal{R}^m_{\mathcal{M}}$ when $\mathcal{M}$ is a Coxeter matroid.

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the statistic (des+ides) which assigns to an element w of a finite Coxeter group W the number of descents of w plus the number of descents of its inverse. Our main result is a central limit theorem for the probability distributions associated to this statistic. This answers a question of Kahle-Stump and generalises work of Chatterjee-Diaconis, Özdemir and Röttger.

We prove the $K(π,1)$ conjecture for affine Artin groups: the complexified complement of an affine reflection arrangement is a classifying space. This is a long-standing problem, due to Arnol'd, Pham, and Thom. Our proof is based on recent advancements in the theory of dual Coxeter and Artin groups, as well as on several new results and constructions. In particular: we show that all affine noncrossing partition posets are EL-shellable; we use these posets to construct finite classifying spaces for dual affine Artin groups; we introduce new CW models for the orbit configuration spaces associated with arbitrary Coxeter groups; we construct finite classifying spaces for the braided crystallographic groups introduced by McCammond and Sulway.
Construction of double coset system of a Coxeter group and its applications to Bruhat graphs
We develop combinatorics of parabolic double cosets in finite Coxeter groups as a follow-up of recent articles by Billey-Konvalinka-Petersen-Slofstra-Tenner and Petersen. (1) We construct a double coset system as a generalization of a two-sided analogue of a Coxeter complex and present its order structure with its local dimension function on certain connected components. As applications of double cosets to Bruhat graphs, we also prove: (2) every parabolic double coset is regular, (3) invariance of degree on Bruhat graph on lower intervals as an analogy of the one for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, (4) every noncritical Bruhat interval satisfies out-Eulerian property.
Weighted counting of Bruhat paths by shifted $R$-polynomials
We revisit $R$-polynomials with introducing the new idea ``shifted $R$-polynomials" (or Bruhat weight) for all Bruhat intervals in finite Coxeter groups. Then, we apply these polynomials to weighted counting of Bruhat paths. Further, we prove a new criterion of irregularity of lower intervals as analogy of Carrell-Peterson's and Dyer's results. Also, we present the upper bound of shifted $R$-polynomials for Bruhat intervals of fixed length by Jacobsthal numbers.
Weak Modularity and $\widetilde{A}_n$ Buildings
The $\widetilde{A}_n$ Coxeter groups are known to not be systolic or cocompactly cubulated for $n\geq 3$. We prove that these groups act geometrically on weakly modular graphs, a weak notion of nonpositive curvature generalizing the 1-skeleta of $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ cube complexes and systolic complexes. To prove weak modularity we describe the canonical emeddings of the 1-skeleta of $\widetilde{A}_n$ Coxeter complexes into the Euclidean spaces $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We also prove weak modularity for buildings of type $\widetilde{A}_3$.
Asymptotic Semigroups and Two-sided Weak Orders
Various partial orders related to the structures of dual canonical monoids are investigated. It is shown that the nilpotent variety of a dual canonical monoid is equidimensional; its dimension is found. It is shown in type A that certain intervals of the Putcha poset of a dual canonical monoid are isomorphic to the Renner monoids of matrices. The notion of a two-sided weak order on a normal reductive monoid is introduced. A criterion, in terms of type maps, for the covering relations in a two-sided weak order to have degree 2 is found. It is shown that, for the unique equivariant divisor of a dual canonical monoid (the asymptotic semigroup), the covering relations of the two-sided weak order are always of degree 1. These computations provide new insights for the two-sided weak orders on Coxeter groups. In type A, some enumerative results for the covering relations are presented.
